HUDSON - Mrs. Anne Ledford Downs, 76, of 4114 Kendell Place, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be tonight at 8 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Don Ingle and Dale Leonhardt officiating. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

Robert Doster
SHELBY - Mr. Robert Eugene Doster, 67, of 204 Palmer Street, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at home.
In addition to his parents, Raymond and Fola Greene Doster, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Doster; a son, Raymond Doster; two sisters, Myrtle Holland and Bertha Williams; and a brother, Charles Doster.
He is survived by a son, Bobby Doster of California; a daughter, Robin Doster of California; three brothers, Raymond Doster Jr. of Gastonia, Max Doster of Crouse and Billy Doster of Florida; a sister, Geraldine Shepherd of the home; two stepsisters, Tempie Bridges of Crouse and Nancy Sarvis of Shelby; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Doster Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.

Jim Ervin
SHELBY - Mr. James "Jim" Harris Ervin, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Cleveland County, and retired from Coca Cola Bottling Company where he was supervisor in the bottling room. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and served in the Air Force during World War II.
In addition to his parents, Meek Wilson and Annie Whitener Ervin, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Freddie Ervin, Elbert Ervin, Ray Ervin, Gene Ervin and Ed Ervin; and two sisters, Mabel Ervin Blanton and Ola Ervin Francis.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel P. Ervin, of the home; two sisters, Emma E. Lohr of Cherryville and Betty E. Hill of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two sisters-in-law, Emma Ervin and Hattie Ervin.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Len Byers officiating. A private burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at Cleveland Funeral Services.

'Shep' Hamrick
HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Mr. Leander Shepard "Shep" Hamrick, 76, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002.
Born in Goldsboro, he grew up in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School. In 1950 he graduated from Wake Forest University, as his father had done before him in 1910. He served as a tail gunner on a "Liberator" bomber during World War II. He was retired from Ralston Purina Company where he provided leadership in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina and South Carolina for 35 years as district manager.
Known as "Big Shep," he was a devoted family man and regularly attended West Hartsville Baptist Church. He enjoyed sports, especially Wake Forest Demon Deacon sports, gardening, boating, hunting, fishing, and animals, and in his earlier days he was a horseman.
In addition to his parents, Otto Vetus and Carolyn Mayes Hamrick, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Marang Hamrick, a brother, O.V. Hamrick Jr., and two sisters, Kathleen Hamrick Davis and Sarah Lee Hamrick Kiser.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Shep and Martha Hamrick of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Bart Norwood of Hartsville, S.C., and Marilynn and Harry Ware of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren, Amanda Hamrick, Street Hamrick, JoAnna Hamrick, Sarah Lynn Norwood, Barrett Norwood, Amelia Norwood, Henry Ware, Shep Ware and Robert Ware; and beloved friend, Elsie Allen Byrd of Hartsville, S.C.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Shelby with the Rev. John Boggs officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church or to Wake Forest University.
Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Arthur Hoey
SHELBY - Mr. Arthur Edward Hoey, 70, of 2320 Mason St., died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, Md.
A native of Shelby, he was a son of the late John and Amanda Posey Hoey.
He was retired from Carolina Freight after 33 years as a truck driver. He also worked as a taxi driver for Carolina Cab Company and was a member of Eskridge Grove Baptist Church, where he was a trustee.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Boykins Hoey; two sons, Larry and Charles Hoey; and three brothers, J.B. Hoey, C.J. Hoey and Clyde Hoey.
He is survived by six children from his union to Nellene Brisco Hoey of Forestville, Md., including two sons, John Hoey of Shelby and Robin Hoey of Forestville; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Cheryl and Charles Sowell of Colorado Springs, Colo., Janice Jackson of Waldorf, Md., Kimberly Hoey-Goldring of Hyattsville, Md., and Teresa and Gary Thompson of Washington, D.C.; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Earl Hoey of Charlotte; James and Margaret Hoey, Anthony Hoey and Emmett and Maeola Hoey, all of Shelby; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ethel Dawkins and Benjamin and Selma Brewton, all of Shelby; three other sisters-in-law, Helen, Sarah and Mary Sue Hoey, all of Shelby; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Strickland Maddox officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Nick Stanley
SHELBY - Mr. Arvol "Nick" Stanley, 88, formerly of 797 Westview St., and recently of White Oak Manor in Shelby and Shelby Manor, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Blue Ridge, Ga., he was a son of the late Orville R. and Hattie Burleson Stanley. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from Dover Mill after 31 years as a loom fixer. He belonged to Dover Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was a former deacon there. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob Stanley, Tom Stanley, Cecil Stanley and Roy Davis; and two sisters, Bertie S. Burgess and Tildie S. Cochran.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marie Jones Stanley of White Oak Manor in Shelby; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronald L. Stanley of Mountain View, Ark., and Kenneth A. and Suzanne Stanley of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce S. and Richard Morgan of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Vearl Stanley of Lavonia, Ga.; six grandchildren, Judy Morgan Wright and her husband, Barry, of Lake Bowen, S.C., Sherri Morgan Beam and her husband, Zeb III, of Shelby, Rick Morgan and his wife, Georgann of Waco, Michael Stanley and his wife, Jennifer, of Burbank, Calif., Nicole Stanley of Thousand Oaks and Lisa Stanley of San Diego, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley Wright, Lance Wright, Morgan Beam, Zee Beam and Emily Clary and her husband, Wesley.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Dover Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ervin Price and Phil Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 6:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Joyce and Richard Morgan.
Memorials may be made to Dover Baptist Church building fund, 1501 Polkville Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Pearl Banks
VALE - Mrs. Pearl K. Banks, 96, of 1492 Cat Square Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at her home.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. R.W. Fuller and Benny Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.
Ebony & White's Funeral Service of Lincolnton is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Bridges
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Doris Summerlin Bridges, 73, of 112 N. Oakwood Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Grady and Grace Lee Summerlin. She belonged to First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain and was co-owner of WKMT radio station in Kings Mountain.
She is survived by her husband, Jonas Bridges of Kings Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Denise Bridges of Atlanta; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam B. and Gary Looby of Charlotte; and a grandchild, Jonas R. Bridges III.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Sloan officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home.

Max Fortenberry
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Max Gene Fortenberry, 63, of 2748 Clineland Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover.
A graveside funeral will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Fallston, with the Revs. David Fambrough and Philip Deitz officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.

Beatrice Lee
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Beatrice Campbell Lee, 82, of 1410 W. Stagecoach Trail, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she born Jan. 19, 1920, the daughter of the late John Coeron and Julia Belle Grayson Campbell. She was in the food service industry and retired from the Burns High School lunchroom. She was also a former co-owner and operator of Lee Dairy. She was a member of Palm Tree United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, a member of the United Methodist Women, Sunset Sunday School Class and Silver Palms Senior Group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert E. Lee; a daughter, Diane Huskey, a daughter-in-law, Marcelle Lee; a great-grandson, Kyle Willis; three brothers, Rush Campbell, John Campbell and Charles Campbell; and two sisters, Ruth E. Campbell and Frances Dedmon .
She is survived by her son, Don Lee of Lawndale; a son-in-law and his wife, Johnny and Rhonda Huskey of Lawndale; two sisters, Bessie Robinson of Slater, S.C., and Margaret C. Hubbard of Lawndale; three grandchildren, Neal Huskey, Derrick Lee and his wife, Lori, and Donna Willis; and three great-grandchildren, Donald Lee, Kristy Willis and Darrell Willis.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Palm Tree United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mike Harrill and Jack Lutz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 7 at the Stamey Funeral Home.

'Boge' Workman
VALE - Mr. J.E. "Boge" Workman, 82, of 2486 Peeler Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Lincoln Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born March 24, 1919, the son of the late John Edgar and Zula Ingle Workman. He was a retired forklift operator at Broyhill Industries of Conover and a farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Short Workman.
He is survived by five sons, Loyd Workman, Guy Workman, Billy Workman and David Workman, all of Vale, and Ronnie Workman of Lincolnton; seven daughters, Muriel Hull, Geneva Towery and Janice Houser, all of Vale, Dorothy Bright and Kathy Martin, both of Swansboro, and Joan Chapman and Darnell Carswell, both of Morganton; two sisters, Laura Willis and Ann Wright, both of Vale; a sister-in-law, Ethel Workman of Vale; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Mulls Chapel Baptist Church with the Revs. Thomas Berry and Richard Adams officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

CHERRYVILLE - Ms. Maria Magdalena Rivera, 15, of 233 Delview Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Eric Houseknecht officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery, Cherryville. A rosary will be recited tonight at 7 in the chapel of Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home.
