Louise Carter

Winnabow - Louise Carter, age 66, of Winnabow passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Carter was born icon December 11, 1947 in New Hanover County, daughter of Helen Price and the late Tyson Peterson. Louise was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 341 and a Brunswick County Shrinette. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Carl Carter, her sister, Helen Catherine Atkinson, and her “Daddy”, Bill Price.

Survivors include her mother, Helen Price; three sons, Jimmy Caton and wife Donna, Paul Caton and girlfriend Kim Huffman, and Chris Carter and wife Jennifer, all of Winnabow; she was a Mom that she didn’t have to be to Beverly Edmonds and husband Bill of Belmont and Elizabeth Parrish and husband Chris of Charlotte, and Tina Overcash of Charlotte; two brothers, Pete Peterson of Winnabow and Bill Price, Jr. and wife Melissa of Princeton; two sisters, Linda Babbs and husband Gene of Virginia Beach and Brenda Reardon and husband Fred of Sneads Ferry; thirteen grandchildren, JP Caton and wife Shannon, Lynn Caton and boyfriend Cody, Samantha Grossman and husband Eric, Jacob Rabon, Tanner Caton, Tessa Jo Carter, Randi Carter, Carissa Carter, Wayne Berry, Jason Brookshire, Jessica Brookshire, Magan Overcash, and Alex Carter; and six great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00pm Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.

The family would like to thank the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the excellent care, compassion, and attention during this time. Donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, North Carolina 28401, or Sudan Shriners Hospital or flowers are welcome.

Philip “Wade” Gore

Winnabow - Philip “Wade” Gore, age 72, of Winnabow, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick.

Mr. Gore was born icon March 15, 1942 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, son of the late Willie Howard and Virginia Rycroft Gore. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country proudly. After Army life, his occupation was with his family and Southern Bell from which he retired. He was also a lifelong member of the Communication Workers of America.

Mr. Gore was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Franklin Gore, sister, Nancy “Ella Wee” Sullivan, and the love of his life for 50 years, his wife, Jeannette Mason Gore, who passed away in December 2012.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Sue Caton and husband Jimmy and Deborah Morin; sister Gail Gore and partner Evelyn of Bedford, Texas; five grandchildren, JP Caton and wife Shannon, Lynn Caton and boyfriend Cody Roberts, Tony Brown, Tabitha Estep and husband Adam, and Krista Gore; five great grandchildren, Kate Brown, Bubba Brown, Kileigh Smith, Lucas Estep, Alissa Caton, and two more on the way; several nieces and nephews, and also his “brother from another mother”, Don Stephenson and his family.

Graveside services will be at 4:00pm Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bolivia with Reverend Ronnie Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00pm Tuesday at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport prior to the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Tony Brown, JP Caton, Adam Estep, Chris Carter, Tim Ellis, and Cody Roberts. The family would like to thank the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the excellent care, compassion, and attention during this time. Dolores Schultz

Boiling Spring Lakes - Dolores Schultz, age 82, of Boiling Spring Lakes passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick in Bolivia, NC.

Mrs. Schultz was born icon March 17, 1932, daughter of the late Oscar and Blanche Hanus Edlund. She worked as a school secretary for many years and retired in 1994. Mrs. Schultz was a member of First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes where she was very active. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, crafting, knitting, and crocheting. Her sister Mildred Edlund preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband Dennis Schultz of the home; son, Dennis W. “Chip” Schultz of Beecher, Illinois; daughters Melinda Romo of Tinley Park, Illinois and Brenda Siraini and husband Ernie of Boiling Spring Lakes; four grandchildren, Nicol Romo, Amber Wojcinski and husband Jeff, Andrew Siraini, and Joe Romo; two great grandchildren, Penelope Grace Wojcinski and Naya Rosa Rosado.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 12, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to SECU Hospice of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.

Rev. William “Bill” W. Rice

Boiling Spring Lakes - Reverend William “Bill” Winfred Rice, age 80, was called home to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.

Reverend Rice was born icon in White Oak (Bladen County), North Carolina on July 29, 1933, son of the late Tuttle B. and Lucy Rigsbee Rice. Bill was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Berlin Brigade in Germany from 1953 – 1955. The Lord called him to become a minister in 1970. He pastored many churches across North Carolina all of whom were very dear to him. Warrensville Baptist Church in Warrensville, North Carolina and Bethel Baptist Church in Southport were two in particular that meant a lot to him. He was the pastor to Bethel for 15 years. The church and the members held a special place in his heart. “Pastor Rice” led many souls to the Lord, proudly offering service, prayer, and guidance to all his congregations. He was a man of sharing faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s love and the beauty and peace that awaited him in heaven. He was preceded in death by a loving wife of 39 years and loving mother to his five children, Hulda Coble Rice, a sister Ruth Zamsky, and brother Mike Rice.

He leaves behind a loving wife of 12 years, Bonnie Rice; five children, Alan Rice of Roseboro; Cindy Rice Phipps of Southport, Aaron Rice and wife Bethany of Boiling Spring Lakes, Bruce Rice and wife Tina of Southport, Amy Rice Clewis and husband Bart of Greensboro; two stepsons, Albert Rogers and wife Christine and Kevin Rogers, both of Boiling Spring Lakes; six grandchildren, Lori Smith and husband Shelby of Wilmington, Audra O’Connor and husband Dan of Jacksonville, Kimberly Monaghan and husband Joe of Wilmington, Brandon Rice and wife Kimberly of Jacksonville, Iain Rice and Hannah Rice, both of Boiling Spring Lakes; four step grandchildren, Allison Rogers, Garret Rogers, Elena Rogers and Dylan Rogers, all of Boiling Spring Lakes; eight great grandchildren, Kinsey Smith and Gabe Smith of Wilmington, and Daniel O’Connor of Jacksonville, Sawyer Monaghan and Asher Monaghan of Wilmington, Maddi Rice and Abigail Rice of Jacksonville.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will be at 3:00 pm in the Bethlehem Cemetery in White Oak, North Carolina with US Army graveside rites.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, Southport.

Gale Helton Hess

Southport - Gale Helton Hess, age 61, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at her residence. She was surrounded by her beloved dogs, her husband and her brother. Gale fought a gallant, courageous, painful, and brave battle with breast cancer over the past 13 months.

Gale was born icon in Atlanta, Georgia on May 12, 1953, the daughter of the late Harold W. Helton and Dorothy Reeves Helton.

Gale is a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1975. She received her Master’s Degree in Education at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC in 1986. Gale taught school in the Wake County Public School System, starting at Willow Springs Elementary School; she then taught at Wendell Elementary School and retired from Brassfield Elementary School in June of 2007. After her retirement, she tutored for two years at Virginia Williams Elementary School in Bolivia, NC.

Gale was an extremely dedicated and conscientious teacher who worked long and hard to challenge her students to achieve success in all areas of life. She also inspired many of her students to become elementary teachers, and they are successful teachers today.

Gale also loved working in her yard planting and tending to her many beautiful flowers and plants.

Gale was a very loving and caring person who was a great influence on her husband during his teaching and coaching career. She attended all of his athletic events, both home and away, for over 30 years. Gale was loved and respected by many of her husband’s basketball and soccer student-athletes. Gale also had a tremendous love for animals, especially her beloved dogs and cats. Gale volunteered her time to helping rescued dogs and cats find their forever homes. Gale adopted many dogs throughout her life and loved and cared dearly for them all. She is now in Heaven with her many dogs and cats who preceded her in death. The school bell is ringing in Heaven today. God has a new elementary teacher for all his young angels.

Gale is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Chuck Hess; her brother, Gary Helton, and his wife, Nancy, of Raleigh, NC; her niece, Caroline Helton, of Raleigh, NC; her four beloved puppies, Ellie, Greta, Carlos, and Walter; as well as her many friends, co-workers, and students.

A celebration of Gale’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport, NC. The services will be conducted by the Reverend David Haley, Pastor of Oxford United Methodist Church in Oxford, NC.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Life Center of Brunswick and New Hanover County for all their kindness and support during Gale’s last two months of life. A special thanks to Hospice nurse Sandy Duncan, who was instrumental in helping Gale to be able to finish her journey at her home surrounded by her beloved puppies, her loving husband Chuck, and her brother Gary.

Melvin A. Scherer — Cpt. USMC, Retired

Mr. Melvin Allen Scherer age 81 of Leland died Saturday May 31, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Scherer was born icon in Hancock, New York on April 16, 1933 and was the son of the late John Scherer Jr. and Myrtle Conklin Scherer. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa (Sissy) Mobley, grandson, Clay Scherer, siblings, Martha Abell, Milton Scherer, Norman Scherer, Ben Scherer, Harold Scherer.

Mr. Scherer was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp., retiring after 20 years of faithful and dedicated service. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and the Military Officer’s Association and was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Shelva Jane Hewett Scherer, children, Gene Scherer (Sheila), Julie Lytton, Loretta White (Jerry), William Sawyer, Lena Pate (Lee), Roberta Wersinger; two sisters, Marjorie Wormuth, Patricia Petersen; two brothers, Victor and Dean Scherer; very special sister in-law, Pat Hewett; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held Thursday June 5th 2014 at 3pm at the Chapel of Peacock-Newnam & White funeral service with Reverend David Peterson officiating. Full military honors will follow.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
