KATIE HARRIS BOWDEN
Mrs. Katie Harris Bowden, 85, of Siler City died Tuesday (03-17-2009) at the Chatham Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (03-21-2009) at Rocky River Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bowden was a member of Rocky River Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leroy Bowden; children, Willie Mae Strickland, Laura Bowden-Headen, Ricky Bowden, all of Siler City, Larry Bowden, Sandra Higgins, Carolyn Nesi, all of Greensboro, Tammy Bowden of Chapel Hill; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild.
LOIS MAY WILKIE THOMPSON
Mrs. Lois May Wilkie Thompson, 93, of Pittsboro, Sunday, (03-22-2009) at the Laurels of Chatham.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, (03-25-2009) at Pittsboro United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jan Nicholson-Hill officiating. Interment followed at the Haywood Independent Bible Church Cemetery in Moncure.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Moncure, the daughter of Mont Thomas Wilkie and Florence Helen Poe. She attended Radford University, and taught for 32 years in the Chatham County School System as a 2nd grade teacher at Moncure and Pittsboro Elementary. She was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, and she was involved with the Retired Teachers Association of Chatham County for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen T. Sorrell of Valdese; sons, Bill Thompson of Pittsboro, Jim Thompson of Overland Park, KS; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Thompson and a son, Tommy Thompson.

EVANGELINE NEFF
Evangeline Josephine (Hondzinski) Neff, 87, of Pittsboro, died at The Laurels of Chatham.
She was the daughter of the late Severyn and Anna (Zapatka) Hondzinski, and resided in Naugatuck for over eighty years. She was a graduate of Prospect Street School, Naugatuck High School, and The College of Physical Therapy, New Haven.
She is survived by her husband, Victor Neff, of Pittsboro; and a daughter, Dr. Severine Neff of Pittsboro and Goleta, CA.

ESTHER WALKER PARDUE
Esther Walker Pardue, 98, of 1825 East St., Pittsboro, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Pittsboro Christian Village.
Mrs. Pardue was born in Wilkes County to the late William and Emily Mathis Walker. She was a retired sales clerk with Thalhimers Department Store. She attended The Gospel Center and Northgate Chapel. Mrs. Pardue was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Oliver Pardue, and a son, Jerry Pardue.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Carzoo and husband, Dean, of New Bern; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, officiated by Gerald Baker. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Benevolent Fund of Pittsboro Christian Village, 1825 East St., Pittsboro.
On Monday, April 6, a memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Pittsboro Christian Village.

DONALD RAY LANGLEY
Donald Ray Langley, 63, of Siler City died Tuesday (03-10-2009) at Wake Med Center in Raleigh.
funeral service was held Friday (03-13-2009) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herbert Lowry Jr. and Rev. Noah Albarez officiating. Entombment followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

JOHN ARNE CARLSON
Mr. John Arne Carlson, 66, of Chapel Hill died Tuesday (03-10-2009) at his home.
Memorial service was held Saturday (03-14-2009) at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Hood officiating.
Mr. Carlson was a native of Chicago, IL, the son of Rolf John Harry Carlson and Evelyn Marie Hakanson Carlson. He attended Princeton University, graduated from the University of Illinois and received his Masters Degree in Education from UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a real estate appraiser, a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chapel Hill, and was active in the VASA Swedish Club of Raleigh.
He is survived by a brother, Rolf Carlson of Worthington, MN.

WALTER H. OLDHAM
Walter H. Oldham, 73, of Bear Creek died Saturday (03-14-2009) at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday (03-16-2009) at Cool Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. William Cashion officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late Henry Blaine and Bessie Jane Maness Oldham. He graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury. Early in life, he sold Caterpillar bulldozers and later worked as a bulldozer operator. Later, he began farming where he spent his time raising cattle and chickens. He was preceded in death by a brother James Harvey Oldham.
Survivors include his wife, Chris R. Oldham; daughters Sandy Johnson of Siler City, Lisa Oldham of Aberdeen; sister, Wilsie Dalton of Blackstone, VA; brothers Tommie Oldham of Robbins, Charlie Oldham of Bear Creek, and Russell Oldham of Siler City

MACIE DUNCAN NEWNAM
Mrs. Macie Duncan Newnam, 97, of Greensboro, died Friday (03-13-2009) at Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (03-17-2009) at Florida Street Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Glasgow officiating. Burial followed at Guilford Memorial Park.
Mrs. Newnam was a native of Chatham County, the daughter of M.W. and Ella Duncan. She was a member of Florida Street Baptist Church where she served on the kitchen committee and worked in the nursery for many years. She was a life-long member of the Guilford County PTA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sidney Elmore Newnam, one sister, and five brothers.
Survivors include sons, Edward Newnam of Wake Forest, Sherrill Newnam of Orangeburg, SC, Craig Newnam, Art Newnam, both of Greensboro; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

EDWARD MASON
Mr. Edward Mason, 62, of Asheboro died Monday, (03-02-2009) at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday (03-04-2009) at Harris Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Mamie Mason of the home; children, Eddie Lee Mason, Zena Pandora Mason, Selena Finger, Enasion Alston; mother, Emma Mason of Siler City; siblings, Angelique Foster, Earnestine Mason, Deloris Caldwell, Betty Marie Brown, Tommy Mason, Willie Mason; and 12 grandchildren.
JOSEPHINE POLLY WHITE
Mrs. Josephine Polly White, 73, of Siler City died Tuesday (03-03-2009) at Chatham Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (03-07-2009) at First Missionary Baptist Church with burial following in Burnett’s Chapel Church Cemetery in Graham.
Mrs. White was a graduate of Chatham High School. She received a nursing degree from Central Carolina Community College, and later, received her education in child development, after which she operated her own business, Polly’s Kids Day Care. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board, and the nurse’s aid society ministry.
Survivors include children, Judy Diane Pettiford of Burlington, Craig White of Raleigh, Dale White, Mike Craven, both of Siler City; sisters, Carol Hanner of Bear Creek, Jewel Alston of Pittsboro; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
JO ANN FIELDS SCOTT
Jo Ann Fields Scott, 69, of Bear Creek, died Friday, (03-13-2009) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Monday (03-16-2009) at Bear Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. David Hicks, Rev. Bob Wachs and Gyles Saunders officiating. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Scott was the daughter of Joe and Nannie Bell Gaines Fields, a native of Chatham County and a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church where she was the secretary and treasurer, played the piano and was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Melvin "Box" Fields and Jack Fields.
Mrs. Scott is survived by daughters, Donna S. Fields of Bear Creek, Penny S. Mitchell of Goldston; son, Billy Joe "Pig" Scott of Siler City; sister, Fern Fields Beavers of Bear Creek; ten Grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

SHIRLEY HOWELL ROOD
Shirley Howell Rood, 83, of Siler City died Friday, (03-13-2009) at her residence.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (03-18-2009) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Park.
Mrs. Rood was the daughter of Harry and Florence Seagal Howell. She was a native of Lehman, PA and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin J. Rood, Sr.
Survivors include sons, Richard F. Rood of Siler City, Benjamin J. Rood, Jr. of Denver, CO; sister, Fern H. Rogers and brother, Harry Howell both of PA; two granddaughters, and one great-grandson.
WARREN EDWARD WAGNER
Warren Edward Wagner, 72, of Fearrington Village died Monday (03-16-2009).
Services are pending.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of the home; son, W. Kent Wagner of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughters, Karen Mayer of Kailua, HI, Lauren Furtak of Glastonbury, CT, Alana Guerra of Washington, DC; brother, G. Robert Wagner of Dallas, TX; and eight grandchildren.
