Christie Lakis of Columbus OH; and Crystal Terhune e al Saraireh (Mo e al Saraireh), and Blaid Terhune, both of Mahopac, NY, two nephews, and many friends.

Terhune was a longtime resident of Mahopac, NY, and familiar figure in the Putnam County political and civic landscape of the 1970’s, 80’s and early 90’s. Outspoken and dedicated to his community, Terhune was elected to three terms as Town of Carmel Councilman, and afterwards was appointed to the Carmel Architecture Review Board. As a sincere believer in the power of grassroots political action, Terhune served as Chairman of the Town of Carmel Democratic Committee for several years, and as a District Committeeman. On the state level, then Governor Hugh Carey appointed Terhune to the Taconic State Parks Commission, the governing authority that monitors and maintains the natural and cultural attractions along that highway’s corridor, where he served for eight years.

Terhune was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Mahopac Falls for almost 30 years, as a Ruling Elder on the Board of Session and a member of the Stewardship Committee. He was also active in the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department, holding the position of President. The department will honor his memory by displaying patriotic bunting and flying its flag at half-mast for 30 days. Terhune was proud of his seven years’ service in the U.S. Navy, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1954, and maintaining membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars until his death.

Following his military service, Terhune received a degree in mechanical engineering from The Pratt Institute of Technology in Brooklyn, NY, and began a 38-year career at IBM as a Senior Associate Engineer at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights.

In his retirement years in Southport, NC, Terhune pursued his passion for art, painting and carving many of the varied coastal sites and wildlife scenes of the Carolinas that were constant inspirations to him. His work received amateur recognition and it was displayed in several local galleries and shops. Terhune continued his involvement with civic activities, particularly as Vice President of “The 55 and over Club”, volunteer work with the Senior Center at Oak Island, bowling leagues, and his support of local community arts activities.

“Charlie” as he was called, was known for his sense of humor and strong opinions. He enjoyed travelling and was particularly moved by his trips to the beaches of Normandy, other European historic and artistic sites, as well as the natural splendor of the Caribbean and Alaska, and the significant personal connection he felt towards the heritage of Ireland and the UK.

The family will conduct a private commemorative ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Terhune’s name to the Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport, PO Box 10412, 204 Moore Street, Southport, NC 28461, attention Bob Springle, Administrator (southportfom@gmail.com).
