John P. Thomalla
Services were held from the St. Joseph Catholic church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, in charge of Father Turek.

Interment was in the Farnam cemetery. John Paul Thomalla was born February 12, 1865, and departed this life Dec. l0, 1937 at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 3 days.

He came to America from Prussia with his parents in 1874 and they settled near Cambridge, Nebr. He moved to this community about 1885.

In 1801 he married Cyrena Hurshman and to this union two children were born: Loren and William. His wife preceded him in death in 1890 and his son, Loren, in 1920.

He moved to Cambridge in 1904, and lived there three years, when he again returned to Farnam.

In 1911 he married Ada Harry and to this union three children were born: Pansy, Earl and Gracie.

They made their home at Farnam until 1922, when they moved to Cozad, where Mr. Thomalla engaged in the implement business.

They returned to Farnam in the fall of 1927 and located on the Laucomer place, south .of town.

A short time later his health began to fail and he suffered continually until he passed away at his home in Farnam.

He leaves to mourn, his wife; two sons, William of Curtis and Earl of Farnam; two daughters, Mrs. Pansy Peirsol and Gracie of Farnam; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Beiber and Mrs. Jane Campbell of Cambridge; one brother, Joe, of Aurora; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.

Martha M. Teel

Martha Teel, 88, of Cozad died March 28, 1998
at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.

She was born May 1, 1909, at Bay City, Texas
to James and Minnie Dowden Harwood. As a child,
she lived in Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

In 1927, she moved to Nebraska and attended
the Grand Island Business College.

On Feb. 12, 1928, she married Carroll Teel.
The couple lived on a farm near Farnam before
moving to Elwood in 1942. Mr. Teel died in 1968.
She moved to Cozad in 1979.

Mrs. Teel was a member of the First United
Methodist Church at Elwood and attended Parkview
United Methodist Church while living in Cozad.

She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne (Dennis)
McCain of Gothenburg; three sons, Delazon of
Kearney, Marion (Jean) of Overland Park, Kan. and
Marlyn (Joan) of Lexington; 16 grandchildren,
26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters,
Lelia Christensen, Violet Stofflet and Virgie Owens
and two brothers, Lawrence and Luther.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the
First United Methodist Church in Elwood with
Pastor Onamae Waddel officiating. Burial will be
in the Elwood cemetery.

Elgie Thomas Thompson
Elgie Thomas Thompson, son of John Edward and Rosetta Thompson was born May 29, 1913 at Ontario, Oregon. He moved to California with his parents when he was 10 years old, and graduated from Burlingame, California, High Schoo1. He attended San Mateo Junior College.

In 1932 he came to Nebraska and started farming with his father in the Farnam vicinity.

On January 12, 1934 he was united in marriage to Nina Hughes. To this union was born four daughters, Betty, Sally, Ruth Ann and Patricia.

Elgie farmed in the Farnam community till 1957, when they moved to Farnam and was employed at the Farnam Co-Op Station. In 1963 he became manager of the Co-Op Station, which he was yet at the time of his death.

Elgie passed away July 8th, 1970, at St. Mary's Hospital in North Platte, after a short illness at the age of 57 years, 1 month and 9 days.

He was an active member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, Lions Club and Volunteer Firemen and a member of the United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed fishing and boating in his leisure time at his cabin at Jeffrey Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Nina; his daughters, Mrs. Gene (Betty) Hoppe, Mrs. Irvin (Ruth Ann) Hess, both of Farnam, Mrs. Sally Thomas of North Platte and Mrs. Ron (Pat) Binning of Milford, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, cousins and friends.

Services were held in the Farnam United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 11, 1970. Rev. Kenneth Coursey officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Audrey Kotschwar and Mrs. Deloras Nickerson with Mrs. Doris Smith accompanist. Pallbearers were Vern Brouillette, Russ Wilcox, Lloyd Beery, Jess Zysset, Dick Edson and Wray Lydic. Burial was in the Farnam cemetery.

Nina E. (Hughes) (Thompson) Martin
Nina E. Martin, 86, of Gothenburg, formerly of Farnam, died Jan. 7, 1999 at Hilltop Estates. Nina was born Jan. 12, 1912 at Barracksville, West Virginia as the ninth child of WIlliam and Sarah Soxman Hughes.

Her family had long been employed in the coal mines and were beginning to see the deadly results of constant exposure to the coal dust and accidents due to neglect of precautionary timbering. As a result of this, Nina and her family chose to leave the coal fields in 1921 and moved across country in two touring cars to California. The family's first work experience there was in the fruit and nut operations of northern California near Red Bluff. Again the work was seasonal and limited. The family moved to Burlingame, Calif., in 1925, where Nina attended and graduated from high school in 1930.

She continued to do housework for others as she had done through high school, and adding other employment to help with the family's day to day expenses. During this time she attended San Mateo Jr. College for a year where she was interested in art and bettering her life status through education.

In 1933, Nina traveled to Nebraska with her future mother-in-law. She was married to Elgie Thompson Jan. 12, 1934 at Oberlin, Kansas. They farmed north of Farnam until 1938 when they traveled west via Brownsville, Texas, to Red Bluff, California, looking for work.

They returned to Nebraska, moving south of Farnam to farm the Kerr place. For eight years they farmed north of town until 1957 when they moved into Farnam.

Nina began working outside the home, employed at Clement's Mercantile, the Broken Spoke, and Hoppe's Country Store.

Following the death of her husband Elgie in 1970, she continued working until 1979, when she married Jack Martin. In 1987, Jack and she moved to North Star Apartments in Gothenburg where she still resided at the time of her death.

Jack preceded her in death in 1988.

Her latest joy besides her family and friends was her work at the Gothenburg Senior Center, where she was employed as a Green Thumb member.

Nina was a longtime member of the Farnam United Methodist Church, Farnam American Legion Auxialiary, Easter Rebekah Lodge, North Union Aid and several bowling leagues.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Hoppe-Stevens and her husband Ken Stevens of Farnam, Sally Thomas of North Platte, Ruth Ann (Irvin) Hess of Farnam and Pat (Ron) Binning of Batavia, Ohio; four step-children, June Cooper of North Platte, Jerry (Sandra) Martin of Fairbury, Doug (Sue) Martin of North Platte and Norma Florom of McCook; two brothers, Don (Margaret) Hughes of Petaluma, Calif., and Joseph (Elvira) Hughes of San Jose, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; 11 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, four brothers, husbands, a son-in-law and two grandsons.

Funeral services were Jan. 11, 1999 at Farnam United Methodist Church with Rev. Eugene Beye officiating.

Burial was in the Farnam cemetery.

Owen Thompson
Owen Thompson was born to J. W. and Ida Owen Thompson, November 17, 1890, at Farnam, Nebraska. He passed away quite suddenly on June 15, 1961, at the age of 70 years.

Owen grew to manhood in the Farnam community. He enlisted in World War I and joined the Rainbow division, serving overseas.

In 1924, he was united in marriage to Floy Caley at Denver, Colo. This union was blessed with one son, Gerald.

He was appointed Postmaster in 1919 serving until 1931 when he was appointed mail carrier on the rural route where he served until 1959 when he retired. From then on, he found more time in his favorite sports, hunting and fishing.

Owen was a member of American Legion Post 288; of the I.O.O.F. no. 235, serving as sec'y for 25 years and of the Farnam Lions Club of which he was past President and now Secretary.

His dear ones who remain are: his wife, Floy; his son, Gerald; and his sisters, Maude Thompson and Mrs. Mable Hicks, both of San Gabriel, Calif.

Mildred Tillinghast
Mildred Dorothy Tillinghast, 91, formerly of Arthur, died Dec. 22, 1998, in Tulsa Okla.

She was born Sept. 12, 1907, in Farnam to U.T. and Nettie Wade. She graduated from Weeping Water High School. She taught school in Cherry, Garden and Arthur Counties before she married Wayne Tillinghast on May 17, 1930. They lived in Arthur County. her husband preceded her in death in 1989. She sold the ranch in 1991 and moved to Oklahoma.

Survivors include three sons, Lyle (Doris) of Collinsville, Okla., Bernard of Grand Island, and Jerry (Linda) of Holts Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. MST Saturday at the Arthur cemetery with Rev. Glendon Epp officiating.

Myrtle Hesse
Myrtle Rice Hesse, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clebert Rice, was born March 26, 1882, at Olmstead, Ohio, and departed this life February 21, 1968, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Mrs. Rice came to Nebraska with her parents in 1890 to live on a "tree claim" near Farnam. She was married to Carl J. Velte on January l, 1902. To this union were born six children: Florence Spearman of Lincoln, Harold C. Velte, (deceased); Gladys Gaibler of Eustis; Helen Farmer of Terril, Iowa; Anna Prestegard of Granite Falls, Minnesota; and Gaylord Velte of Grant. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren.

Carl J. Velte died on December 18, 1925. She was married to Chris H. Hesse on September 12, 1928. Chris Hesse died on February 4, 1958.

Mrs. Hesse was a member of the Farnam Methodist Church for the last forty years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Rebecca Lodge, the W.S.C.S. the North Union Aid and the Community Workers.

Funeral services were held at the Farnam Methodist Church, Saturday, February 24, 1968, with Clergyman Rev. James Staley officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Anton Kotschwar, Mrs. Deloras Nickerson and Mrs. Raymond Smith. Pallbearers were Noble Bellamy, Charles Davis, Henry Wiggers, Russell Wilcox, Raymond Smith and Dale Montgomery.

H. Wayne Thomsen
H. Wayne Thomsen, 78, of Gothenburg died Feb. 21, 1999, at his home in Gothenburg following a long struggle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 10, 1921, near Ingham to Herman S. and Mabel Grace Christensen Thomsen. He attended Ingham School, Wesleyan College and the University of Nebraska Agricultural College in Lincoln. He was a member of the Gamma Phi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity.

Mr. Thomsen was a farmer and rancher. He lived on the family farm until retiring and moving into Gothenburg in 1983.

On Jan. 20, 1973, he married Loree Kolb Agent.

An avid sports fan, he played on the Farnam town baseball team in the 1940s and was considered an outstanding player. For years, he was the spotter for the Farnam High School football team. He attended the University of Nebraska home football games until this last year. He was a faithful follower of the local area football and basketball teams.

He was instrumental in starting the Farnam Rural Fire District and was on the board for 24 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and a Lions Club Member for more than 40 years. He was a member of Farnam/Eustis Marriage Encounter and also a member of the *Journey of Hope* cancer support group.

After retirement, he enjoyed part-time employment with Bellamy Fertilizer and DeKalb and hauling corn for area farmers. He also worked in collecting the 1990 census.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carol (Deloit) Cross of Moorefield and Shelly (Mark) Bierma of Omaha; a son, Earl J. Agent of Topeka, Kan.; a brother, Vernon (Ethel) Thomsen of Sutherland; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Wesley, John and Henry Cross; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Evelyn Dow, and a niece and nephew.

Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Hospice, United Methodist Church pipe organ fund or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Fowler officiating. Burial will be in the Gothenburg cemetery.
