MANDY LOIS MORRIS MOSES

Mandy Lois Morris Moses, 96, of 752 Dewitt Smith Road, Pittsboro died July 31, 2009, at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2009, at Meroney United Methodist Church, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lois was born in Orange County to Kearney S. Morris and Lovie Glosson Morris on June 14, 1913.

She is survived by one son, Gary Morris Moses and wife, Eleanor of Pittsboro; two grandchildren, Angela Wilson and husband, Jeff, Denise Staley and husband, Eddie; four great-grandchildren, Erin and Caleb Stale, Jamie and Benjamin Wilson; and one sister, Gladys M. Cowen of Edmonds, Washington. Special care givers were Patti Seagroves, Shirley Rives and Shelby Spence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jarvis Milton Moses and two sisters, Spella M. Crawford and Lena M. Thompson.

Memorials may be made to Meroney United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Eleanor Moses, 604 Dewitt Smith Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Mrs. Moses was the oldest member of Meroney United Methodist church and had served as church treasurer and was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. She loved cooking, working in her vegetable and flower garden. Lois was a member of the Home Demonstration Club and loved quilting.
The family received friends Sunday, August 2, 2009, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. Other times, at her home.

JAMES DAVID “JD” MEARS

Enfield – Mr. James David “JD” Mears, age 87 died Friday, July 31, 2009. He was born and educated in Edgecombe County. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 where his patrol craft was the first United States vessel hit by enemy fire during the D Day invasion. Mr. Mears was a Purple Heart recipient. He also served in the Okinawa invasion. Mr. Mears was discharged from the Navy in 1945 as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his service to our country, he owned and operated Mears Jewelry in Enfield, North Carolina from 1952 to 1985. Mr. Mears was an active member of the Enfield Baptist Church serving as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He had been active with the Masons since 1954 and the Enfield Lions Club. Mr. Mears served on the Enfield Town Board for twelve years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Daughtridge and Joseph Mears; his wife of fifty years, Zenobia “Zee” Wheeless Mears; daughter, Patricia Grubb; brother, Robert L. Mears; and sister, Mary Jo Mears Pennington.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Draper Mears of Tarboro, NC; daughter, Brenda Mears Craig and her husband Mike of Charlotte, NC; stepdaughter, Becky Lane and her husband Jimmy of Siler City, NC; stepson, Gary Mohorn and his wife Llewellyn of Emerald Isle, NC; sisters, Jean Joyner of Rocky Mount, NC, Faye Southerland and her husband Bob of Raleigh, NC; brother, Dan Mears and his wife Susan of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Kelli Craig Snyder and her husband Jeff, Anna Craig Gatlin and her husband John, Alison Dunn and her husband Don; step grandchildren, Allison Malpass and her husband Bert, Jake Lane and his wife Kristen, Kim Collins; three great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, August 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Enfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. The interment followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC with Masonic Rites.

The family received friends Monday at the Enfield Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 10 a.m. to the time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Enfield Baptist Church, 200 West Burnette Avenue, Enfield, NC 27823.

Sykes funeral service of Scotland Neck handled the arrangements.

DORIS PARSON

Doris Parson, 76, of Sanford died Saturday (07-04-09) in the hospital.

Mrs. Parson was buried at Grace Chapel Cemetery in Sanford.

Survivors include daughters, Paula Martin, Sandra Roseman, Pat Parson; and four grandchildren.

GRADY FIELDS

Grady Fields, 83, of Siler City died Wednesday, (07-22-09) at Coventry House of Siler City.

Services were held Friday, (07-24-09) at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church with Pastor, Bobby Shutt officiating. Burial followed in Oakley Baptist Church Cemetery, Siler City, with military rites.

Mr. Fields was the son of John William and Lora Elma Burke Fields. He was a native of Chatham County, an Army veteran of WW II, and attended Faith Baptist Church. He retired after 35 years with the Coca Cola Bottling Co. After that, he worked for Townsends, Inc. of Siler City and Car Quest of Asheboro. Mr. Fields was preceded in death by a son, Tony W. Fields.

Survivors include his wife, Mozelle Gilliland Fields; son, Steve Fields of Siler City; sisters, Allene F. Brown of Bear Creek, Maxine F. Braswell of Liberty, Elma Lee Hilliard of Greensboro, and Marjorie Hilliard of Greensboro; and one grandson.

Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, P O Box 488, Siler City, NC 27344

DAVID EVAN BOWMAN

Mr. David Evan Bowman, 56, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, (07-22-09) at WakeMed in Cary.

A memorial service was conducted by Rev. Bob Boyd at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, Griffin Chapel.

Born in Los Angeles, CA, he was the son of Paul Lee Bowman and Frances Ann Watts Bowman, and was a computer programmer with UNC-Chapel Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Christina S. Bowman; son, Aaron David Bowman of Greensboro; brothers, James Bowman, of St. Joseph, MI, Jeffrey Bowman of Grand Rapids, MI; sisters, Cynthia B. Foley, of South Bend, IN, and Sheila Conklin of New Buffalo, MI.

BILLY D. POE, SR.

Billy D. Poe, Sr., 79, of Siler City, died Thursday (07-23-09) at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday (07-27-09) at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Ellison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Poe was the son of Coen Alfred and Cora Edwards Poe. He was a native of Chatham County, a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, and a self-employed cabinet maker.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Thomas Poe; sons, Larry Poe, Sr. Billy Poe, Jr., both of Siler City, James Poe of Bear Creek; sister: Pauline P. Duncan of Bear Creek; seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, 120 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

ROBERT FLOYD MAULDIN

Robert Floyd Mauldin, 91 of Siler City died Thursday (07-23-09) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, (07-27-09) at Gees Grove AME Zion Church with Rev. Allen Moore officiating.

Mr. Mauldin was a native of Chatham County, a member of Gees Grove AME Zion Church and retired from Siler City Mills. He was a member of the World Lodge 711 and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #521.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Mauldin of Raleigh; daughter, Rena Davis of Greensboro; and two grandsons.

ANNIE JEAN DeGRAFFENREID

Annie Jean DeGraffenreid, 76, of Siler City, died Sunday (07-26-09) at the Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (07-29-09) at Corinth AME Zion Church with Rev. Genelle Wilkerson officiating.

Ms. DeGraffenreid was a native of Chatham County and a former employee of Chatham Trades.

There are no immediate survivors

ADELL PETTY BROOKS

Adell Petty Brooks, 86, of 408 Eden Hills Road, Siler City died Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Coventry House of Siler City, Siler City.

Mrs. Brooks was born February 6, 1923, the daughter of Lonnie and Jessie Perry Petty. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and a retired waitress and cook. She was known for cooking, especially cakes and her crocheting. Adell was preceded in death by her husbands, Cleatus Johnson and Russell Brooks.

She is survived by one son, Larry K. Johnson and wife, Carol of St. Cloud, FL; two sisters, Elizabeth Farrell of Pittsboro, Patricia Andrews of Siler City; grandchildren, Debbie Johnson of Siler City, Michael Johnson of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Chase, Jesse and Lee Johnson; step-son, James Brooks of Siler City; step-daughter, Frances Langley of Staley: step- grandsons, Russell Brooks of Siler City, Chad Langley of Staley; step-granddaughter, Teresa Brooks of Siler City; four step-great-grandchildren and "special family", Dirk and Robin James.

The family received friends Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 3631 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Wellborn officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

ANNIE RUTH CLARK RACHEL

Mrs. Annie Ruth Clark Rachel, 73, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Oakley Baptist Church in Siler City with the Rev. Brian Sandifer officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Rachel was born January 10, 1936 in Henry County, Virginia to the late Moyer Clark and Lillie Cassady Clark. She was employed by A. J. Schneierson and Sons for 30 years. She retired in 2001 from Glen-dale Hosiery and spent her last years sewing, cooking and caring for family, friends and neighbors.

Mrs. Rachel is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James Russell Rachel.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Roger White, Debbie and Rick Fields, Donna and Dennis Andrews, all of Siler City; grandchildren, Jamie White, Adam Fields, Allison Andrews, Ashley Andrews; sisters, Virginia Harrison, Lucille Phillips, Carlene Blake; brother Cecil Clark; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Don Ludington.

Annie Ruth was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Moses Cone Hospital and at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care and kindness.

The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m.Saturday, July 25 at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City, other times at the home of Rick and Debbie Fields, 324 South Dogwood Avenue, Siler City.
Memorials may be made to the Oakley Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2300 Siler City-Glendon Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

JOEL GOODWIN

Joel Dallas Goodwin went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, July 22, 2009.

He was born on March 26, 1959 and was the son of Jack and Mary Goodwin.

Joel leaves on this side of Heaven, his wife Vivian; daughter, Megan Hope; father, Jack Goodwin; step-mother, Pauline Rogers; brother, Jack Brian Goodwin; sister, Sheryl Dupont, brother-in-law Walter Dupont; uncle, Carlton Goodwin of Virginia Beach, VA; aunt, Helen Renn of Tyler, TX; and his beloved feline, Chipmunk.

Mr. Goodwin was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Overman Goodwin and grandparents, Newton Jackson Goodwin and Jeanette Lydia Jenks Goodwin.

A private memorial service was held Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Olive Chapel Baptist Church.
