JOHN LINDSEY SPRY
RALEIGH - John Lindsey Spry, 95, died Saturday, May 1, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital.
He was a retired accountant with General Motors in Baltimore, MD. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Raleigh, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carrie Stutter Spry; sister-in-law, Alice Stutts Young Poole of Raleigh; and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Barton Methodist Church, Raleigh or to your favorite charity.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

JOSEPHINE "JOJO" W. VEASEY
DURHAM - Mrs. Josephine "JoJo" Whitley Veasey, 72, of 305 Wellington Drive, went home to be with The Lord, Sunday night in Durham Regional Hospital.
A native of Mecklenburg County she had lived in Durham for many years. Mrs. Veasey at the time of her retirement in 1983 was a vice-president of Dean, Whitter, Reynolds.
She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and the Durham Civinettes.
Surviving are her husband, Grady Veasey of the home; one daughter, Becky V. Thompson of Durham; one son, David Veasey of Jackson; six grandchildren, Danielle, Jerred, Jeffrey, Melissa, Christopher and David and one great grandson, Devin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Riverside Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Jimmy Jones. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church, 4601 Guess Rd., Durham, NC 27712.
The family will receive visitors at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m.

MABEL J. WOODS
ROXBORO - Mabel James Woods, born May 3, 1906, died Monday May 3, 1999, on her 93rd birthday, in Raleigh, NC. She was the second of eight children born to Arthur A. and Hattie McCauley James in Laurinburg, NC. Her husband, Wallace Woods, died in 1965.
She is survived by her brother, T.J. James of Easley, SC, and by eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters: Frances M. James, of Washington, DC and Elizabeth J. Dotterer, Virginia C. James, Hazel J. O'Brien, Audrey L. James; and one brother, Dr. Arthur A. James, Jr., all of whom were from Sanford.
A 1927 graduate of Meredith College, she earned her bachelors degree in music and moved to Roxboro, NC where she lived most of her life. She met and married Wallace Woods, and together the voluntarily did much early work in music education in Roxboro and Person County. She taught piano lessons from her home and has been remembered as a patient teacher of many, many children.
As a faithful and devoted member of the Roxboro Baptist Church, she served as organist from 54 years. After her retirement in 1991, the church honored her by naming their new Schantz organ as "The Mabel J. Woods Organ". In addition to her music, she taught Sunday School is the primary department for 50 years. She was also honored by the Roxboro Rotary Club in 1994 as recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for her many years of service as pianist, and was charter member of the Meredith College Heritage Society.
Services are being arranged by Brooks and White Funeral Home in Roxboro where visiting hours will be from 7:00-8:30 on Thursday, May 6, 1999. The funeral will be Friday, May 7, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. at the Roxboro Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Roxboro Baptist Church, P.O> Box 348, Roxboro, NC 27573 or Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27607.

JERRY W. BRUCE
DURHAM - Mr. Jerry Wayne Bruce, 56, resident of 6812 Blalock Rd., Bahama, died Tuesday following declining health. Mr. Bruce was born in Harlan, KY, the son of the late Robert and Edith Bruce. He graduated from high school in Harlan, KY and was a graduate of Cumberland College in Cumberland, KY and the Watts Hospital School of Medical Technology in Durham, NC. He worked at Duke Hospital Laboratory for a short time before being drafted into the Army where he served from 1966-1969. He was a Vietnam Veteran and received the Army Commendation for Service. After discharge, he returned to Watts Hospital Laboratory and served as an Assistant Director of the Laboratory for 25 years until retiring on disability. Mr. Bruce was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and was on the Long Range Building Committee. Jerry loved the Lord and showed it in the life he lived.
Mr. Bruce is survived by his wife, Rebecca Tyree Bruce; two sons, Steven Wayne Bruce of Raleigh, and David Walton Bruce and his wife, Mika Stegall Bruce of Monroe; two brothers, Larry Bruce of Harlan, KY and Gary Bruce and his wife, Phyllis of Clinton, TN; a sister-in-law, Frances Wells of Chesapeake, VA; a brother-in-law, Tom Tyree and his wife, Jan of Roanoke, VA; his mother-in-law, Estelle Tyree of Martinsville, VA and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, 11:00 a.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church by Rev. Don Chasteen. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Casket Bearers will be Charles Eubanks, J.T. Carthen, Bernie Berry, Harold Newton, Ed Shoe, and Mitch Williams.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church Building Fund, 1104 Milton Road, Durham, NC 27712. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 at Clements Funeral Home.

EDITH "MAW" BELL
CARY - Edith "Maw" Bell left us Tuesday, June 8, after 68 years of taking care of all those who loved her. She will be missed for her love of life and her sincere desire to put others before her in all that she did. She is preceded in death by her husband, M. Faxon Bell and parents, Sidney and Irene Caldwell. Maw will be greatly missed by all of her friends and her surviving family: daughter, Jackie Crowder and husband, Roy of Cary, NC; son, John M. Bell and wife, Lynn of Montpelier, VA; grandchildren, Heather and Mitch Crowder and Layne and Casey Bell; brother, Jimmy Caldwell and wife, Muriel; and sisters, Hazel King and husband Bill, Norma Wray and husband, Jack, and Ruby Bonham and husband, Earl.
The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Vinton, VA on Thursday, June 10, from 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held Friday, June 11, at 1 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service 3 p.m. at Altavista Memorial Park in Altavista, VA.
Children were a huge part of Maw's life, and they always brightened her day. Thus, in lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Duke Children's Hospital so that Maw can continue to help others even in her passing. Please know that the family welcomes flowers from those who chose to send them; however, at Maw's request, the family ask that you do not send arrangements that include carnations.

COL. KENNETH B. BOYD, USMC (Ret)
RALEIGH - Colonel Kenneth Berlin Boyd, USMC (Ret) died Sunday, June 6, 1999 at Rex Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 84 years old.
Colonel Boyd was born on October 11, 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri to the late George Raymond Boyd and Bertie Olive Berlin. He spent his childhood in Independence, Missouri.
Colonel Boyd enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1939 and quickly rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in Samoa. Colonel Boyd participated in the invasions of Guadalcanal and Tarawa during World War II and participated in the Ichon landing and the retreat from Chosin Reservoir during the Korean Conflict. He retired from active duty at the Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia in 1968. He was awarded three Bronze Star medals for valor and the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.
Colonel Boyd was married for 54 years to Helen Lewis Wolfe Boyd of Washington, NC, currently a resident of Raleigh. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Kenneth R. Boyd of Bel Air, Md. and Robin Boyd Mentha of Raleigh. Colonel Boyd also has three grandchildren who all reside in Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 19, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 300 St. Mary's Street. Dr. John P. Johnson will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to Save the Children or to a favorite charity.

JON ZACHARY CAMPBELL
DURHAM - Jon Zachary Campbell, age 29, died June 8, 1999 after a courageous battle with cancer. He attended schools in Orange and Chatham counties, graduating in 1988 from Northwood High School
Ever the true UNC Tarheel fan, Zack's knowledge of UNC sports, including the personalities as well as the statistics, made him the consummate Carolina sports expert. Everyone who knew Zack respected his knowledge and his faith in "his Tarheels." He also had excellent recall for details of current events, political issues, television, and movies - those topics which made him the person you'd go to for answers to details beyond your own recollection.
A gentle, caring person, Zack made friends wherever he went. With his obvious interest in and concern for people, he befriended even strangers, turning them into fast friends. He had the special ability of being able to connect with everyone on a personal level, discussing the people and things that were most important to them individually.
Zack is survived by his mother, Peggy Campbell of Cary; his godmother, Sandy Daughtry of Durham; other family members, and friends too countless to name.
There will be a memorial and life celebration service held Monday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Triangle Hospice at the Meadowlands, 1001 Corporate Drive, Hillsborough, NC. His mother requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to his memory to Triangle Hospice, 1804 MLK Parkway, Suite 112, Durham, NC 27707.

CALVIN M. DEMPSEY
WILSON - Calvin M. Dempsey, 80, died Wednesday.
He was the superintendent of Mayo Mills in Tarboro until his retirement in 1981.
Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday, Edgecombe Memorial Gardens.
Survivors: daughter, Debby Dempsey Thompson of Wilson; son, Marshall Dempsey; grandchildren, Vanessa June Thompson of Wilson, Paula Cooper Rendleman of Greensboro, Thomas Cooper III of Goldsboro; special friend, Laverne Whitley of Smithfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Champion Dempsey.
Visitation from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 US 264 West; other times the family will be at 2004 Hermitage Road.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 6028, Greenville, NC 27835. Designate Leo Jenkins Cancer Center or Heart Center.

FRED PAUL FEUDALE
DURHAM - Fred Paul Feudale, 44, of 2070 Royce Dr., Mebane died Wednesday morning at Duke Medical Center.
A Durham native, he was the son of Janet E. Hairr Feudale Nesbitt and the late Fred Peter Feudale. After graduating from N.C. State University he was owner and operator of Oak Grove Landscaping for over 20 years. For the last six years he has worked as Landscape Supervisor at Elon College. Fred was an active member and Deacon at Durham Memorial Baptist Church where he also served on the Building and Grounds and Long Range Planning Committees for many years. He will be deeply missed by his family, church family, co-workers and many, many friends.
Surviving are his wife, Page Hardison Feudale; one son, Lucas Feudale; three daughters, Emily, Jessie and Molly Feudale, all of the home; mother, Janet Nesbitt and her husband Robert Nesbitt of Durham; three sisters, Susan Bell and her husband Doug of Durham, Theresa Stakeman and her husband Bruce of Faith, NC, and Karen May and her husband John of Durham; maternal grandmother, Zeola Dodson of Durham; paternal grandmother, Columbia Feudale of Union, NJ; ten nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Durham Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gerald C. Goodwin and the Rev. Ed Denton officiating. The Rev. Mario Moreno will serve as Spanish translator. Burial of cremains will be private.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made to Elon College General Scholarship Fund, 2600 Campus Box, Elon College, NC, 27244 or to Durham Memorial Baptist Church Brotherhood Mission, 2703 Holloway Street, Durham, NC 27703.

DR. CHARLES HIGHSMITH
TROY - Dr. Charles Highsmith of Troy, NC, long-time surgeon at Montgomery Memorial Hospital and community leader, died Wednesday, June 9, at Bowman Gray/Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was 82.
Dr. Highsmith was involved in a broad range of public and civic endeavors in Troy and Montgomery County. He served 16 years (four terms) as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, the last two as chairman.
Dr. Highsmith came to Troy in 1951, and for about 25 years was the only surgeon in Montgomery County. He retired March 27, 1986.
He was honored on June 19, 1994 when "Dr. Highsmith Day" was held in Troy and citizens from throughout the county gathered to pay tribute to the community leader.
Dr. Highsmith was instrumental in founding the Montgomery Country Club in 1953 and served on its board of directors until his death. He was responsible for clubhouse improvements through the years.
He was a member of the Montgomery Historical Society and led to the establishment of the Troy Roller Mill as an Historical site. He also was instrumental in the acquisition and renovation of The Montgomery House.
Dr. Highsmith was a member of the board of The Montgomery County Fund, and established endowments for a nursing scholarship at Montgomery Community College, and for support of the Roller Mill museum.
He led efforts to convince state officials for the need and eventual construction of N.C. 134 from Troy to Ulah in Randolph County. Similar efforts resulted in improvements to N.C. 24-27 from Roberdo to Lake Tillery.
Dr. Highsmith was a member of the founding board of trustees of Sandhills Community College. He also was a strong supporter of Montgomery Community College. He was active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Troy. He was chairman of the building committee of the Montgomery County Public Library.
A native of Dunn, he graduated from Wake Forest College in 1938, and from George Washington School of Medicine in 1942. He finished the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1947.
During World War II, Dr. Highsmith was a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and was assigned Chief of Surgery at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. After the war, he continued surgical training at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Highsmith is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Geneva Ellen Highsmith Silver of Rye, N.Y.; sons, Charles David Highsmith and John Adams Highsmith, both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; brother, Dr. George P. Highsmith of Thomasville; sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Dunbar of High Point; stepdaughters, Leslie O. Gibbs of Thomasville, and D.D. Beuerkle of Cape Giardeau, MO; stepson, Mike Ott of Columbia, SC; and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Troy with Rev. Charles Cook and Rev. Bill Sabiston officiating. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery in Troy.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy.

KATHERINE CARLTON JOHNSTON
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Katherine Carlton Johnston, 78, of 6100 West Friendly Avenue died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Johnston's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 1999 in Centenary United Methodist Church, with Dr. Randy Waugh and Dr. James E. Hull officiating. Interment will be private.
Katherine Singleton Johnston was born in Henderson, NC on February 28, 1921 to the late Carroll and Rebecca Watkins Singleton. Mrs. Johnston was a graduate of Brevard College. She was the business administrator for Centenary United Methodist Church and a member of the Board of Directors of the Shepherd Center. Mrs. Johnston was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church where she served as Secretary of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Commission on Education and as a youth counselor. She was a Life Member of the United Methodist Women, past Regent of the Colonel Arthur Forbis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, past chairman of the David Caldwell Log College Association. For 27 years, she was a member of the Wesley Long Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Johnston's first husband, A.P. "Red" Carlton preceded her in death in 1994. She is survived by her husband, Norman D. Johnston of the home; three children, A.P. Carlton, Jr. of Raleigh, Dr. Katherine Carlton McAdams of Silver Spring, Maryland, Elizabeth Carlton Fiebach of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Singleton Gibb of Richmond, Virginia; and six grandchildren, Mary Beth and Troy Carlton, Robin and Julia McAdams, Michael and Emma Fiebach.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 1999 at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street.
Memorial contributions may be made to West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.

MARY (UVER) JUDD
HOLLY SPRINGS - Mary (Uver) Judd, 90, died Monday at Harnett Manor Nursing Home in Lillington. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Bazzel Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, Sweet Springs Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Helen Judd, Verta Judd and Hiltie McClain, all of Holly Springs, Geraldine James and Jennifer Judd, both of Fuquay-Varina; sons, H. Clinton Judd of Apex, James Russell Judd of Martinsburg, W.VA, Jerry Judd of Baltimore, Md.; sister, Alma McNeil of Holly Springs; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation at the church Friday from 1-2 p.m..
In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Sweet Springs Methodist Church, Holly Springs.
Services under the direction of Trice Funeral Home, Fuquay-Varina.
