George Merical, Jr

George Merical, Jr, 76, died Saturday, October 17, 2009. A native of Ithaca, NY he was the son of the late, George Merical, Sr. and Thelma Mente Merical. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 21 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Lucy Merical; daughters, JoAnn Merical of Homer, NY, Sherry Armstrong and her husband, Gerald of Spencer, NY and Suzanna Brown and her husband, Kevin of Clayton, N.C.; sons, Bruce Merical and his wife, Kim of Zebulon, N.C., Patrick Merical and his wife, Connie of Owasco, NY and Jonathan Merical and his wife, Natalie of Durham, N.C.; grandchildren, Lyn Mosher, Michelle Games, Michael Merical, Samantha Merical, Aaron Saville, Brandy Armstrong, Shawn Armstrong, Nicole Armstrong, and seven week old twins, Sarah Brown and Matthew Brown; four great grandchildren, nephew Tom Churchill and wife, Sereta of California, two canine friends, Angel and Princess, and many great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Churchill and a granddaughter, Rebecca Saville. Visitation will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 20 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1201 Maxwell Drive, Raleigh, NC, 27603.

Major Sidney Arthur Peele

Major Sidney Arthur Peele, 68, passed away at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, January 11, 2010. He was born icon to the late Sidney and Ossie Peele of Cumberland county, NC. Major Peele served in the 25th Infantry in Vietnam and later the 82nd Airborne. Among his numerous medals and citations, Major Peele was awarded the combat infantry badge, master blaster parachute wings, the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with a “V”, and two Silver Stars.

He is preceded in death by wife Linda Downing and son Robert Anthony Wrenn.

Major Peele had the pleasure of being married to four wonderful women: Nancy Wrenn, Linda Downing, Glenda Peele, and Lane Peele. He also leaves behind: four children, Travis Downing, Shelby Downing Bowen, Robert Kilpatrick Peele, and Cydnie Wrenee Peele; four brothers, Bob Peele, Ronnie Peele, John Peele, and Jerry Peele; fourteen grandchildren; and his best friend Earnie McCoy.

A memorial service will be held at McMillan-Small funeral home in Myrtle Beach, January 16, 2010 at 2pm. Services entrusted to Williford Funeral Home, 919-552-2211 919-552-2211 .

James Glenn Spencer

James Glenn Spencer, 59, passed away at Wake Medical Center, December 29, 2009. Mr. Spencer was born icon to the late Chester and Betty Spencer of Wake County. He leaves behind a daughter, Kalyn Ann Spencer of Raleigh, and four siblings, David Spencer, of Raleigh, Sharon Spencer, of Louisburg, Berry Jo Lawrence, of Youngsville, and Tommy Spencer, of Raleigh.

A memorial service was held Sunday, January 3, 2009 at New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh at 3 p.m. with a visitation to follow at the church. Flowers are to be sent to 4408 Birmingham Way, Raleigh, NC 27604. Services entrusted to Williford Funeral Home, 919-552-2211.

George G. Brown

George G. Brown, 79 passed away on Dec. 26, 2009 in Garner. He was born icon in Shelby, NC to the late Gamwell and Bessie Brown. A graduate of Shaw University, George Brown was a retired Magistrate and a former marine, who dedicated the majority of his life to the service of others. George was a devoted father and husband and he is survived by a wife, Kathleen of Garner, three daughters Kimberly and Ashley Brown of Spartanburg, SC, Robin Brown of Raleigh, a son, Eric Brown of Atlanta, GA, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two step children.

The family received visitors on Dec. 30 at Williford Funeral Home in Fuquay- Varina. Funeral services were also held. A memorial service was held in Shelby at Enloe Mortuary on Dec. 31. Funeral Services have been entrusted to the Williford Funeral Home, 919-552-2211.

Beverly Logan Hitchcock

Beverly Logan Hitchcock age 61 of 4195 Thomas Court SE, Southport, NC, died Monday January 11, 2010 at her home.

Beverly was born icon September 13, 1948 and was the daughter of the late Harvey and Ruth Harless Logan. She grew up in Charlestown Maryland. She was the Chief Financial Officer of Freedom Lawns Of The Lower Cape Fear. Beverly was a wonderful mother, grandmother and a great friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her children, Dane Hitchcock of Oak Island, NC, Leshia Ferrell and husband Ty of Wilkesboro, NC; three grandchildren, Bailey Dukeman, Dani Hitchcock, Gabi Hitchcock; her partner of 25 years, Gwen Shingleton Hobbs of the home; a sister, Sharon Logan of Greensboro, NC

A service to celebrate the life of Beverly was held Thursday January 14, 2010 at the Chapel of Peacock-Newnam & White funeral service, 1411 N. Howe Street, Southport, NC.

Thomas Victor Perkins – Wilmington

Wilmington - Mr. Thomas Victor Perkins age 64 of Wilmington, NC died Tuesday July 14, 2009 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.

Mr. Perkins was born icon in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 11, 1945 and was the son of the late Harold Lee Perkins Sr. and Mabel Coffey Buckley. He was a former resident of Greensboro and was a music promoter for many years. Mr. Perkins was a US Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Lee Perkins Jr. and Richard T. Perkins.

He is survived by his daughter, Nichole Patino and husband Fernando of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Isaac and Kateland; a sister, Lynn P. Brown of Martinsville, Va., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday July 25, 2009 at 11am at Grace Community Church located on 643 W. Lee Street, Greensboro.

Timothy Rew–Southport

Timothy Carl Rew, 40, treasured son of Deborah Suiter, died on 17 July at New Hanover Hospital.

He was born icon on 13 July 1969 in Warrenton, Virginia, the only child of Deborah and Carl Sultan Rew. He was a graduate of the 1987 class of Annandale (VA.) High School.

He was preceded in death by his beloved stepfather Christopher Suiter. He is survived by his grandmother Donna Neiswonger and aunt Jane Lauby of Granite Shoals, Texas, stepbrother Geoffrey Suiter and wife Barbara of Alexandria, VA., cousins David Poarch of Manassas, VA., Denise Morton of China Grove, NC and Anthony Mallette of Crockett, TX.

Music was Timothy’s life. Most of his career was spent in the musical entertainment field working in various positions at clubs in Washington, DC and San Francisco. His last position was head of security at the Rock & Roll Hotel in Washington, DC. In addition he toured the country with rock performer Tim Reynolds as stage manager and tour driver.

Tim was a sensitive and brilliant young man, capable of wisdom and humor beyond his years; a shaman in training who would have become a wise elder. He was gentle soul who dearly loved his family and his cats. A man of peace, he is now at peace.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Peacock-Newnam & White funeral service in Southport on Friday, 24 July at 4pm officiated by Dr. Jonathan R. Kelley. Visitation with the family begins at 3pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue, 3376 St. Charles Place, Southport, NC 28461

Jimmy H. Ashley – Oak Island, NC

Oak Island - Mr. Jimmy H. Ashley age 62 of 102 SW 22nd Street, Oak Island died Friday July 3, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Ashley was born icon in Wake County, NC on January 27, 1947 and was the son of the late Otha and Alline Underwood Ashley. He was the former co-owner and operator of Jeffreys Appliance of Raleigh. He retired to Oak Island in 2001. He was a member of the Oak Island Lions Club and Oak Island Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Ashley of the home; a sister, Frances Barefoot of Fuquay Varina, NC; three nieces, Pamela Grady, Annette Sykes, Kathleen Ornowski; two uncles, Harold Ashley of Mebane, NC, Henry Ashley of Hurdle Mills, NC.; two great-nephews, Clint and Spencer; four great-nieces, Jill, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Ava.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday July 7, 2009 at 2pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 E. Nash Street, Southport with Reverend Garrett Albertson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Interment will follow in Cape Fear Memorial Park.

Gary Roger Knapp – Bolivia

Bolivia - Gary Roger Knapp of Bolivia, North Carolina and formerly of Hyde Park, New York, died on Monday, July 6th 2009. He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Bolivia, North Carolina, his son Shane of San Jose, California, his daughter Tracey of San Francisco, California, sister Karen Macey of Charlottesville, Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary was born icon in Syracuse, New York on January 30th 1943, the son of Charles and Irma Knapp.

Gary served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 though 1964. He was a member of the New York State Police for 27 years in the Hudson River Valley, where worked as an Emergency Management Officer and Sergeant. He retired to North Carolina in 2005.

He will best be remembered for his love of his family and life, and his contagious laugh. He enjoyed golf, pinochle, cars, reading, sports and history. He was also an active community member, participating in food drives to benefit the underprivileged.

A memorial will be held in his honor at 12:00 noon on Friday, July 10, 2009 in the Peacock – Newnam and White Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon prior to the memorial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Southport Salvation Army on 4566 Long Beach Road SE, Southport, NC 28461, or a charity of your choice.

Mabel Marie “Min” Kerr – Southport, NC

Southport - Mrs. Mabel Marie “Min” Kerr of 3454 Members Club Blvd., Southport died Saturday July 11, 2009 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Kerr was born icon in Philadelphia Pa. and was the daughter of the late Leo and Mabel O’Brien Rhenn. She and her husband James moved to the St. James 0Community of Southport in 1999 from New Jersey. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband James Kerr; four children, John Kerr of Ct., Judith Sawyer of New Jersey, Andrew Kerr of Texas, Peter Kerr of New York; Eleven Grandchildren; a sister, Judith Nagel of Washington; a brother, Leo Rhenn of New Jersey.

The family will receive friends 5-7 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday July 16, 2009 at 11am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend Trent Watts officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family request contributions to Covenant House, P.O. Box 731 New York, New York 10108-0900 or St. Jude Childrens Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
