JEANETTE LORRAINE BLACKWELL

On a brisk, fall morning, October 6, 1948, the Brewer family was increased by one. Major and Martha were blessed by God with a baby girl whom they named Jeanette Lorraine. What joy she brought to the family – shared by her older sister, Deadre Delphine; who preceded her in death in 1996.

She transitioned from earthly life to eternal life on Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

Her teaching career spanned more than three decades. She taught in the Chatham County Public School system (Bennett Elementary School and Horton Middle School) and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School system (Glenwood Elementary School and McDougle Elementary School). Because of her love for teaching; many of her summers were spent teaching summer school, hoping to better prepare her students for the next school year and grade. She also spent many summer sessions in conferences to better prepare herself, her colleagues and her students for new era technology operations. She was a long standing member of the North Carolina Teacher Academy.

Jeanette leaves to fondly remember her, her husband of 33 years, Russell; her sons, Lemont, Siler City, and Jonathan, Greensboro; her mother, Mrs.

Martha Marsh Brewer, Siler City; her sister, Paulette Brewer Hadley and her husband, Edward, Pittsboro; two nieces, Roberta Paulette Hadley, Durham, and Christina Delphine Dorsette, Detroit; many other relatives and friends, including her devoted best friend, Mrs. Wanda Cates, Lincolnton; and the entire Cates/Ramseur family; and cousin, Philberte Marsh, Siler City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at the United Church of Chapel Hill at 1 p.m., 1321 Martin Luther King Blvd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Burial followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Family received friends at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2008.

Arrangements were made by Jones Funeral Home, 112 Graham St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

HARRIET M. CAGLE

Harriet M. Cagle of Social Circle, GA, passed away October 4, 2008, at the age of 58. She was preceded in death by her parents, Royal and Maisie Brown Murray. Mrs. Cagle is survived by her loving husband, Geary Cagle.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Cagle were held Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 2:00 PM, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 55 Hwy. 229, Social Circle, GA, with Rev. Michael Dunbar and Rev. Michael Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Lawnwood Memorial Park.

The family received friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd St., Covington, GA, Tuesday, October 7, from 6:00-8:00 PM.

WADE WILLIAM JOHNSON

Wade William Johnson, age 87, of Arbor Drive, Lexington passed away Thursday (10-2-2008) at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Sunday at First Baptist Church in Lexington with Dr. Ray Howell, 3rd and Rev. Tommy Wilson officiating. Burial followed at 4:00 pm Sunday at Rocky River Baptist Church Cemetery in Siler City.

Wade was born April 10, 1921 in Chatham County, NC to William Ernest Johnson and Elizabeth Ward Johnson. A member of First Baptist Church, member of the Fellowship Class, on the building and grounds committee, former Deacon, Sunday school teacher and usher. He was a Lion for 59 years and a member of the Downtown Lions Club of Lexington. He enjoyed his Monday Morning Coffee Club, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and an avid gardener.

His love of animals pushed him toward being a beef cattle farmer and was a member of the NC Cattlemen’s Association. A 1949 graduate of NC State University with a BS Degree in Animal Science and also a MS degree in 1974.

He worked with the NC Agricultural Extension for 35 years, having served 32 years in Davidson County. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for County Agents. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. During his service in the military, he was a POW and was captured near Saarbrucken in 1945 and spent one year in the Army Hospital.

He received the Bronze Star for Heroic Meritorious Achievement, two Purple Hearts, for wounds received in combat and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a Life member of VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8, DAV Chapter 13 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Leon Johnson.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years Opal Clemmons Johnson; one daughter, Beth Pfaff and husband John of Chester, NJ; one son, Bill Johnson and wife Kathryn of Fort Mill, SC; four grandchildren, Betsy and William Pfaff and Emily and Walter Johnson; one sister, Sarah J. McPherson of Snow Camp, NC; one brother, Paul Johnson and wife Betty of Siler City, NC and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Saturday night from 6 until 8 pm at Davidson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials should be directed to First Baptist Church, PO Box 436, Lexington, NC 27293 or to donors favorite charity.

JOSEPH ANTHONY PANDISCIA

Mr. Joseph “Joe Anthony Pandiscia, 66, died October 1, 2008 at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living in Pittsboro following a period of declining health.

Joe was born in Hartford, CT, on February 28, 1942, the son of Anthony Pandiscia and Mary DeFrancesco Pandiscia. He lived for a number of years in Newington, CT, then ten years in Westbrook, CT. Following declining health, he resided in Farmington, CT for two and 1/2 years, until his move to NC one month ago. Joe was an administrator in the banking industry in Connecticut before his retirement. After retiring he volunteered at the Knights of Columbus in Westbrook, CT. A lifelong Catholic, Joe was an avid sportsman, especially enjoying skiing and golf. He served in the National Guard, and was a long time fan of the NY Yankees. Most importantly, Joe was proud of his three sons.

Survivors include his wife Patricia C. Pandiscia of Cary, NC; his sons, Anthony “Tony” Pandiscia and wife Angela, and their children Derek and Jillian, of Cary, Christopher Pandiscia and partner Andrea Brower of Milford, CT, and Joseph “Jay” Pandiscia of Lake-wood, CO; his sister Deborah Sullivan and her husband Brian of Berlin, CT; as well as nieces and nephews.

Following cremation, a memorial service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held at a time yet to be determined.

The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to : The Alzheimer’s Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, NC 27605-1351.

ROBERT ALVIS BLACKWOOD

Robert Alvis Blackwood, 74, of 5655 Big Woods Road, died Monday (09-22-2008) in UNC Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday (09-25-2008) at Farrington Road Baptist Church in Chapel Hill with Rev. Jim Greenly officiating. Burial followed in Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Blackwood was a utility and building contractor and a veteran of the US Navy, serving in the Korean War. He was a service officer for Legion Post #6 Chapel Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Lowe Blackwood; son, Shannon Blackwood of Chapel Hill; and sister Shirley McFarling.

Memorial may be made to Farrington Road Baptist Church, 5936 Farrington Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

JAMES EDWARD GOODMAN

James Edward (Jim) Goodman, 42, of Sanford, died Sunday (09-28-2008) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Edward’s Hill Friends Meeting, 92 Ed Leonard Road, Siler City, with Rev. Josh Conrad officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Goodman was a native of Williston, Florida and was a self employed carpenter. He attended Crossroads Ministries, Broadway.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Thomas Goodman of the home; one son, Christopher James Goodman of Haw Branch; step-children, Charli and Chad Cox of the home; parents, Jimmy A. and Mary Merlkey Caviness of Bear Creek; one sister, Sissy Goodman-Sapir.

HATTIE JUANITA SEYMOUR

Hattie Juanita Seymour, 82, of Pittsboro, died Saturday (09-20-2008) at Laurel’s of Chatham in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (09-23-2008) at 2:00 p.m. at Haw River Baptist Church, Pittsboro, with Rev. Julius Jones and Rev. Stanley Burnett officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She is survived by daughters, Hattie Burnette and Jeanette Alston; sons, T. J. Seymour and Glento Seymour; sisters, Mae Ruth Seymour of Siler City and Jenny Chavis of Chapel Hill; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and, two great-great-grandchildren.

BETTY LOU BOWLIN SHUE

Betty Lou Bowlin Shue, 70, died Tuesday (09-25-2008) at her home.

Funeral services were held Thursday (09-25-2008) at 1:00 p.m. at the Rogers Memorial Chapel.

A native of Stokes County, Mrs. Shue is survived by her husband, James Shue, Sr.; sons, Ronnie Whitaker Sr., James Whitaker, James Emory Shue, Jr., all of Sanford; daughters, Sandra Overcash, Glenda Whitaker, Janice Minter, Carol Potter, April Renee Whitaker, all of Sanford, and Robin Carrol of Harrells; sister, Lettie Matthews of Texas; brother, Elmer Bowlin of Sanford; 33 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

ROSE PACELKO KOLASSA

Rose Pacelko Kolassa, 95, of Siler City, died Monday (09-29-2008) at Chatham Hospital.

Mrs. Kolassa was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the United States in 1927, when she was 14 years old. She attended school in New York City where she learned to speak, write and read English. Mrs. Kolassa was a member of the Ladies Axillary of the Elks Club, a member of Ukrainian/Polish/American Club and the Senior Citizens Club of St. Michael’s RC Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Henry Kolassa.

She is survived by daughter Patricia Britton of Monroe Township, NJ, and daughter Diane Gatlin and husband Jay of Siler City; sister Tanya Manella of Montreal, Canada, and sister Stella Mateuszow of Stuart, Florida; five grandchildren; Sally Goeb of New Egypt, NJ, Joseph Maietta of Terra Verde, FL, Lenore Bryden of Siler City, NC, Gary Zimmerman of Coinjock, NC, and Wendy Gatlin of Greensboro, NC; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation in North Carolina will be held Thursday (10-02-2008) at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, NC from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Visitation in New Jersey will be held Monday (10-06-2008) at McCracken Funeral Home, Union, NJ from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, followed by a Requiem Mass at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s RC Church. Interment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery, Union, NJ.

JEAN GOODE KLINE

Jean Goode Kline, age 79, of Siler City, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Chatham Hospital, Siler City. Mrs. Kline was born December 28, 1928, the daughter of Julian Lawrence and Annie Walton Goode.

Mrs. Kline was a native of Chatham County and a retired homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Siler City. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, John Louis Kline, Jr.

She is survived by two daughters: Sandy Kline of Pittsboro, Debbie K.

Biles and husband, Kevin of Siler City; three sisters: Annie G. McCommons of Albemarle, Doris G. White and husband, Robert of Siler City, Peggie G. Dunn of Siler City, and one brother: James “Jimmie” L. Goode and wife, Katherine of TX; grandchildren, Andy and Laura Couch, Nick, Jenny and Johnny Cook, Justin and Cassie Biles.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 2, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral will be Friday, October 3, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, with Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

FRANK LLOYD WICKER

Frank Lloyd Wicker, 76, of Siler City, died Tuesday (09-16-2008) at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday (09-19-2008) at 1p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, Siler City, with Rev. Mark Ainsworth officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Mr. Wicker was a native of Chatham County, a Navy veteran and a member of Holly’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Ramseur. He was a retired truck driver for Golden Transport and also drove for Harold Andrews Trucking, Glosson Motor Lines and Chatham Dog Food.

He is survived by three sons; Timothy Wicker of Lakeland, FL, Philip Wicker, Mark Wicker, both of Siler City; two sisters, Susan W. Haymore and Carol W. Johnson, both of Siler City; one brother, Donald Wicker of Staley; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ELEANOR DOUGLAS BOWER

Eleanor Douglas Bower, 88, died Thursday (09-18-2008) at Cambridge Hills of Pittsboro.

A memorial service will be held Friday (09-26-2008) at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Auburn, ME.

Ms. Bower was born in Boston, MA, and was a retired bookkeeper.

She is survived by one son, Doug Bower and wife, Teresa, of Springfield, IL; and two grandchildren.
