ELLIS PAUL VAUGHAN, JR.
Ellis Paul Vaughan, Jr., 65, of Siler City died Sunday, (02-24-2013) at Chatham Hospital, Inc.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Franklin County on May 3, 1947, the son of Ellis and Elizabeth (Shearin) Vaughan, Sr. Paul was of the Baptist faith and had been employed as a welder at Basic Metal and Contract Steel. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Veronica Gleeson.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Vaughan of the home; daughters, Michelle Boone of Staley, Kim Scotton Departa of Siler City, son, James Springfield of AZ; sisters, Ruby Champion of Youngsville, Virginia Ripley of Swansboro, Gloria Cooke of Durham; brother, Danny Vaughan of Clayton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials on behalf of the family to Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

FRANCES CRABTREE COOPER
Frances Crabtree Cooper, 82, of Pittsboro died Saturday (02-23-2013) at the Laurels of Chatham.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (02-26-2013) at Rock Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Faust, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Chatham County October 1, 1930, the daughter of the late Herman D. Crabtree and Flossie Brown Crabtree Smith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, George L. Cooper.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd E. Cooper of the home; sons, Edward “Ed” Cooper of Kinston, Danny L. Cooper of Pittsboro; sister, Lois C. Paschal of Oregon; brother, William Smith of Pittsboro; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to Rock Springs Baptist Church, 29 Rock Springs Church Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

STEPHEN EDWARD HARRIS
Stephen Edward Harris, 83, of Pittsboro, died Friday (02-22-2013) at his residence.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (02-27-2013) at Russell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Charles Howard officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Steve Junior Harris of Moncure; daughter, Faydene Harris of Butner; stepsons, Joe Perkins of Apex, Earl

Perkins of Newton, GA; sister, Emma McIvery; 14 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.

VICTORIA JOHNSON FORD
Victoria Johnson Ford, 80, of Liberty died Saturday (02-23-2013) at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held Friday (03-01-2013) at 3 p.m. at Margarets Chapel United Holy Church with Elder Carollene Gardine and Rev. Jesse R. Goldston officiating. Burial will follow in Olivers Chapel Church cemetery.

Mrs. Ford was a native of Chatham County and a member of Margarets Chapel United Holy Church.

Survivors include daughters, Alice Garner of Staley, Sara Ford, Alfreda Huges, both of Liberty, Lucille Ford of Ramsuer; sons, Lewis Ford, Clarence Ford, Donald Ford, all of Staley, David Ford of South Carolina; sisters, Annie Lang of Greensboro, Gertrude Caviness of Julian, Marie Alston of Greensboro, Regina Buchannan of Durham; and brothers, Roscoe Johnson of Liberty.

JAMES FRANK TEAGUE
James Frank Teague, 81, of Staley died Wednesday (02-20-2013) at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (03-01-2013) at 1 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, Siler City, with Rev. Barry R. Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Teague was a native of Chatham County. Surviving is a daughter, Martha T. Marsh of Greensboro and one grandchild.

PAGE HUMPHREY VERNON
Page Humphrey Vernon died Wednesday, February 20, 2013 in her home. It was a beautiful sunny morning, much like Page herself.

Page was born in Warsaw, NY, April 30, 1952, where she grew up with her parents, Harriott Page Humphrey and Wolcott J. “Bud” Humphrey, Jr., both deceased, and five brothers, Wolcott J. “Jay”, deceased, Peter, John, Tom and Mark Otis. In a house with five brothers, who called her “Princess”, she learned to hold her own and was known for her sharp elbows.

Page loved her brothers, their wives, and families. She was the beloved “Aunt Page” to her nieces and nephews whom she loved deeply; Wolcott, Jamie (husband Todd and her children), Chris, Page, Katie, Thomas, Joe, Arielle, Haley, Jessica, and Danielle. She was overjoyed to spend time with these and her Summerlin kin, John, Tina, and John, Jr., at their family reunion in January, 2013.

Page and her husband Jim were married October 10, 1981 in Warsaw, NY. They have resided at their home in northern Chatham County since 1983. Their children, Benjamin Tyler and Amos Alexander were born in 1984 and 1985 respectively and attended Chatham County schools through graduation, Ben is a law student at the University of Colorado -Boulder Law School. Amos is an actor and writer in Brooklyn, NY.

She was a loved member of the Vernon family, a daughter to Jim’s mother, Nancy and his father Charles, a friend and sister to her husband’s siblings Eleanor, Catharine, Fox, and Patrick and their spouses. She cherished her time with her nieces Allison, Susanna, and Kate. Page enjoyed countless wonderful days with her family at their mountain cabin, “Sandy Bottom, ” in Celo, NC.

Over the course of more than thirty years in and around Chatham County, Page built a large community of friends, with whom she enjoyed music, dancing, food, and the outdoors. She especially loved her time spent at the beach, in the mountains, and in the yard with the “Five Families.”

Page graduated from Trinity College in 1974, and Santa Clara University School of Law in 1980. She began her career in Chapel Hill in 1981 as assistant district attorney for Orange and Chatham Counties. While raising a family, she wrote for the UNC School of Government before joining the law firm of Barber, Bradshaw, and Vernon in 1991, where she practiced until 2002. Her special interest in children and education then led her to the Juvenile Criminal Law Clinic at the UNC School of Law and later Duke University School of Law’s Children’s Education Law Center. After several years as a volunteer guardian ad litem, Page was elected District Court Judge and served from 2008 through 2011. The judge’s robe fit Judge Vernon perfectly and she wore it with dignity, grace, and professionalism. Even her closest friends found it easy to call her “Judge”.

Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Chatham County Together! or the North Carolina Botanical Garden.

CARLENE DIXON
Carlene Dixon, daughter of Alva and Harry Engelhard, returned home on February 21, 2013 at the age of 55. Born on December 12, 1957, Carlene spent her early years in Florida, Georgia and abroad with her mother. A wanderer at heart, she traveled the country with her family before moving to Virginia to attend college.

Carlene graduated in 1988 from George Washington University with degrees in Political Science and Women’s Studies but her passion was to teach others to embrace learning themselves. She taught at Central Carolina Community College in their continuing education programs, championed the distance-learning initiative and improved the lives of many students, parents and faculty with her unique approaches to both learning and teaching.

She and her husband, Doug, also brought this same care and passion to fostering children for many years. She always strived to make the lives of others better and was a strong advocate for the children in her care.

In addition to teaching and fostering, Carlene was an avid learner who read constantly, an artisan of scents and a lover of animals.

She is survived by her soul mate and husband, Douglas Dixon, son Shawn, daughter-in-law Tia, and many others whose lives were touched by her.

A memorial service was held Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 4 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

EVONNE BROWN MUSSO
Evonne Brown Musso, 80, of 1112 West Third Street, Siler City died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mrs. Musso was born July 8, 1932 in Chatham County, the daughter of Wesley R. and Maggie (Moore) Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Musso and a son, Larry Dean Brooks.

Evonne was a homemaker and a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church. She did volunteer work in New York and loved to knit and crochet.

She is survived by two sons, Ronnie Brooks of Bennett, Mickey Brooks of Asheboro; grandsons, James, Mickey, Larry, Jimmy and Rickey Brooks; great-grandchildren, Zachery, Hagan and Madison; two step-daughters, Sally Roelle and Norma Davis, both of New York; and six step-grandchildren.

The family received friends Monday, February 25, 2013 from 2:30 – 3 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek. The funeral was held Monday, February 25, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Stanley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

VIOLA CAGLE McNEILL SEAGROVES
Viola Cagle McNeill Seagroves, 96, died peacefully on February 21, 2013, at River Landing in Colfax. She lived a wonderful life filled with love, caring and respect for all people. Viola was born July 20, 1916 in Carthage, to parents Henry Cleveland and Laler Van Cagle. She was one of seven children, including sisters Evelyn, Beatrice, twin sister Leola, and brothers, Lindsey, Odell and Norman.

Following her High School graduation, Viola attended Appalachian State Teachers College, where she earned a teaching degree in 1939. Viola met the love of her life, Alex Lester McNeill during a college break, and they married on August 18, 1940. They moved to Pittsboro, where Viola began her teaching career in elementary school. Viola’s teaching profession spanned 34 years in the Chatham County School system. A born nurturer, Viola provided exceptional love for all of her students. She continued her relationships with them for many years, corresponding through letters and special occasion cards. She was a Charter member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority.

With great joy, Viola and Mac gave birth to sons, Phil in 1951, Don in 1952, and daughter Kaye in 1958. Kaye was a special needs child, born with Downs Syndrome, and Viola was forever devoted to her care and happiness. Viola was a wonderful mother and always put her family’s needs before her own. Viola and Mac were married for almost 42 years until his death in 1982.

In 1989 Viola remarried William “Bill” Seagroves. They had eight happy years together until his death in 1997. Bill was a true “guardian angel, ” looking after Viola and Kaye with love and devotion. Daughter Kaye developed Alzheimer’s disease in 2003. Viola was attentive to Kaye’s daily care until her death in June, 2005.

In September, 2005, Viola left Pittsboro, her home for 65 years, and moved to River Landing in Colfax, to be near family. She graciously embraced her new “home’ and immersed herself in enriching activities. She made many wonderful friends and was blessed, living her final years in a happy, caring and fulfilling environment. Viola was sustained her whole life by her faith in God. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Carthage, First Baptist Church, Pittsboro (65 years), and First Baptist Church, High Point. She also attended and enjoyed religious services at River Landing.

Survivors include sons, Phil McNeill and wife, Nancy of Colfax, Don McNeill and wife, Alise of Durham; three granddaughters, Katy McNeill Lanz and husband Matt of Pittsburgh, Pa; Leslie McNeill Thomas and husband Matt of Greensboro, Sophie McNeill of Durham; sisters-in-law, Tommie Cagle of Granite Falls and Lillie Cagle of Carthage. Viola also cherished many surviving nieces, nephews and their children.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the outstanding staff and care team at River Landing as well as Hospice of the Piedmont.

A “Celebration of Life” ceremony was held in the Multipurpose Room at River Landing, 1515 John Knox Drive, Colfax, on Sunday, February 24 at 2 p.m. A family graveside service was held February 25 at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage.

BERNICE “BILL” GRAY THOMAS
Bernice “Bill” Gray Thomas, 88, of Epps Clark Road, Siler City died Monday, February 25, 2013 at Laurels Of Chatham, Pittsboro.

Mr. Thomas was born in Lincoln County on January 19, 1925, the son of Thomas Jesse and Georgia (Jennings) Thomas. Bill was the owner of Chatham Auto Parts, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church. He was a longtime active member of the Silk Hope Ruritan Club, a past president and served for years as chairman of the ice cream committee. He was also a top fund raiser with advertisements in the annual program and truck raffle for the club. Bill was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed Nascar.

He is survived by his wife, Doris (Perry) Thomas; one daughter, Sharon Thomas Church of Asheboro; two sons, Douglas Craig Thomas and wife, Tracey of Siler City, Kenneth Ray Thomas of Siler City; two sisters, Betty Phillips of Siler City, Helen Beck and husband, Welford of Siler City; grandchildren, Kristopher Thomas of Siler City, Casey Hardin of Morehead City, Holly Sorenson of Siler City, Kimberley Church of Wilmington, Amanda Alden of Roanoke, VA; step-grandchildren, Stephanie Everhart of Siler City, Matthew Everhart of Thomasville, Alex Moody of Siler City, and seven great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church, 5016 Silk Hope-Gum Spring Road, Pittsboro, with Rev. Jason Dickerson, Dr. C. J. Bordeaux, and Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

MARIAN PHILLIPS BRIDGES
Mrs. Marian Phillips Bridges, 85, of Sanford, passed away Tuesday, (02-12-2013).

Funeral services were held Friday, (02-15-2013) at 2 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Ira Sutton, Dr. Greg Burriss, Rev. Matt Martin and Mr. Joe Liles presiding. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Charlotte, September 27, 1927 to the late Fulton Franklin Phillips and Lola King Alexander Phillips, she retired as assistant librarian with CCCC and was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Rev. Gerald Bridges; sons, Gerald Bridges, Jr. of Dallas, TX, Steve Bridges of Hampton, SC, Larry Bridges of Wilson, Samuel Bridges of Paducah, KY; daughter, Nan Bridges Hill of Wake Forest; sisters, Jean Whipple, Doris Williams, both of Charlotte; twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

KIM SIMSONSON BUTTS
Kim Simonson Butts, 61, of Sanford died Friday, (02-15-2013), at Sanford Health & Rehab.

Funeral services were held Sunday, (02-17-2013), at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Yandle officiating. Burial followed in Buffalo Cemetery.

Mrs. Butts was born in Lee County to the late William Franklin Simonson and Nellie Gaines Simonson. She was Director of Elections for Lee County for many years. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Suzanne S. Comstock and half brother, Perry Holland.

Surviving is her husband, Timothy Allen Butts of Sanford; son, Jeffrey Osborne and wife Mary of Sanford; daughter, Jessica Osborne of Sanford; brother, Bill Simonson of Sanford; half-sister, Shirley Holland Wicker of Maxton; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

WILLIAM OBIE HARMON
Mr. William Obie Harmon, 85, of Pittsboro, died Sunday, (02-17-2013) at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

The celebration of life services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (02-20-2013) at Pittsboro United Methodist Church, with Pastors Ben Alexander and Bob Wachs presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Pittsboro on September 21, 1927, Obie was the son of James Wesley Harmon and Dollie Battle Lilly Harmon. He served in the US Army in Korea; and, worked as a foreman at Kayser-Roth, then with Townsend Poultry as a supervisor before retiring. Obie was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Allene Harward Harmon; daughters, Jane Pendergrast of Chapel Hill, Diane McCarthy of Bradenton, FL.; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to either Pittsboro U.M.C., PO Box 716, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA22312.
