Mickey Gene Best
August 8, 1948 - August 8, 2018

Mickey Gene Best, resident of the Beautancus Community near Mount Olive, passed away on his 70th birthday Wednesday evening, August 8, 2018, while at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

His life will be remembered in a graveside service to be held Friday, August 10, at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. The Rev. Paul Rose & The Rev. Jerry Marshburn will officiate. The family will be receiving friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers, any donations to the funeral home toward funeral expenses would be appreciated by the family.

Mickey, an avid lover of horses, was a member of the Beautancus Saddle Club. He operated Mickey's Auto Body Repair Shop.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn Dixon Best, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Best Sholar and Jamie Sholar of Wallace; a granddaughter, Kelsey Sholar Quinn and husband, Cody, of Charleston, SC; a brother, Dallas Best of Mount Olive; and a sister, Christine Best of Goldsboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erman and Julia "Teen" Bell Best; brother, Elwood and Jimmy; and sisters, Lucille and Louise.

Alice Harrell Baumann
December 19, 1948 - July 19, 2018

Alice Harrell Baumann, resident of the Kenansville area, passed away Thursday, July 19, at Vidant Duplin Hospital.

She was a native of the Thunder Swamp community near Mount Olive, and was daughter of Wilbur and Margaret Harrell.

She has operated "The Tax Place" in Kenansville for more 20 years.

Mrs.Baumann is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jamie Wellington-Smith and Buddy Smith of Kenansville; five grandchildren, Holly Boris, Miatta Davis, Skyler Wellington, Sterling Wellington and Makenzie Davis; two great-grandchildren; sister, Shelia Marie Harrell of Mount Olive; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Sheila H. Harrell of Mount Olive; two other sisters-in-law, Ramona S. Harrell and Sandra H. Harrell of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews.

Loved ones she joins in death include her parents; her husband, Carl C.Baumann Jr.; a son, Jeffery Todd Wellington; and two brothers, Rufus Barron Harrell and the Rev. Vance Harrell.

Mrs. Baumann was a loving, caring and most generous lady, always willing and ready to help anyone with a need.

Her life will be remembered Monday evening, July 23, at 6 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home chapel, with visitation afterward.

James "Porky" Brock
October 29, 1957 - June 26, 2018

James Elwood "Porky" Brock, 60, of the Calypso area, died Tuesday evening, June 26, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

A graveside service will be Thursday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at the Pate Cemetery.

Porky had been an equipment operator in the logging industry and also a truck driver.

He is survived by four children, Jamie Brock of Clinton, Casey Brock, Jennifer Dorriety Elias, and Joey Dorriety, all of Winterville; three grandchildren, Justin Elias, Mariana Arroyo, and Jasper Dorriety; and the mother of his children, Debra Herring Brock of Calypso.

He was the son of Helen Marie Brock and the brother of Jack Brock, both deceased.

Ralph Lee Vernon
November 23, 1925 - June 25, 2018

Ralph Lee Vernon, 92, Warsaw resident and United States Army Veteran of World War II, passed away early Monday morning, June 25, at Warsaw Health and Rehab. Center.

Mr. Vernon was retired with West Auto Parts, was a member of Warsaw Presbyterian Church where he had served as deacon and elder, and was a member of the Warsaw post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had been a Boy Scouts Troop Leader and was a volunteer with Warsaw Fire and Rescue in years gone by.

Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pigford Vernon; his parents, Edwin L. and Maude King Vernon; a sister and three brothers.

He is survived by his four children, Melvin Vernon of Warsaw, Jenny V. Whitfield and husband, Boots, of Goldsboro, Mary Lee McKay of Newport, and Debbie V. Pergerson and husband, Mitch, of Roxboro; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a special niece, Hilda Miller. Also remembered is his special friend, Mrs. Annie Outlaw, whom God called home later the same day as Mr. Vernon.

Mr. Vernon’s life will be remembered in a graveside service to be held on Sunday, July 1, at 2 p.m. in the Faison Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Michael L. "Mickey" Whitfield. The family will greet friends at the Warsaw Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Patient Services at Warsaw Health & Rehab, 214 Lane Field Rd., Warsaw, NC 28398, or the charity of one’s choosing.

Marjoray Williams Shivar
November 11, 1929 - June 7, 2018

Marjoray Williams Shivar passed away June 7, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Julia Frances Garris Williams Edwards and George Jordan Williams, and the granddaughter of the late Laura Frances and Melvin Garris with whom she lived for a time during her youth. The Seven Springs area was her home throughout life except for time spent traveling with her military husband, the late Ned Shivar.

Her teaching career of twenty-seven years included stints in Lenoir, Johnston, Wayne, and Cabarrus Counties in North Carolina, two years with Department of Defense Schools in Orleans, France, and five years in Naples, Italy, which was a place dear to her heart. She lived with great energy and joy and loved gardening. She enjoyed many loyal, loving, and life-long friendships. She was a member of Seven Springs United Methodist Church for most of her life, but as she grew old and cold, she could not attend as often as she would have liked.

Marjoray was predeceased by her wonderful step-father, Otha Milton Edwards; sisters, Laura Mae Williams and Laura Blanche Williams Wilson; and her brother, Oscar Milton Edwards.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Sybil Shivar, precious grandson, Jimmy Ned Shivar Person, and son-in-law, Jimmy Brooks Person; brother-in-law, Joseph Wilson, and nieces, Mary Frances Wilson Guilliams (Jimmy), and Esther Jo Wilson Davis (Charles); great-nieces, Laura Rachel Barwick Swinson (Greg), and Hannah Lottie Guilliams; great-nephew, Aaron Barwick (Cayla); and great-great-nephews, Wilson Dexter Rouse and James Ellis Swinson; niece, Candy Edwards Alexander and great-nephews, Milton Jerry Herring and James Paul Alexander. She also leaves behind first cousins, Jean Edwards Brinson and husband, L.H., Paula Garris Craig and husband, Bob, and Donald Wayne Williams and wife, Mary. Last but certainly not least, she will be missed by her Shelton Bathea Sutton, without whom she could not have survived.

Friends and family are invited to remember Marjoray from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10th, in the Price-Jackson Fellowship Hall at Seven Springs United Methodist Church, “the Church on the Hill.”

The family will hold a private service of committal in the church cemetery, and would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to all who walked with them along this final path.

Marjoray had hoped that those wishing to do something in her memory would either plant a tree or shrub and think of her. She may also be remembered by making a contribution to Seven Springs United Methodist Church, c/o Judy Jackson, 2330 Indian Springs Road, Dudley, NC 28333, or Seven Springs Cemetery Maintenance Fund, 128 Jerusalem Road, Seven Springs, NC 28578.

J.H. Draughon, Jr
June 8, 1941 - June 21, 2018

James Hugh Draughon, Jr., better known as J.H., passed away just moments past midnight on the morning of June 21, 2018, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Mr. Draughon, a long time Mount Olive resident, had been in the used car business. He worshipped at Grace Community Church in Goldsboro.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Bass Draughon; a son, Dr. T. Scott Draughon and wife, Tracy, of Wilmington; two daughters, Susan d. Whitaker and husband, Doug, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jill D. Rosen and husband, Louis, of Wilmington; twin sisters, Dorothea D. Evans and Dorothy D. Sykes, both of Mount Olive; and six beloved grandchildren, Caroline Cross and husband, Taylor, Natalie Whitaker, Alexandra Kilkenny Draughon, Anne Scott Draughon, Zachary Draughon Rosen and Zeniphen Draughon Rosen.’

His parents, James H. Draughon and Teva Autry Draughon, preceded him in death.

Mr. Draughon’s life will be remembered in a service at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, and will be officiated by Pastor David Karns and Mr. Michael Odom. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Interment will be at Wayne Memorial Park on Monday, June 25, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorial gifts be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.

Danny Thomas Strickland
September 7, 1956 - March 3, 2019

Danny Thomas Strickland, 62, resident of Durham Lake Road, Dudley, N.C. passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.

A service in remembrance of his life will be held Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, followed by a time of visitation. At other times, friends and family may call at the home of Gary and Jennifer Strickland, 3617 U.S. Hwy. 117 Alternate, Dudley.

Danny was a retired roofer. He is survived by his wife, Retha Creech Strickland, of the home; his father, Leslie Gerald Strickland of Dunn; three sons and their spouses, Gary and Jennifer Strickland of Dudley, Steve and Rena Mason of Mount Olive, and Joe and Yvonne Mason of Dudley; two grandchildren, Logan Strickland of Dudley, and Cassidy Mason of Mount Olive; and several brothers and sisters.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Ida Mae Hudson Strickland Wheeler.

James Benjamin "Bud" Swinson
August 6, 1949 - July 5, 2018

James Benjamin "Bud" Swinson, Seven Springs area resident and United States Army veteran, went to his heavenly home Thursday night, July 5, 2018 while at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born in Duplin County on August 6, 1949, he was one of nine children born icon to the late James Ulysses Swinson and Bertha Elizabeth Brock Swinson.

Bud was most recently employed as a registered nurse with Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by seven siblings and spouses, Leamon and Kaye Swinson, Bobby Shelton "Ham" and Jo Anne Swinson, Thomas "Tom" Swinson, Evelyn S. "Sis" and Gordon Malpass, Velma S. and J. B. Price, Peggy S. King, and Faye S. Taylor, and one nephew.

He is survived by a sister, Betty S. Webber and husband, Clayton, of Seven Springs, and spouses of deceased siblings, Elmer "Buddy" Taylor, David King, and Elizabeth "Lib" Swinson; beloved step-children, Tammy Stafford Kuipers and Wade Stafford, and their families, as well as many nieces and nephews whom he adored, and who loved their "Uncle Bud."

The life of Mr. Bud Swinson will be remembered in a service to be held Monday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m. from the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mount Olive. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Dail and the Rev. Mickey Whitfield. A time of visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro NC 27534, a place that was close to Bud's heart and from which he received exceptional care in his final days just as he had rendered to many others during his tenure of compassionate service there.
