MARY FRANCES DORSETT

Mary Frances Dorsett, 89, of 900 West Dolphin Street, Siler City died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Dorsett was born September 15, 1919, the daughter of Jesse and Sue Lambert Fox.

Mrs. Dorsett was a Chatham County native, retired from Kellwood Company where she was an inspector. Mary Frances was preceded in death by her husband, V. M. Dorsett, Jr.; parents, Jesse S. and Sue Lambert Fox; and a sister, Joyce Vestal.

She is survived by daughter and granddaughter, Mary Vett and Kelle Misenheimer; several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service was held with the Rev. Larry Soblotne officiating.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

MAE WILKIE GAINES

Mae Wilkie Gaines, 90, of 2671 Roberts Chapel Road, Goldston died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Mrs. Gaines was born March 10, 1919, the daughter of Archie W. and Ethel Hilliard Wilkie. Mrs. Gaines was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Lynn Gaines; parents, Archie and Ethel Hillard Wilkie; brothers, Frank, Robert and Rupert Wilkie.

She is survived by one daughter, Charlotte G. Scott of Goldston; five sisters, Emma W. Brewer of Siler City, Elma W. Hatch of Durham, Frona W. Eads of Siler City, Mollie W. Woody of Goldston, Linda W. Wicker of Goldston.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston.

The funeral will be Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston, NC 27252.

MARY JANE BOYLES THOMPSON

Mrs. Mary Jane Boyles Thompson, 86, formerly of Seagrove, died Thursday, 06-25-09, at Saint Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines.

funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, 06-28-09 at Joyce-Brady Chapel with Rev. Don Daniels officiating. Burial followed in Stony Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Mt. Gilead.

Mrs. Thompson, born in Bluefield, West Virginia, was the widow of Barney B. Thompson, and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Carbonton.

Survivors include daughters, Peggy Riddle of Siler City, Pat Sipe of Goldston, Margaret Williams of Seagrove, Blanche Cline of Goldston; sons, Harvey Thompson of Greer, SC, Burnice Thompson of Thomasville, Bill Thompson of Atlanta, GA; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

RUTHIE VEASEY CARPENTER

Mrs. Ruthie Veasey Carpenter, 94, formerly of Pittsboro, died Sunday (06-28-09) at Chapel Hill Health & Rehab.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, (07-01-09) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, with Rev. Dan Robinson presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Carpenter was born in Granville County, the daughter of Oren Judson Veasey and Susie Anna Weaver Veasey. She was retired from UNC where she worked as a nursing assistant at the campus infirmary. She was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School as well as Bible School, and was a member and secretary of the Silver Angels Sunday School class.

Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by her first husband, Eddie Matthew Carpenter; her second husband, Harvey Newton Carpenter; two sons, Billy Wes Carpenter and Colen Kenneth Carpenter; a granddaughter, Billie Lane Hurt; and two step-children, Marie Pilkington and Newton Carpenter.

Survivors include daughters, Jean Tripp, Gayle Green, both of Pittsboro, Bonnie Powell of Fuquay-Varina, Patricia Taylor of Cary; step-daughters, Mona Firmage of Sanford, Jane Thomas of Oklahoma; step-son, Carey Carpenter of Garner; brother, Grady Veasey of Durham; sisters, Pearl Roberts of Bahama, Sue Stewart of Durham; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of step-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 1785 Mt. Gilead Church Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

NORMAN CRAIG LISK, SR.

Norman Craig Lisk, Sr., 93, of Siler City died Sunday, (06-28-09) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, (07-01-09) at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park with military rites by the Randolph Honor Guard.

Mr. Lisk was born in Richfield, the son of Walter Lee and Mary Jane Parker Lisk. He was a native of Rowan County, a graduate of Pfeifer College and retired administrator of Chatham Hospital. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City where he served as a Trustee and on the Administrative Board and the property committee. He was also a veteran of WWII in the Army Air Corp.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Karriker Lisk; daughters, Jane Lisk Andrews of Siler City, Martha Lisk of Pittsboro; son, Norman Craig Lisk, Jr. of Blowing Rock; one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P O Box 212, Siler City, NC 27344; Rotary Club of Siler City, on behalf of the support of Chatham Hospital, Attention: Charles Johnson, P. O. Box 463, Siler City, NC 27344; or Chatham County Council on Aging, 112 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

CLIFFORD (PETE) BARTH

Clifford (Pete) Barth, 84, of Siler City, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham.

The funeral was held Sunday, June, 28, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Wellborn officiating.

He was a member of Mt. Vernon Methodist Church of Silk Hope, and the Siler City Masonic Lodge 403. A Chatham County native, Mr. Barth was born March 18, 1925 in Wyndotte County, Ohio. He was the son of the late Walter Benjamin Barth and Geneva Ellen Miller and the step-son of Harvey Miller, Sr. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Dwight David Barth, Byron Barth and step-brother, Harvey Miller, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Georgia Ruth Barth; daughters, Pamelia Jacobs and husband, Gordon Jacobs of Asheville, Patsy Bynum and husband, Charlie Bynum of Douglasville, GA, Cindy Coffey and husband, Dr. James Coffey of Shallotte. He was Pawpaw Pete to four wonderful grandchildren, Ashli Nance, Amy Bocholis, Beth Bowen all of Charlotte, Jason Edwards of Douglasville, GA; and six great-grandchildren, Trent Dixon, Taylor Nance, Mackenzie, Madison, Morgan Bocholis and Olivia Bowen. He is also survived by a brother, Vernon Barth and wife, Virginia, numerous sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nephews and nieces.

He was awarded an honorable discharge from the United States Navy on January 10, 1946 after having served aboard an LST as a machinist in both the Atlantic and Pacific arenas, including D-Day in Normandy, France and various victorious battles in the Pacific.

He was a retired poultry farmer and a driver for Selig Manufacturing Company.

Special thanks to the Siler City Lions Club and the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at Veterans Memorial Hospital of Durham, especially Dr. Matthew McKinney, Dr. Michael Buebel and also, Dr. Jim Davis of Chatham Hospital.

The family received friends Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Siler City Lions Club, 383 Eden Hills Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

ARTHUR FREEMAN PAGE

Arthur Freeman Page, age 86, of 124 Clearpoint Place, Pittsboro died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Page was born on April 23, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia and was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Herring Page in 1986.

Mr. Page was a graduate of Boy's High School of Atlanta, Georgia, class of 1942. He remained active in the Alumni Association until his death. He was honored by the local Boy Scout's Council as an Eagle Scout. Mr. Page served in the Army Air Force and served two years on Guam during World War II. He retired as President of N. A. Williams Company of Atlanta, Georgia in 1987.

His retirement was spent fulfilling his dreams of becoming a cowboy and could often be found moving cattle in Montana. Mr. Page roamed this continent in pursuit of big game and formed close friendships with fellow trappers in Pittsboro and surrounding communities. He was actively involved with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

He is survived by his five children, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Throughout his life, he interacted with many children, now adults, who loved him as a father/grandfather. The friendships he built over his years were a source of great joy to him and he found great delight in story-telling and practical jokes.

The funeral service was held Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Pleasant Hill Church Road, Pittsboro. A memorial graveside service was held on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery at 5 p.m.. The arrangements will be assisted through Crumpler & Honeycutt in Clinton, North Carolina.

Memorials can be made in his name to the Therapeutic Riding Program of Pittsboro, NC; Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, PO Box 785, Pittsboro, NC 27312; Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 11341 N. Highway 421, Clinton, NC; or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

The family received friends following the memorial service on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the church.

The family would like to thank Community Hospice of Siler City for their generous support and loving kindness throughout his short illness.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.

RICHARD WILSON, JR.

Richard Wilson, Jr., native of Chatham County, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 in Washington, D.C.

Arrangements are incomplete at C.E. Willie Funeral and Cremation Services in Pittsboro.

CATHERINE WARD WILLIAMS

Catherine Ward Williams, 90, of Siler City died Friday, June 19, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Williams was born December 10, 1918, the daughter of Gustavus Graham and Nannie Florence Burnett Ward. She was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Pittsboro High School, Appalachian State Teacher's College, which is now Appalachian State University. Mrs. Williams retired in 1974 from Paul Braxton Elementary School and also taught at Pittsboro and Bonlee Elementary. She was a charter member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International sorority for women educators. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City since 1947 where she served on various committees.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joe C. (JC) Williams of the home; one son, Joe Williams and wife, Eileen of Siler City; granddaughter, Kara Williams of Atlanta, GA; several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Sunday, June 21, 2009 from 1-2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Sykes officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

THE REV. WEBSTER L. SIMONS, JR.

The Reverend Webster Little Simons, Jr., 83, of 207 W. Queen Street, Edenton, NC died Sunday, June 21, 2009 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC.

Born in Malden, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Col. Webster L., Sr. and Dorothy Swett Simons. Educated in the public schools of Washington, DC, he was a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, CT where he was a member of Delta Phi, and received his Master of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. Serving parishes in Richmond, Scottsville, and Bon Air, VA, he later served as Rector of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Wilmington, NC. After retiring as the Archdeacon of the Diocese of East Carolina, he served as Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Garden City, KS and upon returning to Edenton served as a supply priest in Washington and Tyrrell Counties. A member of Christ Episcopal Church in Creswell, he served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II.

Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Ballard Simons and husband Mark Platts of Lancaster, PA, Joanna Simons Tysor and husband Mike of Bear Creek, NC, Margaret Simons Linkous and husband Andy of Leland, NC; a son, Christopher Michael Gordon Simons of Chiang Mai, Thailand; two sisters, Adah Stalnaker of North Haven, CT, Dorothy Gibson of Alexandria, VA; a brother, The Rev. Harrison Simons of Oxford, NC; nine grandchildren, Timothy Webster Platts, Noah Platts, Daniel Tysor, Rebecca Tysor, Faith Tysor, Katie Linkous, Jennifer Linkous, Steven Linkous and Charlotte Ann Simons.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, Creswell, and will be conducted by The Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel, 3rd, The Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina. Burial will follow in St. David’s Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the residence. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Thompson Children’s Home, P.O. Box 25129, Charlotte, NC 28229.

RALPH E. “GENE” CHESTER, SR.
N.C. STATE HIGHWAY PATROL, RETIRED

Ralph Eugene “Gene” Chester, Sr., age 82, of 132 Cats Drive, Broadway, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He was born on March 15, 1927 in Chatham County, son the the late Ralph Andrew Chester and Clara Seagroves Chester. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Annie Donna Chester McKay, Frances Chester Whitaker and brother Wayne Seagroves Chester. He served in the Merchant Marines Corp. during World War II. He graduated from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Academy and was sworn in as a State Trooper in 1948. He retired in 1983 with 35 years of service to the State of North Carolina. He also was an employee of the Sanford Golf Course for 20 years, was formerly associated with Miller Boles Funeral Home and at the time of his death, was associated with the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway as a funeral assistant. He was an elder of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Men of the Church. He was a 50-year member of the Buffalo Masonic Lodge No. 172 AF& AM, a 32° Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Sanford Shrine Club and Amran Shrine Temple in Raleigh.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Buffalo Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Paul Shields and Rev. Dr. Vernon C. Tyson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Kirkman Chester of the home; daughters, Karen Chester of Raleigh, Holly Chester Baker of Sanford, Dee Anne Chester Beal of Sanford; son, R.E. “Chet” Chester, Jr. and wife Wanda of Sanford; sister, Hurdalene Chester Ellis of Pittsboro; grandchildren, Kirk Baker of Orlando, FL, Danielle Chester of Sanford, Brittany Chester of Sanford, Drew Cox of Wilmington, and Preston Cox of Sanford.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening at the Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Sanford and other times at the home of Dee Anne Chester Beal, 518 Franklin Drive, Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 1333 Carthage Street, Sanford, NC 27330; or to the Shriners Children’s Hospitals, Attn: Donor Relations, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Arrangements were by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
