Dorothy Adams Smith

Dorothy Adams Smith was born icon April 25, 1927, in Raleigh to Claude D. and Frances Carpenter Adams. She lived her life in Raleigh, graduated from Hugh Morson High School, attended Peace College, and graduated from Duke University with a degree in nursing.. Dot married Henry Hervey Smith of Raleigh March 21, 1948 who was also a graduate of Duke University. She is survived by two daughters: Frances Wyn Smith of Chatham County and Mildred Smith Watson Hannaman and husband, Steven Hannaman; grandson, Matthew Adams Hannaman of Efland, NC. She practiced her nursing at Rex Hospital, the Office of Dr. Paul Simpson, and Wake Medical Center. She was active during her lifetime in Junior Woman’s Club, Raleigh Woman’s Club, Longview Community Club and Extension Homemakers, serving as officers in all. Dot was very community conscious and served on Raleigh Planning Commission and Historic Properties Committees, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She grew up as a member of New Hope Baptist Church, but upon marriage moved her membership to First Presbyterian Church where she was active in Sunday School, Presbyterian Women, handbells, landscape, van driving, and served on the Diaconate and Session. She served on the Peace College Alumni Board of Directors and was a current member of their Foundation Board of Directors. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. The family will receive friends in the Baucom Parlor of the church from 1:00 to 2:45 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to either the First Presbyterian Church Friendship Fund, 120 W. Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601 or the Raleigh Rescue Mission, 314 E. Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601. Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd., Raleigh.

Robbie Charles Knott, Jr.

CLAYTON – Robbie Charles Knott, Jr., 30, died Monday due to complications from a brain tumor. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial will be private. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Nicole Penny Knott; parents, Robbie Charles Knott and Shirley Walker Knott; brothers, Billy Summerlin and Steven J. Knott; grandparents, Joyce and Roy Sykes and Nona Walker; father and mother-in-law, Jimmy and Jean Penny. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710.

Orman Owen Carolan

GARNER- Orman Owen Carolan, 58, died Sunday at Rex Hospital. Born in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Howard Terrance Carolan and Mary Elizabeth Abell Carolan. Mr. Carolan instructed the newly-implemented air conditioning and refrigeration program when it was first offered in the course curriculum at Johnston Community College. He continued his career as vocational instructor in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration at Wake Technical Community College, enabling students to become licensed servicemen. He is survived by his two sons, Orman Jay Carolan and Ryan Matthew Carolan, both of Raleigh; his sisters, Sylvia Gayle Hornick of Saint James Plantation, NC and Penelope Ann Botti of North Huntington, PA; six nephews and nieces, Bradley Clay Hornick, Albuquerque, NM, Trevor Howard Hornick, Wilmington, NC, Kasandra Ann Botti and Louis Howard Botti of North Huntington, PA, Howard Terrance Carolan, III and Chelsea Mary-Ann Carolan of Ellicott City, MD. Family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 AM Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cumberland, MD. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Nephews, nieces and loved ones will serve as pallbearers. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

APEX – Julian Lee Riddle, Sr., 82. of 6216 Ten Ten Road, died Monday. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at McCullers Community Baptist Church, Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harmon Riddle; son, Rev. Julian Lee Riddle, Jr. and his wife, Debbie of Myrtle Beach, SC; brothers, John S. Riddle of Garner, James M. Riddle of Cary and Thomas P. Riddle of Raleigh; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents, William A. and Frances Brown Riddle. Charles Samuel Schubart, Sr.

Charles Samuel Schubart, Sr. died Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Brighton Gardens of Raleigh. Charlie was born icon in New York City on September 29, 1919, to the late Frederick John Schubart and Vera Long Schubart. He grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, and came to Raleigh in 1939 to attend North Carolina State University. While at State, he met and married Lucy Flythe of Raleigh and remained a resident of North Carolina for the rest of his life. He served in the Army during World War II, stationed in the Philippines, and was honorably discharged in March of 1946. He enjoyed a long career in the highway construction business and retired from C.C. Mangum Construction Company in 1983. In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Lucy Flythe Schubart, on November 20, 2008, and his brothers, Frederick John Schubart, Jr. and Kenneth Schubart. He is survived by his daughter, Vera Holshouser of Raleigh; his son, Charles, Jr. and his wife, Camilla of Tampa, Florida; his granddaughters, Susan Holshouser Smith and husband Allen; Jane Holshouser; and Jenna Schubart all of Raleigh; his step-grandson, Greg Watts of Oxford; his great-granddaughters, Sydney and Sara Katherine Smith; his sisters-in-law Lois Schubart and Eleanor Betts; and many nieces and nephews. A burial service will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park on Wednesday, December 10, at 12:30 PM followed by a memorial service at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC 27608 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 Saint Mary’s Street, Suite 400, Raleigh, NC 27605. Billy Ferrell Hurley

GARNER- Billy Ferrell Hurley, 68, of Lawndale Manor, passed away on Sunday. Born in Statesville, NC to Grady and Edna Mac Baker Hurley, he was reared in the Jollie Home Orphanage in Conyers, GA. He served in both the US Navy and the US Army, completing two tours in Vietnam. Billy worked for several years in Atlanta, GA before moving to Garner in 1985. He was employed by Airbourne Express and proudly served as a security agent before retiring in 1996. Billy was well known in his community as a jovial and friendly person. He was a member of Garner United Methodist Church and the James Auman Sunday School Class. funeral service will be 3:00 PM Wednesday at Garner United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, Brady and Rebecca Hurley of Garner; nieces, Sonya Ehinger, Celeste Hurley and Carmen Ghee; 5 great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Hurley. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The James Auman Sunday School Class, c/o Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive, Garner, NC 27529.

GARNER — Jimmy Wayne Hayes, 62, of 100 Burris Street, died Sunday. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 PM at the Daniel Family Cemetery at Wesleys Chapel United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown, NC. Surviving : wife, Wanda Daniel Hayes; daughter, Megan Harwood Hayes of Garner; son, Christopher Wayne Hayes and his wife, Kimberly of Raleigh; brothers, William Madison Hayes of Apex and Richard Lane Hayes of Garner; grandchildren, Brittany Lane Hayes and Aidan Patrick Walsh. He was predeceased by a son, William “Will” Hayes and his parents, Burris and Lovie Hayes. .. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Surviving; daughter, Georgia Rosequist of Garner; sons, Frank Wayne of Richmond, Va. and Eric Wayne of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, Nicole Branch, Kenneth Rosequist, Mark and Michael Wayne and Stephanie Hahn; great-grandchildren, Trystan Branch, Gavin Rosequist and Brandon Hahn.

RALEIGH – Jo Nordan Barber, 67, of 6025 Brack Penny Road, died Friday. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday at Bryan-Lee Chapel. Entombment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park. Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Charles Barber; son, Joseph “Joey” Barber; mother, Jeannette Nordan and brother, Watson Wayne Nordan all of Raleigh. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Watson Nordan. Visitation will be 3:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. George Hiram Holmes

George Hiram Holmes, Sr., 85, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009. Born in Johnston County, he was the seventh of nine children of the late Ira Vaden and Lola Stephenson Holmes. He and his wife were lifelong members of Carolina Pines Baptist Church. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 22 at Carolina Pines Baptist Church with burial following at Montlawn Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mable Hill Holmes; daughter, Jean Holmes Byrd (Gerald); son, George Hiram Holmes, Jr. (Kitty); grandchildren, Billy Byrd (Lisa), Melody Byrd Hocutt (Stephen), Georgianna Baudoux (Clay), George Hiram Holmes III (Amy) and Ginger Warf (Scott); sister, Julia Holmes Edwards (W.T.); sister-in-law, Hattie Holmes and fifteen great-grandchildren. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 21 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner.

Bradley Lee Thomas

Bradley Lee Thomas, 58, president of Performance Duct Systems, passed away Friday, October 16, 2009. The son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Baker Thomas, he was a U.S. Navy veteran. funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 19 at Holland’s United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Montlawn Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Thomas; son, Jon Thomas and wife, Beth of Wake Forest; daughter, Erin Thomas Horne and husband, Daren of Fuquay-Varina; sister, Gail T. Marshall of Clayton; brother Dr. John Thomas of Wheat Ridge, CO; grandchildren, Landon and Reagan Thomas; nephew, Neal Anderson; nieces, Heather Bledsoe and Kristin Marshall. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, October 18 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner. Memorial contributions may be made in Brad’s name to Raleigh Rescue Mission, 314 E. Thelma Maynard Denning

Thelma Maynard Denning, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, October 30, 2009. A native of Sampson County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Janie Maynard. She was a charter member of Highland Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Rudolph Denning and a son, Elwood Denning. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 2 at Highland Baptist Church. Burial followed at Montlawn Memorial Park. Survivors include her loving son, Norvell Denning and wife, Becky of Raleigh; grandchildren, Vicki Denning Jones of Clayton, Allen Denning and wife, Ann of Florence, S.C. and Scott Denning and wife, Lesa of Benson; great-grandchildren, Tad Denning of Florence, S.C., Ashley, Connor and Ryan Denning, all of Benson. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 1 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner and at other times at the home of Norvell and Becky Denning. Ralph Franklin Sullivan, Jr

Ralph Franklin Sullivan, Jr., 68, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at his home surrounded by his friends and family. Born in Pitt County, he was the son of the late Ralph Franklin Sullivan, Sr. and Dorothy Dudley Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan graduated from Rose High School and East Carolina University. After enlisting in the US Army, he was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He owned the Archery Shop in Garner and was a retired construction superintendent. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed time with his wife and family at their farm in southwest Virginia. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 10 at Garner United Methodist Church. A graveside service followed at 3 p.m. Saturday at Centre Friends Meeting Cemetery, 325 NC Hwy. 62, Greensboro, NC 27406. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Jane Reynolds Sullivan; daughter, Lane Sullivan Anderson and husband, David Edgar Anderson of Manhattan, KS; son, Ralph Franklin “Terry” Sullivan, III and wife, Teresa Bynum Sullivan of Raleigh; sister Dorothy Lynn Joyner of Greenville; grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Lovelace and husband, Randy Darrell Lovelace, Jr., Holly Elizabeth Sullivan, Joshua Isaac Sullivan, all of Reidsville, N.C., John Henry Anderson and Jacob Nathaniel Anderson of Manhattan, KS; “adopted” daughter- in- law and son- in- law, Tara and Ken Germonto of Clayton, N.C. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. October 9 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner.
