MAXINE BOWDEN
Mrs. Maxine Bowden, 96, of Siler City died Thursday, (07-11-2013) at Genesis Health Care, Siler City . Funeral services will be held Friday, (07-19-2013) at 3 p.m. at Corinth AME Zion Church where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. at the church. Survivors include her children, Gwennette Johnson, Vernell Wright, Mildred Stokes; brothers, Enos Graves, Alfred Graves, Sr.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

OTTIS CARL PRICE
Ottis Carl Price, 78, of Silk Hope Road, Siler City , died Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Price was born in Columbus County on February 17, 1935, the son of Willie Lee and Martha (Ray) Price. He attended Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and retired, after 31 years of service, as a salesman with Elanco Products, Inc., a division of Eli Lilly. In retirement he enjoyed farming, gardening, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. Carl was a veteran of the Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers. Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Betty (Perry) Price; two sons, Kenneth Ray Price and wife Pamela of DeFuniak Springs, FL, James Carl Price and wife Lori of Greensboro, NC; brother, Billy L. Price and wife Ann of Roxboro, NC; grandchildren, Payton, Alexander, Jacob, Nicholas, Avan; and many loving nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 3631 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City with Rev. Jason Dickerson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o David Smith, 157 Sylvan School Road, Snow Camp, NC 27349. Smith & Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

ETHELDA PHILLIPS STUMPF
Ethelda Phillips Stumpf, 81, of 7490 Siler City-Glendon Road, Bear Creek, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Bob Wachs, Rev. Roger Thomas, and Rev. Scott Walker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Ms. Stumpf was a Chatham County native and a retired nurse from Chatham Hospital, where she worked for many years. She was part owner of Southern Supreme Fruitcake Company, where she loved coming up with new candy items. Her passion in life was caring for her family, friends and everybody she came in contact with. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Merle Stumpf. She is survived by daughters, Dawn Stumpf, of the home, Bonnie Reynolds of Carthage, Jamie Brady and husband Rodney of Bear Creek; son; Douglas Merle Stumpf of the home; grandchildren, Holly Reynolds and fiance’ Jeff Wunsch of Aberdeen, Chad Reynolds and wife Christina of PA., Jordan Brady and Aaron Brady, both of Bear Creek; sisters, Berta Lou Scott and husband Hoyte of Bear Creek, Sue Ann Farlow and husband Frank of Raleigh; brothers, Billy Joe Phillips and Garry Phillips, both of Bear Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Friday, July 12, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, and other times at her home. Joyce-Brady Chapel served the Stumpf family.

LUTHER CRAIG BUSH, JR. (Major USAF, Retired)
Luther Craig Bush, Jr., (Major USAF Ret), age 76, of Silk Hope Road, Siler City passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 at UNC Hospitals. He was a native of Roanoke, Virginia and the oldest of four children born to the late Luther Bush, Sr. and Nannie Bush. Luther, Jr. was a career military officer in the United States Air Force where he served in Texas, Florida, Alaska, Delaware, Mississippi, Alabama, Hawaii and New Jersey stateside as well as Taiwan and Vietnam as a radar observer in fighter jets and later as a navigator in cargo planes. He was married to Carol Johnson Bush for fifty-four years. Their two daughters are Colleen B. Spencer of Vancover, WA. and Sylvia B. Tastet of Apex, NC. Grandchildren are Shane and Troy Spencer and Dylan, Liam and Olivia Tastet. Sons-in-law are Lance Tastet and Tom Spencer. Luther is survived by one sister, Brenda Willis of Bolivia, NC, and one brother, James R. Bush of Bent Mt, VA. He was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald L. Bush. Luther, Carol and daughters came to Siler City and made their home here in 1976 upon retirement from the Air Force. He was a trained appliance repair technician and owned Bush-Cockman Appliance in Siler City before opening and operating Bush TV and Appliances and Bush Video Store in Liberty until 2001. Luther was a member of First Baptist Church of Siler City. Graveside funeral service was conducted by Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Dave Pierceall at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Chatham Memorial Parkon Hwy 64. Family and close friends were invited to the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344. Smith & Buckner is in charge of funeral arrangements. No formal visitation was held.

ANNIE MARGARET MANESS PHILLIPS
Annie Margaret Maness Phillips, 86, of Siler City, passed peacefully, Monday, July 15, 2013 at the home of her son. Mrs. Phillips was born in Randolph County on February 28, 1927, the daughter of Millard and Lula (Hicks) Maness. She worked in textiles and later retired after serving many years as a nursing assistant. She remained a longstanding member of Loves Creek Baptist Church from the age of 18. She was known for being an honest, selfless woman and faithfully dedicated to her family and her Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. B. Phillips, Sr.; her parents, brothers, J. C. and James Allen Maness; sisters, Eula Darr and Lessie Mote. The funeral will be held at Loves Creek Baptist Church, Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 2 p.m with Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be in the Loves Creek Baptist Church cemetery. She is survived by one son, Thomas L. Phillips of Siler City; step-son W. B. Phillips, Jr. and wife Verna of Ramseur; grandsons, Tony L. Phillips and Sherrill T. Phillips and wife Chasity of Siler City; great-grandchildren Chastity Ryser, Megan Johnson, Christian Phillips and Lily Phillips; brothers, Charlie and Tom Maness of Snow Camp, Earl and Gurney Maness of Liberty, Millard Maness, Jr. of Siler City; sister, Doris Guthrie of Siler City; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a dear friend and former daughter-in-law, Betty Phillips. To my family and friends, “I will forever love you all.” Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family.

JANE McCULLOCH BLAIR
Jane McCulloch Blair died peacefully at home on Saturday, July 13, 2013 after a very brief illness. She was born May 24, 1922 in Elizabethtown, NC, the daughter of Elizabethtown City Attorney and Bladen County State Senator E. F. McCulloch and Jessie Lee Sugg McCulloch, former Publisher and Editor of the Bladen Journal. She graduated from Elizabethtown High School and attended the former Woman’s College of the University of NC in Greensboro, now UNC-G. Jane was devoted to her family and especially delighted in her grandchildren and their accomplishments. Her grandchildren, Ben and Blakeney, loved to visit “Oma” and loved the special treats she would cook for them. She was a past member of the United Methodist Women’s organization and assisted for many years with the Altar Guild and communion service. She also was a past member of the D.A.R. Foremost among her passions and talents were gardening and golfing. Jane especially loved to transplant flowers and plants from her childhood home to her yard in Siler City. She was an active member of the Ladies Golf Association at Siler City Country Club for many years and relished participating in golf tournaments across the state. Jane was thrilled when she hit her first hole-in-one. She was also an ardent supporter of the UNC-CH Tar Heels and avidly followed Carol in a football and basketball. She is survived by her cherished family, daughter, Janet Lee Blair; grandson, Benjamin Mott Gallahan and granddaughter, Blakeney McCulloch Gallahan ofAtlanta, GA; sister, the Rev. Lillian McCulloch Taylor ofCary, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Mott P. Blair III; son-in-law, Ronald N. Gallahan; sisters, Catharine Clark Strand, Julia Clark Calhoun, and Nancy McCulloch Bridger; brothers, Edgar F. McCulloch Jr. and Norman B. McCulloch; and nephews, Austin Strand and Bruce McCulloch. A graveside memorial service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City on Friday, July 19 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Clyde Denny and Rev. Dr. Frances Taylor Gench officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to either First United Methodist Church of Siler City or to the NC Arts Incubator in Siler City.

BREANA EMMALEIGH LaDRONKA
Infant Breana Emmaleigh LaDronka, died Saturday, (06-29-2013) in Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, (07-06-2013) at Corner Stone Baptist Church, with Pastor David Thomas officiating. Surviving are her parents, Bradley Daniel-James LaDronka and Jessica Talley LaDronka of the home; maternal step-grandfather and grandmother, Jerry and Denise Thomas of Goldston, maternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Johnny and Angela Talley of Denton, and paternal grandparents, Mark and Leeann LaDronka of Grand Haven, MI.

DORIS RHODES DOUGLAS
Mrs. Doris Rhodes Douglas, 64, of Sanford, died Sunday, (07-07-2013) at the First Health Hospice House in Moore County. Graveside services were held Wednesday, (07-10-2013) at 11 a.m. at New Life Fellowship Church cemetery with Rev. Ralph Douglas officiating Mrs. Douglas was born in Lee County on October 11, 1948 to the late Ayden Rhodes and Minder Richardson Rhodes. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Rhodes. She was a sales associate for Kerr Drugs. Mrs. Douglas is survived by her husband, Paul Douglas; brothers, Thomas Wayne Rhodes of Clayton, and Harold Steve Rhodes of Sanford.

PHEBE WILLETT KNOLL
Phebe Willett Knoll, 75, of Palm Harbor, FL died Wednesday (07-03-2013) in North Myrtle Beach, SC. A memorial service was held Wednesday, (07-10-2013), at 1 p.m. at Bridges – Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford. Burial followed at Buffalo Cemetery. Mrs. Knoll was born October 28, 1937 in Lee County, to the late Harvey and Rachel Willett. She was owner and operator of the Rainbow-K Florist in Palm Harbor, FL for 31 years. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters – Kate, Kemp, Max, James, Harvey, Robert, Sylvia, and Andy. Survivors include brother, John Willett and sisters Erna and Myrtle; her husband of 52 years, Roger Allen Knoll; son, Michael Knoll of Holiday, FL; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. DAVID WALLACE
Mr. David Wallace, 51, of Bennett, died Wednesday, (07-03-2013) at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA. Funeral services were held Tuesday, (07-09-2013) at 11 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church where he was a member with Dr. Neal Jackson and Rev. Ben Hurley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Wallace lived in Chatham County and was a truck driver for many years. He was preceded in death by his Father, Edward Wallace. Survivors include a daughter, Lauren Wallace of Mebane, son, Brandon Wallace of Southern Pines; mother, Lucy Shields Wallace of the home; sisters, Teresa Bouldin of Seagrove, and Audrey Cornelius of Lillington.

DENNIS PARKER JORDAN, JR.
Dennis Parker Jordan, Jr., 73, of Bear Creek died Thursday, (06-27-2013) at home. Funeral services were held Sunday (06-30-2013) at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church with Rev. David Thomas officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Jordan was born in Forsyth County, January 15, 1940, the son of Dennis Parker and Hattie (Gregory) Jordan. He was an Army veteran, employed by Chatham County as a mechanic and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Jordan, sister, Frances Morrison, and a grandson, Stephen Gaines. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris (Brewer)Jordan; daughter, Denise Jordan Gaines; sisters, Linda Hesselmeyer of Ramseur, Peggy Hall and Judy Warren, both of Sanford; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 108 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.
