Ishmael Arnold, Jr.
January 8, 1933 ~ September 22, 2010

Ishmael Arnold, Jr., 77, died Wednesday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Gilmer, TX, he was the son the late Ishmael Worth Arnold, Sr. of Gilmer, TX and the late Flossie Hill Russell of Liberty, TX. He was retired with the United States Air Force and General Electric.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2:00 pm at Wayne Memorial Park with full military honors.

Mr. Arnold is survived by his wife, Carol Joan Lewis Arnold; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol Lyn & Russell Miller of Goldsboro; his brother, Charles Jimmy Arnold of Gimer, TX; his half-brother, John Russell of Liberty, TX; his granddaughter, Amanda Faith Hagler & her husband, Chris of Statesville, NC; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Carson & Willow.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro and at other times at the home.

Jeremy E. Pate
November 10, 1989 ~ September 18, 2010

Jeremy Elijah Pate, age 20, of 163 Pearsall Lane in Dudley, died Saturday as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Wayne County he was the son of Elijah Bryant “Buddy” Pate of Dudley and Joyce Jones of Mt. Olive. He was employed with Franklin Bakery.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Pineview Cemetery near Seven Springs.

In addition to his parents, Jeremy is survived by four children.

Family members will greet friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his mother, 160 Coltren Lane in Mt. Olive.

Joseph “Little Joe” Carter, Jr.
August 21, 1989 – September 18, 2010

Dudley - Joseph “Little Joe” Carter, Jr. age 21, died Saturday due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicles accident. Born in Wayne Co., he was the son of Joseph Carter, Sr. and Martha Annette Lawrence.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his sons, Jayden Lee Carter and Camden Lee Carter; his fiancé, Cindle Dubois; two brothers, Anthony Scott Carter and William Ted Megginsom, III; his sister, Chelsea Lynne Carter; his maternal grandparents, Leland Lawrence and Geneva Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Leonard Carter and Janice Carter.

Funeral Services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Pastor Bobby Heath and Rev. James Cullen officiating. Burial will follow in the Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the homes of his mother, Martha Annette Lawrence, 106 Walters Dr., Goldsboro or his father, Joseph Carter, Sr., 122 Erik Dr., Dudley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions my be directed to the Jayden and Camden Carter Trust Fund, C/O First Citizens Bank, 200 East Ash St., Goldsboro NC 27530.

Helen D. Killette
February 27, 1916 ~ September 18, 2010

Helen Daw Killette, age 94, died Friday, September 18th at her residence. Born in Onslow County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Spicy Blake Daw and wife of the late Lonnie Edward Killette. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 am at The Free Chapel Church with Pastor Mike Williams officiating. Family members will greet friends Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 at the church. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mrs. Killette is survived by her three daughters, Karen Summerlin of Pikeville, Diane and Art Andrews of Pikeville, Lonniette and Kenny Porter of Kinston; a brother David Daw of Goldsboro; a sister, Eloise Baker of Tarboro; three grandsons, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Community Home Care and Hospice, 1201-C Wayne Memorial Dr., Goldsboro, NC 27530 and WAGES Senior Companion Program, 601 Royal Ave., Goldsboro, NC 27534.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at The Bridge with the Rev. Ferrell Hardison and Young Life Leader, E.J. Scalf officiating. Family members will greet friends at the church immediately following the service. A private burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

Bailey S. Lynch
March 27, 1996 - November 29, 2015

Bailey Scott Lynch, age 19, died suddenly on November 29th following a hunting accident. He was born icon in Wayne County, attended The Bridge Church and had been active in the Young Life of Wayne County. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, O’Max Powell.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at The Bridge with the Rev. Ferrell Hardison and Young Life Leader, E.J. Scalf officiating. Family members will greet friends at the church immediately following the service. A private burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

Bailey is survived by his mother, Kim Hankins; his father and step mother, Jeff and Caroline Lynch; his brother, Tyler Lynch; his sister, Kayla Lynch; grandparents, Shirley Powell, Mitchell and Shelby Lynch, and David and Eva Crockett; his girlfriend, Hailey Sawkiw; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Albert M. Avery, Jr.
October 25, 1921 - November 15, 2015

Albert Mellon Avery, Jr., age 94, formerly of Goldsboro, NC, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2015.

Albert (“Al”) was born icon in Dallas, Texas on October 25, 1921. He was the only child of the late Albert Mellon Avery, Sr. and Thelma Walker Avery. After graduating from high school in Memphis, TN, Albert earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Mississippi in 1943, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He also received a master’s degree in political science from Stetson University in Deland, FL in 1957.

Albert joined the US Army in 1942 and was a veteran of World War II and Vietnam. He retired in 1972 with the rank of Colonel. During his thirty year career, he served in a variety of armor units and received numerous awards for his distinguished service to his country.

During World War II, Albert served as a platoon leader in a reconnaissance unit in the European Theater of Operations. He received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Star Medals with “V” Device for his participation in acts of heroism involving conflict with an armed enemy.

His army career also included two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he served as a Senior Armor Advisor to the South Vietnamese Army. He was instrumental in organizing the South Vietnamese Armor School and was awarded the South Vietnamese Distinguished Service Medal. Colonel Avery also received two Legion of Merit Awards from the U.S. Army for his exceptional service in Vietnam.

While stationed in Tokyo, Japan, then Major Avery married then Captain Sarah Ellis, from the Rosewood Community of Goldsboro, on December 15, 1962.

After their retirement from the army, Albert and Sarah were very active in a variety of civic organizations. Because of their interest in South Vietnam, they were instrumental in the adoption of two Vietnamese families while living in Clearwater, FL. They were particularly proud of their two adopted families as seven of nine of the children graduated from college. In later years while living in the NC mountains, they were honored for their volunteer service in Avery County, NC.

In addition to his parents, Colonel Avery was predeceased by his loving wife, Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Ellis Avery.

Survivors include a daughter Elizabeth Avery Mounger and husband Whitman of Greenwood, MS; a son Albert M. Avery, III of Las Vegas, NV; a grandson Davis Mounger of Chattanooga, TN; two granddaughters, Avery Mounger Lee and husband Hunter of Jackson, MS and Jennifer Avery Wilner and husband Howard of Pleasanton, CA; and five great grandchildren, Bramble Mounger, Avery Lee, Anna Clinton Lee, Jacob Wilner and Joshua Wilner.

Albert is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Cleone Ellis of Apex and Carolyn Thompson of Goldsboro, one brother-in-law Harold Ellis and wife Martha Ann of Goldsboro, and many nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Albert’s life will take place Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home chapel, 2873 US Hwy 117 South, Dudley, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Wayne Memorial Park with full graveside military honors following the service.

The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to the staff of Windsor Point Continuing Care Retirement Center in Fuquay-Varina, NC for the compassion and personal care they gave to both Albert and Sarah from the day they arrived in 2008.

Joyce Armstrong Sutton
March 03, 1931 - November 08, 2015

Joyce Armstrong Sutton, age 84, died Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice in Goldsboro. Joyce was born, reared and lived her entire life in Faison before being injured in a fall at home about a week prior to her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dorothy Armstrong, her sister, Edith Bragg and her husband, Leon, who died just three months earlier.

She is survived by her sons, David Sutton of Faison and Mark Sutton of Sampson County, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was a stay-at-home mom after her sons were born icon and later worked as a secretary with the Duplin County Schools before retiring over 20 years ago. She enjoyed many years of reading and working crossword puzzles during retirement. She also enjoyed preparing, cooking and eating many vegetables that her husband Leon grew in their garden next to their home in Faison for their entire married life.

Joyce will be cremated and a private service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers, no memorial donations be made.
