CLAUDE J. HEARD

Claude J. Heard of 8835 US Hwy 64 West, Siler City died Sunday, December 6, 2009. He was born July 4, 1924 in Canton, Georgia, the son of Joseph Benson Heard and Alice Mae Goode. Mr. Heard lived in Georgia for 33 years before moving to Siler City with his wife and children to establish a branch of Bradshaw Supply Co., a poultry supply warehouse based in Canton, GA. He later retired from Selig Manufacturing Co. in Siler City. Claude was a Navy veteran of WW II and a member of Joy Baptist Church, Siler City, where he served in various leadership roles through his love of the Lord. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Weldon and Lawrence.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Bobo) Heard; one daughter, Carole H. Barr and husband, Wayne Barr, Jr.; one son, Donald M. Heard and wife, Ruth Simmons Heard; three sisters, Lela Calhoun of Canton, GA, Edith Clark of Ballground, GA, Lorene Thompson of Canton, GA; one brother, Walter Heard of Canton, GA; grandchildren, Chris Barr and wife, Michelle Kunkle of Kings Mountain, Keri Barr Henley and husband, Mark of Mt. Holly, Joseph Heard of Raleigh; step-granddaughters, Tonya and Donna Smith of Liberty; great-grandchildren, Alex Barr and Kiya Henley; step-great grandchildren, Alexis Henley, Hannah and Adam Rierson, Elaina Staley; and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 1-2 p.m. at Joy Baptist Church, 61 Bower Store Road, Siler City. The funeral will be Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Joy Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney "Charlie" Staley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Joy Baptist Church, 61 Bower Store Road, Siler City, NC 27344; or Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family.

COLONEL GERALD HOWE TOTTEN, Retired

Colonel Gerald Howe Totten, Retired, 77, of Siler City, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Brush Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Al Martin, Rev. Brian Parker, and Chaplin LTC John R. Bouldin. Cremation with burial at sea by the U.S. Navy.

Colonel Totten served 31 years active duty with the United States Marine Corps. After retirement, he was active in community politics, most recently devoted to the children by serving on the School Board. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ashley L. Suits.

Survivors include his wife Barbara H. Totten of the home; daughters, Lezlie T. Suits and husband Norman of Bear Creek, Tracy L. Totten of Dunedin, Florida; granddaughter, Amber Suits Ellis and husband Justin; grandsons, Jacob Sizemore, and Gerry Sizemore, of Dunedin, Florida. Visitation was held at the family home.

MICHAEL LEE SMITH, JR.

Michael Lee Smith, Jr., 29, of Siler City died Saturday (11-28-09) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (12-01-09) at Moons Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Faw officiating

Mr. Smith was a native of Beckley, WV, a carpet and floor covering installer and a member of Moons Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Cindy and Doug Poindexter of Siler City; son, Taylor Smith of Cocoa, FL, sister, Danielle Smith of Siler City; grandparents, Stella R. and Charles V. Brown of Crab Orchard, WV and Betty Hubbard of Beckley, WV.

Memorials may be directed to the Smith Trust Fund set up by the Chamber of Commerce at RBC Bank in Siler City.

JAMES ROBERT HEADEN

James Robert Headen, 67, of Siler City died Sunday, (11-20-09) at his residence. He was the son of Clyde M. and Mary Frances Jones Headen.

Graveside services will be Thursday, (12-03-09) at 11 a.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, with Rev. Bob Boyd officiating.

Mr. Headen was a native of Chatham County and a veteran of the Army National Guard. He completed BLET training and worked as a park ranger at Hyco Lake. After retiring from law enforcement he was a truck driver for Moore Machine. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Frances Jones Headen and a step-son, Jimmy Blackmon.

He is survived by his wife: Daynelle Creekmore Headen of the home; step-daughters, Eleanor B. Felton, Elaine Blackmon, both of Hope Mills; step-son, Donnie Ray Blackmon of Shreveport, LA; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (12-02-09) from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

KENNETH EILL

Kenneth Eill, 83, of Pittsboro died at his home on Tuesday (10-20-09).

A memorial celebration will be held Saturday (12-05-09) at the Gathering Place in Fearrington Village at 2 p.m.

Mr. Eill was a native of New York City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After a stint at Decca records, he attended City College in New York, then was a Professor of Education at SUNY New Paltz, St. Johns and Hofstra Universities, and retired from Long Island University in Brooklyn. In retirement, he taught Jazz at the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement. He wrote and published two books, and was a active member of the N.C. Society of Ethical Culture.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; daughters, Meg Eill, Julie Eill Rickert; son, Will Eill; and two grandsons.

Memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

ANNE FINN CALDWELL

Anne Finn Caldwell, 64, Siler City died Monday, (11-30-09) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be Friday, (12-04-09) at 11 a.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Mountain Baptist Cemetery.

Mrs. Caldwell was the daughter of the late Atlas and Mildred Hilliard Finn. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of Emmaus Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Walter Francis Caldwell of the home; daughter, Emily C. Elmore of Siler City; mother, Mildred Hilliard Finn; sisters, Carol F. White of Pittsboro, Candy F. Wood of Liberty; brother, Atlas Thomas Finn. Jr. of Siler City; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, (12-03-09) from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

LYNNE BARBER ADAMSON

Mrs. Lynne Barber Adam-son, 89, of 260 Village Lake Road, Siler City, formerly of Roseboro, NC, passed away Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Coventry House in Siler City.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Roseboro Cemetery with Rev. Greg Burris and Rev. Bobby Herring officiating.

Mrs. Adamson was a member of Roseboro United Methodist Church and was a former church secretary.

Mrs. Adamson is survived by sister-in-law, Mrs. Johnnie E. Barber of Charlotte; three nieces, Sallie T. Milholen of Siler City, Barbara T. Diver of Sanford, Janice B. Helms of Lumberton; two nephews, Mills M. Barber, Jr. of Charlotte, Don Arthur Barber of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and many great-nieces and nephews.

Services entrusted to Butler Funeral Home, 401 W. Roseboro Street, Roseboro.

B.J. Hunt

Greensboro – Betty Jo Hunt went to be with the Lord on November 25, 2009 after a courageous seven-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 5. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

She was born October 4, 1941 in Charleston, West Virginia to the late Lawrence Preston Mangus and Leva Elizabeth Mangus. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Glen Lewis Hunt, a sister, Margaret Anne Humphries, and a brother, Lawrence Preston Mangus Jr.

BJ graduated from West Virginia University and remained an avid supporter and fan of all things WVU throughout her life. She was a teacher at heart, as well as in training, and enjoyed helping others with her skills as a seamstress, co-founding Sewphisticated Alterations Shoppe; cook, hostess, elementary age reading tutor, and more. She was devoted to her church, where she was a member for over 40 years, serving in the Chancel Choir, hand-bell ensemble, youth summer mission trip team, Sunday school teacher, kitchen ministry, and Stephen Minister. She also performed with the Choral Society of Greensboro. BJ never met a stranger and made special friends from Greensboro to Bennett and to Oak Island. She will be remembered as one truly uniquely and wonderfully made.

She is survived by her two daughters, Allison Pickard and husband Bill of Apex, Merikay Tillman and husband Jeff of Greensboro; a son, Geoff Hunt of Greensboro; grandchildren, Melinda Pulido, Ashley Pickard, Owen Pickard, Harrison Tillman, and Emma Freda Tillman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CUMC Youth Building Fund; the CUMC Music Ministries, 410 N. Holden Rd. Greensboro, NC 27410; the Caswell Turtle Watch of Oak Island, www.caswellturtle watch.org.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ha and his nurse Cynthia, at the Regional Cancer Center; Comfort Keepers; and Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro for their kind and compassionate care.

PRINCE ALBERT FOX

Mr. Prince Albert Fox, 93, of Siler City died Sunday, November 22, 2009.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Harris Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Scotton officiating. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Fox, born October 17, 1916, was a self-employed handyman.

Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth McClain of Siler City; devoted caregivers and nieces, Nancy Rodgers, Ella Dark and Joann Foxx.

LARRY ETHAN BROWN

Larry Ethan Brown, age 60, of 201 North Garden Avenue, Siler City died Monday, November 30, 2009 at his residence.

Mr. Brown was born June 19, 1949, the son of Ethan and Swannie Hayes Brown. He was a native of Chatham County, retired from Pilgrams Pride and attended Victory Temple Holiness Church. Larry enjoyed going with his sister, Edna and nephew, David Frazier. He also enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by three sons, Chris Brown of Siler City, Adam Brown of Ramseur, Michael Brown of Siler City; god-son, Steve Brown of Siler City; three sisters, Edna Sams of Denton, Pauline Lednum of Franklinville, Lois White of Siler City; grandchildren, Christian, Tyler, Carlin and Colton Brown; nephew, David Frazier of Siler City; and niece, Judy Beal of Siler City.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The memorial service will be Friday, December 4, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Reggie Rakes officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park

JOE CECIL SEAWELL

Joe Cecil Seawell, 61, of Eagle Springs died Saturday (11-21-09) at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Browns Chapel Christian Church with Rev. Gary Waisner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late Oscar Seawell and Marie Boyette Seawell. He worked at Master Craft Fabrics in Siler City for 43 years and for a short time at Carthage Fabric. He was preceded in death by a sister Mary McGinnis.

Survivors include his wife Nancy Williams Seawell; son Davey Seawell of Eagle Springs; sisters, Carolyn Seawell of Robbins, Doris Wann of Asheboro, Laverne Seawell of Louisiana; brothers, Davis Seawell of Asheboro, Kenneth "Mickey" Seawell of Virginia, Clinton Seawell of Bennett; and one grandson.
