SALLIE RENE PHILLIPS SHARP

Sallie Rene Phillips Sharp, age 96, a resident of Coventry House, Siler City, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation Center.

A native of Chatham County, Mrs. Sharp was born November 30, 1913 to the late Riley and Ennis Phillips. She spent her adult life in Greensboro working at the Mock Judson Hosiery, also worked at the Wesley Long Hospital and was a former member of St. John's Methodist Church for 60 years. She was a gentle lady with a caring spirit. Her faith continually guided her and she inspired others. She had a lifelong love of flowers, reading her Bible, the Upper Room, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Mrs. Sharp was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Elwood Sharp on May 15, 1969; brothers, Barringer Phillips, Spinks Phillips; and sisters, Nina P. Goins, Allie Phillips, and Amy P. Wilson.

She is survived by one brother, Dabney Phillips of Bear Creek; 18 nieces and nephews; Elmo and husband, Bobby Phillips; Carolyn Creger; Gail and husband, Roy Guthrie; Carol and husband, Jerry Wilson; Susan and husband, Paul Pav; Katherine and husband, Earlie Brady; Shirley Martin; Garland and wife, Peggy Phillips; Jerry and wife, Pat Phillips; Gerald and wife, Marion Phillips; Earl Phillips; Lewis and wife, Pat Phillips; Riley and wife, Ann Phillips; Gordon and wife, Cathy Phillips; William and wife, Teresa Phillips; Roger Phillips; Roland and wife, Carolyn Phillips; David and wife, Molly Wilson. There are several great nieces and nephews and cousin, Margaret Sharp Lawing.
The family received friends Monday August 16, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. The graveside service was held Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Fair Promise United Methodist Church where she was a member, with Jonathan Mills officiating. At other times, the family was at the home of Elmo and Bobby Phillips, 5885 NC Hwy 42, Bear Creek.

DON CEITZ SMITH

Don Ceitz Smith, 93, of 1011 Candlewood Circle, Siler City, died Friday, August 13, 2010 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.
Mr. Smith was born September 27, 1916, the son of John C. and Roxie Thompson Smith. He was a native of Chatham County, a 1934 graduate of Staley High School and a member of Moon's Chapel Baptist Church. He was a retired dairy farmer and a former co-owner of Smith Brothers Trucking Company. Don was preceded in death by his parents, John and Roxie Thompson Smith, brothers, Thompson and Clymer Smith and sisters, Menzel and Hazel Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Elma Kelly-Smith; one brother, Billy Smith; nieces, Lydia S. Snipes, Roxanna S. Bryant; nephews, "Chip" Smith, Lynn Smith, Elton Smith and several great-nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Land Fund, 175 Moon's Chapel Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

HILDA BROWN BREWER

Hilda Brown Brewer, 96, of 1091 Bennett-Siler City Road, Bennett died Friday, August 13, 2010 at Coventry House of Siler City.

Mrs. Brewer was born August 28, 1913, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Ina Bray Brown. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship. She enjoyed quilting and playing rook. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Gean Brewer and brothers, Clint, Howard, Lynn and Buster Brown.

She is survived by one son, Bill G. Brewer and wife, Pat of Bennett; one sister, Myrtle B. Teague of Bennett; three brothers, Coy Brown and wife, Fern of Siler City, Colon Brown and wife, Inez of Bear Creek, Norman Brown and wife, Mary Lea of Bennett; grandson, Andrew Brewer of Bennett; granddaughter, Susan B. Hussey and husband, Travis of Bear Creek; great-granddaughter, Kelsey Hussey; and very special friends, Katy Krombach and David Smith.

The family received friends Saturday, August 14, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and at other times at the home of Andrew Brewer, 233 Lewis Brown Road, Bennett. The funeral was held Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 5 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, 5946 Pleasant Grove Church Road, Bennett with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Kenneth Huggins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

MARJORIE HARPER BELL

Marjorie Harper Bell, 87, of 404 West Tenth Street, Siler City died Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the home of her daughter after an extended illness.

Mrs. Bell was born September 21, 1922, the daughter of William Benjamin and Kate Powell Harper. She was born and raised in Rocky Mount, a graduate of Hardbarger Business College of Raleigh and a homemaker. She served many years as church secretary at the Second Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mount. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, William Hoyt Bell and her parents, William B. and Kate Powell Harper.

She is survived by one daughter, Myra Bell Johnson and husband, Philip of Siler City; one brother, Willis Laverne Harper and wife, Lucy; grandson, Philip Todd Johnson; great-grandson, Christian Pike; great-granddaughters, Charlotte Johnson and Tristan Breath; niece, Susan Harper Nipper and nephew, Michael Harper.

The graveside service will be Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Rev. Sue Flippin and Rev. William E. Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from following the graveside service at Siler City Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

JOHN HEBRON KIRBY

Dale, Indiana – John Hebron Kirby, 84, passed away Monday, August 2, 2010 at Transcendent Health Care in Booneville, Indiana.

Hebron was the son of Foy Parrish Kirby and Clara Cash Kirby; he was born in Chatham County on April 24, 1926. After attending Pittsboro Schools and graduating with honors from Pittsboro High School in the Class of 1943, he participated in the Navy V12 program at U.N.C. Hebron was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater as a medical petty officer. Upon discharge from the Navy, Hebron attended Bliss Electrical Institute and then worked for IBM Corporation. He was employed with Double Cola Bottling Works of Chattanooga, Tennessee for 45 years, where he achieved the position of National Vice President of Sales. After Hebron's retirement from Double Cola he enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and fishing on his farm in Dale, Indiana.

Hebron is survived by his sisters, Rachel Kirby Parrish of Chapel Hill, Leah Kirby Cheek of Spartanburg, South Carolina and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Robbie S. Kirby and his parents Foy and Clara Kirby.

Services for Hebron were held Saturday, August 7, 2010 in Booneville, Indiana and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Newburgh, Indiana.

CLAUDIA WALTERS FOUSHEE

Mrs. Claudia Walters Foushee, 78, of Pittsboro died at her home on Wednesday (08-04-2010).

Service to celebrate her life was held at 11 a.m., Saturday (08-07-2010) at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Pastor Jimmy Owens and Pastor Sam Gore presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Alamance County on May 10, 1932, Mrs. Foushee was a daughter of Richard D. and Lola C. Herron Walters. She was retired from Chatham Hosiery Mills, previously worked for Carr Mills, andwas a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Alfred Jordan Foushee.

Survivors include sons, Larry Smith of Pittsboro, Robert Manring of Roxboro, Jimmy Manring, Teddy Manring, both of Pittsboro; daughters, Louise Lefler of Pittsboro, Amanda Witting of Zebulon, Donna Bass of Chapel Hill, Kathy Manring of Pittsboro; brothers, Floyd Walters of Florida, Clarence Walters of Pittsboro; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.

Memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

LILA STATON

Lila Staton, 89, of Siler City Care and Rehabilitation died Wednesday, (08-04-2010) at Chatham Hospital.

The funeral was conducted by Bodkin Funeral Home of Milan, Tennessee with burial in Pisgah Cemetery, Atwood, Tennessee.

Mrs. Staton was born June 30, 1921, the daughter of John Thomas and Esker Capps Butler. She was a native of Gibson County, Tennessee and worked in the school system as a cafeteria cook.

Survivors include a son, Joe Staton of Kingston, NY; daughter, Janice Crank of Bear Creek; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

MARGARET ANN KEEN DAVIS

Mrs. Margaret Ann Keen Davis, 74, of Siler City, died Monday (08-09-2010) at her home.

No services are planned at this time. The family will receive friends at the home on Gilliland Road, Saturday, (08-14-2010) from 4 until 6 p.m.

Mrs. Davis was native of Tampa, Florida and retired as a secretary for Merrill & Associates.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Cecil Davis of the home; daughter, Helen Davis of Siler City; step-son, Donald Davis of Georgia; and step-daughter, Ruby Davis of Albemarle; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1414 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett is serving the family.

EDNA FARRELL MANN

Mrs. Edna Farrell Mann, 97, of Pittsboro, passed away Monday, (08-09-2010), at her home.

The service to celebrate herlife will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (08-12-2010) from Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Mann, the daughter of Eugene Milton Farrell and Ruby Pendergrass Farrell, was born December 6, 1912 in Chatham County. She retired from Pittsboro Throwing, after 45 years of service, and was a member of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ.

Survivors include five grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Seaton Mann, and a son, Winfred Leroy Mann.

Friends visited with the family from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro and at other times at Mrs. Mann’s residence.

Memorials may be made to Hanks Chapel UCC Piano and Organ Fund, PO Box 366, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

REBECCA “BECKY” BREWER EVANS

Rebecca "Becky" Brewer Evans, 66, of 715 Apt. A, East Cardinal Street, Siler City died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Evans was born September 14, 1943, the daughter of Marcus H. and Exie Sumner Brewer. She was a Chatham County native, had worked for Glendale Hosiery and as manager of Brownie Lu Restaurant. Becky enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping, traveling to the mountains and listening to country and gospel music. Becky was preceded in death by her husband, Glen "Buddy" Evans; sisters, Ruby Thompson, Jean Vernon and Barbara Camp.

She is survived by one daughter, April E. Culberson and husband, Jerry of Siler City; sister, Patsy B. Stewart of Siler City; brother, Darrell Brewer of Siler City; grandchildren, Daniel Shawn Culberson (Mayhew), Glen Jason Culberson, Charity Grace and Michaela Sue Culberson; adopted honorary brother, Buck Mansfield and wife, Jean of Burlington; adopted honorary sisters, Geneva Williams, Phyllis Cook; many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Friday, August 6, 2010 from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, and other times at the home of April and Jerry Culberson. The funeral was held Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Rocky River Baptist Church Building Fund, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

FRANK DUNCAN HAYES

Frank Duncan Hayes, 95, of Goldston, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, born February 4, 1915, passed away August 7, 2010. Mr. Hayes was the middle of seven children of Robert E. and Della Murchison Hayes. He grew up in Fayetteville, and graduated from Kings Business School. On July 5, 1941, Mr. Hayes married Mary Lois Harris. Prior to her death in 2001, they celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage. Mr. Hayes was a veteran of WW II, serving in Italy, France and North Africa. After returning home he became co-owner of Harris Lumber Company. Mr. Hayes was a founding member of Goldston Lions Club and served on various boards and committees of the Goldston United Methodist Church during the 63 years he was member. He also served on the Goldston Town Council and actively supported the Goldston schools, especially with fundraising projects. Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by brothers, Earl, Alton Edward and a sister, Mary Ruth H. Clark.

Surviving is his beloved family; daughters, Susan Hayes Kaydos and husband Will, Lois Hayes Chamblee and husband Mark all, of Raleigh; son, Frank D. Hayes, Jr. and wife, Joretta of Mebane; Grandchildren, W. Jonn Caddes, S. Cornelia Kaydos-Daniels (Richard), Emilie Kaydos Gibson (Christopher), and Mary and Hayes Chamblee; Great-grandchildren, Sylvie and Lucy Kaydos-Daniels, Russell and Shane Gibson; Brother, Charles A. Hayes and wife, Merle; and sister, Della Hayes Stevens all of Fayetteville.

The family would like to thank his caregivers, especially Bertha Turman, who enabled him to remain in his home.

The family will receive friends at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Tuesday, August 10, 2010 from 6 until 8 p.m. The funeral will be on Wednesday August 11, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Goldston United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Goldston Cemetery.

BILLY TILLMAN DOWDY

Billy Tillman Dowdy, 66, of Cobblestone Lane, Pittsboro, died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in his home following a period of declining health. A Lee County native, Billy was born March 12, 1944 to Raymond Dowdy and Margarete Tillman Dowdy. His Christian faith was Methodist.

Billy was retired from Chatham Mills and was the owner of Dowdy’s Repair Shop, specializing in small engine work.

Survivors include his caretaker, sister-in-law Linda Dowdy of Pittsboro; nephews, Dennis Dowdy of Pittsboro, Russell Dowdy of Goldston; “adopted” nephew, Casey Burnette of Pittsboro; nieces, Laura Dowdy of Pittsboro, Lou Huffman of Pollock, LA, Joy Wilson of Vass; three great-nieces, Lisa Hancock of Goldston, Brandi and Candice Dowdy of Pittsboro; as well as several other great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Janice Dowdy, and brother Oren “Butch” Dowdy.

The service to celebrate Billy Dowdy’s life was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro with Rev. Patrick Sinclair presiding. Cremation will follow at Hall - Wynne Crematory. Friends visited with the family immediately after the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Chatham County Council on Aging (provider of Meals on Wheels), PO Box 715, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Arrangements for Mr. Dowdy are under the care of Hall – Wynne Funeral Home of Pittsboro.
