JOE HOLLIS FREEMAN
Joe Hollis Freeman, 69, of Goldston died Tuesday, (01-22-2013) at his residence.

The funeral was held Friday, (01-25-2013) at 11 a.m., at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Freeman was born in Barrow County, Georgia, June 8, 1943, the son of Willie “Buster” H. and Lattrell “Polly” (Smith) Freeman. He was a Baptist by faith and a retired machine operator with Tracor Aerospace. After retirement he worked for the Sanford Herald. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Vanetta F. Johnson.

He is survived by one daughter, Stephanie F. Arnold of Max Meadows, VA; sons, Joe “Joey” H. Freeman, II of Fayetteville, William “Will” Freeman of Buies Creek, Brian Freeman of Mays Landing NJ; sister, Vickie F. Millenbaugh of Goldston; brother, Barry Eugene Freeman of Sanford; nine grandchildren, and one step-great-granddaughter.
Memorials may be made to West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344 or Chatham County Council on Aging 112 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

IRIS GRAVES PARNELL
Mrs. Iris Graves Parnell, 80, of Ramseur, died Thursday, (01-24-2013).

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, (01-27-2013), at Ramseur Wesleyan Church with Rev. Tim Butcher, Rev. Leon Thompson and Rev. Gary Moger officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was born November 3, 1932 in Montgomery County to the late Samuel Richard Graves and Lucy Lucas Graves. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Parnell.

Survivors include children, Jo Ann P. Braxton of Ramseur, Mickey Parnell of Henderson, Eddie Parnell of Ramseur and Sharon P. Richardson of Shallotte; nine grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ramseur Wesleyan Church, 2038 Leonard Street, Ramseur NC 27316 or Faith Christian School, 5449 Brookhaven Road, Ramseur, NC 27316.

WILBERT HAITH
Wilbert Haith, 80, of Siler City, died Friday, (01-25-2013).
The funeral was held Sunday, (01-27-2013) at 3 p.m. at Center United Methodist Church, with Rev. Joseph Parks and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
Mr. Haith was born in Chatham County on September 14, 1932, the son of Allen L. and Anna Betty (Thomas) Haith. Wilbert was a member of Center United Methodist Church. He was the former owner/operator of S & H Oil Company, a cattle farmer and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Annie Ruth Eubanks and one brother, Lee Haith.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie (Scott) Haith; one son, Randy Haith of Charlotte; and one brother, A. Junior Haith of Snow Camp.

Memorials may be made to a church of donor’s choice or Community Home Care and Hospice, 108 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

CAROLYN B. MOORE
Carolyn Brown Moore, 56, of Bennett, died Friday, (01-25-2013) at Peak Resources-Pinelake in Carthage.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (01-29-2013), at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, with Rev. Mark Strickland officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.

Carolyn was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of the Pleasant Grove Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Diffie and Dorothy Brown, brothers, Tides Ray Brown and William Wilse Brown.

Surviving is a daughter, Amanda Moore Boggs of Lakeview; sisters, Eva Mae Brown, Nora Lee Ellis, both of Bennett; and a grandchild.

JESSIE WADDELL WINSTEAD
Mrs. Jessie Waddell Winstead, 88, of Sanford, died Friday, (01-25-2013), at Central Carolina Hospital.

Graveside services were held Monday, (01-28-2013), at 2 p.m. at Buffalo Cemetery with Rev. Gilbert McDowell officiating

Mrs. Winstead was born October 2, 1924, in Harnett County, to the late Alexander Waddell and Ruberta Cameron Waddell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Evander C. Winstead; brothers, Bailey Waddell, Walter Waddell, Theodore “Ted” Waddell, John Waddell; and sisters, Alice Garner and Lilla Blue.

She was a graduate of Benhaven High School and a member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church. She was co-owner and operator of Winstead’s Grocery.

There are no immediate survivors.

SPENCER BAXLEY GIBSON
Mr. Spencer Baxley Gibson, 60 of Sanford, died Sunday, (01-27-2013).

Funeral services were held Tuesday, (01-29-2013), at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hunter Preston officiating. Burial followed at Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mr. Gibson was born September 30, 1952, in Lee County, to the late Allen Eugene Gibson and Sue Efird Gibson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Gibson. He had worked at Goodwin Trucking Company.

Surviving is a daughter, Jennifer Gibson; a brother, Bill Gibson, both of Sanford; and one grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Sue Gibson Nursing Scholarship in care of CCCC Foundation, Kelly Drive, Sanford, NC or the American Cancer Society.

DEBRA LYNN MORA BLICKENSTAFF
Debra Lynn Mora Blickenstaff, 54, of Pittsboro died (01-28-2013) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

At Debra’s request, cremation will take place with services that will be private.

A Sandusky, Ohio native, Debra was born March 3, 1958 to Frank and Wylea Mora. She operated a home day care.

Surviving are her husband, Larry; her daughter, Misty Green of Hixon, TN; three grandchildren; and her brother, David Mora.

LOUISE ADELINE LANNING MORRISON
Mrs. Louise Adeline Lanning Morrison, 102, formerly of Shelby, died Saturday, (01-25-2013) at Pittsboro Christian Village.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Pittsboro Christian Village on Saturday, (02-02-2013) at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be at 1:45 PM.

Mrs. Morrison was born near Asheville, on July 7, 1910, the daughter of Lucius Alexander Lanning and Rachel Patton Lanning. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Morrison, her parents, and siblings.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pittsboro Christian Village.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

THOMAS C. ALSTON, JR.
Thomas C. “Cut” Alston, Jr, of Cary, died Sunday (01-27-2013).

A memorial service will be held at Apex United Methodist Church, Thursday, (01-31-2013) at 2 p.m..

Tom was born to Thomas Cheatham and Mitty Y. Alston in Louisburg, May 22, 1927. He was a veteran of the U S Army, attended Louisburg College, and was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College. He held an M.Ed. from UNC Chapel Hill. He was a teacher and principal in Chatham and Wake County. He joined the N.C. State Board of Education in 1968 where he was a supervisor of teacher allotment until his retirement. He was a long time volunteer at the Dorcas Ministries of Cary.

He was predeceased by his wife, Christine S. Alston and two sisters, Viola A. Mangum and Jennie A. Watson.

The family will receive friends after the service. Interment will follow at a later date in Siler City.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Apex United Methodist Church, 100 South Hughes St., Apex, NC. 27502; or the Dorcas Ministries Building Fund, 187 High House Road, Cary, NC. 27511.

MICHAEL RICHARD KUZMA
Michael Richard Kuzma, 65, of Asheboro, died Thursday, (01-24-2013) at UNC Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Kuzma was born May 11, 1947 in Johnson City, NY.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Kuzma; daughters, Nicole L. Conners of Asheboro, Carrie Kuzma of Scottsville, NY; mother, Helen Kuzma, of Asheboro; sister, Deanne M. Moran of Geneva, FL; brother, Dr. Gary R. Kuzma of Greensboro, and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Kuzma.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

THEODORE JACKSON HAYES
Mr. Theodore Jackson Hayes, 75, of Goldston died Sunday, (01-13-2013) at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held Thursday (01-17-2013) at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Harvey Alston officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A member of Roberts Chapel Church, he served as trustee, church clerk, and on the usher board. He was a member of Goldston Star Lodge #684, Morning Star Chapter #594, and was employed with Norfolk and Southern.

Survivors include son, Ralph Hayes of Atlanta, GA, Robert Hayes of Denver, CO; daughters, Kimberly Hayes-Allen, Joy Hayes, both of Greensboro; stepmother, Arletha M. Lash; stepdaughter, Denise Turner Farar; brother, Everett Louis Hayes of Goldston; sister, Ida Griffin of Greensboro; and nine grandchildren.

BESSIE MAE ALSTON SCURLOCK
Mrs. Bessie Mae Alston Scurlock, 83, of Pittsboro died Thursday (01-17-2013) at her home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (01-22-2013) at Alston Chapel U.H. Church with Elder Jerry Powell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Scurlock was a member of Alston Chapel U.H. Church. She had worked for Mathiesen Clinic and Joint Orange-Chatham Community Action.

Surviving are sons, Timothy Scurlock, Adrian Scurlock, both of Pittsboro; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Alston of Pittsboro; sisters, Mary Henry Farrar, Patricia Ann Alston, both of Pittsboro, and Elrita Rodgers of Greensboro.

WILLIAM LOGAN HONAKER
William Logan Honaker, 59 of Sanford, died Sunday (01-27-2013) in Princeton, KY.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (01-31-2013) at the Smith Funeral Home in Moncure with Rev. Garland Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Moncure United Methodist Church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

He was a veteran of the US Army and a truck driver with Lumbee Trucking. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Brenda Cadero.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Saunders Honaker of Sanford; daughters, daughters, Heather Honaker of Southern Pines, Therresa Honaker of Maryland, Danielle Honaker of Maryland; stepchildren, Brenda Kathleen Raper of Sanford, Theresa Bass of Liberty; sister, Linda Duncan of Aberdeen; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials donations be made to Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 138, Moncure, NC 27559 for funeral expenses.

MARY ISABELLE FERGUSON FOWLER
Mary Isabelle Ferguson Fowler, 85, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013. She was born December 4, 1927 in Chatham County to the late Isaac Minter “Ike” and Labaron Josephine Ferguson. She loved her children and grandchildren. Mary loved her church, Nashville United Methodist, gardening, flowers and cooking. She spent most of her life attending to her late husband Joe William “Buddy” Fowler. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David Fowler, sister, Louise Fowler, and a brother, Junior Ferguson.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two children, Anne Fowler Watkins (Joe) of Florence, SC, Ike Fowler (Leigh) of Nashville; two sisters, Nelle Decker of Binghamton, NY, Nancy F. Harris of Siler City; brother, Tommy Ferguson of Siler City; five grandchildren, Brooke Watkins, Erin Watkins Johnson, Hope Fowler Bailey, Jody Fowler, Brian Fowler, three great-grandchildren, Dalton Bailey, Lauren Marie Bailey and Isabelle Parks Johnson.

Memorial services were held Friday, January 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Nashville United Methodist Church with Pastor Ralph A. Brown.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the to the Alzheimer’s Association at 3737 Glenwood Avenue, Suite 100, Raleigh, NC 27612; or Nashville United Methodist Church, 209 East Washington Street, Nashville, NC.

Arrangements are entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home and Cremations, 1052 South First Street, Nashville, NC 27856; or Original Free Will Baptist Church, 3745 Ormondsville Road, Ayden, NC 28513.

JOHN WILLIS “BILLY” HATLEY
Mr. John Willis “Billy” Hatley, 82, of Orange Grove Road in Chapel Hill, peacefully passed away January 22, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Hatley was born in Chatham County on December 24, 1930, the son of the late John Manley Hatley and Pauline Lassiter Hatley. Through a chance meeting in a taxicab, Billy gazed upon the former Daisy Mae Hunt and was certain that it was “love at first sight.” Billy was a hard working plumber who retired from Knight Construction. Billy had a penchant for eating sweets, playing cards and listening to bluegrass music. Some of his favorite television past-times were watching westerns or wrestling matches. On any given day, you might find Billy hanging out at Al’s Garage and it was a rare occasion that he was apart from his cat, Tifa.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Daisy Hatley; two daughters, Vickie Ann Hatley and her husband, Rex, of Georgia, Deborah Lynn Hatley of Pittsboro; three grandchildren, Richard Brown, Crystal Waddell, Teresa Tackett and six great-grandchildren, Kevin, Michael, Devin, Hailey, William and Tinsley. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hatley was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine Meacham and his grandson, Michael Brown.

The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Pittsboro, with Pastor John Covington and Rev. Gail Smith of UNC Hospice, officiating. The family received friends at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Arrangements for Mr. John “Billy” Hatley were under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.
