Clara Lee Summerlin Garner
September 20, 1927 - January 2, 2016

Clara Lee Summerlin Garner, 88, died early Saturday morning, January 2, 2016, at her home near Summerlin's Crossroads, Mount Olive.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sammie Colon Garner, and was the devoted mother of Gerald Garner and wife, Debbie Garner, Danny Garner, Betty G. Raynor and husband, Travis Raynor, Jo Ann Garner-McGraw and belated husband, David, and Sammie Garner and wife, Leeanne Garner. She has twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous surrogate children and grandchildren.

Clara Lee was a long time member of Alum Springs Baptist Church, and was known for her work in food service at Mount Olive College and at several local restaurants.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 4, at 6 p.m. at Alum Springs Church, officiated by the Rev. Shelton Justice, with family visitation immediately following in the church fellowship hall. A private interment will be held at the Garner Family Cemetery.

Joyce Whitfield Cherry
July 14, 1953 - December 31, 2015

Joyce Whitfield Cherry, 62, of Garner's Chapel community near Mount Olive, died Thursday night, Dec. 31, 2015, at Memorial Hospital at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A farmer's daughter and wife, she had been employed at Jan-Mark and Young Squire sewing factories, and in the cafeteria, both at North Duplin School and Mount Olive College. She also had been a school bus driver, and had assisted in the operation of the family farm. She was a member of Garner's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

Joyce, daughter of the late James E. and Callie Mae Vernon Whitfield, is survived by her husband, Kenneth Lee Cherry; three daughters, Michelle Cherry Edwards and husband, George, of Dudley, Donna Cherry of Mount Olive, and Kaye Cherry Harris and husband, Matt, of Cliffside, NC; three grandchildren, Faith and Andrew Harris, and Michael Wayne Edwards; and two sisters, Ann Whitfield of Mount Olive, and Grace Whitfield Carter and husband, Rob, of Bahama.

Services will be Sunday, January 3, at 3 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Paul Rose and the Rev. Dennis Guy, with burial following in Whitfield Family Cemetery on the family farm. Visitation will be at the funeral home in the hour before the service. Memorial gifts may be made to Oak Wolfe Fire Dept., c/o Jack Alphin, 519 Bethel Church Rd., Mount Olive 28365.

Donnell W. Guy
April 4 1933 - Dec 26 2015

Donnell Wilbur "Don" Guy, Sr., 82, resident of Calypso, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 26.

His life will be remembered in a worship service to be held Monday, December 28, at 3 p.m. at Calypso Baptist Church with Dr. Gregory A. Day officiating, followed by burial in Calypso Cemetery. The Guy family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until service time Monday. At other times, they will be at the home of Suzanne and Ralph Britt, 1111 N.C. Hwy. 403 West, Mount Olive.

Mr. Guy was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was retired from civil service in the base supplies department at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He was a member of Calypso Baptist Church where he had served as deacon and Sunday school superintendent amongst other callings and duties. He had been a volunteer with 30 years of service with Calypso Fire Department before his retirement, and he had been very involved in Boy Scouts in years past. In his retirement years, he had been a gate keeper at Number One Builders Supply in Mount Olive, and was known for his daily trips to Pro-Med in Calypso where he joined friends and neighbors at the "round table" for discussions, story-telling, and solving of the world's problems. He enjoyed fishing, especially at the coast, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His quick wit will long be remembered, and so will be his "smart mouth, " with immediate "come-backs, " and his determination to not be "out done."

He was preceded in death by his son, Donnell W. "Donnie" Guy, Jr.; an infant brother, Jack Guy; and his parents, Leonard S. Guy and Mattie Barwick Guy.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Outlaw Guy, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Guy Britt and Ralph Britt, Jr. of Mount Olive; a daughter-in-law, Abby Shealy Guy of Fuquay Varina; four grandchildren, Matt Guy and wife, Brie, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Emily Guy Parker and husband, Matt, James Ralph Britt III and Luke Donnell Britt, all of Mount Olive; a sister, Doris Guy Avery and husband, Paul, of Gastonia; two brothers, L. S. Guy, Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Faison, and Doug Guy and wife, Charlotte, of Riverdale, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts are requested to be made to Calypso Baptist Church or Calypso Fire Department (both in care of Roger Davis, PO Box 56, Calypso, NC 28325.)

Christine Myers Kennedy
October 6, 1918 - January 1, 2016

Christine Myers Kennedy, resident of the Baker's Chapel community near Mount Olive, passed away Friday night, January 1, at Genesis Care Center. She was 97 years old.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 4, at 2 p.m. at Salem Advent Christian Church with burial following at Wayne Memorial Park. Visitation will take place at the church during the hour before the service, and at other times at the home of Lynwood and Ann Kennedy. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Salem Advent Christian Church at 909 North Church Street, Mount Olive NC 28365 would be appreciated.

She is survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Lynwood and Ann Kennedy of Mount Olive, and Janet S. Kennedy of Mount Olive, widow of deceased son, Durwood Kennedy; four grandchildren, Denise K. Newhard and husband, Gary, Eric Kennedy, Jeff Kennedy and wife, Kim, and Mike Kennedy and Jenifer; three great-grandchildren, MolliAnne Kennedy, Claire Kennedy, and Lindsey Kennedy; and a special cousin, Frances Best of Mount Olive.

Among those who have preceded her in death are her husband, Estus E. Kennedy; son, Durwood; her parents, James Rouden Myers and Estelle Jernigan Myers; and two sisters, Virginia Hill and Irene Best.

A special note of thanks is extended to Helen E. Britt, her special roommate at Genesis, for all of her love and support, and to the Genesis Staff for their care and consideration shown to Mrs. Kennedy.

David Henry Whitman
April 29, 1917 - December 28, 2015

David Henry Whitman, known to many as simply "The Apple Man, " passed away unexpectedly Sunday night, December 27, at Genesis Care Center at the remarkable age of 98. He now joins his beloved wife, Fannie Byrd Whitman, and other family members, in God's heavenly kingdom.

Mr. Whitman, a resident of Faison, had been a long time produce and fruit salesman.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda Gail Miller and Jimmy Miller, of Faison; two grandchildren, Jamie Gail Grady and husband, Scott, of Mount Olive, and Michael Miller and wife, Carol, of Kennesaw, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Emily, Rachel, Katie, Hannah, and David Miller, all of Kennesaw.

Funeral services for Mr. Whitman will be Wednesday, December 30, at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, officiated by the Rev. Gene Hales and the Rev. Paul Rose, with interment following in Faison Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home during the hour before the service Wednesday, and at other times at the Miller residence, 2029 Hwy. 403 West, Faison NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Outlaw Foundation, PO Box 592, Faison NC 28341, or Ronald McDonald House, 529 Moye Blvd. Greenville, NC 27834.

Cleo Vernon Carter
June 11, 1935 - December 27, 2015

Cleo Vernon Carter, 80, passed away suddenly on Sunday morning, December 27, at Vidant-Duplin Hospital in Kenansville, NC. Vernon is survived by his wife, Essie Rose Barwick Carter of the home; a son, Ronald A. Carter, and his wife Emma of Clinton; three daughters, Gail Herring and her husband Steve, of Calypso, Connie Strickland and her husband, Robert of Raleigh, and Susan Dianne Topham of Dunn; a sister, Ethelen Swisher of Greenville; and a brother, Clarence Carter, and his wife Mable of Fayetteville; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Vernon was the son of the late Owen Lee and Bertha Mae Smith Carter, and was preceded in death by a son; Anthony Wayne Carter; three brothers, Anderson Carter, Franklin Carter, and Herbert Carter; and a granddaughter.

A service to remember and celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, December 29, at 2:00pm from the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. The Rev. Wanda Simmons will officiate the service, followed by interment in the Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday starting at 1:00pm.

Flowers are welcome, or memorials may be directed to Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Robert Allen "Butch" Barwick
March 30, 1947 - July 4, 2018

Robert Allen "Butch" Barwick, 71, resident of Chapel Hill and a native of Mount Olive, died Wednesday night, July 4, 2018 at NC Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Barwick had served in the United States Army and had a successful career as a managerial executive in the pharmaceutical industry. A graduate of Mount Olive High School, he attained his bachelor's degree and two master's degrees from University of North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ayers Barwick of the home; a daughter, Angela Barwick Payne and husband, Steve, of Cumming, Ga.; a step daughter, Kristy Yule and husband, Sean of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Meagan Marie Payne and Steven Blake Payne, both of Cumming, Ga.; step grandchildren, Hannah Yule and Olivia Yule, both of Chapel Hill; a brother, Kenneth Douglas "Ken" Barwick and wife, Donna, of Marietta, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his daughter, Janet Turner Barwick; and his parents, Allen A. and Clara Mae Wilkins Barwick.

Allen Wayne Cashwell
September 8, 1949 - July 23, 2018

Allen Wayne Cashwell, 68, Dudley area resident, died Monday, July 23, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

His family will receive friends Wednesday, July 25, at Tyndall Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. with funeral services following at 3 p.m., after which burial will take place in the Calypso Cemetery. Pastor Jeffrey Dail will conduct the service.

Wayne had been employed in both dry wall and plumbing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise Overton Cashwell Davis and Sylvester "June" Cashwell, Jr.; two brothers, Glenn Cashwell and Sylvester "Rudy" Cashwell III; and a sister, Mary Ann Cashwell Padgett.

He is survived by his companion, Crystal Smith, of Dudley; a daughter, Tammy Rae Cashwell and friend, Terry Wynn of Dudley; three grandsons, R J. Williams, Brandon Roa and Trae Roa; six great grandchildren; a brother, Larry Cashwell of Calypso; special cousin, Jackie Rivenbark and wife, Ann, of Goldsboro.

James Benjamin "Bud" Swinson
August 6, 1949 - July 5, 2018

James Benjamin "Bud" Swinson, Seven Springs area resident and United States Army veteran, went to his heavenly home Thursday night, July 5, 2018 while at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born in Duplin County on August 6, 1949, he was one of nine children born icon to the late James Ulysses Swinson and Bertha Elizabeth Brock Swinson.

Bud was most recently employed as a registered nurse with Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by seven siblings and spouses, Leamon and Kaye Swinson, Bobby Shelton "Ham" and Jo Anne Swinson, Thomas "Tom" Swinson, Evelyn S. "Sis" and Gordon Malpass, Velma S. and J. B. Price, Peggy S. King, and Faye S. Taylor, and one nephew.

He is survived by a sister, Betty S. Webber and husband, Clayton, of Seven Springs, and spouses of deceased siblings, Elmer "Buddy" Taylor, David King, and Elizabeth "Lib" Swinson; beloved step-children, Tammy Stafford Kuipers and Wade Stafford, and their families, as well as many nieces and nephews whom he adored, and who loved their "Uncle Bud."

The life of Mr. Bud Swinson will be remembered in a service to be held Monday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m. from the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mount Olive. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Dail and the Rev. Mickey Whitfield. A time of visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro NC 27534, a place that was close to Bud's heart and from which he received exceptional care in his final days just as he had rendered to many others during his tenure of compassionate service there.
