PAUL THOMAS CURRIE, JR.

Hinesville, GA - Paul Thomas Currie, Jr., son of Jo-Ann D. Foxx and the late Paul Thomas Currie Sr., step son of Ernest L. Foxx, departed this life April 21, 2009. He was born July 26, 1964 in Chapel Hill, NC. He was a construction worker by trade and he loved playing basketball. He also liked boxing and loved to travel.Paul had many friends and an outgoing personality.

Survivors include his mother, JoAnn D. Foxx; step-father, Ernest L. Foxx, of Hinesville, GA; sisters, Sharity Petit of Washington, DC, LaDona Currie Andrews of Midway, GA, Tammie Currie of Hinesville, GA, Camille Hood of Columbus, GA; nieces, Brittaney Leight Foxx of Hinesville, GA, Jessica Gibson, Gabrielle Hood, Felicia Hood, all of Columbus, GA, Austin Andrews, Victoria Currie of Midway, GA; nephew, Hunter Petit of Washington, DC; great-nephew, Ja’Keith Gibson of Columbus, GA; great uncle, Prince Albert Foxx of Siler City, NC; Ella Alston and family of Goldston, NC; and Nancy Rogers and family of Siler City, NC.

The family received friends and family on Friday, April 24, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Hinesville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home with Chaplin Stovall Hyany, SCC officiating. Burial followed in the Oglethorpe Memorial Park Cemetery in Hinesville.

Pallbearers were Marcus Hood, Danual Alston, Bradley Dark, Angel Rivera, Earl Hubbard, and Robbie Foxx.

Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Hinesville, GA was in charge of arrangements.

ARTHUR MONROE (BILL) BROWN

Arthur Monroe (Bill) Brown, 73, of 913 N. Glenn Avenue, Siler City died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 in Greensboro.

Mr. Brown was born July 1, 1935, the son of Ernest Hall and Lucy Jane McMinn Brown. Mr. Brown was a native of Guntersville, AL, and a graduate of Auburn University. He was a retired textile engineer with Kellwood Company and an Air Force veteran. Bill also worked at Ace Hardware, was a big handy man, played the trumpet and loved working in his yard.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Alyne Bruce of Wilmington; one son, Greg H. Brown and wife, Sandy of Raleigh; two daughters, Kathy B. Tolbert and husband, Jimmy of Jamestown, Dana B. Poindexter and husband, Steve of Greensboro; one brother: Ernest Ray Brown and wife, Barbara of Largo, FL; grandchildren, Amanda and Derek Tolbert, Katlyn Kirkman, Carly, Elaina, and Gracyn Brown; and a loving dog, Gizmo.

The graveside service will be Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City.

ELIZABETH “BETTY” MAY JANE BENSON HOUGH

Siler City – Elizabeth "Betty" May Jane Benson Hough went home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at home, on Sunday, April 26, 2009. She was 88 blessed years old. She was born in Nanticoke, PA on October 4, 1920. She was a graduate of Nanticoke High Class of 1938. She lived in South New Jersey before settling in Siler City, North Carolina with her daughter, Dorothy and son-in-law, Bob Roach of 4079 Alston Bridge Road, Siler City, NC.

The family invited the community to a celebration of her life on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. at St. Julia's Catholic Church, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City, NC.

She is survived by her son, Jerome Benson (wife Romona) of Richmond, Indiana; daughter, Joesphine Carfagno (husband Pat) of Medford Lakes, New Jersey; daughter, Dorothy Roach (husband Bob) of Siler City, North Carolina and daughter, Rosemary Smith (husband James) of Lancaster, PA; and a sister, Rosemary Nallon of Larksville, PA. She is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John E. Hough.

The family invites the community to wear colorful spring apparel, if you choose. She will be in her favorite color, red. The family received friends at St. Julia's Catholic Parish Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 9 to 11 a.m..

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Julia's Catholic Parish, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City, NC.

ELEANOR MAE “SISSY” PHILLIPS DENKINS

Eleanor Mae “Sissy” Phillips Denkins, 89, died Tuesday (04-14-09)

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Rogers Memorial Chapel with burial following at Lee Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Denkins was a native of Chatham County, the daughter of the late Wesley Graham and Judie Stutts Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie C. Denkins; sister Bonnie Arnold; brothers, Glenn Phillips, Sam Phillips, and Willie Phillips.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Moody of Siler City, Barbara Spangler of Sanford; sons, Bobby Denkins, Broadus Denkins, both of Sanford, Billy Denkins of Cameron, Bruce Denkins of Goldston; Benny Earl Denkins; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 809 Wicker St., Sanford, NC 27330.

AVA LEE F. MOFFITT

Ava Lee Frazier Moffitt, 92, of Staley, died Wednesday (04-15-09) at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday (04-17-09) at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro, with Rev. Thurman Williams officiating.

Mrs. Moffitt was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker, and a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church. She was prececed in death by her husband Ray Moffitt and a son, Arthur Moffitt.

Survivors include a son, Jimmie L. Moffit of Staley; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

THOMAS H. HEARN

Thomas Howard Hearn, 86, of new Hill, died Tuesday (04-14-09) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (04-18-09) at New Elam Christian Church with Rev. Gary Moore and Rev. Emerson Woodall officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Masonic graveside services conducted by Apex Masonic Lodge No. 584.

Mr. Hearn was a native of Wake county, the son of the late Cleveland Howell Hearn and Lissie Annette Holt Hearn.

Mr. Hearn was a deacon of New Elam Christian Church. He was a member of Apex Masonic Lodge No. 584, where he was a past Master. He retired from Triangle Brick after 26 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Wade Hearn of the home: daughters, Sherry Hearn Carter of Apex, Rita Hearn McCoy of Roxboro; sons, Ronald Howard Hearn of New Hill, Mark Thomas Hearn of Apex; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to New Elam Christian Church.

ANTHONY SHANE FERGUSON

Anthony Shane Ferguson, 22, of Siler City died Friday, (04-17-09) at Chatham Hospital.

Graveside services were held Monday, (04-20-09) at 11 a.m. at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Moore and Rev. Brian Wellborn officiating.

Mr. Ferguson was the son of Samuel W. and Latonya Joy Ferguson Perry. He was a native of Guilford County, worked for Lowe's Home Improvement in Pittsboro and was a dedicated member of the Silk Hope Fire Department.
He is survived by his parents, Sam and Joy Perry of Siler City; grandparents, Martha Stanley of Siler City and Johnny Stanley of Liberty;.
Memorials may be made to Silk Hope Fire Department, 8110 Silk Hope-Gum Springs Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

SHELBY JEAN CAUSEY

Shelby Jean Causey, 67, of Siler City died Friday (04-17-09) at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

The funeral was held Tuesday (04-21-09) at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tim Cheek and Rev. Billy Ray Chriscoe officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mrs. Causey was the daughter of Roy Elwood and Bertha Mae Willard Shields. A native of Moore County, she was a retired homemaker and member of Community Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Teddy Causey.

Survivors include sons, Larry Causey, Teddy Levon Causey, both of Siler City, Gary Causey of Snow Camp; daughters, Betty Jo Beal, Audrey J. Causey, both of Siler City; sister, Gloria Ann Chriscoe of Siler City; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

PATSY G. CARTER

Mrs. Patsy Anne Gaines Carter, 61, of Asheboro died Friday (04-17-09) at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday (04-23-09) at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with Rev. Jack Ogburn officiating.

Mrs. Carter was a native of Chatham County and had worked at Kerr Drug, Randolph Hospital, Caraway Speedway, and Robin Hood Restaurant. She was preceded in death by her husband Dean Carter and her mother, Billie Gaines.

Survivors include daughter, Shannon Mintz of Asheboro; son, Shawn Carter of Asheboro; father, Alton Gaines of Siler City; sister, Debra Peele of Asheboro; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

LESSIE McDANIEL COX DOWD

Mrs. Lessie McDaniel Cox Dowd, 82, of Siler City, died Monday (04-20-09) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (04-23-09) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Todd Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Dowd was a native of Chatham County, a retired poultry farmer, a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church, and attended Loves Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Ray Cox.

Survivors include her husband, Graham C. Dowd of the home; daughter, Shirley Cox Stout of Ramseur; sons, Jimmy Ray Cox, Jerry Levi Cox, both of Bennett; step-children, Darlene Vasquez of Siler City, Terresa Holloway of Tampa, FL, Jeffrey Dowd of Welcome; brothers, William McDaniel, Robert Mc-Daniel, both of Siler City; sisters, Nancy Meekins of Asheboro, Rachel Marley of North Wilkesboro; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday (04-22-09), from 6-8 p.m., at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

Memorials may be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1414 East Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

REBA JOHNSON CHEEK

Reba Johnson Cheek, 96, of Goldston, N.C., passed away on April 12, 2009, at the Karesh Long Term Care Center in Camden, S.C.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17 at Goldston United Methodist Church, 185 Hillcrest Avenue, Goldston, N.C. with the Rev. Thomas A. Simpson officiating. The family received friends prior to the service from 2 – 3 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Interment followed in the family plot in the Goldston Cemetery. Powers Funeral Home assisted the family.

Mrs. Cheek was born in Goldston on September 5, 1912, the daughter of the late Joseph Daniel and Sallie Lawrence Moses Johnson. A devoted wife and mother, she was married to the late Samuel Cheek for 64 years, married Sept. 7, 1935. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Emma J. White of Sanford, Mildred J. Moses of Sanford and Elva J. Butler of Pittsboro; four brothers, T.M. Johnson and Wilbur Johnson of Raleigh, Quay Johnson of Garner, and Hubert Johnson of Goldston; and son-in-law, Hugh Searcy of Forest City.

Mrs. Cheek had been a member of Goldston United Methodist Church since 1923 and was active in many of the church activities, including the United Methodist Women. She joined The Goldston Woman’s Club in 1936. She was a member of The Winnie Davis Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy in which she was a Real Granddaughter; The James Moore Chapter, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century; The Alfred Moore Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; The Chatham County Historical Society, Girl Scout Leader, and Friends of the Library. She was a graduate of Goldston High School. Mrs. Cheek was interested in arts and crafts, music, genealogy and helping others, but most of all she had an abiding love for her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Cheek Searcy, of Asheville, N.C.; son, Samuel Johnson Cheek, and wife, Nancy, of Camden, S.C.; four grandchildren, Martha Truitt and husband, John, of Biltmore Lake, N.C., Becky Duncan and husband, Mike, of Clifton, VA, John Cheek and wife, Michele, of Greer, S.C., Sallie Harrell and husband, Chris, of Columbia, S.C; great-grandchildren, Katie Truitt, Madison and Matthew Duncan, Noah and Joshua Cheek; sister, Josephine J. Myers, of Candor, N.C.; sister-in-law, Beverly F. Johnson, of Willow Springs, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to The Goldston United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.

ENA PAGE GUNN

Ena Page Gunn, 97, of Millry, AL died Saturday (03-28-09) at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, MS.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (04-01-09) at North Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gunn was the daughter of Sarah Annie Brown Page and Thomas Allan Page, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving Glenn Gunn; grandchildren, Barbara Ann Gunn Baxter, Kenneth Dave Gunn; and great-granddaughter, Amanda Gunn.

Survivors include sons, Robert Louis Gunn of Pittsboro; John Wesley Gunn, Marvin Allan Gunn, both of Millry, AL; daughters, Annie Louise Gunn Lewis of Heidelburg, MS, Sadie Katherine Gunn McIlwain of Lawrenceburg, TN, Mary Ruth Gunn Gunter of Mobile, AL, Carolyn Joyce Gunn Johnson of Millry, AL; 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren
