James D. Cook, 69, died Tuesday (01/12/2010) at his home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

SUE BUNTON OVERMAN

Hattie Sue Bunton Overman, 78, of Liberty died Friday (01-15-2010) at Durham Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, (01-24-2010) at Pleasant Hill Christian Church with Rev. Howard Spray and Rev. Noah Albarez officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Hut at the church.

Mrs. Overman was the daughter of the late Charlie and Hattie Coble Bunton and was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Glenn Overman, sisters, Rita A. Hodgin, Betty J. Layton and brothers, Wilson Bunton and Chesley Bunton.

Survivors include a daughter, Edith Lorraine Overman; and brother, Andy Bunton.

Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty is serving the family.

MOLLIE ANN JOHNSON REYNOLDS

Mollie Ann Johnson Reynolds, 90, of New Hill died Friday (01-15-2010) at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held Monday (01-18-2010) at 2 p.m. at Buckhorn United Methodist Church with Rev. Janet Balasko officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Reynolds was born December 7, 1919 in Harnett County, the daughter of the late Carlie Lester Johnson and Dora Elizabeth Wilson Johnson. She was a member of Buckhorn United Methodist Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Reynolds, daughters, Beatrice Mitchell, Mary Alice Rooks and brother, Andrew Johnson.

Survivors include daughters, Lois Partin, Mary Helen Cotten, both of New Hill, Linda Burgess of Moncure, Ruby Amos of Pittsboro; sister, Katie Johnson of Siler City; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

JERRY EUGENE MORROW

Jerry Eugene Morrow, 52, of Norwalk, OH died Tuesday, (01-05-2010) at his residence.

Mr. Morrow was born December 31, 1957 in Norwalk, OH the son of Aaron “Gene” and Ruth Morrow. He was a graduate of Western Reserve High School, and served in the US Army. He made his career working for Gene Morrow Roofing in Siler City. He was a member of the Norwalk American Legion Post 41, Moose Lodge 1248 and Elyria Eagles Aerie 431.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda White Morrow of NC; children, Timothy Morrow, Michael Morrow, Jeremy Morrow, all of Norwalk; parents, Aaron Eugene Morrow and Ruth Marie Burdue Morrow; siblings, Alice Shirey of NC, Laura Norwood, Vicky Canterbury, both of Norwalk, OH, Charles Morrow, Christopher Morrow, both of NC; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Morrow was preceded in death by his grandparents, Guy and Helen Burdue and Leonard and Lora Wilbur.

HENRY LEE MEADOWS

Henry Lee Meadows, 68, of Sanford, died Thursday (01-14-2010) at his home.

Funeral services were held Saturday (01-16-2010) at 3 p.m. at Lee’s Chapel Christian Church with Rev. James Bowden officiating. Burial followed in the Moncure Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Meadows was born December 14, 1941, the son of the late Henry and Effie Mae Day Meadows. He was retired from the U.S. Army and was a member of the VFW Post in Sanford. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Johnnie Meadows, Bud Meadows and Gerald Meadows.

Survivors include his wife, Callie S. Meadows of the home; daughters, Angel Meadows of the home, Tammy East of Sanford; son, Steve Meadows of Hope Well, VA; sisters, Dallas Lou Shuemate of Columbus, OH, Mary Jane Wheatley of Reminderville, OH, Wanda Gray of VA and Peggy Meadows of Beckley, WV; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

SHERMAN LEE HARRIS

Herman Lee Harris, 61, of Sanford died Friday (01-15-2010) at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday (01-22-2010) at Alston Chapel United Holiness Church, Pittsboro. Visitation will be held one hour prior to that service at the church.

MRS. JULIA ALSTON

Mrs. Julia Alston, 87, of Siler City died Monday (01-18-2010) at her home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday (01-23-2010) at Evans Chapel AME Zion Church, with Rev. Kenneth L. Swan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Alston was a member of Evans Chapel AME Zion Church, and a retired teacher from W.B. Wicker School in Sanford.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary F. Alston of Siler City; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family is available for visitation at 405 East Fourth Street.

JASON TODD MORRIS

Jason Todd Morris, 30, of Siler City died Monday, (01-04-2010).

The funeral was held Thursday, (01-07-2010) at 2 p.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church, with Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Morris was born July 5, 1979, the son of Donnie and Wanda Thrift Morris. He was born in Orange County, and the owner of A Clear Choice Glass Company. He enjoyed going to the beach, riding four wheelers and snow skiing. Jason loved to build and had built his own home.
He is survived by fiancée, Cecile Teague of Siler City; one daughter, Kelsey Morris of the home; mother and step-father, Wanda Thrift Ellis and husband, Luke of Siler City; father and step-mother, Donnie Morris and wife, Penny of Siler City; one sister, Haley Morris of Siler City; brothers, Michael, Joey, Nicholas Morris, Jeremy Ellis all of Siler City; and grandmother, Vivian Thrift of Siler City.

FREDERICK T. HARPSTER

Frederick T. Harpster, 82, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, DE.

A retired quality control expert in the hosiery industry, Fred was born in Danville, PA, the son of the late William Herrold Harpster and Erma Smith Harpster.

He lived in Holyoke, MA, Washington, NJ and Asbury, NJ before moving to Delaware in 1950, where he was employed by the old Portland Hosiery Mill on Atlantic Street in Milton. From 1965 to 1970, he lived in Siler City, NC, where he was employed by Kellwood Corporation. He returned to Milton in 1970 and worked for the Marclay Hosiery Mill in Milford. He retired in 1989 from ILC in Frederica, which dealt in government contracts.

Mr. Harpster was a 1945 graduate of the old Washington (NJ) High School. He served as an Infantryman in the US Army from 1945 to 1947, a year of which was spent in Korea with the Occupational Forces. He is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a avid fresh-water fly fisherman and often traveled to northwest New Jersey to fish in the mountain streams of that region where he spent his youth. To his friends and acquaintances, he was considered an expert on fishing. He was also a skilled small-game hunter.

He is survived by a son, Frederick W. “Rick”; a daughter, Wendy Harpster and her fiancé, Bill Woodall of Milton; one brother, Bruce W. Harpster of Venice, FL; four grandchildren, Stephanie Harpster of Milton, Brian, Corrine and Craig Harpster of Millsboro; two great-grandsons, Keilo and Jayden King of Milton; three nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2009 at the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, where friends called after 12 noon. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. A reception to celebrate his life followed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Home of the Brave Veterans Shelter, 6632 Sharps Road, Milford, DE 19963.

C. B. BROOKS

C B Brooks, 96, of 1401 West 11th Street, Siler City died Friday, January 15, 2010 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mr. Brooks was born June 1, 1913, the son of George W. and Elizabeth Cook Brooks. He was a native of Chatham County, an Army Veteran of WW II, having served in Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

C B was an employee of Smith & Buckner Funeral Home for 23 years and a retired poultry farmer. He was an active member of Loves Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's #3 Sunday School Class. C B was a member of the American Legion Post # 93 for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Stone Brooks; a son, Michael Lee Brooks; brothers, Bill, Jack, Sr., Everette and Ikie Brooks; sisters, Rachel Jones, Katy Johnson, and Elizabeth Satterfield.

He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family received friends Sunday, January 17, 2010 following the service at Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th, Siler City, N C 27344. The funeral was held Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Moore and Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th Siler City, N C 27344, Siler City, NC 27344.

JOSIE M. GLOVER

Josie Mae Glover, 101 of Siler City, died Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Chatham Hospital. Miss Glover was born May 1, 1908.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Farrar Funeral Home with Rev. David Scotton officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Survivors include an adopted daughter, Mrs. Brenda M. Brower of Siler City; sister-in-law, Inez Glover of Siler City; three nieces, Peggy Foxx, Essie Wright, Bettie Bittle, all of Siler City; nephews, Billy Glover of Greensboro, Mark Foxx, June Foxx, Wayne Glover, all of Siler City; and special cousin, Joyce Alston.

RUTH VIRGINIA THOMAS BUDD

Ruth Virginia Thomas Budd of Siler City died Tuesday, January 19, 2010, following complications from pneumonia.

She was born November 7, 1923, to Maude Lillard Thomas and William Clyde Thomas, M.D. Her father came to Siler City in 1917 after graduating from the Medical College of Virginia and later purchased the Siler house which he established as the original Chatham Hospital. She died at the (new) Chatham Hospital 86 years later.

Her mother, a nurse, was a vocal proponent of nutrition and introduced hot meals into Chatham County Schools when she brought soup prepared every Friday in her kitchen to the students at Henry Siler School where her daughters attended as well as her great-grandsons four decades later.

Mrs. Budd is survived by her son, Thomas Michael Budd and wife Fabienne and daughter Cecilia Budd Grimes and husband John, all of Siler City. Survivors also include four grandchildren, John Thomas Grimes of Clemmons, Stephen Grimes of Mt. Vernon Springs, Virginia King-Barker of Raleigh, and Alisa Marie King presently residing in Singapore; eight great-grandchildren, Alaina, Jonathan, Abigail, Tucker, Sabrina, Declan, Isabella and Byron; one sister, Barbara Wrenn of Wilmington, seven nieces, seven nephews, special neighbors and devoted friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil (Obie) Budd and a daughter, Anna Kathryn Budd King, an infant sister, and her parents.

Mrs. Budd graduated from Siler City High School and attended Campbell College for one year. She was a repeat gold medalist in debate at the state level of competition. She was a worker in the Cradle Roll and a teacher in the primary department, chair of the benevolence committee, and treasurer of the Mary Hester Powell Circle at her church. She and her husband owned and operated Cecil Budd Tire Company, LLC, a third-generation business operating its 74th year in 2010.

Mrs. Budd was the first woman to sit on a school board in Chatham County.

Five generations of her family have been members of the First Baptist Church in Siler City, where her memorial service and celebration of life will be held Thursday, January 21, at 11:00 a.m.

The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional, loving, and compassionate care by the staffs at Chatham Hospital and Universal Health Care in Ramseur.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City.
