ROY WILFORD CARTER

Roy Wilford Carter, 84, of Liberty died Monday, (12-21-09) at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, (12-23-09) at 2 p.m. at Rocky River Friends Meeting with David Hobson officiating.

Mr. Carter worked at Kivetts Auto, Liberty Chevrolet and operated a lawn mower service for 35 years. He was a volunteer for the Liberty Fire Department and had served on Liberty Town Council. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lola McPherson Carter, one sister and brother, Hampton Carter.

Surviving is his wife, Lottie Carter of the home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rocky River Friends Meeting, c/o Karen Pike, 802 Dogwood Ave., Siler City, N.C. 27344.

HELEN GARNER McDOWELL

Helen Garner McDowell, 67, of Liberty. died Tuesday (12-22-09) at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (12-24-09) at High Falls Wesleyan Church with Rev. Roger Riffe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. McDowell was a Chatham county native, a graduate of High Falls High School, and a member of HighFalls Wesleyan Church. She retired from Brookwood Farms in Siler City.

Survivors include her husband, Carl “Jerry” McDowell of the home; sons, Randy McDowell of Asheboro, Richard McDowell of Ocean Isle Beach; mother, Nova Hussey Garner of Bennett; sister, Shirley F. Garner of Bennett; brother, Johnnie Garner of Bennett; and two grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (12-23-09) from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett and at other times at the home of her mother at 259 Carlyle Rd. Bennett.

Memorials may be directed to High Falls Wesleyan Cemetery Fund, c/o Theodore Phillips, 216 Phillips Rd. Bennett, NC 27208; or to Happy Hills Animal Foundation, Inc., 3143 Happy Hills Road, Staley, N.C. 27355.

ALICE GILLIAM GRIFFITH

Alice Gilliam Griffith, 96, previously from Siler City, North Carolina died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Rex Hospital after a short illness.

Born April 19, 1913, in Appomattox, Virginia, Mrs. Griffith was the daughter of the late Herbert Spencer Gilliam and Lessie Moore Hill. She was the second of four children. She is predeceased by her sister, Fanny Moore Gilliam Barker, and her brothers, Thomas Spencer Gilliam and Henry Edward Gilliam.

Mrs. Griffith moved from Virginia to Statesville, NC as a child. In 1934, she graduated from Meredith College with a degree in elementary education. On June 14, 1935 she married the love of her life, the late Lloyd Kyle Griffith. After the war, she lived in Charlotte where Griff worked with the Chevrolet Motor Division. In 1953, she moved to Siler City where Griff became the President of Chatham Motors Chevrolet Company. She was a very popular teacher at Paul Braxton Elementary School where she taught third grade.

Alice spent her life helping others. For many years she was the president of the Chatham Hospital Auxiliary. She and Griff enjoyed sharing roses from their large garden with friends and strangers. She was quick to think of everyone but herself and did many acts of charity in her community.

Alice was an avid bridge player and especially enjoyed bridge at the beach with her good friends from Siler City. After Griff's death, she loved traveling with her daughter to such interesting destinations as Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and Colorado. She enjoyed needle work and leaves many beautiful pieces behind to be cherished by her family.

Mrs. Griffith was a member of the First Baptist Church in Siler City.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Griffith McEnery; her son-in-law, James Jeffrey McEnery; her grandchildren, Michael Kyle McEnery and Katharine Spencer McEnery from Raleigh and her niece, Frances Covington from Oak Island, NC. She is predeceased by her infant son, Tommy Lee Griffith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Alumnae Scholarship Fund at Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27607 or to the Music Fund at the First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

A private graveside service for family and close friends was held on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC. A memorial service celebrating the life of Alice Griffith was held on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Siler City with Rev. Jim Wall officiating. The family received friends immediately following the memorial service at the church.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home of Siler City is assisting the family.

WILLIAM RALPH PARKER, SR.

William Ralph Parker, Sr., 83, of Siler City died Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation in Siler City.

Mr. Parker was born October 23, 1926, the son of James Howard and Rosa Fleming Parker. He was born in Edgecombe County, a member of Siler City Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon. He had worked for the Chatham News Publishing Company and was a substitute rural mail carrier. He was instrumental in the construction of the West Chatham Veteran's Memorial Wall at Bray Park, a member of the Siler City Fire Department and a member of the Siler City Lions Club for 20 years, past president and where he received numerous honors and awards including the Jack Stickley Fellowship award and the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Ralph was a Navy veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Howard and Rosa Fleming Parker; sisters, Rosalie Thompson, Louise Davis, Elizabeth Medford, Reeka Karn, Virginia Davenport; and a brother, Tom Parker.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Green Parker; one daughter, Karen P. and husband, William Middleton Holmes of Wilmington; one son, William Ralph Parker, Jr. and wife, Tammy of Lillington; grandchildren, Lauren and Parker Holmes, William C. Parker; one brother, Jim Parker and wife, Hallie of Chapel Hill; and several nieces and nephews, The family received friends Saturday, December 19, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 W. 3rd St., Siler City with Rev. Sue Flippin officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by the Randolph Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 W. 3rd St., Siler City, NC 27344; or Siler City Lions, % Lee Harvey, 383 Eden Hills, Siler City, NC 27344.

HELEN WORKMAN WOODY

Helen Workman Woody, 83, of Morris Road in Pittsboro died December 18, 2009 at her home. A native of Cany, Oklahoma, Mrs. Workman was born June 13, 1926 to Jennings and Lora Smith Workman. She was a retired cosmetician, and a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Sandra Woody of Pittsboro; daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Brent Blietz of Charlotte, Sharon and David Scott of Pittsboro, Diane Ramsey and her children, Matthew Caddle and Rachel Fields of Pittsboro; brothers, Travis, Wayne and Harley Workman all of Oklahoma City, OK; seventeen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.Her husband James, and son Michael, preceded her in death.

The service to celebrate Mrs. Woody’s life was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Robinson presiding. Friends visited with the family immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or to Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Arrangements were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service & Cremation, Griffin Chapel, of Pittsboro.

MARVIN RONALD LINDLEY

Marvin Ronald Lindley, 84, of 415 Silk Hope Road died Monday, December 21, 2009 at VA Medical Center in Durham.

Mr. Lindley was born July 14, 1925, the son of Percy and Lula Guthrie Lindley. He was a native of Chatham County, a retired poultry field man with Gold Kist with 35 years of service. He was a faithful member of Loves Creek Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He was an Army veteran of WW II. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Mann Lindley; and a son, Larry Lindley.

He is survived by four sons, Ronnie Lindley of Snow Camp, Jerry Lindley of Bear Creek, Barry Lindley of Randolph County, Russell Lindley of Siler City; and ten grandchildren.
The family received friends Tuesday, December 22, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344, with Rev. Bob Boyd and Rev. J. R. Bouldin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites by the Randolph Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1745 East 11th Street, Siler City, N C 27344.

MILDRED GERALDINE PAIGE MATTHEWS

Mildred Geraldine Paige Matthews, 70, of Chatham County, died Sunday, (12-06-09) at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, (12-12-09) at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church with Pastor James A. Curry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Matthews was a member of Piney Ridge United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry D. Matthews and a son, Ronald Lee Matthews.

Survivors include sons, Walter Matthews of Siler City, Lester Matthews of Asheboro, Michael Matthews of Greensboro, Charles Matthews of Liberty; daughter, Sarah Ann Jones of Marrero, La.; sisters, Jessie Martin of Siler City, Helen Dorsey of Louisiana,

Jean Durham of Pittsboro, Dorothy Rogers of California; brothers, James Paige, Bill Paige, both of Siler City; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren

ELGE EDWARDS

Elge Edwards, 75, of Siler City died Saturday (12-05-09) at Sunbridge Care of Siler City.

Funeral services were held Friday (12-11-09) at Corinth AME Zion Church with Mary J. Turner officiating.

Mr. Edwards was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Chatham High School, and retired from Boling Chair Company.

Survivors include a daughter, Ella Janet Edwards; brothers, George Edwards of Hillsboro; sisters, Ruth Hausley of Philadelphia, PA, Denise E. Darlington of Winchester, MA; and one grandchild.

BRODIE HORTON

Mr. Robert Brodie Horton, 77, of Chapel Hill, died Tuesday, (12-08-09) at UNC Hospital.

The service to celebrate his life was be held at 2 p.m., Friday, (12-11-09) at the Church of Living Water, with Pastor James Mitchell presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Horton was born in Chatham County, the son of Truby and Vesta Merritte Horton. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict, and was a member of Church of Living Water in Staley. He retired as owner/ operator of Horton’s TV Service, and worked at Carolina Meadows. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Thornburg, and his wife, Norma Neems Horton.

Survivors include his son, Bobby Horton of Siler City, Tom Godwin of Durham; daughters, Jennifer Golat of Pittsboro, Sherrie Mooney of White Cross, Lucy Godfrey of Mebane; brothers JT Horton of Chapel Hill, Weldon Horton of Pittsboro; and two grandchildren.

ELI S. JONES

Eli Swanson Jones, 78, of Bennett, died Friday, (12-11-09) at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday (12-15-09) at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Rowland, Rev. Ed Carter, and Dr. Norman A. Hubbard officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He was born in Randolph County, where he spent many years farming, and he retired from Ramseur Interlock. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he had served as chairman of the board, Sunday school superintendent and for many years as church treasurer and a choir member.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Garner Jones of Bennett; sons, Steven Jones, Randy Jones, both of Bennett; brother, Henry Jones, of Asheboro; and two grandchildren and Jacob Jones, both of Bennett.

Memorials may be made to, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, c/o Linda Brown, 6812 Joe Branson Rd., Bennett, NC 27208.

ELAINE CLAPP WEBSTER

Elaine Clapp Webster, 74, of 2929 Mt. Vernon Springs Road, Siler City died Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Mrs. Webster was born January 31, 1935, the daughter of Ben and Josie Wright Clapp, Sr. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church, where she served as organist for 40 years and church historian. Elaine was devoted to her church, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death a brother, Ben Clapp, Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Edward Webster; four sons, James Edward Webster of Siler City, Richard Allen Webster and wife, Faye of Bennett, Farley Grant Webster and wife, Susan of Bear Creek, Eric Manson Webster and wife, Gina of Siler City; three sisters, Marlene C. Brown of Bear Creek, Norma C. Josey of Sanford, Linda C. Koonce of Bear Creek; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Tuesday, December 15, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the family home.

The funeral was held Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church, 125 Mt. Vernon Springs Road, Siler City with Rev. Wyatt Coley and Rev. Cecil Callis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
