Margaret Jean McCullen Shelton
December 24, 1935 - November 22, 2017

Margaret Jean McCullen Shelton, 81, of the Dudley area, passed away Wednesday morning, November 22, 2017, at her residence.

She had been employed as a seamstress at Mount Olive Sportswear prior to becoming disabled.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Walter McCullen and Annie Pearl Wiggins Taylor; two brothers, Lawrence McCullen and Jasper Taylor, Jr.; and three sisters, Ann Reddish, Marie McCullen, and Yvonne Brogden.

She is survived by her husband, Edward L. Shelton, of the home; a daughter, Gail Davis Hargrove of Dudley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald M. and Sheila Davis of Dudley, and Don W. and Marsha Davis of Santan Valley, Arizona; two sisters, Carlene Calhoun of Arizona and Grace Bateman of Florida; five brothers, George Taylor and Lavelle Taylor, both of Scott's Store, Ronnie Taylor of Clinton, Virgil Taylor of Kenansville, and Chestley Taylor of Calypso; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren; and a special friend of the family, Ray Martin of Goldsboro.

Funeral services will be Sunday, November 26, at 3 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Daughtry officiating, followed by burial in the Price/Wiggins Cemetery near Scott's Store.

Visitation will be at the funeral home during the hour before the service, and at other times, at the home of George "Poly" Taylor, Tram Road, Mount Olive.

Louise Best Hatch
May 5, 1926 - December 10, 2017

Mrs. Louise Best Hatch, long time Mount Olive resident, passed away Sunday night, December 10, 2017 at the age of 91.

Having been raised up in Calypso Baptist Church and baptized there, she became a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive many years ago. Here, she sang in the choir and offered her time and talents in many capacities through the years. She had been a member of the Mount Olive Business and Professional Women's group and was named as its Lady of the Year some years ago. She enjoyed travel and in later years, her association with the Mount Olive Senior Center where she truly enjoyed playing her hand at bean bag baseball.

She attended Peace College and later received a master's degree in education from East Carolina University. Her career in education began as teacher at Grantham and Brogden Schools, then as principal at Seven Springs School, culminating with a position in the central office of Wayne County Public Schools.

Mrs. Hatch is survived by a son, Joe Hatch of Mount Olive and Roanoke Rapids; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Rob Blount of Petersburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Meredith B. Cherry and husband, Andrew, of Austin, Texas, and Paige Blount of Stanford, Va.; and a great-grandson, Lucas Cherry.

The family extends a special note of appreciation to Angie Sides for exemplary care and committment to the needs of Mrs. Hatch during the last several months.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Ray Hatch; her parents, Charles Russell Best and Leah Sellars Best; and an infant brother.

The life of Mrs. Hatch will be celebrated in a service to be held Friday, December 15, at 2 p.m.at First United Methodist Church, corner of East James and North Church Streets, Mount Olive. Dr. H. Dennis Draper, Jr. and the Rev. Marti Hatch will officiate, and burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will greet friends in the church library during the hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is desired that memorial gifts be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 420, Mount Olive NC 28365.

Lee "Randy" Murphey
February 24, 1952 - December 16, 2017

Mr. Lee Elbert "Randy" Murphey, 65, resident of the Rhodes Church area near Mount Olive, died Saturday night, December 16, 2017 in a nursing facility in Roanoke, Va.

The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 20, and at other times at the home of Carroll and Diana Grady. Graveside services will be Thursday, December 21, at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. Pastor Carroll Overman will be presiding.

Randy had served in both the Army and Navy. Most of his civilian employment was in swine production on the Carroll Grady farm, with a shorter tenure of service with a truss manufacturing plant in Dunn.

He is survived by two daughters, Amy Lynn Murphey of Winthrop, Maine, and Jessica Murphey Ortiz of Gastonia; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Diana M. and Carroll Grady of Mount Olive, and Etta Beth M. Randolph of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Sandra Murphey of Goldsboro; very special nieces, Laura Read, Sherry Holmes, and Patti Lane; and other nieces, Denise Mitchell, Jenny Murphey, Brandy Pace, and Renee Murphey; and nephews, Jeremy Grady, Jason and Jamie Randolph; along with all their families.

The family gives special recognition to Stephanie Reid, ICU nurse at Wayne Hospital, and to Casey, special assistant at Kissito/Bryan Center in Roanoke for exemplary care and concern shown to Mr. Murphey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell Victor Murphey and Edith Bowes Murphey; a brother, Timothy Lee Murphey; and a nephew, Tony Murphey.

Elva Cottle
November 24, 1927 - November 30, 2017

Mrs. Elva Darden Cottle, 90, life long resident of Faison, passed away Thursday night, November 30, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Mrs.Cottle was retired from the Faison Fruit & Vegetable Exchange where she served as bookkeeper for a span of 39 years. She also assisted her husband in working the burley tobacco markets in Tennessee and Kentucky. She was long time member of the Faison United Methodist Church and the Faison Garden Club.

Those surviving Mrs. Cottle include a daughter and son-in-law, Laura Cottle Walter and Mike Walter of Raleigh; two grandsons, Scott Lane of Winston Salem and John Walter of Raleigh; a great-granddaughter, Miranda Lane of Faison; a sister-in-law, Mary Dallas Cottle Sutton of Mount Olive; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ned and Janet Cottle of Goldsboro; many loving and caring cousins, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Cottle, Jr.; a daughter, Doris Cottle Kirby; her parents, Jim and Cora Casey Darden; an infant brother; and "Oreo, " her prized shihtzu companion.

Funeral services will be Sunday, December 3, at 2 p.m. at Faison United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Jabe Largen, followed by burial in Faison Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Cottle residence, 432 S.W. Center Street in Faison on Saturday, December 2, from 4 until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Faison United Methodist Church, PO Box 417, Faison NC 28341.

Elsie Cox Howell
May 12, 1925 - January 7, 2018

Mrs. Elsie Cox Howell, 92, resident of Mount Olive since 1968 and native of Onslow County, died early Sunday morning, January 7, 2018 in a Hopewell Virginia hospital. She had resided in Hopewell with a son for the last several years. Mrs. Howell was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive. She truly enjoyed a long married life of 59 years and eight days with her husband, Edward Ray Howell, Sr., traveling with him as he served in the military, living in two foreign countries during his career. She had much time and joy with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, even great-great-grandchildren, along with all her sisters and brother. She cherished her time with her church family and her many friends at Mount Olive Senior Citizens Center.

Graveside services will be Thursday, January 11, at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, 700 Highway 24, Newport, N.C. Dr. Dennis Draper Jr. will officiate.

Mrs. Howell is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Ray Howell, Jr. and Gail Howell of Hopewell, Va.; another daughter-in-law, Ann Howell of Calypso; a sister, Cornelia Paradisi of Michigan; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; three sons, Mark Steven Howell, Michael Richard Howell, and John Gaston Howell; a daughter, Candace Howell Rivenbark; parents, John Gaston Cox, Sr. and Josie Mills Cox; brother, John Gaston Cox, Jr.; sisters, Faye Wisen, Lois Alexander, Alma Collins, Rosa Harmon, and Lucille Canady; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Best Williams
February 23, 1934 - December 9, 2017

Elizabeth Best Jackson Williams, 83, resident of the Mount Olive area, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 12, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Jonathan Altman officiating, followed by burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m.

She was a member of Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church, enjoyed gardening, and been a farm wife. She had also been employed at Young Squire Industries.

Survived by son and daughter in law, Ricky and LuAnn Jackson of Mount Olive; daughter and son in law, Betty and Wendell Fordham of Selma; grandchildren, Kyle Fordham, Jacob Fordham, and Casey Jackson; a great granddaughter, Hannah Kate Fordham.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jasper Jackson and Elton Williams; parents, Hubert and Mathia Wise Best; sister, Eleana McCullen; and an infant son.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Thunder Swamp Church, c/o Liz King, 3516 Suttontown Rd., Faison NC 28341.

Pamela Louise Grady
October 24, 1958 - November 21, 2017

Pamela Louise Grady of the Scott's Store community near Mount Olive, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, November 21, 2017 at her home at the age of 59.

A service of remembrance will be Monday, November 27, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with visitation to follow. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of her parents.

Pam is survived by her parents, Henry Carroll and Jean Grady, of Scott's Store community; her step-father, Donald Dunn of Georgia; six brothers, Hank Grady, Kenny Grady, and Brandon Grady, all of Scott's Store, Jeffrey Thigpen of Florida, Jimmy Thigpen of Kentucky, and Johnny Thigpen of Virginia; along with all of their families.

Her mother was the late Clystia Faye Holt Dunn.

Christopher Michael King
May 15, 1982 - December 2, 2017

Christopher Michael "Chris" King, 35, Faison resident, passed away Saturday night, December 2, in a motor vehicle accident.

His family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive on Wednesday, December 6, from 6 until 8 p.m., and at the home of his mother at other times (404 North Main Street, Faison NC).

Funeral services will be Thursday, December 7, at 2 p.m. at Faison Presbyterian Church with burial following in the Faison Cemetery.

Chris was a graduate of North Duplin High School with the class of 2000. He had been employed in the poultry industry and had recently became employed with a millwright company.

Chris is survived by his mother and step-father, Carol Oakes Rouse and Bobby Rouse, of Faison; his father and step-mother, Mike and Joyce Holmes of Calypso; a sister and brother-in-law, Donnis Elizabeth Hauser and William Hauser II of Benson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Shannon and Della King of Faison, Michael Elwood and Jackie Holmes of Calypso, and James and Tiffany Holmes of Grantham; four nieces and six nephews.
