Dessie Arlene Rice

Roseboro, NC - Dessie Arlene Rice went to be with our Lord Saturday, April 20th. She passed away at home.

She was born icon in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on June 12, 1953. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lucy Sloan of Lascassas, TN., her twin sister, Darlene Cooper also of Lascassas, TN. She is survived by her husband, Alan Rice of Roseboro, N.C., two children, Keith Klink, Jr., of Maysville, N.C., Kevin Klink of Jacksonville, N.C., two stepchildren, Audra O’Conner of Jacksonville, N.C. and Brandon Rice of Jacksonville, N.C., ten grandchildren, a brother, Lynn Sloan of Murfreesboro, TN., and a sister, Velma McKinney of Murfreesboro, TN.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at 2:00PM, at Peacock Newnam and White funeral service Chapel, Southport, N.C. with Reverend Bill Wrenn officiating.

Graveside services will follow at 4:30PM at Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery, Hwy 53 White Oak, N.C.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Chapel located at 1411 North Howe Street, Southport, N.C.

Virginia Mae Grossman

Oak Island - Virginia Mae Grossman, 91 of Oak Island passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.

Mrs. Grossman was born icon November 6, 1921 in Pittsburg, PA, daughter of the late Vincent and Elva Hermann Davis. She was an avid bridge player and also enjoyed the beach. Mrs. Grossman was preceded in death by her husband Charles.

Surviving are two sons Ronald Grossman and wife Barbara of Red Lion, PA and Richard Grossman of Philadelphia, PA; two daughters Lynne Kracht and husband Ronald of Oak Island and Leslie Surgest and husband Michael of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers Albert Davis of New York City, NY and Charles Davis of Centerville, OH; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

To honor Mrs. Grossman’s request, no services will be held.

Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.

Eugene Clemmons

Bolivia - Robert “Eugene” Clemmons, 82 of Bolivia, passed away on April 10, 2013 at his home. Mr. Clemmons was born icon January 25, 1931 in Brunswick County, son of the late Ralph and Dorothy Kirby Clemmons.

Mr. Clemmons served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point for 32 years (1956 – 1988) as a fire and tug boat captain. Mr. Clemmons was a long time member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was currently a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mr. Clemmons loved John Deere tractors, Carolina Tarheel basketball, and most of all, he was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Elizabeth Ballard, and a son-in-law Terry Cate.

Surviving is his wife Betty Lewis Clemmons whom he married on May 12, 1956; a son Eddie Clemmons and wife Tina; two daughters Cheryl Clemmons Brock and husband Rodney, and Kaye Clemmons Cate, all of Bolivia; a brother Fred Clemmons and wife Jeanette of Wilmington; and five grandchildren Jennifer Brock Knotts and husband Tyler, Sarah Brock, Bobby Cate, Eugene Watts, and Eric Clemmons.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 12, 2013 at Antioch Baptist Church in Bolivia with Reverend Monroe Cooke and Reverend Anthony Clemmons officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Allen Britton, Ben Williams, Steve Brown, Josh Cumby, Gerald Ballard, and Brett Ballard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.

Sandy Moon Garrett

St. James - Saundra “Sandy” Moon Garrett, 74 of St. James passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at her home. Mrs. Garrett was born icon June 12, 1938 in Harrisburg, PA the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Dietrich.

Sandy graduated from John Harris High School and New York School of Design. She had been and American Airline stewardess in the 1960’s. She had resided in The Bucks County, PA and Lambertville, NJ before taking an early retirement from IBM to move to North Carolina where she lived the last 15 years. Sandy was a classical pianist, having studied at The Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She loved traveling, reading, playing cards, watching birds from her back porch, and her grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband of 30 years, Gerald R. “Jerry” Garrett; two daughters, Victoria Shaudys of Bristol, PA and Heather Baker and husband Paul of Pennsburg, PA; three step-daughters Lisa Reilly and husband Steve of Levittown, PA Linda Costantini and Laura Garrett, both of Yardley, PA; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The family will have a visitation at Peacock – Newnam & White funeral service from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday, April 13, 2013.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Wrightsville Beach Road, Suite 111, Wilmington, NC 28403.

Robert “Bob” Kleine

St. James - Robert George Kleine, 72, of St. James Plantation formerly of Sudbury, Massachusetts, passed away on April 3, 2013 at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Mr. Kleine was born icon September 18, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, son of the late George and Agatha Kleine. He graduated from Carroll College with a Bachelor of Science degree and from Illinois Institute of Technology with an Electrical Engineering degree. He received his MBA from Stanford University.

He is survived by Suzanne, his wife of 51 years, his four daughters Laura, Lisa, Amy, and Julie, their spouses, twelve grandchildren and his brother and sister in law, Richard and Virginia Kleine.

His career as an executive in the computer industry spanned thirty years, culminating with the acquisition of his own telecommunications company in the early 1990s.

Bob divided his time between St. James and Balch Lake in Maine. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, being outdoors, lake life, boating and fishing. He was a member of the Hackers golf club. Bob’s beautiful handmade Adirondack chairs grace his North Carolina and Maine homes and he loved nothing more than sitting in his chairs, viewing the water and visiting with family and friends. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who was sought out for his sage advice and ability to listen well. He will be missed by all who were touched by his presence.

A private memorial service will be held in Southport, NC.

Mary “Ellen” Miller

Southport - Mary “Ellen” Miller, 98 of Southport, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Carillon Assisted Living Center. Mrs. Miller was born icon September 19, 1916 in Illinois, the daughter of the late Homer and Mary Bell Wilson.

Mrs. Miller was a long time resident of Rock Island, Illinois where her husband, the late Dr. James A. Miller, had his Urology practice. She was a very active volunteer for many different organizations in Rock Island. Upon their retirement, they moved to Vero Beach, Florida. There they were members of the Vero Beach Yacht Club and spent twenty five years until the passing of her husband. Mrs. Miller moved to St. James in 2004 and later to Carillon Assisted Living. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport.

Surviving are her three daughters, Mary Jean Nay of Bolivia, North Carolina, Patricia Ann Biemiller of Lilburn, Georgia, and Margaret Lynn Barkley of Beaverton, Oregon; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Brittany Carol Rayl

Supply - Brittany Carol Rayl, age 18, of Supply passed away Monday, May 27, 2013.

Brittany was born icon in New Hanover County on August 16, 1994, daughter of Jeffrey Rayl and Pam Jesmer Sullivan. She is a 2012 graduate of South Brunswick High School and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Brittany loved the outdoors where she could fish, hunt and be on the beach but also loved sitting on a blanket in her front yard with her son. She also enjoyed going drag racing with her granddaddy. Brittany was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Tom Waldington.

Survivors include her father Jeff Rayl and wife Sissy of Supply; mother Pam Sullivan and husband Billy of Winnabow; one son Brantley Clayton Rayl; paternal grandparents Curtis and Betty Rayl of Bolivia; maternal grandmother Catherine Waldington of Wilmington; step grandmother Eleanor Sullivan of Winnabow; two brothers Charles Andrew Rayl of Supply and Jeffrey Rayl, Jr. and fiance’ Ashley Larson of Maco; three nephews Mason Rayl, Ayden Rayl, and Kameron Rayl; one niece Alysia Rayl; several aunts, uncles and cousins; best friends Brittany Thompson and Hannah Davis and many other friends who will truly miss her.

For Brittany’s sake, please wear your seatbelt.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Antioch Baptist Church with Deacon Joe Cain officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.
