Laverty, Thomas

Thomas Shaun Laverty, age 57, died on Tuesday, February 22, 2005, in his home.

Tom was born on July 24, 1947, in the Bronx, New York. He moved to the area in the spring of 2001 after reading an article in Time magazine about Fargo.

Tom served in the United States Marine Corps from January 1968 to 1971 when he received an honorable discharge. He was in combat in Vietnam from July 1968 through November 1969. Tom was a Purple Heart recipient and earned the Combat Action Ribbon. He was a member of the VVA for fourteen years. He belonged to the Queens Chapter 32 in New York then transferred to North Dakota Chapter 374 three years ago. Tom was the Chairman of Operation Holidays for the past three years. Operation Holidays is a non-profit Veterans organization dedicated to helping all veterans and their families. Over the years, Operation Holidays has shipped canned goods, board games, writing materials and books to over 1200 troops that were stationed in combat zones overseas.

Tom was very active in fundraising. He raised thousands of dollars for Operation Holidays and Mikie’s Place, a playground dedicated to the memory of Mikie Jones-Schreder, located at the School for the Blind in Grand Forks. He was also very active with the Amvets and veterans affairs.

Tom was a very kind, generous man, who always did things for others and never expected anything in return. But often joked that if you had 6 winning power ball numbers, he’d take them. Tom will be deeply missed by all of his friends.

In memory of Tom, memorials may be sent to: Operation Holidays, PO Box 10446, Fargo, ND 58106.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, in Boulger Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Scott, Leigh Allen (peewee)

Leigh Allen (PeeWee) Scott, age 78, 1528 34th Street South, Fargo, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital.

He was born December 21, 1926, in Langdon, ND, to Louise Anderson Scott and George Mueller Scott. He lived in Medina, ND, and Harwood, ND, where he first attended school. When the family moved to Fargo, he attended Jefferson Elementary, Agassiz Junior High and Fargo Central High School, graduating in 1944. He was co-manager of the basketball team, along with Mark Andrews, the year that Fargo Central won the state title.

After serving in the Navy, he attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND, for one year. He worked for Smith Inc. from 1948-1950. On August 4, 1951, he married Frances Sweeney in Detroit Lakes, MN. They lived most of their married life in Fargo with a short time in Iowa City, IA, when Leigh was with Great Lakes Pipeline. He worked at Great Lakes Pipeline, now called William Bros. Pipeline from 1950-1961. He then went to work at the U.S. Post Office in Fargo from 1961 to October 1986, when he retired.

Leigh umpired Fast Pitch Softball from 1951-1961. He loved sports, especially softball.

Leigh was a member of the American Legion, 40 and 8 in Fargo, and the Elks Lodge in Mesa, AZ, where he and his wife spent 17 winters.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; two children, Steven (Susan) Scott and Shannon Charpentier; five grandchildren, Sam (Stephanie), Jessica, Coleman, and Jacob Scott, and Matthew Charpentier; and two great grandchildren, Hunter and Maxwell Scott, all of Fargo.

Heuer, Carl

Carl Heuer, age 75, died Friday, February 25, 2004 in Manor Care, Fargo, ND.

Carl Clifford Heuer was born on April 11th, 1929 at St. John=s Hospital in Fargo. He was the son of Adolph and Esther Hans Heuer. Adolph Paul Heuer was born Jan. 5th 1900. Esther Mable Hans was born November 3rd, 1904. He died in 1951 and Esther August 2nd, 2002.

Carl was baptized on the grandfather Carl Heuer=s farm near Leonard. After his father=s death he was confirmed and married and was a lifetime member of the Canaan Moravian Church near Davenport, ND. He attended High School at Davenport and graduated in 1947. He attended one year at NDSU and after his father=s death took over the farming interest of the family farm. On February 14th, 1954 he married Wilma Miller of Durbin, ND where they made their home in Davenport. Two children were born to them - Paul of Fargo and Lori Ann who died of a heart condition on March 18th, 1961 (Eight months of age).

Carl was a faithful member of his church and served as a trustee, Elder, and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Davenport Fire Department and held the job of Fire Chief from 1959 to 1960. Also he held a job on the Town Board at Davenport. He was a good friend and liked to help out his neighbors who were in need of equipment or help with farming. He loved the land and enjoyed watching the seeds grow as well as enjoyed the harvest of the grain.

From 1979 to 1986 they spent winter months in their home at Mesa, Arizona. In 1986 he underwent open heart and got along well until 1991 when he had his first stroke plus diabetes. In 1999 a second stroke took place taking a toll on his health some more. He was at home a year until he became a patient at Manor Care home in Fargo. He resided there five years.

He retired from farming in 1994 and the family moved to Fargo in 1998. Carl enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a wonderful father and husband.

He was preceded in death by his father Adolph, his mother Esther, and his daughter Lori Ann, and sister-in-law Delores Buchholz.

Carl is survived by his wife Wilma, his son Paul, and his sister Ruby Forbes and six nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Carl Heuer will be Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Canaan Moravian Church, rural Davenport, ND at 2pm.

The prayer service will be at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, ND Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at 7pm. Visitation will be from 4-7pm Tuesday.

Burial will be at the Canaan Moravian cemetery.

Nordenstrom, Miyo

Miyo Nordenstrom, age 75, Fargo, passed away Monday, February 28, 2005, in Innovis Health, Fargo.

Miyo Nakamura was born November 3, 1929, in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, the daughter of Magoei and Tama Nakamura. She grew up in Japan. She was united in marriage to Ed Nordenstrom in 1968, and they came to the Fargo area in 1971. They lived in Davenport, ND, and then Kindred, ND. They moved to Fargo in 1981.

She is survived by one daughter, Kazumi Hirotani (Norio) of Findlay, OH; two granddaughters; one grandson; three brothers, Eiichi Nakamura, Kaoru Nakamura, and Kazuo Nakamura; and three sisters, Masako Nakamura, Michi Oshiro, and Harumi Nishihira.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Visitation will be Thursday from 6-7 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home, and also Friday from 12-2:30 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home. Burial will be in Davenport cemetery, Davenport, ND.

Blackwell, James

James Lewis Blackwell, age 77, Dilworth, MN, passed away Monday, February 28, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

James was born November 17, 1927, in Cashton, WI, the son of Lester and Myrtle (Olson) Blackwell. He grew up in Wisconsin. Eventually, the family moved to Chicago, IL. He later moved to Gary, IN, where he began truck driving. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan. He returned to trucking following the war. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Mohardt on December 23, 1944, in Gary, IN. They lived in many locations before settling in Dilworth in 1961. He has worked for Jamesville Auto Transport for 31 years, retiring in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Dilworth; two sons, Richard Blackwell of Billingham, WA, and Jamie Blackwell of Fargo, ND; two daughters, S. Dawn (James) Olgeirson of Dilworth, and Melissa (Jeffrey) Evans of Lakeside, CA; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Engh, D. Michael

D. Michael Engh, age 70, Fargo, passed away Monday, February 21, 2005, in Fargo.

Don Engh was born April 28, 1934, in Fargo, ND, the son of C. R. and Helen (Frater) Engh. He grew up in this area and attended school here, graduating from Fargo Central High School in 1952. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. He then began working for Cook Sign Company. He was united in marriage to Eileen Hahn in Fargo on August 2, 1969. They made their home in Fargo. He later became a partner in Heglund Sign Company, and continued working there until his retirement.

He is survived by his children, Todd Engh of San Diego, CA, Julie (Stuart) Landburg of Fargo, and Ann Bronson (Tim Rehberg) of Rochester, NY; six grandchildren, David Bronson, Michael Bronson, Amanda Bronson, Christopher Landburg, Andrew Landburg, and Matthew Landburg; one sister, Ruth Westrick of Fargo; and one brother, Tom Engh of Fargo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, his parents, and one brother, Dick Engh.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Holy Cross North cemetery, Fargo.

Heinle, Carol

Carol Jane Heinle, age 47, rural Hawley, MN, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo.

Carol Jane Johnson was born April 12, 1957, in Albuquerque, NM, the daughter of Palace and Betty (Dietrich) Johnson. Carol’s father served in the United States Air Force, so the family had the opportunity to live in many locations. They lived in Albuquerque for two years, then moved to Oklahoma for one year. Following that, the family resided in Rapid City, SD, for five years, and then moved to France for just over one year. They also lived in Delaware for four years, and then moved to Custer, SD, in 1971. From 1977-1995, Carol lived in Gillette, WY. She was united in marriage to David Heinle on August 11, 1995, in Sturgis, SD. They moved to rural Hawley in 1995. For the past three years, she has worked for Integrity Windows & Doors in Fargo.

She is survived by her husband, David of Hawley; her daughter, Diane Gilmore of Gillette, WY; two stepsons, Todd Heinle of Warba, MN, and Mark (Robin) Heinle of Warba, MN; one stepdaughter, Bryanna (Kevin) Koetz of Grand Rapids, MN; five grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her parents, Palace and Betty Johnson of Custer, SD; three sisters, Pat (Jim) Morgan of Rapid City, SD, Kathy (Dave) Burnette of Rapid City, and Bobbie (Mike) Alexander of Pringle, SD; and one brother, Clyde (Brenda) Johnson of Rapid City.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Thoreson, Lileas
02/28/2005

Lileas P. Thoreson, age 85, Hillsboro, ND, died Monday, February 28, 2005, in the Hillsboro Community Nursing Home.

Lileas Kjos was born the daughter of Edwin and Nina (Boyson) Kjos on May 2, 1919. She graduated from Mayville High School in 1937. She also attended Mayville State Teachers College. She later worked for Honeywell Corporation in Minneapolis, MN.

On April 3, 1943, she married Orville Thoreson in Minneapolis. They lived in Waco, TX, where her husband was stationed at Camp Hood, TX. Later she returned to Mayville, ND, until her husband returned from the service. In 1946, Lileas and Orville moved to Hillsboro. In 1986, her husband retired from the automobile and farm implement business.

Lileas was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, where she was involved in many church activities. She was also active with the Order of the Eastern Star.

Lileas was a very kind, generous, and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to spend time with her two grandsons.

She is survived by her husband, Orville of Hillsboro; one son, Guy (Pat) of Moorhead, MN; and two grandsons, Erik (Jessica) of Minneapolis, and Matthew of Glendale, CA.

Visitation: Wednesday, March 2, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. in Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, and Thursday one hour prior to services in the church.

Funeral Service: Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 2 p.m. in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Hillsboro.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.
