ALICE CAROLYN CONYERS DUGAN
Alice Carolyn Conyers Dugan, age 91, of Siler City died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Galloway Ridge, Pittsboro.

Mrs. Dugan was born in Franklin County on August 11, 1921, the daughter of Benjamin Jackson and Halcy Pearl (Wright) Conyers. She was a school teacher, a homemaker and a member of St. Julia Parrish. Alice was a member of the Siler City garden club and the art committee at Chatham Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Michael J. Dugan and her parents.

She is survived by daughter, Cathy Dugan of Raleigh, and son, Tim Dugan of Siler City.

The funeral Mass will be Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 12 noon at St. Julia Catholic Parrish, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City with Father Jim Fukes officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Julia Catholic Parrish, 210 Harold Hart Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

Smith & Buckner Funeral is assisting the family.

MARY ATHELENE CLAPP BRANTLEY
Mary Athelene Clapp Brantley died December 6, 2012, at The GrayBrier in Trinity, NC.

Mrs. Brantley was born in Siler City, in 1923 to Sam Siler Clapp and Mary Ethel Campbell Clapp. She is predeceased by her parents, an infant brother, stepmother, Clee Poe Clapp and former husbands, William Wasserman and Westray Brantley. She is survived by her sister, Orpha Lee Phillips of Siler City; daughters Cheryl Wasserman Powers and husband, David, of Southern Pines; Diana Wasserman Hairr and husband, Frank, of Climax; grandchildren, Steve Powers and wife Tiffany, Rachel Powers Patterson and husband Andy; Kathy Hairr Bonyun and husband David, Emily Hairr Hendricks and husband Chris; nine great grandchildren: Savannah, Lauren and Hadley Powers; Peyton and Abram Patterson; Sam and Ben Bonyun; and Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Hendricks.

Mrs. Brantley was a very brave, strong, independent woman with numerous interests, talents and skills. She graduated salutatorian from Siler City High School in 1941, then attended Woman’s College in Greensboro (now UNC-G) graduating in 1942 from the Commercial Class. Following graduation from Woman’s College, she worked as a secretary for Burlington Mills and later was private secretary to W. H. Andrews, Vice President for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. She met and married her first husband, William Wasserman during World War II. After the war, they lived in New York City where she worked as a secretary for an attorney.

She was an accomplished pianist and gave her private senior recital at the home of her parents under the direction of Mrs. C. L. Brower. Mrs. Brantley was also a highly skilled seamstress. She made clothing for her children and grandchildren as well as drapes, bedspreads and other items for the home. Her signature sewing projects included beautiful Raggedy-Ann dolls with both Ann and Andy wardrobes as well as Mother-Goose dolls.

She loved red, in part due to the family association with International Harvester Tractors. Her father, Sam Clapp, founded Clapp Brothers Implement and Truck Company with his brother, Ben Clapp. During their teen years, she and her sister would help Mr. Sam by driving new IH trucks from Charlotte to Siler City to be sold at the business.

Her funeral service was held at Smith and Buckner Funeral home on Sunday, December 9, 2012 with interment at Chatham Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Meals4Kids food ministry at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 5601 Liberty Rd., Greensboro, NC 27406.

EDNA C. PHILLIPS
Mrs. Edna C. Phillips 81, of 8559 Siler City-Glendon Road, Bear Creek passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 at Universal Healthcare in Ramseur.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church where she was a member with Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Roger Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was a Chatham County native and loved flowers. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray “Bub” Phillips and a daughter, Cheryl Pettit. She was also preceded in death by grandsons, Shawn Phillips and Phillip Pettit.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, Billy J. Phillips of the home; sons, Mike Phillips and wife Margaret, of Ramseur, Dennis J. Phillips and wife Judy, and Terry Phillips and wife Sherrie, all of Bear Creek; sisters, Mary Sue Chandler of Mt. Airy, Betty Kathryn Fesmire of Bear Creek, Anne Kiser of Fayetteville. nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; and best friends, Dink and Frances Ellis of Bear Creek.

Visitation was held Tuesday, December 11, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, NC 27208 and other times at the home.

Joyce-Brady Chapel is serving the Phillips family.

JEREMY GRANT FIELDS
Jeremy Grant Fields peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 9, 2012.

Jeremy was born January 12, 1988 in Siler City. He was the son of Jack and Cecelia Fields. Jeremy was diagnosed in December 2000 with Batten Disease (NCL neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) a neurodegenerative disease. There is still no cure for Batten Disease. In his short 24 years, he lost his vision, speech and mobility but he never lost his smile.

Jeremy is survived by his loving mother, Cecelia Fields; his brothers Curry Fields, Jeff Fields and wife Ashley, Lyle Brinn and wife Kate; his sister Missy Fields Petty and husband Shawn; his grandmother Gladys K. Phillips; his grandfather Tommy Dixon. Jeremy was preceded in death by his father, Jack Fields and his paternal grandmother, Nannie Gaines Fields.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Bear Creek Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jeremy’s memory be made to the Southeast Chapter of Batten Disease Support and Research Association, 6304 Bayswater Trail, Raleigh, NC 27612 or UNC Hospice P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family.

WILLIAM WATLINGTON DOW
William Watlington Dow passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at home in Pittsboro, Chatham County. Born in Hamilton County, Ohio on February 15, 1945, Bill Dow was the eldest son of John Witherspoon Dow and Laura Leggett Dow. Bill grew up in Mississippi and Ohio and was educated at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Bill practiced medicine with a particular interest in rural children’s health, and realized that by working in agriculture, he could improve living standards and health through organic farming. He moved to Chatham County in 1981, developing Ayrshire Farm, the first certified organic farm in North Carolina. He helped start the Carrboro Farmers’ Market and also sold produce, herbs and flowers to fine restaurants in the Triangle area. He also co-founded Carolina Farm Stewardship Association which supports and advocates for small and organic farms in North and South Carolina.

As a member of the Chatham County Planning Board, he participated in many community – based organizations.

He is survived by his partner, Ms. Daryl Farrington Walker of Pittsboro, and his brother, John A. Dow of Mississippi; John’s son, Jeremy, a cousin, Tom Dow of Sanford, and several other cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Spring Friends Meeting, 3323 East Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Snow Camp, NC 27349.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to any of the following: Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, PO Box 448, Pittsboro, NC 27312; CCCC Foundation, Sustainable Agricultural Program, 1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford, NC 27330; or Spring Friends Meeting, 3323 East Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Snow Camp, NC 27349.

DANIEL BLANCHETTE
Daniel Blanchette, 46, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday, (11-27-2012) at his residence.

Funeral services were held Sunday, (12-01-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsboro.

KATHERINE M. RODGERS
Elder Katherine M. Rodgers of Pittsboro died Sunday (11-25-2012)

Mrs. Rodgers, born March 10, 1956 to the late Rev. Bernice and Ethelene Moore in Sumter, S.C., attended Northwood High School and Central Carolina Community College. She was a member of Liberty Chapel Church, the LC Singers and directed the choir. She was an ordained Elder.

Survivors include a son, Gavin Rodgers of Chapel Hill; sister, Edith Hackney of New Hill; brothers, Bernice Moore, Jr. of Pittsboro; and one grandchild. She was married to Eddye Rodgers.

JOYCE JOHNSON MANESS
Joyce Johnson Maness, 90, of Siler City passed away Friday, November 30, 2012.

Mrs. Maness was born in Chatham County on May 31, 1922 the daughter of Ernest and Arizona (Adcock) Johnson. She was a retired textile worker, of the Baptist faith and a member of the Eastern Star # 9. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Lennie Maness, her parents and brothers, Raymond Johnson, J. D. Johnson and Clifton Johnson.

She is survived by one daughter, Beverly M. Allen and husband, Dan of Burlington; one son, Billy Maness of Siler City; grandson, Austin Allen; and sister-in-law, Daisy Johnson.

The family received friends Monday, December 3, 2012 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

MRS. EFFIE MAE STANLEY AVENT
Mrs. Effie Mae Stanley Avent, of Coventry House, Siler City died Monday, December 3, 2012 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

She was born in Siler City on May 26, 1916, graduated from Siler City High School and lived in Siler City for 90 years. She retired after 30 years of service with the State of North Carolina Department of Transportation as a Senior Driver Licenses Examiner. She was awarded the Order of The Long Leaf Pine by the State of North Carolina. Effie Mae was a past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, a member of the Chatham Hospital Auxiliary, the Senior Ladies Bridge Club and a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Don B. Avent and his wife, Joyce M.; daughter-in-law, Carol Avent; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde B. Avent and son, Stanley G. Avent.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

CHARLES “LARRY” HOLDER
Charles “Larry” Holder, 71, of the Haw Branch Community died Tuesday (02-26-2013)
Funeral services were held Saturday, (03-02-2013) at 11 a.m. at Red Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Scott McInnis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The son of Charlie and Ada Holder, Larry was a member of Red Branch Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and worked with the Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Team. Larry was elected to the Moore County Soil and Water Conservation Board and was past president of the National Contract Poultry Growers Association. His past employment included Tax Appraiser for Moore and Lee County. He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Bill and Robert Holder and sisters, Inez Allen, Louise Gossett, Betty Sullivan and Polly Wheeler.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret O’Brien Holder; sons, Wilson Holder and David Vallas; brother, Pete Holder of Carbonton; and two granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the grandchildren’s educational trust fund: Wilson Education No. 2 Trust, 1725 N Main Street, High Point, NC 27262.

JANICE LEE HALL
Janice Lee Hall, 73, of Sanford, died Wednesday, (02-27-2013) at Central Carolina Hospital.

Burial for Ms. Hall will follow at a later date at Mountain View Cemetery in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

Mrs. Hall was born August 22, 1939 to the late Richard C. Hall and Dorothy Stuart Hall. She was a payroll clerk for the Town of Hartford, Connecticut. There are no surviving relatives.

L. RACHEL BARKER
L. Rachel Barker 78, of Siler City, died Thursday, (02-28-2013) at her residence.

Funeral services were held Sunday, (03-03-2013) at Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church where she was a member with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ms. Barker was a Chatham County native and an EKG technician. She was the daughter of the late Johnie H. and Dena Hicks Barker. She was also preceded in death by a brother, David Barker.

Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Phillips of the home; sons, Gary Phillips of Bennett, Ronnie Dean Phillips of Mineral Springs; brothers, Johnie H. Barker Jr. of Bennett, Earl Barker of Sanford, Virgil Barker of Siler City; sisters; Allene Hart of Siler City, Christine Harris of High Point, Virginia Justice of Siler City, Juanita Richardson of Bear Creek, Frances Gilmore of Siler City; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM EARLE PENDERGRASS
William Earle Pendergrass, 64, of Siler City died Friday, (03-01-2013) at Laurels Of Chatham, Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday (03-06-2013) at Providence Independent Church with Rev. Brian Caldwell and Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Pendergrass was the son of William and Eppie Hart Pendergrass and a native of Chatham County. He was a member of Providence Independent Methodist Church. William worked for Gaylord Manufacturing, Stout Furniture and Selig Manufacturing.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle (Gaines) Pendergrass; daughter, Cynthia P. Mote of Silk Hope; son, Timothy Earle Pendergrass of Silk Hope; brother, Joe Lynn Pendergrass of Siler City; and two grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday at Providence Independent Church, from 3 to 4 p.m., prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Providence Independent Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 905 Providence Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

DAVID PATRICK LINNEY, III
Mr. David Patrick Linney, III, 63, of Sanford, died Tuesday, (02-26-2013) at Central Carolina Hospital.

A memorial service was held Friday, (03-01-2013) at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Arnold B. Lovell and Wendell McGee officiating.

Mr. Linney was born in Wake County, on December 3, 1949 to the late David Patrick Linney, Jr. and Barbara Moore Linney. David graduated from Marlette High School in Marlette, MIand was self-employed for many years with Cafco Hospitality.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife Sharon Murchison Linney; son, Joshua Linney of Florida; step-son, Scott Stone ofFt. Mill, SC; step-daughter, Ashley Brown of Mint Hill; sisters, Jeanne Cooper, Barbara Linney, Dianne Braren, Jo Ann Ezell; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 203 Hawkins Ave., Sanford, NC 27330.
