William Alexander Wallingford
William Alexander Wallingford, son of Hiram and Hannah Wallingford, was born September 17, 1847 at Montkarmal, Kentucky. He passed away August 15, 1934 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Daisy Depuy in Gothenburg, Nebraska at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was united in marriage on May 21, 1872 to Nancy Caster at Greenburg, Indiana. To this union seven children were born.

In 1887 the Wallingford family came to Nebraska locating on a farm four and one half miles northwest of Farnam, where they lived until 1918. At that time they moved to Gothenburg where he has resided ever since.

Mrs. Wallingford passed away May 15, 1931. Since her death Mr. Wallingford has made his home with his children.

He was baptized and became a member of the Baptist church when a boy later transfering his membership to the Methodist church at Gothenburg where he remained a faithful member to the time of his death.

Mr. Wallingford was a kind and loving father, and a good neighbor, always thinking of the welfare of others.

He leaves to mourn his death four daughters, Mrs. J. Mindenhall of South Bend, Indiana, Mrs. Ben Lapp of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Daisy Depuy and Mrs. Pearl Johnson of Gothenburg. Two sons Charley of Denver, Colorado and Rafe of Gothenburg, one son having passed away in infancy. Mr. Wallingford is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. He had five sisters and one brother all of whom preceded him in death.

A brief service was held at the home of the daughter in Gothenburg on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock after which the funeral service was held from the Methodist church in Farnam as 3 o’clock. Rev. C. R. Tanner officiating.

Dora M. Sass
Dora M. Sass, 76, of Ogallala, died Feb. 22, 1999, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

She was born May 17, 1922, at Farnam to Emil and Judith Isaacson Johnson. She married Henry Sass on Sept. 3, 1960. The couple resided on the farm northwest of Ogallala until 1980, when they retired from farming and moved into Ogallala to make their home.

Mrs. Sass was a member of the VFW. Auxiliary and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy (Gary) Cross and Vickie Malone, both of Ogallala; two sons, Kendall Banta of Denver and Tom (Rhonda) Banta of Lincoln; four sisters, Rhoda (Don) Seay of Ault, Colo., Aliene (Harlan) Stewart of LaCanada, Calif., Adelay (Harry) Bassler of Tehachapi, Calif. and her twin, Dorothy Vlasin of Imperial; three brothers, Ardell (Jean) Johnson of Ogallala, Donald (Karen) Johnson of Chadron and Forrest (Jewel) Johnson of Farnam; 10 grandchildren, Amy (Steve) Schilz of Brule, Kelli Cross of North Platte, Kristin Cross of Lincoln, Jeremy, Troy, Megan and Jamie Malone of Ogallala, Faustina (Rob) Steinman of Lincoln, Vanessa and Fields Banta of Lincoln; three great grandchildren, Ethan Ryan Schilz of Brule, Aaron and Avery Steinman of Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; a son, Gerald; two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Ogallala United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Norris officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala cemetery.

Genevieve Shelton
Genevieve Fitch Shelton was born Sept. 23, 1899, at Farnam, Nebr. to William and Charlotte Fitch. She passed away at Long Beach, Calif., on May 30, 1966. She was a graduate of Farnam High School. She retired 2 years ago after teaching for 40 years.

At the time of her death she was a member of the Leisure World Community Church at Seal Beach, Calif. She always took an active part in the work of the church wherever she lived. Much of her life was spent in service to others. Her strong Christian faith unheld her through the many months of suffering.

She was preceded in death by parents. She is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Glenrose McCormick of Loveland, Colo.; Mrs. Doris Smith of Farnam; and Mrs. Lucille Hyde of Gothenburg. Four brothers; Ronald Fitch, Pomona, Calif; Eugene Fitch, Arvada, Colo; Dr. William Fitch, Downey, Calif; and Robert Fitch of Riverside, Calif and fourteen nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Farnam Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. June 4, 1966. Rev. Quincy Murphee officiated. Music was by Bruce Miller, accompanied by Mrs. Blaine Miller. Pallbearers were Glen Wintermute, Harold Bick, John Wightman, Kromborg Kjar, Horace Fitch and Michael Fitch.

Allie Stebbins
Allie Martin Stebbins, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Martin was born in Morgan County, Illinois, on June 23, 1872.

She came with her parents to Richardson County Nebraska at the age of 4 months. The family moved to the Farnam community when she was 20 years old where she lived until recently moving to North Platte.

Mrs. Stebbins had been a member of the Farnam Methodist Church for about 70 years.

She was united in marriage to Milton D. Stebbins August 23, 1892. To this union was born 3 sons and two daughters. She leaves to mourn her loss, Cora, of Potter, Nebr., Bill of San Jose, Calif., Opal of North Platte. A daughter-in-law, Maud Stebbins of Holdrege, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Also nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Earl and Dwight.

Funeral services were held in the Farnam Methodist Church Tuesday, April 28, 1964, with Rev. Quincy Murphree officiating.

Ollie P. (Uhlig) Stewart
Mr. and Mrs. Harry F. Stewart, who were injured on Tuesday of last week when their car left the road and struck a driveway bridge at the Moore farm home north of the canal on highway 47, both died without regaining consciousness the following evening at a Gothenburg hospital, where they had been taken by ambulance following the accident.

A double funeral service, with the Hugo-McVay Funeral Home in charge, and conducted by Rev. C. R. Tanner of Elwood, was held at the local school auditorium Sunday afternoon with 700 mourners and friends in attendance.

Music for the service was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hess and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pollard as singers and Mrs. Harry Saum, pianist.

Interment in Farnam cemetery.

Harry F. Stewart, son of Alonzo A. and Laura Stewart, was born December 23, 1887, at Humboldt, Nebraska. He was the oldest son of a family of six. In 1892 he moved with his parents to Hunt, southwest of Eustis.

His pallbearers were Walter Donner, Dan McNickle, Jim Hoppes, Elmer Howat, John Oberg and Jay Rice.

Ollie P. Uhlig, daughter of Chas. And Ellen Uhlig, was born April 25, 1892, on a farm southwest of Eustis. She was one of a family of ten. Her childhood and school days were spent in this community.

Her pallbearers were Amie Guerin, Ernest Lewis, Clyde Gardner, Jake Ernest, Edgar Gewecke and Burr Parker.

They were married at Hunt March 1, 1911, and lived on a farm there until 1914, when they moved to the farm southwest of Farnam, in Frontier county, that was their home until their untimely death.

There were nine children born to this union, two preceding their parents in death. Children left to mourn are three sons, Harlan of Los Angeles, Calif., Frank and Rex at home; four daughters, Mrs. Eugene Johnson of Elsie, Mrs. Derrel Easterday of Smithfield, Mrs. Virgil Bennett of Gothenburg and Neva at home, also ten grandchildren. He leaves two sisters and two brothers, two half brothers and a half sister. She is survived by four brothers and one sister.

The departed husband and wife were devoted parents, good neighbors, active in community affairs and willing to sacrifice for the family and others.

John Sturgeon
John Sturgeon, a life long resident of the Orafino community died Friday following a farm tractor accident on a country road near Cambridge April 23, 1965.

John Harold Sturgeon was born December 24, 1913, to Henry A. and Nora Presler Sturgeon at Orafino, Nebraska. He grew to manhood in the Orafino community and attended Orafino schools graduating in 1932.

In 1942 he entered the Armed Forces and served in the Pacific theater. John was engaged in farming where he resided until his death April 23, 1965, at the age of 51 years, 2 months and 29 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survivied by his brothers and sisters: Edna Byrum, Denver Colo., Marry Messen, Scottsbluff, Howard Sturgeon, Denver, Colo., Delmar Sturgeon, Bellflower, Calif., Henry Sturgeon, Farnam, George Sturgeon, Arapahoe, Melvin Sturgeon, Funk and Helen Andrews, Veterans, Wyoming; 8 nieces and 9 nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Farnam Monday, April 26, at l:00 p.m. with Rev. Quincy Murphree officiating.

Singers were Mrs. Audrey Kotschwar, Mrs. Ardyce Bick, Irvin Hess and Charlie Pollard, accompanied by Mrs. Doris Smith. Pallbearers were; Eugene Peterson, Cecil Morton, William Hopkins, Lloyd Hopkins, Frank Sheffield and Clyde Kotschwar. Interment was in the Farnam cemetery.

Roy Wear
Funeral services for Roy Wear, 84, of Aurora, former resident of Farnam, were held Friday November 1, 1965, at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora with the Rev. Lyod Bliss of Hastings officiating.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Farnam cemetery with the Rev. John Milkkelsen of Gothenburg officiating.

He was born June 8, 1881, in Tobias, coming to Farnam at the age of 18.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, five sons; Elvin of Big Springs; Harold of Iowa; and Kenneth, Raymond and LaVern all of California; 4 daughters, Mrs. Bernice Brown, Brady; Mrs. Elta Yant, Lincoln; Mrs. Betty Norgaard of Aurora and Mrs. Imo Jean Lamm of Arkansas; two brothers, William and Lewis of Kansas and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hazen of Idahao, and 28 grandchildren.

William Elwood Wharton
Willam Elwood Wharton son of Thomas and Sarah Wharton, was born September 24, 1861 at Appleby, Westmoreland county, England, and passed away November 2, 1945, at his home in Farnam, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 9 days.

He was the eldest of seven children. His parents and four brothers and a sister preceded him in death. His brother Mark and sister Mrs. Annie Hope still reside in England.

In 1886, he came to America and settled at Jerseyville, Ill. Two years later he moved to Moorefield, Nebraska, and made his home there until 1909. At that time he moved to his farm south of Farnam where he has lived for the past 37 years. Last spring he and Mrs. Wharton moved to their home in Farnam. Mr. Wharton made two trips back to England since coming to America, thus crossing the ocean five times.

He attended the Episcopal church while living in England. In 1910 he was baptized and joined the Church of God at Moorefield. After moving to Farnam he was a faithful attendant at the Methodist church serving on the official church board and teaching the mens Sunday school class for many years. His presence and the many inspirational talks he gave to the church at various times were a great help to all. The pastors of the church always found a warm welcome and fellowship in the Wharton home.

He enjoyed execllent health until the last few months. He was keen minded and cheerful until he quietly slipped away Friday evening with Mrs. Wharton sitting beside him.

Mr. Wharton took an interest in all worthwhile community activities for many years. He was an earnest bible student and his life was a true example of devout Christian living. He will be greatly missed as he and Mrs. Wharton were always among the first to call on each new neighbor and in any home where there was illness.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Hannah, his son Harold of Gering, his daughter Helen of Lincoln, daughter Mrs. Florence Greenlee of Waterloo, Iowa, and dauther Lt. Martha Wharton, an army nurse who has just returned from 30 months overseas duty, two step-daughters, Mrs. Naoma Farris of Chicago and Mrs. Bessie Vig of Sharon, N. Dak., also 4 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Chester Hugo funeral parlors in Gothenburg to the local Methodist church, with Rev. McCaig, Rev. Rodewald and Rev. Geisler officiating. Interment was in Farnam cemetery.

Dency Blanche Wagers Whitman
Dency Blanche Wagers, daughter of William and Luella Wagers, was born on July 26, 1891, at Shickley, Nebraska; and passed away at the Community Hospital in Cozad, Thursday, December 1, 1955; at the age of 64 years, 4 months, and 6 days.

She was united in marriage to Leroy H. Whitman, September 15, 1909, at Mason City, Nebraska. To this union were born two daughters.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Whitman lived in Mason City for two years. They then resided in Primrose for about thirty years. For the past fifteen years they have lived in Farnam. Since their marriage they have operated the Primrose Press and the Farnam Press.

Mrs. Whitman was baptized in the Methodist Church in her infancy and has been a member of the Methodist Church all her adult life. She was a member in good standing of the Farnam Methodist Church at the time of her death. She was a member of the Easter Star, Rose Chapter No. 102 of Albion and of the Rebekah Lodge, No. 175, Farnam.

She is survived by her husband, two daugthers, Irene, Mrs. Donald H. Bopp of Spaulding, and Helen, Mrs. William B. Macek of Ravenna, two granddaughters, Eleanor, Mrs. Garrett Kasselder of Spaulding, and Miss Nancy Kay Macek of Ravenna, one grandson, A. M. 2c Ronald M. Bopp, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida. Two sisters, Mrs. Henry J. Williams, Omaha, and Mrs. Velma Latin, Los Angeles, California, three brothers, Bert Wagers of Indio, California, W. E. Wagers of Casper, Wyoming, and W. M. Wagers of Redding, California.

Mrs. Whitman was a good neighbor, a fine Christian, and a person loved by all who knew her. She leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Funeral services were on Sunday, December 4, 1955, in the Farnam, Methodist Church, Rev. B. H. Hart officiated. Interment in the Farnam cemetery, Farnam, Nebraska. Olesen Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Hugo Blomquist and Robert Zeeh sang beautiful appropriate songs during the service and were accompanied by Mrs. Earl Edson at the piano. Rebekah Ladies assisted at the graveside service.

Pallbearers were John Rowland, Hugo Blomquist, Burr Parker, Dale Montgomery, Ernie Lewis and Jack Martin.
