Ruth LaVerne Jones McCullen
April 21, 1936 - April 9, 2018

Ruth LaVerne Jones McCullen, 81, resident of Oak Ridge community near Mount Olive, passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, April 9, 2018 at The Laurels of Pender at Burgaw, N.C.

Mrs. McCullen is survived by her children and spouses, Michael and Rita McCullen and Julian McCullen, all of the Oak Ridge community, and Teresa M. and Jerry James of Rocky Point; her beloved Chihuahua companion, “Angel, ” of the home; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Harold McCullen; her parents, Ira W. and Hettie H. Jones; a sister, Gaynelle Jones Outlaw; and two grandsons, Austin McCullen and Robert McCullen.

Mom was born icon April 21, 1936 at Mount Olive. She loved each of her children and many grandchildren as individuals and loved big family meals. Mom was a wonderful and loving mother right up to the time of death, inquiring and calling each of her children to insure they were safe. Mom always encouraged us to pursue our dreams and desires, and to love one another.

Mom loved the color of red, hummingbirds, the squirrels, and her friends and family. She enjoyed growing fresh vegetables when she was able, and enjoyed making us all quilts in her later years. She always loved Jesus Christ and in her last days, called upon God numerous times and said she was ready to “go home.” Mom was a kind and gentle person who loved spending time with family and friends.

Please remember I am who I am because mom was who she was. Be proud of who you are because I was. Please keep your mind busy as it is the devil’s playground, called “Alzeheimers.” Mom sang “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, ” to us and the grandchildren when we were young….what a comfort….this is not goodbye….just I love you until we join you. Our mother was our best friend, mentor, and our hearts.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 11, at 5 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with pastor Coy Brock officiating, followed by visitation. Burial will be Thursday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mount Olive. The family will also be receiving friends at the home of Mrs. McCullen. Condolences may be sent to 94 Fall Brook Lane, Rocky Point, NC 28457.

The family would like to thank Vidant Home Health of Kenansville for numerous months of excellent care, and The Laurels of Pender in Burgaw for their dedication and care of mom and her comfort during her last days on the 100 hall. These are great caregivers and loved mom more than we can express.

Mom will be missed by many and loved forever.

A Tyndall service.

Ben M. Colson

Benjamin Morgan (Ben) Colson, 91, Mount Olive resident, went to meet his Lord Sunday afternoon, April 15, 2018.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Clifton Colson; a son-in-law, James Clark Dail; two brothers; and two sisters.

Mr. Colson’s life will be remembered in a service to be held Wednesday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Tim Snyder will officiate, with family remembrances to be shared by grandson Jason Dail. Following the service, the family will remain in the sanctuary to receive friends. Remembering Mr. Colson for his loving spirit and kind-heartedness while he was among us, that notion of generosity followed him in death as he lovingly bequeathed his body to medical research at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
