MILDRED KISER GARNER

Mildred Kiser Garner, 87, of Seagrove, died Sunday (07-12-09) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, (07-15-09) at 11 a.m. at Riverside Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Bouldin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Garner was a Randolph County native, a retired merchant, and member of Riverside Baptist Church. She was preceded in beath by her husband of Rev. Amos Garner.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam Green of Seagrove; son, Gerald Garner of Seagrove; sister, Mrs. Callie K. Needham of Seagrove; brother, James C. Kiser of Seagrove; and three grandchildren.

DR. LELAND BRICE HALL

Dr. Leland Brice Hall, 86, of Sanford died Thursday (07-09-09) at his home.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday (07-12-09) at Buffalo Cemetery with Rev. Steve Botha officiating, and military honors.

Dr. Hall was born in Blackstock, SC to the late James L. and Mary Woodward Hall. He was a veteran in the US Army Corp, serving as a Captain, B-24 Pilot with bombing missions over western and eastern Europe. He was awarded the air medal with 3 oak leaf clusters and many other awards. After that, he attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon where he received his Doctoring Degree in Optometry. He started his practice in Siler City, and later settled in Sanford, where he retired. He was founding member of Mid-South Bank (now RBC).

Survivors include sons, Stuart A. Hall of Greensboro, John C Hall of Wake Forest; brother, William W. Hall of Wilmington; three grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 809 Wicker St., Sanford, NC 27330.

GARRY DENNIS OSBURN

Gary Dennis Osburn, 66, of Pittsboro, died Monday (07-13-09) at his home.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m Thursday, (07-16-09) at Meroney United Methodist Church. Burial, with military rites, will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Osburn was a native of Akron, Ohio.

Friends visited with the family from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, Griffin Chapel.

HERBERT HART

Herbert Hart, 84, Siler City died Wednesday, (07-01-09) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

Mr. Hart was the son of Willie Hart, a native of Chatham County and self-employed logger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Hart.

He is survived by daughters, Hilda Hart Berry of Sanford, JoAnne Hart Woods of Keystone, FL; sons, Herman Hart of Bear Creek, George Hart of Goldston, Raymond Earl Hart of Siler City; eleven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

LARRY JOHNSON

Mr. Larry Johnson, 52 of Siler City died Thursday (07-09-09) at V.A. Hospital in Durham.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (07-17-09) at C.E. Willie Funeral Chapel in Sanford, with Rev. Sharon Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Sandhills VA Cemetery in Spring Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce C. Johnson; sons, Leon Johnson of Fayetteville, Coyrick Cheek of Gibsonville, Christopher Cheek of Siler City, Timothy Johnson of Detroit, MI; daughter, Camry Sanchez of Siler City; and two grandchildren.

SARAH LEONARD WHITE

Sarah Leonard White, 85, of 331 Jim Gilliland Road, Siler City died Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. White was born November 19, 1923, the daughter of Oscar Tate and Ora Elizabeth Shaw Leonard. She was a native of Randolph County, retired from A J Schneierson & Sons and a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church. Sarah enjoyed crocheting. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Pete White, an infant son, and a granddaughter, Julie White.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry Ray White and wife, Barbara of Bear Creek, John L. White and wife, Ann of Goldston, Randy White of Siler City; one brother, Jesse Leonard of Asheboro; five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

The family received friends Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC and other times at the home of Jerry White, 1008 Joe Brown Road, Bear Creek. The graveside service was held Friday, July 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Don Daniel officiating.

BRENDA HOLT OLDHAM

Brenda Holt Oldham, devoted wife and cherished mother, passed away July 12, 2009 after a brief but brave battle with Leukemia.

Brenda was born on July 16, 1948 in Siler City, NC to Bryce and Dorothy Holt.

Brenda is survived by her husband, Larry and her son, Dennis of the home; her father, Bryce Holt of Siler City; two brothers, Mike Holt (wife Gwen) and Bobby Holt, both of Siler City; two brothers-in-law, Byron Oldham (wife Nancy) of Siler City and Russell Oldham of Cochise, AZ. Brenda was also deeply loved by her special nieces and nephews: Beverly Pilkey (husband Kerry) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Todd Holt of Blacksburg, VA, Scarlett Liles and Mary Clayton Overman of Siler City, Steve Oldham of Macon, GA, Ben Oldham of Houston, TX, Pam Oldham of Stokesdale, NC, Lee Oldham, Angela Garcia, Jimmy Oldham, Barbara Oldham and Bella Reeves of Tucson, AZ. She will also be greatly missed by her grandniece Jordan, her grandnephew Bryce; and her best friend Gail.

Those who knew and loved her will remember her as a wonderful friend and an amazing cook. Brenda was the receptionist at LaBauer Health Care at Stoney Creek for the past ten years. She was a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church in Siler City and attended Lighthouse Baptist Church on Bethel Church Road in McLeansville.

Visitation was held Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home and the funeral was held Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Rives Chapel Baptist Church in Siler City.

THOMAS ALTON DOWD, JR.

Thomas Alton Dowd, Jr. of Siler City went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, July 13, 2009.

Mr. Dowd was born November 13, 1922, the son of Thomas A. and Lillie E. Burke Dowd, Sr. He was a native of Chatham County, the owner-operator of Dowd's Machine Shop and an Army veteran of WW II. Thomas was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class and had served as a deacon. He was a member of Gideon International. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and five sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Brooks Dowd; one son, Steve Dowd and wife, Exie of Pittsboro; daughters, Marion D. Alderman and husband, Steve of Winston-Salem, Rhonda D. Millar and husband, William of Newport News, VA; two brothers, Graham C. Dowd, Jim Dowd, both of Siler City; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one step-grandson.

The family received friends Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral will be Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 120 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City with Rev. Eddie Ellison and Rev. Bob Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

YVONNE MOODY

Yvonne Moody, 69, of Sanford died Friday (07-03-09) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Graveside services were held Wednesday (07-08-09) at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dave Thomas officiating.

Mrs. Moody was the daughter of the late Herbert Lee and Mary Elizabeth Layne Haymore. She was a native of Lee County and was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church. A retired waitress, she had worked at the Wilco Service Station in Siler City. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Eugene Moody.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Key of Sanford; sons, Steven Cicogna, Paul Cicogna, both of Sanford; step-daughter, Donna M. McKay of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Betty Salmon of Tallahassee, FL, Alma Clark of Jonesboro, AR, Linda Norris of Alabama; brothers, Carl Haymore, Billy Haymore, Larry Haymore, all of Sanford; ten grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

MABEL M. BRAY

Mabel Mae Moore Bray, 91, formerly of Coleridge, died Friday (07-03-09) at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (07-07-09) at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Ramseur with Dr. Al Martin officiating. Burial followed at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Bray was a native of Liberty, and the daughter of Ernest and Anna Mary Moore. She graduated from Liberty High School and Appalachian State Teaching College. She taught school in Randolph County for 34 years. She was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church, where she taught the Adult Ladies Class.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Wlton Bray, and brother, Arnold Moore.

Survivors, Ann M. Hinshaw, of Greensboro; brothers, Joe Moore of Ramseur, and Tom Moore of Liberty.

JULIAN BARBER HAMER, SR.

Julian Barber Hamer, Sr., 86, of Siler City died Tuesday, (06-30-09) at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mr. Hamer was the son of John and Alma Barber Hamer. He was a native of Chatham County and retired from Hennis Motor Freight. Julian was preceded in death by his wife, Phoebe Wicker Hamer. He was an Army veteran of WW II where he served at New Guinea, Phillipines, in the Central Pacific and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor of December 7, 1941.
He is survived by three sons, Julian B. "Jay" Hamer, Jr. of Supply, John Hamer of Snow Camp, Richard Hamer of Raleigh; three daughters, Sharon H. Smith of Siler City, Alma H. Smithey of Burlington, Ann H. Reed of Elon; ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

The graveside service was held Friday, July 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Goldston Cemetery with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating.

DONALD PATRICK LOVELL

Donald Patrick Lovell, 61, of Gulf died Saturday, (07-04-09) at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital, Dunn.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, (07-08-09) at 2 p.m. at Gulf Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bruce Benton officiating. Inurnment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends immediately following the service at the church.

Mr. Lovell was the son of George and Mary Duford Lovell. A native of Shoreham, Vermont and a carpenter, he was a member and Elder of Gulf Presbyterian Church where he served on the maintenance committee. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, George Lovell, Jr., and sister, Marjorie Keenan.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Phillips Lovell; sister, Ardith Morris of Charleston, SC; brothers, Arthur Lovell of Troy, SC, Bernard Lovell of Saluda, SC, Michael Lovell of Willington, David Bonaparte and Francis Bonaparte, both of Raynham, MA.

Memorials may be made to Gulf Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 206, Gulf, NC 27256

STEPHEN PATRICK RUSSELL

Stephen Patrick Russell, 23, a rising senior at NC State University drowned in Jordan Lake on Saturday, (07-04-09).

A memorial service was held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, (07-08-09) in the White Garden of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State.

In lieu of flowers, direct memorial contributions to the NCSU Ice Hockey Team (In memory of Stephen Russell), % Kevin Thomas, 3511 Brentwood Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service, Griffin Chapel, Pittsboro.
