His father was one of the first Missouri Synod Lutheran pastors in eastern North Dakota. Following the death of his father, the family moved to a homestead 9 1/2 miles southwest of Beulah. His mother later married Wilhelm Rettke. Because they were poor, Dick spent much of his time herding cattle in his bare feet. He always carried a pliers in his pocket to remove the stickers from the soles of his feet. By fall, they were as thick as leather. Dick received his rural schooling near Beulah. At the age of 19, he attended a tractor and auto school in Fargo for 14 weeks. After school, he worked in various garages and on road crews building the MKM trail. In 1929, he began working at the Dakota Colleries strip mine where he was first a gasoline locomotive operator and later a mechanic on the large coal trucks. He met his future wife, Alma Knuth, who worked in the cook house at the mine. They were married on April 9, 1932 at Stanton. In 1950, they moved to Zap where they have continued to live. After Dick retired in 1965, he worked on lawn mowers, "puttered" in his garage and enjoyed life. He was a quiet, gentle man who enjoyed sunsets, watching a thunderstorm and all of nature. Dick was a very devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He was an active participant in his church, the Zap School, the UMWA, and the community of Zap. He is survived by his wife, Alma; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Duane Bittner, North Highlands, Calif.; two granddaughters, Paula and Paul Kennedy, Elk Grove, Calif., and Julie and Leonard Sanchez, Antelope, Calif.; five great-grandsons, Ryan, Nolan, Dillon and Collin Kennedy and Isaac Sanchez; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Sanchez.
