EMMIE DARK LANE
Emmie Dark Lane, 86, of 522 West Elk Street, Siler City, died September 29, 2009, following a lengthy illness
Mrs. Lane was born November 22, 1922, the daughter of Newby Judson Dark and Etna Cheek Dark. She was a native of Chatham County and a 1939 graduate of Siler City High School. She also graduated from Greensboro Women's College, now named University of North Carolina at Greensboro, class of 1943. She taught second grade for 40 years at Henry Siler Elementary School in Siler City. She was a charter member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international sorority for women educators. Mrs. Lane was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City. Her legacy of teaching will live on in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina Greensboro through the Emmie Dark Lane Scholarship.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by Brown Lane, her husband of 56 years, and brother, Newby Dark, Jr.
Survivors include her brother, M. Mead Dark and wife Imo, of Siler City; nephews, Morton Dark of Siler City, Phil Dark of Siler City, Judson Dark of Pittsboro; nieces, Carolyn Dark Setzer of Spartanburg, SC, Sharon Dark Monroe-Perryman of High Point; devoted friends, Bennie and Trudy Walters of Bear Creek.
Mrs. Lane also leaves loving caregivers, Claudia (Tookie) Graves, Linda Welch, Faye Brooks of Siler City and Ava Brower of Liberty.
Visitation will be graveside, Oakwood Cemetery, at ten o'clock, Thursday, October 1. Services will follow at 11 a.m. In case of inclement weather, services will be moved to Smith and Buckner Chapel.

RACHEL STALEY COOK
Rachel Staley Cook, 65, of Siler City died Thursday, (09-17-09) at Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.
The funeral was held Saturday, (09-19-09) at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ed Carter officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.
Mrs. Cook was the daughter of John W and Mary Kime Staley. She was a native of Randolph County, a weaver with Joan Fabrics and attended Maple Springs U.M.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Lewis Cook, Sr.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Kime Staley; daughter, Virginia C. Langley of Siler City; sons, Billy Lewis Cook, Jr. of Mexico, MO, David Cook of Durham; brothers, Robert Staley of Bear Creek, James Staley of Seagrove, Walter Staley of Seagrove; and eight grandchildren.

ANTHONY W. HENDERSON
Anthony W. Henderson, 40, of Spring Lake died at Laurels of Chatham Nursing Facility in Pittsboro on Thursday, (09-10-09).
A memorial service was held Saturday, (09-19-09) at 2 p.m. at Leon Randolph Funeral Home in Washington.
He is survived by his son, Marquez Henderson of Washington; and his father, David Becton of Greensboro.
WILLIAM KENT FUNSTON
William Kent Funston, 50, of Gulf died Thursday, (09-17-09) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.
A memorial service was held Saturday, (09-19-09) at 2:30 p.m. at Gulf Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Bruce Benton officiating.
Mr. Funston was born inStamford, CT, the son of Guy and Jane C. Miskie Funston. He lived most of his life in North Carolina and he was a well driller with Charles R. Underwood, Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Atkins Funston; daughter, Brandi Funston Ayers of Asheboro; father, Guy Funston of New Port; mother, Jane C. Miskie of Franklinton; sister, Sharon F. Estes of Zebulon; and brothers, Steven Funston of Stewart, FL and Todd Funston of Sanford.

DAVID SCOTT “SCOTTIE” HERRING
David Scott "Scottie" Herring, 35, of Bear Creek died Thursday, (09-17-09).
Funeral services were held Tuesday, (09-22-09) at 4 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church, with Rev. Thomas Simpson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Herring was the son of Ben David and Mary Ann Jones Herring. He was born in Lee County and a graduate of Sandhills Community College. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben David Herring.
Survivors include a daughter, Breanna Lea Herring of the home; mother, Mary Ann Jones Herring of the home; sisters, Mary Griffin of Sanford, Darlene Wilson of Goldston, Sharon McIntosh of Robbins, Pam Fields of Goldston; and grandmother, Pearl Jones of New Hill.
JIMMY LEE ANDREWS
Jimmy Lee Andrews of Wilmington, formerly of Siler City, died on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in Wilmington.
Jimmy was born in Greensboro. He was the son of Archie Howard and Louise Teague Gilliland Andrews. He was a past member of Col. John R. Lane Society Sons of Confederate Veterans and also served in the Vietnam War. Jimmy was a member of the Scottish Ross Clan and held office of the Deputy Commissioner for the State of NC.
Jimmy is survived by a daughter, Amanda “Hope” Foster of Erie, PA; a half- brother, Roy L. Gilliland of Asheboro; aunt, Betty Andrews Coker of Fairfax, SC; three grandsons and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, with Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Smith & Buckner Funeral Home of Siler City is assisting the Andrews family with local arrangements.
DANNY BROWER BUTLER
Danny Brower Butler, 59, of Pittsboro died Sunday, September 20, 2009.
He is survived by his son, Carl Butler of Pittsboro; two grandsons and two step-grandsons; his mother, Liselotte B. Smith of Pittsboro; a brother, Walter Butler of Pittsboro; three sisters, Anita B. Moose of Denver, NC, Inge B. Davis of Haw River, and Sylvia B. Brooks of Asheboro: and many nephews and nieces.
Danny served three years in the Army in Germany.
A memorial will be held at Emmaus Baptist Church on Silk Hope-Gum Springs Road on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 5 p.m.
WILLIE J. “SHAKER” BROOKS
GREENSBORO — Mr. Willie J. "Shaker" Brooks, 76, of Greensboro, traded his earthly life on Friday, August 28, 2009, for his eternal heavenly home.
Willie was born in Siler City, N.C., on January 19, 1933. He was the son of the late Julius Caesar and Lealer Marsh Brooks. He was an entrepreneur, a driver with United Cab Co. (#2 and #6), and the owner of Brooks Transportation, Inc.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius Caesar and Lealer Marsh Brooks, and sister, Kritha Brooks Payne.
Family members left to cherish his memories are his beloved and devoted wife of more than 50 years, Ola Holt Brooks; three sons, Tyrone Bennett (Marina) of Alameda County, California, Michael Anthony and Willie Eric "Ricky" (Fe-Nee); three daughters, Cynthia Brooks Wooten (Juan), Brenda Brooks Kellam and Ellie Brooks Baldwin (Clarence), all of Greensboro; one nephew, Larry Brooks (Cynthia) of Bear Creek; two nieces, Rena Brooks Cotton (Walter), also of Bear Creek, and Darlene Payne Jackson of Harriston, Va.; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren;a very special cousin, Tom Goins of Galax, Va., cousin and foster sister, Alberta Glover Johnson of Hampton, Va.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, at Trinity AME Zion. The family received friends from 1:30 until 2 p.m. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Hospice and Palliative care of Greensboro.
Services were entrusted to Hargett funeral service, Inc.
DAVID STONE
David Stone, 73, of Moncure, died Tuesday (09-08-09) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (09-11-09) at Haywood Independent Bible Church with Rev. Jim Brady officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Stone was a native of Wake County, the son of the late Walker Stone and Lillian Massey Stone. He retired as an electrician from UNC at Chapel Hill, and then worked with Smith Funeral Homes in Moncure and Broadway. He was a member of Haywood Independent Bible Church.
Survivors include a son, Scott D. Stone of Moncure; and brothers, Joe Stone of Wake Forrest and Clyde Stone of Raleigh.
JOHN DAVID CRUTCHFIELD, SR.
John David Crutchfield, Sr., 89, of Ramseur, died Thursday (09-10-09) at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A Celebration of Life was held Sunday (from 3 to 5 p.m. at Harvest House with Rev. Randy Kelley officiating.
Mr. Crutchfield was a native of Chatham County, a World Wat II veteran, and retired from G.E.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Green Crutchfield of the home; daughter, Linda Caudle Moser of Ramseur; son, John D. Crutchfield, Jr. of Ramseur; sister, peggy C. White of Siler City; brothers, Tom Crutchfield of Siler City, Alfred Crutchfield of Julian; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

JASON WALLACE “JJ” BLACK, JR.
Jason Wallace “JJ” Black, Jr., infant, of Sanford, died Monday, (09-07-09).
A memorial service was held at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Saturday (09-12-09) with Rev. Scott Yow officiating. Burial followed at Lee Memory Gardens.
Survivors include his parents, Jason and Cassie Ingram Black of Sanford; paternal grandparents, Wendy Black, BJ Baker, both of Sanford; maternal grandparents, Chick and Billie Ingram of West End.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to assist the family to Miller-Boles Funeral Home, 1150 Fire Tower Road, Sanford, NC 27330, in memory of Jason Wallace Black.
LOLA PHILLIPS MARSH
Lola Phillips Marsh, 94 of Goldston died Monday, (09-14-09) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, (09-17-09) at 4 p.m. at Goldston Baptist Church with Rev. David Hicks and Rev. Mitch Rogensky officiating. Burial will follow at the Goldston Cemetery.
Mrs. Marsh was born in Winston-Salem to the late Arthur Marion Cook and Nellie Casey Cook. She was the oldest member of Goldston Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Women’s Missionary Society. She was a former school teacher at Goldston High School, and a member of the Women’s Club of Goldston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Phillips.
Survivors include a son, Charles Larry Phillips of Pinnacle; daughters, Ann Phillips West, Jane Phillips Jones, both of Sanford; sister, Mildred Hemrick of Germanton; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
The family received friends on Wednesday, (09-16-09) from 6-8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford and at other times at the home of Ann West and Bill and Jane Jones.
