Mr. Daniel W. Holmes

EFLAND - Mr. Daniel Warren Holmes, 91, of 3101 Chestnut Ridge Church Road, died at 11:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Edna Squires Holmes, who survives, and the son of Mr. William B. Holmes and Mrs. Maggie Jones Holmes, both deceased. He was a retired superintendent for general construction work. He was a member of Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church. He was a member of Hillsborough Masonic Lodge and Hillsborough Eagle Lodge No. 19.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Walker of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Mr. Charles B. Holmes of Efland; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Scott and Mrs. Lula Rowland, both of Mebane; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Harry Wade Holmes.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Bissett, pastor. A masonic graveside service will be conducted in the church cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, 3521 Chestnut Ridge Church Road, Efland, N.C. 27243.

Mrs. Hattie Thompson

HURDLE MILLS - Mrs. Hattie Mae 'Pat' Crabtree Thompson, 71, of 188 Layne Clayton Road, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at her home.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Clarence Thompson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Archie Frank Crabtree and Mrs. Minnie Susan Brown Crabtree, both deceased. She was retired from Mebane Hosiery and was a member of Old Lea Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. Larry Thompson of Hillsborough; a daughter, Ms. Barbara Walters of Hurdle Mills; five sisters, Ms. Zelma Brown and Ms. Edna Fitts, both of Hurdle Mills, Ms. Sadie Belle McCullough of Mebane, Ms. Doris Crabtree and Ms. Mearlene Hubbard, both of Roxboro; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brooks and White Chapel by the Rev. James Albert and the Rev. Bobby Tate. Burial will be in Cooper Cemetery.

The family will be at Brooks and White Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 Wednesday evening and at other times at the home of her daughter, Ms. Barbara Walters, 225 Wolfe Road, Hurdle Mills.

Mrs. Daisy S. Tate

GRAHAM - Mrs. Daisy Simmons Tate, 87, of 14-B Cates Circle Drive, died at 2:12 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Alamance Health Care Center after several years of failing health, five weeks critical.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Henry Tate and the daughter of Mr. Elisha Simmons and Mrs. Martha Rice Simmons, both deceased. She was a retired cook at Western Steak House and a member of Friendly Lane Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Lewis of Graham and Mrs. Dollie Everett of Marietta, Ga.; two sons, Mr. J.L. Gilliam of California and Mr. James H. Tate Jr. of Graham; four stepdaughters, Mrs. Marie Gibson of Reidsville, Mrs. Jackie Sharpe and Mrs. Alice Stuckey, both of Graham, and Mrs. Mattie Terrell of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Grace Shambley of Elon College, Mrs. Pearl Bowman, Mrs. Gladys Page and Mrs. Frances Gilliam, all of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Felix Simmons of Henderson; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Danny Miles, pastor of Friendly Lane Baptist Church. Burial will be in Stoney Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mr. Samuel Mitchell

BURLINGTON - Mr. Samuel Mitchell, 82, of 1266 N.C. 49 North, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at the Life Care Center in Banner Elk after several months of failing health.

A native of Cottage Grove, Ala., he was the husband of Mrs. Lillian Mebane Carter Mitchell, who survives, and the son of Mr. John D. Leonard Mitchell Sr. and Mrs. Carolina Howell Mitchell, both deceased. He was a member of Green Level United Church of Christ.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice C. Bigelow of Green Level and Mrs. Bettie Carolyn Shanks of St. Louis; two sons, Mr. James R. Carter of Burlington and Mr. Andy Slaughter of Bloomfield, Conn.; a sister, Mrs. Leona M. Moon of Akron, Ohio; a brother, Mr. John D. Leonard Mitchell Jr. of Melville, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven sisters, Mrs. Winnie M. Coggins, Mrs. Marie Kelly, Mrs. Zelma Wright, Mrs. Mae Florence Mack, Mrs. Julie Belle Oden, Mrs. Elizabeth Butts and Miss Evelyn Mitchell; and five brothers, Mr. Claude Leonard Mitchell, Mr. John W. Mitchell, Mr. Leroy Mitchell, Mr. Norman Mitchell and Mr. James B. Mitchell.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Green Level United Church of Christ by the Rev. Coslow E. Holt, pastor, the Rev. Eli A. Burton and the Rev. Walter James. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 7:30 Thursday evening and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Margaret H. Cole

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Margaret Holmes Cole, 79, of 409 E. Willowbrook Drive, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after one year of failing health.

A native of Danville, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. Joseph W. 'Joe' Cole. She was a member of St. John's New Mission United Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jo Ella Cole Jordan of Graham and Ms. Kay Cole of Charlotte; three sons, Mr. Thomas W. 'Tommy' Cole of Burlington, Mr. J. Wayne Cole and Mr. William H. 'Billy' Cole, both of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Janet Kessler of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Mr. Lawrence Holmes of Tucson, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Tim Allen, pastor of St. John's New Mission United Church of Christ, and the Rev. Paul Stennett. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson funeral service in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Home, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mr. James Tate

GRAHAM - Mr. James Preston Tate, 79, of 403 W. Market St., died at 1:07 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after four years of failing health, four days critical.

A native of Asheville, he was the husband of Mrs. Adell Carden Tate, who survives, and the son of Mr. Edward Allen Tate and Mrs. Margaret Lipe Tate, both deceased. He was retired from Copeland Fabrics.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Peggy Dimont of Burlington, Mrs. Nancy Dodson of Haw River, Mrs. Sandra Slaton of Mebane and Mrs. Sue Emerson of Graham; three sons, Mr. Fred York, Mr. Gerald York and Mr. Richard York, all of Burlington; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Tim Taylor, pastor of Power Line Church of the Nazarene.

The family will be at the home.

McClure Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John B. Shue

GRAHAM - Mr. John B. 'J.B.' Shue, 69, of 110 Franklin St., died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center after two years of failing health, four weeks critical.

A native of Graham, he was the husband of Mrs. Juanita Roberts Shue, who survives, and the son of Mr. John B. Shue Sr. and Mrs. Lou Clapp Shue, both deceased. He was a retired plant manager and human-relations director for Regent Lighting. He was a member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Friendship Sunday school class.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Miss Beverly Dean Shue of Graham; a son, Mr. John Warren Shue Sr. of Graham; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Miss Janice Leah Shue.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Andrews Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. Tommy Willis, the Rev. Tom Worley and Dr. Charles Foushee. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6:30 to 9 Friday evening, and at other times at the home of the daughter, Miss Beverly Dean Shue, 509 E. Harden St., Graham.

Emily K. Smith

Nathaniel G. Smith

HIGH POINT - Emily Kathleen Smith died Nov. 9, 1997, and Nathaniel Graham Smith, died Nov. 10, 1997, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.

They were the infant daughter and son of Mr. D. Gregg Smith and Mrs. Martha Ginn Smith of 4000 Red Oak Court.

Survivors other than the parents include grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Ginn of Burlington and Mr. and Mrs. Donald G. Smith of Phafftown; great- grandmother, Mrs. Pauline S. Rivers of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Coetta H. Norman of East Bend.

Private services will be held.

Memorials may be made to Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit General Fund, c / o Patient Services Department, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

Rich and Thompson funeral service in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joel H. Garland

MEBANE - A memorial service for Mr. Joel Howard 'Jody' Garland will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the building back of the Swepsonville Fire Department.

The memorial service will include an antique car display by his friends and a display of awards received by Garland.

Survivors include his father, Mr. George Garland of Mebane; and three sisters, Ms. Vickie Garland of Greensboro, Ms. Denise Garland Hooft and Ms. Tracie Smith, both of Burlington.

Mr. London Glover

SNOW CAMP - Mr. London Glover, 82, of 7134 Lindley Mill Road died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A native of Chatham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Eleanor Glover, who survives. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and was a farmer. He was a member of Evan's Chapel Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Hallie Parrish of Graham; six sons, Mr. James Glover of Burlington, Mr. Walter Glover, Mr. Bill Glover and Mr. Kemp Glover, all of Graham, Mr. Willie Glover of Snow Camp and Mr. Darnell Glover of Roanoke, Va.; seven sisters, Mrs. Ida Meadows and Mrs. Mary Graves, both of Greensboro, Mrs. Anna Isley of Ramseur, Miss Lois Glover of Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Genevig Lassister of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Nannie Hooker of Durham and Mrs. Loretta Rush of Siler City; a brother, Mr. Weldon Glover of Long Island; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evan's Chapel Church by the Rev. Riley Headon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the church from 6 to 7 Friday evening.

Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ivson Foust

MEBANE - Mr. Ivson Foust, 82, of 133 James Walker Road, died at 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at White Oak Manor in Burlington after several months of failing health.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Annie Mae Moore Foust, who survives, and the son of Mr. Ed Foust and Mrs. Sudie Williams Foust, both deceased. He was a retired employee of White's Furniture Co. and was a member of Archies Grove United Church of Christ.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann F. Smith of Rochester, N.Y.; two sons, Mr. Ivson Thomas Foust of Greensboro and Mr. Roger Elwood Foust of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Mary F. Wyatt of Green Level; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Archies Grove United Church of Christ by the Rev. William H. Carr, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 7:30 Friday evening.
