VELNA MOORE PENDERGRAPH
Mrs Velna Moore Pendergraph, 82, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday (05-26-09) in her home.
Graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, (05-29-09) at Gum Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Pendergraph was a native of Chatham County and the daughter of Ed and Fannie Johnson Moore. She was retired from Chatham Mills, and was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest Pendergraph of the home; son, Lee Pendergraph of Moncure; daughter Deborah Fuller of Pittsboro; brother, Wilbur Moore of Pittsboro; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Earline Veasey; grandson, Craig Veasey; and brother, Bobby Moore.
HAZEL WIMBERLY BROWN
Mrs. Hazel Wimberly Brown, 85, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (05-27-09) at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (05-30-09) at Chatham Memorial Park cemetery, with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating.
Mrs. Brown was a Chatham County native, and the daughter of Charles Green Wimberly and Maude Hearn Wimberly. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Brown, sons, Larry K. Brown and Cecil Charles Brown.
Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Picket of Pittsboro; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother, Jack L. Wimberly of Florence, SC; and sister, Delana W. Wicker of Greensboro.

BARBARA MORRISON FIELDS
Barbara Morrison Fields, 68, of Bear Creek, NC died Friday (05-29-09) at Pinelake Health and Rehab. Center in Carthage.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday (06-02-09) at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, with Rev. Todd Brown, Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Fields was a native of Chatham County, a member of Sandy Branch Church and ran a poultry farm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert "Kidd" and Sarah Morrison, her husband, Roland Mack Fields, her son, Robert Mack Fields and a sister, Emma Jean Caviness.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan F. Garner of Carthage; sisters, Pearl Canterbury of Bear Creek, Brenda Hart of Gulf; brothers: Leon Morrison of Sanford, Donnie Morrison of Gulf; and one grandson.

COLONEL MARTIN RAY “MARTY” RIDGE
Colonel Martin Ray "Marty" Ridge, 59, of Rural Hall died Sunday (05-24-09) at Forsyth Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Thursday (05-28-09) at Rural Hall Moravian Church with Rev. Dr. Steve Craver and Rev. Jim New-some officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Rural Hall Memorial Park.
Colonel Ridge was born in Forsyth County, the son of the late Harriet Crouch Ridge and Cone Sherman Ridge Jr. He joined the Army Reserves and served in the military for 39 years. He was a member of Rural Hall Moravian Church, King American Legion Post #290 and Kernersville V.F.W. Post # 5352.
Surviving is his wife Jane Kiger Ridge of the home; children, Austin Ray Ridge of Rural Hall, Adam Holloway Ridge of Raleigh, and Audrey Ridge Fant of King; sisters Sharon Paschal of Siler City, Bain Winkler of Boone; and one granddaughter.

HILDA F. BRAY
Hilda Fields Bray, 84, of Bear Creek, died Sunday (05-31-09) at her home.
Memorial services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday (06-02-09) at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Scott Walker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bray was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and retired farmer. She was a member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Philathea Sunday School class, Young at Hearts Senior Adults, Rosa Ellis Mission Circle and the Church Visitation and Outreach Team.
Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis H. Bray, father, W. Ashley Fields, stepfather M.D. Andrews, mother, Clevie Grubbs Andrews, and sister, Shirley A. Stephenson.
Survivors include daughter, Kaye Jones, son, Craig Bray, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, all of Bear Creek.

JAMES SARTIN
Mr. James Sartin, 65, of Siler City, died Sunday (05-31-09) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation Center.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday (06-05-09) at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus of Apostolic Faith with Pastor Mike Crosby officiating.
Mr. Sartin was the son of Author William and Daisy Calhoun Sartin. He was preceded in death by brother, Howard Sartin and a sister, Gladys McClain.
He is survived by children, Penny Morris, Amanda Sartin, Joanie Buzzard and Jason Sartin; brother, Norman Sartin; and sisters, Vallie Gibson, Dorothy Mitchell, and Pauline Paperina.

LESLIE ANN FRAZIER
Leslie Ann Frazier, 54, of Chapel Hill died Thursday (05-28-09) at her home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Hillcrest Church of Christ Auditorium. Burial followed in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Frazier was a native of Austin, Texas and the daughter of Bill and Jerry Wright. She graduated from Abilene Christian High School, attended Abilene Christian University, and was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ. She received her nursing license from Alamance Community College and worked for UNC Home Health Agency as a senior nurse. She was preceded in death by Stephen Curtis Merritt, her first husband.
Survivors include husband, Bobby Joe Frazier; two sons, 1st Lt. Sean Merritt serving in the US Navy of Oak Harbor, Washington, Curtis Merritt of Keller, Texas; parents Bill and Jerry Wright of Abilene; brothers, Alan Wright of Abilene; Gary Wright of Joshua, Texas; Chad Wright of Seagraves, Texas; and two grandchildren.
HAZEL MARIE ROBERTS WATTS
Hazel Marie Roberts Watts, 71, of Roxboro, died Thursday (05-28-09).
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (05-30-09) at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, near Alton, Va. with Rev. George Gorman and Rev. Greg Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Watts was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Watts, parents, Ad and Beulah Neighbors Roberts, and brother, Bill Roberts.
Survivors include daughters, Vanessa Hammock, Barbara W. Lacks; son, Kevin Watts; sisters, Nancy Whitaker of Siler City, Betty Lou Coates; brothers, Reggie Roberts, Roy Roberts; and five grandchildren.
EUGENE HARRY THOMAS
Mr. Eugene Harry Thomas, 89, of Pittsboro died Friday (05-29-09) at The Laurels of Chatham.
Following cremation, Mr. Thomas will be interred in Lakewood Park Cemetery in St. Louis. A memorial service will be held at a date still to be determined.
Mr. Thomas was a native of Sedalia, MO, the son of Lester and Arlene Pearl Mettler Thomas. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, and served in the Pacific with the US Army during World War II. He worked as an accountant in the pharmaceutical industry, and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, and a daughter.
Surviving is his wife, Vera Fluetsch Thomas; daughter Janet Tigue of Baltimore, MD; son Mark Thomas of Wake Forest; brother, Hugh Thomas of St Louis, MO; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
HOY JAMES MILLER, SR.
Hoy James Miller, Sr., 91, of Bear Creek died Sunday (05-31-09) at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living Center in Pittsboro.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (06-04-09) at Gees Grove AME Zion Church with Rev. Allen Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Miller was a native of Chatham County, a retired brick mason and farmer. He was a member of Gees Grove AME Zion Church where he had served as superintendent of the Sunday school, class leader, member of the usher board, the male chorus and the senior choir.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie L. Miller of the home; daughter, Barbara Marsh of Bear Creek, sons, George E. Miller of Durham, Rev. Hoy Miller, Jr. of Owings Mills, Md; sister, Veatrice M. Foxx of Bear Creek; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The family received visitors Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at Gees Grove AME Zion Church.
MARGIE WILLIAMS POOLE
Margie Williams Poole, 82, of Sanford died Monday, (06-01-09) at Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.
The funeral will be Friday, (06-05-09) at 2:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, with Chaplain, Joel Cameron and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilliard Family Cemetery in Goldston.
Mrs. Poole was the daughter of Luther J. and Mannie Hilliard Williams. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and a retired cafeteria worker at Lee Sr. High School.
Survivors include sons, Arthur Milton Poole, Jr. of Sanford, Robert Lynn Gaines of Greensboro; daughters, Carol P. Nichols of Raleigh, Fay P. Mitchell of Fuquay-Varina; sister, Roxie Morris of Goldston; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday (06-05-09) from 1:00 - 2:15 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Roxie Morris, 1716 Delphus Stinson Road, Goldston.
ELAINE RUSS DOBY
Elaine Russ Doby, 60, of Siler City died Thursday, (05-21-09) at her residence.
Graveside services were held Saturday, (05-23-09) at 11 a.m. at New Home Church of Christ in Dobson, with Rev. Tim Smith officiating.
Mrs. Doby was the daughter of Mildred W. Russ and the late Jesse E. Russ. She was a native of Columbus County, of the Baptist faith and was employed by the NC Employment Security Commission as manager of the Siler City office. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Allen Doby in addition to her father.
She is survived by her mother, Mildred W. Russ of Tabor City; sister, Evelyn Buffkin of South Port; and brother, Eldon Russ of Greenville, SC.
