BENSON - Louise Love Clifton, 91, of 1400 Stephenson Rd., Benson died May 2, 1999.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday in Johnson Memorial Church with Dr. Herbert Carter and Rev. Murry King and Rev. R.B. Parrish Jr. officiating. Burial, Johnson Memorial Church Cemetery.
Survivors: daughters, Maxine Byrd of Benson, Hazel Gibbs of San Antonio, TX, Patsy Byrd of Smithfield, Jackie Parker of Benson; son, Danny Clifton of Benson; sisters, Velma Morgan of Raleigh, Caroline Spence of FL, Rosie Lee Barnes of Jonesboro; brothers, Thurman Love of Butner, Erwin Love of Angier; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Clifton was preceded in death by her husband Percy Albert Clifton, a daughter Meta Belle Byrd and two sons James Garland and Gerald Albert Clifton.
Family will be at the funeral home Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m.

DAVID A. EVANS SR.
GREENVILLE - Mr. David A. Evans, Sr., 92, retired businessman and farmer, died Monday, May 3, 1999 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in First Christian Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Evans was co-owner of Garris-Evans Lumber Co. in Greenville and Wilson for all of his adult life and had served as President and was currently Chairman of the Board. His interest in the growth of Greenville had led to his involvement in the development of the Plaza Shopping Center and many subdivisions. He had served on the City of Greenville Board of Alderman, on the Board of Directors of Home Federal Savings and Loan, and was a former member of the Pitt County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees.
Mr. Evans was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, where he had served as a deacon, elder, treasurer, and as Chairman of the Church Board, and was a longtime Kiwanian.
He is survived by: wife, Myrtis Hughes Evans, formerly of Parkton; son, David A. Evans, Jr. and his wife, Winnie Watson Evans of Greenville; daughter, Anne Evans Brewer and her husband, William C. Brewer, Jr. of Greenville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Evans Trust of First Christian Church, 520 Greenville Blvd., SE, Greenville, NC 27858.

MESCAL SWAIM FERGUSON
RANDLEMAN - Mescal Swaim Ferguson, 81, of 115 Shaw Street, Randleman died Sunday, May 2, 1999 at her residence.
Funeral on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at 3 p.m. in Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, Randleman, conducted by Rev. David Hamlyn, Dr. Donald Maddox and Kevin Almond. Burial, Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro, NC.
Mrs. Ferguson was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Howard Ferguson, and a homemaker. She was active with the Randolph Community College Foundation, Randolph Hospital Foundation Board, Randolph County Public Library and Randleman Public Library, Randolph County Historical Society, North Randolph Historical Society, The Fergusons were instrumental with different scholarships at schools for higher education. She and her husband had given to the School of Pharmacy at Campbell University and UNC-Chapel Hill and the School of Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill. She was a member of the Chancellor's Club at UNC-Chapel Hill and a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church where she was treasurer of the building fund for over 30 years and a teacher of Star Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Ferguson received the Campbell University Presidential Medallion on March 27, 1999 and a Honorary Associate Degree in Humanities from RCC February 25, 1999.
Survivors: nephews, Larry Swaim of Franklinville, Howard Ferguson of Fayetteville; great-nieces, Tonja Fox of Sophia, Anita Cole of Raeford; two great-great-nephews; two great-great-nieces.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 3, 1999 at the Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman.

MINNIE F. FERRELL
MIDDLESEX - Mrs. Minnie Ferrell, age 89, of 7441 Hoyt Rd., died Monday, May 3, 1999, in Rex Convalescent Care Center in Raleigh.
Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. from Stony Hill FWB Church in Middlesex by Reverend Lewis Forsythe. Interment will follow in Bailey City Cemetery.
She is survived by four daughters, Juanita Card of Raleigh, Kay Cone, Alice Perry and Phyllis Strickland all of Middlesex; one son, Bobby R. Ferrell of Middlesex; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Reuben H. Ferrell.
The family will receive friends at Shingleton Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at 7465 Hoyt Rd. in Middlesex.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Stony Hill FWB Church Building Fund.

WESLEY D. HALLETT
RALEIGH - Wesley D. Hallett, 60, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at Rex Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born in Bath, NY on Sept. 25, 1938. He was educated at Savona High School and Corning Community College in upstate NY. He was employed at Tipper Tie, Inc., Apex as a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer. He was an active member of Providence Baptist Church, serving as an usher and taking a major role in building the sets for the church's Christmas and Easter programs.
Mr. Hallett is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Leah Hallett and sister, Geraldine.
He is survived by his wife, Leonore P. Hallett; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Linda Hallett and three grandchildren of Livermore, CA; son, Keith Said, Jr. of New York City; daughter and son-in-law, Karyn and Seth Sochacki and two grandsons of Union Beach, NJ; sister and brother-in-law, Leata and Elmer Holmes of Lumberton; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Raymond Kane of Chambersburg, PA; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Providence Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Baptist Church, Wes Hallett Memorial Fund, 6339 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612-2638.
Arrangements for the Hallett family are being held by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.

JAMES I. "PETE" HATCHER
SELMA - James I. "Pete" Hatcher, 80, died Sunday. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. today, Tuesday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with Rev. Perry Jordan to officiate. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Erdean (Dean) Griswold Hatcher; son and daughter-in-law, Welton R. and Shirley B. Hatcher of Oak Island; brothers, Roland Hatcher of Selma, Leon Hatcher of Pine Level; sister, Ida H. Edwards of Selma; grandchildren, Randy Hatcher and Valerie H. Wallace; great-grandchildren, Hannah Wallace and Grant Wallace.

GUS HEONIS
RALEIGH - Gus Heonis, 85, of 3404 Marietta Court died Monday. He was owner/operator of the former Fairview Food Market on Fairview Road and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Raleigh Lodge 500.
Surviving: his wife, Mary Etta Kirk Heonis; two sons, James G. Heonis and his wife, Charlotte, of Raleigh, Michael Heonis of Raleigh; a sister, Alice Heonis of Raleigh; a sister-in-law, Paula Heonis of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Eddie, Jimmy, Wendy, Michele, and Michael; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholette and Andy.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with Fr. Paul Kaplanis officiating. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park with masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, 828-4311.

SARA HYTOFF
RALEIGH - Sara Hytoff, 76, died Monday at Rex Hospital. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Harry Hytoff; son, Ronald Hytoff and his wife, Julie of Tampa, FL; daughter, Lisa Mayer and husband, Theodore of Raleigh; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son Brian Hytoff.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at their residence, 3208 Eagle Trail, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.

MARIAN W. JOHNSON
ROANOKE RAPIDS, Va. - Funeral service for Marian W. Johnson, who died Thursday, April 29, 1999, will be held 12 noon Tuesday, May 4th at First Baptist Church, 310 N. Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va. The Rev. Kenneth Wright will officiate. Family will be at the church from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Rosaland J. and James E. "Sonny" Lane Sr.; grandson, James E. "Jimmy" Lane Jr., all of 2608 Fox Gate Drive, Raleigh, N.C.
Services are in the care of Hamlar & Curtis Funeral Home, Inc., 1002 Moorman Road, N.W., Roanoke, Va. 24016.

JOSEPH EDWARD KEEL
AHOSKIE - Joseph Edward Keel, 83, of 2908 Ginger Rd., Kinston died Sunday, May 2, 1999.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. at Howard-Carter & Stroud Funeral Home in Kinston, with Rev. Jesse Croom and Rev. Jack Watson officiating.
Survivors include: sons, Lowell Keel of Kinston, Garner Keel of Raleigh; brothers, Roger Phillips Keel of Roxboro; four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Howard-Carter & Stroud Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ahoskie Rescue Squad, 901 West First St., Ahoskie, NC 27901.

SARA TATE MARTY
CHARLOTTE - Sara Tate Martyn, 75, of Charlotte, NC, died Sunday, May 2, 1999 at her home.
Born in Gastonia, NC, June 22, 1923, Sara was the daughter of the late Sarah Morrow Griffith and Rev. Thomas Greenlee Tate. She grew up in Gastonia and graduated from Gastonia High School in 1940. She was also a graduate of Peace College, Raleigh, NC.
Mrs. Martyn retired from First Union Mortgage Corporation in 1988, after 30 years of service as a accounting supervisor.
She is survived by her two sons, Lyman Martyn and his wife, Marjorie, and Thomas Martyn and his wife, Taeko; one sister, Mary Grotheer; and three grandchildren, John Billy and Jamie.
Her family and friends will remember Sara as the kind and loving woman, they all came to know.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Hankins & Whittington-Dilworth Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel.

ANN SPARGO PRICE
GASTONIA - Ann Spargo Price, 65, of 4307 Chelsea Way, died Monday, May 3, 1999 at the home of her daughter, 1531 Orange Hill Court.
A native of Gaston County, she was daughter of the late Grafton William Spargo. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church; Hospice Volunteer, past president and board member of Old North State Golf Association, participated in NC Women's Amateur Golf Association, where she won Super Seniors in 1998, past president of Gaston Country Club Women's Golf Association, winning Club Champion numerous times. She was a graduate of Gastonia High School.
Survivors include: sons and daughter-in-law, Bill Price, Jr. of Raleigh, Steve and Liz Price of Matthews and Craig Price of Winston-Salem; daughter and son-in-law, Lee and David Martin of Gastonia; her mother, Edith Anders Spargo; sister, Sandra S. White of Gastonia; grandchildren, Stephen Price, Jr. and Eric Price both of Matthews, Chandler Price and Madison Price both of Winston-Salem, Evan Martin and Price Martin both of Gastonia.
A funeral service will be conducted by Drs. Joseph C. Seymour and James Westmoreland at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Gaston Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Brad Lee, Dick Perkins, Heard Smith, George Gardner, Ty Horton and Derick Close.@obitt ext:The family will receive friends tonight (Tuesday) from 6-8 p.m. at McLean & Son Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Lee Martin, 1531 Orange Hill Ct.

ESTHER T. SLATER
FUQUAY-VARINA - Esther Virginia Svendsen Tant Slater, 52, a machine operator for 26 years with Lufkin Rule Co., died Sunday. Funeral 2 p.m. today at Sugg Funeral Home Chapel in Fuquay-Varina. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: husband, Paul Slater; daughters, Shirley Tant Davis and husband Travis, Anna Moore all of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jessie Lee Davis, Travis Dustin Davis, and Brandon Joseph Davis; mother, Bertha Chapman McGovern; step-father, Floyd McGovern; brother, Arne Carl Svendsen of Smithfield; sisters, Frieda Avery and husband Donnie, Sandra Upchurch and husband Timmy all of Angier.
The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Shirley and Travis Davis, 1208 Green Branch Lane, Raleigh, 662-3779.
