Alfred Paul Rignoli
May 7, 1918 – January 14, 2015

Alfred Paul Rignoli, 96, of Wilson passed away Wednesday. His funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Ronnie Clemmons and the Rev. Steve Stephenson will officiate.

The family will receive friends 10 – 10:45 a.m. Monday prior to the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Fred was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of WWII. He worked as a jewelry chain designer with Armbrust Chain Company in Providence, Rhode Island for thirty years. In 1983, he and his wife retired to Wilson, where he worked as a groundskeeper at the Wilson Country Club until he was eighty-five years of age. Fred continued working for Wilson County until he reached the age of ninety. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Fred is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Lillian Jacques Rignoli of the home; his daughter, Sheila R. Matthews of Wilson; his granddaughter, April M. Guidetti and husband, Richard of La Habra, California; his grandson, Jason D. Matthews and fiancée, Christie Hendricks of Wilson; his great-grandsons, Alexander D. Matthews and Collin D. Matthews and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Phyllis DeCaesar Rignoli.

Gladys Lucas Shadding
July 20, 1931 – December 13, 2014

Gladys Everette Lucas Shadding, 83, of Lucama passed away Saturday. Her funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Lucas Family Cemetery, Blalock Road, Lucama. The Rev. Dr. De Wayne Eakes will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday evening immediately following the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at 6322 Bryan Road, Lucama.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Billy Shadding of the home; her daughters, Ruth Lucas Bailey (Tim) of Lucama and Rebecca “Eve” Lucas Taylor of Lucama; her son, Charles Lucas (Gina) of Wilson; her grandchildren, Nikki Combs Repess (Steven), Katherine Bailey, Caroline Bailey, Bridget Lucas, Tyler Taylor and Taylor Boone; her three great-grandchildren; her two sisters; and her three brothers.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Redding Carrol Lucas, Sr.; her son, Redding Carrol Lucas, Jr.; her parents, Ruth and Rufus Everette and her two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Meals on Wheels, 2306 Cedar Run Place, Wilson, NC 27895 or WilMed Hospice, 1705 Tarboro Street S, Wilson, NC 27893.

Joann Marie Miller
April 7, 1939 – December 10, 2014

Joann Marie Miller, 75, of Linden, TN, passed away Wednesday. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in the Silas Lucas Cemetery, Lucama. The Rev. Dr. De Eakes will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Herbert Henry Harriss, III
February 23, 1937 – December 9, 2014

Herbert Henry Harriss, III, 77, of Angier, passed away Tuesday. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Angier United Methodist Church, 278 S. Wilma St., Angier, NC, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Maplewood Cemetery, 400 College St., Wilson, NC.

The family will receive friends 2:30 – 3 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Henry was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Following graduation from UNC, Henry served in the United States Navy, where he was a graduate of the OCS. He graduated from Campbell University with an MBA degree at the age of 55. Henry was an active member of Angier United Methodist Church. He was very involved in volunteer work, both at the church and in the community. He enjoyed playing golf and watching Carolina basketball and football games. Henry was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Surviving are his wife of fifty years, Patricia Bridgers Harriss of the home; two daughters, Mary Snow Hill and husband, Bill of Greenville, and Bridget Stewart and husband, George of Angier; two sons, William Harriss and wife, Cristen of Clayton, and Nathan Harriss and wife, Wendy of Key Largo, FL; three grandsons, Matthew, George Jr., and Zander; a sister, Snow Vann of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Ted Harriss of Richmond, VA and Robert Harriss of San Antonio, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Henry Harriss, Jr. and Mariana Hooks Harriss.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Angier United Methodist Church, 278 S. Wilma St., Angier, NC 27501.

Arrangements are by Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

John Thomas Rowe
June 30, 1941 – December 4, 2014

“Mr. Jack” passed on December 4, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. He was a gallant fighter who passed at home surrounded by loving family. His memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.

He leaves his wife of fifty-two years, Kathryn Lanaghan Rowe of the home. His daughter, Stephanie Rowe Lalli (Mike) of Florida; his sons, Shaun Rowe (Elizabeth DeBerry) of Wilson, Chris Rowe (Tanya Verrinder) of Wendell and Thom Rowe (Gloria Bass) of Wilson; his grandchildren, Danielle, Evan and Reghan Griffith, Chase Langley, Amethyest (Amie) Rowe, Patrick Rowe, Claire Rowe, Brittany and Garrett Rowe; his sisters, Janice Rowe Plante (Bill), Charlotte Rowe Bambic (Ric), Cheryl Rowe Wells (Scott) and Kim Rowe Beveridge (Jack); his many nieces and nephews and his constant and faithful canine companion, Zeke.

He was preceded in death by parents, Cleo and John W. Rowe.

“Mr. Jack” retired from “Jacks Friendly Mart” only when he became too ill to continue. He and “Zeke” ran the store with Jack’s special kindness. Many of the grandchildren got their first work opportunities under Pap Pap’s care. He taught them his work ethic and showed them how to treat all people.

Mary Elizabeth Etheridge Hooks
July 2, 1926 – December 12, 2014

Mary Elizabeth Etheridge Hooks, 88, of Wilson passed away Friday. Her funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson. The Rev. Paul Dunham will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at her residence.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Belinda H. Bunn and husband, Kenneth of Wilson; her son, Randy W. Hooks and wife, Terri of Wilson; her granddaughters, Amy Evans and husband, Hank of Wilson, Jenny Sabella and husband, Phil of Wilson; her grandson, Jason Starling and wife, Stacy of Atlanta, Georgia; her great-grandchildren, Grace, Jesse, Zachary, Philip, Evan and Steven, and her sister, Molly E. Archibeque of Glen Allen, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hooks.

Annie Laurie Cowan Cockrell
December 21, 1925 –November 24, 2014

Annie Laurie Cowan Cockrell of Wilson passed away peacefully at her home on November 24th. She was born icon December 21, 1925, in Powellsville, North Carolina (Bertie County), to her parents, James S. and Myrtle Myers Cowan. Annie Laurie was predeceased by her husband, Onnie Robert Cockrell, Jr.; her daughter, Patricia Ann Cockrell; her parents; four brothers, Rupert Earl Cowan, Robert L. Cowan, James A. Cowan, and Dr. Leon K. Cowan; and one sister, Myrtle Old Cowan. She is survived by five nephews, seven nieces, and many cousins.

Annie Laurie graduated from Powellsville High School. She attended Louisburg College and received her AB degree in Primary Education at Atlantic Christian College. Her teaching career included schools in Askewville, Powellsville, Rock Ridge, and Gardner Elementary School in Wilson. In 1975, she was named Teacher of the Year for Wilson County. Annie retired in 1986.

Telling stories and speaking to senior groups was a favorite activity for Ann. She was active in Bible study groups at her church and also in Cerebral Palsy organizations and telethons. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Wilson.

Annie Laurie’s funeral service will be held at Joyner’s Funeral Home in Wilson at 2:00 p.m. on December 18th. A visitation will precede the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Marsh Swamp Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Rock Ridge, with a reception immediately following at the church.
