Amanda Denton Brantley, 76, of Middlesex, died Saturday morning, June 25, 2005, in Wilson. funeral service was Tuesday, June 28, at Stoney Hill Baptist Church. Burial was at Bailey Town Cemetery.
She was born July 12, 1928, in Nash County, daughter of the late Miley and Sallie B. Denton, and was the widow of Warren Gus Brantley.
Surviving: children, Pam and Norman Spencer of Illinois, Greg and Nancy Brantley of Zebulon, Wallace Brantley of Fuquay-Varina, Nick Brantley of the home, Keith Brantley and Cindy Williams, James Brantley, and David and Kelly Brantley, all of Zebulon; sisters, Martha Bryant of Middlesex, Hettie Belle Brantley of Zebulon; brother, Miley “Toolie” Denton of Zebulon; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Nancy Griffin Bridgers, 84, of Pinetops, died Friday, June 24, 2005. Graveside service was Sunday, June 26, at the Bridgers family cemetery near Pinetops.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Vertis Bridgers.
Surviving: daughters, Carol B. Lewis and husband Wayne of Wake Forest, Marilyn B. Forbes and husband Dickie of Zebulon; sons, Benjamin L. Bridgers of Fountain, Vertis Darrell Bridgers of Pinetops; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Lottie P. Alford
Lottie Pulley Alford, 81, of Zebulon, died Monday, June 20, 2005. funeral service was Thursday, June 23, at Social Plains Baptist Church, Zebulon. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was born in Wake County, daughter of the late Sadie and Edgar Pulley. She graduated from Wakelon High School and was retired from Square D with 18 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darnell Alford; and great-granddaughter, Whitney Griswold. She had enjoyed sharing the recent news that she was cancer-free.
Surviving: daughter, Sandra A. Edwards and husband Jerry of Zebulon; granddaughters, Dana Griswold and husband Ken, and Gina Temple and husband Woody, all of Zebulon; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner Griswold, and Joshua and Chase Temple, all of Zebulon; son-in-law, Walter Richardson and friend Linda Moss of Zebulon.

Dorothy Atkinson S. Smith
Dorothy Atkinson Smith Smith, 92, of Mayview Convalescent Center, Raleigh, died peacefully Saturday, June 25, 2005. Memorial service was Tuesday, June 28, at Samaria Baptist Church, Raleigh.
She was born at home on Marsh Creek Road in Wake County December 27, 1912.
Her parents, Frank Rufus Smith and Ethel Mae Atkinson Smith, were tobacco farmers.
She graduated from Knightdale School and briefly attended secretarial school before being employed in 1934 as a secretary with the U.S. Bureau of Animal Industry.
On April 22, 1933, she was married to John Calvin “Jack” Smith.
She had been a member of Samaria Baptist Church since 1939, and was elected to the board of deacons in 1973 and 1985.
She began full-time work with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina in 1965, working in the Sunday school, stewardship and annuity departments.
She also at various times served as organist and as church secretary for Samaria, Bethlehem, Knightdale, Hillcrest and Carolina Pines Baptist churches, and in 1960 was elected as a deacon of Knightdale Baptist Church.
In retirement, she volunteered with the Raleigh Baptist Association and for many years as a reading tutor at Bugg Elementary School.
She was a swimming competitor and award winner in the N.C. Senior Games, and in 1985 was nominated for the YWCA’s Academy of Women Fitness/Recreation Award.
She was predeceased by her husband; sisters, Mae Smith Edwards and Elsalee Smith Poole; and brother, Douglas Frank Smith.
Surviving: sons, John Calvin Smith Jr. and Stephen Theodore Smith, both of Raleigh; grandchildren, Judy, Jason, Shelley, Eleanor, Patricia; daughter-in-law, Rachel R. Smith; many nieces and nephews, including her beloved nephew Clifford Poole.

Ruth Fuller Winstead, 91, of Bunn, died Wednesday night, June 22, 2005. funeral service was Sunday, June 26, at Bunn United Methodist Church. Burial was at Bunn Cemetery.
She was born July 25, 1913, the daughter of the late Thomas David and Martha Elizabeth Alford Fuller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Winstead; and son, Ralph Winstead. She was a lifelong member of Bunn United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her church, friends and neighbors, sewing, quilting, and gardening.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Billie Loyd of Bunn; son and daughter-in-law, David and Nina Winstead of Hamlet; daughter-in-law, Donna Winstead of Bunn; granddaughters, Jackie Eldridge and husband Bill, Connie Lawhorn and husband Tony; grandsons, Steve Loyd and wife Liz, Kent Winstead and wife Beth, and Craig Winstead, all of Bunn, Mike Loyd and wife Carol of Louisburg, Mark Winstead and wife Kristine of Columbus, Ga.; 13 great-grandchildren.
