Owen T. Wise
September 1, 1929 – June 23, 2013

Owen T. Wise, 83, of Wilson passed away Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Mark Woolard will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday evening immediately following the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway and other times will be at the residence.

Owen served his country honorably as a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a District Sales Manager with Western and Southern Financial Group. His memberships included the Evening Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Owen was a Kentucky Colonel. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Celia Simmons Wise; two daughters, Sue W. Daniels and husband, Michael of Wanchese and D. Kay Jennings and husband, Mark of Christiansburg, VA; six grandchildren, Brodie Witt, Logan Witt, Joshua Daniels, Micah Daniels, Sarah Joy Daniels, and Sadie Daniels; two stepdaughters, Amber I. Varnell and husband, Jim of Elm City and April I. Ricklefs and husband, Dick of Charleston, SC; and two step-grandchildren, Misty Varnell and Dana Varnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlcie and Mable W. Wise.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed to Stoneybrook Christian Church, 3502 Airport Blvd., Wilson, NC 27896.

Kathy Diane Summerlin Deans
July 3, 1959 – June 10, 2013

Kathy Diane Summerlin Deans, 53, of Whitakers passed away on Monday.

Kathy is survived by her sons, John Rock Deans of Whitakers and Daren Dale Deans of Bailey; her sisters, Effie Summerlin Lamm of Wilson, Patricia Braswell and husband, Kenneth of Elm City and Janice Summerlin Killebrew and husband, Jonathan of Elm City and her brother, Harold Taylor and wife, Sandra of Wilson.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, John Alfred Deans; her son, Brandon Scott Deans; her parents, Omer Batchelor Summerlin and Bertis Summerlin and her brother, Tommy Batchelor.

James Wilbert Boykin
May 1, 1929 – June 28, 2013

James Wilbert Boykin, 84, of Wilson passed away Friday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Winstead United Methodist Church, Wilson. The Rev. Paul Dunham will officiate. Interment will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Dr. Morgan Daughety will officiate.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Winstead United Methodist Church, 1407 Tarboro Street, Wilson.

James was a true Southern gentleman; he never met a stranger. He was known as Squirt or Jim. His mother called him by his middle name, Wilbert. Whenever his wife answered the phone, she could tell who was calling by the name they used.

James worked with DuPont in Kinston for 31 years. He was a passionate music lover; his knowledge of jazz was unrivaled. Later he became a bluegrass devotee and was instrumental in founding the “Barn”, a venue for bluegrass musicians and fans in Wilson County.

The jazz and bluegrass worlds have suffered a loss, a connoisseur of these art forms, a man who could have taught music appreciation in any university, and ambassador but most of all, a fan.

He was a husband to Nancy for 62 years, a father to Catherine and Susan, a grandfather to Cullen and a second father to Jim and Richard. He will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Winstead United Methodist Church, 1407 Tarboro Street, Wilson, NC 27893 and Wilmed Hospice, 1705 Tarboro Street S, Wilson, NC 27893.

Royce Wayne Baines
November 19, 1946 – June 17, 2013

Royce Wayne Baines, 66, of Bailey passed away Monday. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Rocky Mount Memorial Park, 4454 Dortches Blvd, Hwy 43 N, Rocky Mount. The Rev. Kenneth D. Benton will officiate.

The family will receive friends 4 – 6 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Royce was survived by his son, David Wayne Baines, stationed in Japan; his grandson, Mason Baines of Elm City; his granddaughter, Anna Grace Baines of Elm City; his sisters, Faye B. Batchelor and husband, Leon of Wilson, Joy Murphrey Castleton and husband, Bill of Greenville, Pam B. Gardner of Rocky Mount and Hope B. King of Durham, and his brother, Dwight Baines and wife, Donna of Farmville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Dumie Baines and his brothers, Kenneth, Larry and Willie Baines.

Katie Gold Brewer Farris
November 10, 1916 – May 31, 2013

Katie Gold Brewer Farris, 96, of Wilson peacefully joined her Lord on May 31, 2013.

Katie was born icon November 10, 1916 in Wilson County to the late Mena Thompson Brewer and the late Joseph Edgar Brewer. She married the love of her life, Mitchell Paul Farris on November 11, 1942 and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Katie was a life-long member of New Hope Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Katie was very devout in her faith and love of God, enjoying quiet time reading her Bible and studying. She grew up in New Hope Community and attended the Wilson County schools, graduating from Atlantic Christian College with a double major in Math and Science. She earned the highest grade point average ever received at that time and graduated magna cum laude. Katie went on to share her special talents by teaching at Wilson Mills, Charles L. Coon, Ralph L. Fike and Darden High School and at Wilson County Technical School.

After retirement Katie spent time volunteering in the community at the hospital and in the soup kitchen. She enjoyed her Book Club and Bridge Clubs. Katie had a bright and inquisitive mind and enjoyed discussing topics from microbiology to world affairs and politics. Katie never played basketball but loved to watch her favorite college teams play. Another favorite past time was working in her rose garden and cooking for her family. She was a wonderful cook, fixing good southern food and Lebanese dishes that drew friends and family to the Farris dining table. Katie loved Sunday afternoons visiting with dear sisters and rolling the Aggravation dice at the kitchen table.

Katie instilled in us all the value of God and family. Spending time with her children, siblings, in-laws and her grandchildren with the extra bonus of great-grandchildren was a treat for all. She never tired of being surrounded by family and often claimed her family was one of God’s greatest blessings. Katie was ever grateful to have married into the Farris family and loved each of them.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Paul Farris; her great-grandson, Samuel Paul Johnson of Statesville and sisters and brothers; Selby Brewer, Bessie Mae Thompson, Juanita Robbins, Mena Joyce Boyette, Joseph Edgar Brewer “T”, Col. Lonnie Carl Brewer and Dixie Peacock and her daughter-in-law, Kathy Farris all of Wilson.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Dew Strickland of Wilson, sister-in-law, Mary Gray Brewer of Wilson. Katie leaves behind her loving children, Joseph Paul Farris and wife, Kim of Wilson, Linda Farris Johnson and husband, Frank of Statesville, David Mitchell Farris and wife, Marianne of Rocky Mount, Sarah Farris Smith and husband, Myron of Benson; her grandchildren, Mitchell Paul Johnson and wife, Anna of Statesville, Mary Catherine Martin and husband, Nick of Troutman, Kate Farris Tharin and husband, James of Rocky Mount, Christopher N. Smith and wife, Arlene of Smithfield, Paula D. Farris of Wilson, Shelley Barnes of Raleigh, Rebecca Bissette of Wilson, Jim Bissette of Wilson, David Mitchell Smith of Benson and Linda Farris Smith of Benson; her great-grandchildren, William Francis and Mary Emma Johnson of Statesville, Katie Magnolia, Savannah Rose and Evelyn Louise Martin of Troutman and Mari Robin and Frances Martha Tharin of Rocky Mount and Nolan Farris Smith of Smithfield.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Hope Baptist Church and the family will receive following the service. Interment will be private.

The Farris family would like to send a special thanks to Beth Bailey, Audrey Edmundson and Stella Richardson for their loving care to our mother and to Spring Arbor of Wilson.

Betty Madella “Del” Newcomb Hinnant
February 25, 1938 – March 27, 2013

Betty Madella “Del” Newcomb Hinnant, 75, of Lucama passed away Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Whitley will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

“Del” is survived by her daughter, Tiana Madella Hinnant of Wake Forest; her granddaughter, Gracelyn Madella Irvin and her grandsons, Addison Lloyd Irvin and Ansel James Irvin all of Wake Forest; her sisters, Donna Tripp of Ayden, Jean Tripp and Bonny Shimada both of Ormondsville, and Caroline van der Stokker of Morehead City, and her brothers, John Newcomb of Williamston and William Newcomb of Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lloyd Hinnant; her parents, James and Betty Mae Newcomb; her sisters, Anne Kenward and Wanda Newcomb; and her brother, James Newcomb, Jr.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.

Roy Palmer Grady
January 15, 1942 – April 20, 2013

Roy Palmer Grady, 71, of Wilson passed away Saturday. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway. The family will receive friends following the service.

Roy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He will be thought of often with loving and heartfelt memories, he will be greatly missed. Roy worked at Swift, Dinner Bell, John Murrell and Smithfield Packing.

Roy is survived by his wife, Ann Grady of the home; his daughters, Lorrie Atkins and husband, Jimmy of Benson, Pam Dehici and husband, Jamel of Bailey, Audrey May and husband, Johnny of Black Creek, Laura Carter of Burlington, and Amy Dunn of Wilson; his grandchildren, Casey Combs of Panama Beach, Florida, Nicholas-Brandon Worrell and wife, Mary of Wilson, and Traci Dunn of Wilson; his great-grandchildren, Levi and Madison Worrell of Wilson; his sister, Sue Eason of Lucama and his brother, Jimmy Gates of Black Creek.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Carolina Donor Services, 909 East Arlington Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
