Robert E 'Bob' Runcie

Robert E. ‘Bob’ Runcie, 79, of 3025 Wendell Dr., died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at his home.

Burial with Military Rites will be Thursday, October 16, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska. Memorial service will be Thursday, October 16, 2003; 11:30 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Miller, Rev. Gerald L. Schwab and Michael Runcie officiating.

Bob Runcie was born icon December 14,1923 in Hastings, Nebraska to Hiram E. & Pearle L. (Rutan) Runcie. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1941 and attended Ray Vogue School of Design in Chicago, Illinois and Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the United States Army during WWII from February 4, 1943 to January 23,1946 and in the Korean War from October 14, 1950 to October 31,1951. He married Dolores ‘Dee’ Kistler, on September 5, 1948 in Hastings, Nebraska. He worked for Brach-Thompson, Weyerhauser Company and was manager and kitchen designer at Dutton-Lainson Showcase, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Christian Builders Class, church choir, Sunday School teacher, Walk to Emmaus and a past member of the church building committee and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a member of Chorus of the Plains, several quartets and volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile. He was a life long Hastings resident.

Bob Runcie was preceded in death by his father, Hiram and brother, Don Sr.

Kathleen S. Arnold, 79, of 2713 Edgewood Lane, died Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at her home.

Memorial graveside service & burial will be Monday, October 6, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Paul Dunbar officiating.

Kathleen S. Arnold was born icon November 7, 1923 in Hastings, Nebraska to Charles & Emilie (Koepke) Sherman. On June 21, 1944, she married Calvert I. Arnold in Washington, Kansas and he preceded her in death on August 2, 1989. She worked for Hested’s store, and was an operator, instructor and supervisor at Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph and later as a clerk for Gibsons. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a life long Hastings resident.

Kathleen S. Arnold was preceded in death by her parents and husband Calvert.

Survivors include,

Virginia Ruth Freeman

Virginia Ruth Freeman, 90, of Hastings, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion at Good Samaritan Village.

Memorial services will be held Friday, November 28, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at the Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene with Rev. David L. Speicher officiating. Interment will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Virginia was born icon February 19, 1913 in Grant, Nebraska to Roscoe H. & Beulah (Simmons) Vance. She graduated from Reynolds High School, Reynolds, Nebraska in 1931, attended Peru College, Peru, Nebraska, followed by two years as a teacher southeast of Reynolds, Nebraska, and was a 1937 graduate of the Mary Lanning School of Nursing. On July 25, 1937, she married Vernon R. Freeman and he preceded her in death on March 15, 1993. They resided in Alexandria, Nebraska where they operated a food store which was re-located to Reynolds in 1942. In the fall of 1943, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska where they resided for the remainder of their lives, except for a two-year period in Milford, Nebraska. Virginia‘s career as a registered nurse included St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska and twenty-three years at the Hastings Regional Center, where she worked as assistant head nurse, clinical instructor and unit supervisor. She was a member of Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene and a past member of Mary Lanning Nursing Alumni Association.

Virginia R. Freeman was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernon, 3 infant sons and one brother.

Roy H. Kennedy, Jr.

Roy H. Kennedy, Jr., 65, of 173 Main Street, Trumbull, Nebraska, died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Monday, November 24, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Roy H. Kennedy, Jr. was born icon June 23, 1938 in Hastings, Nebraska to Roy H., Sr. and Opal P. (Kingrey) Kennedy. On March 3, 1956, he married Mary E. Robinson in Juniata, Nebraska. In the late 1970's, he was a race car driver and was the points champion at Mid-Continent Raceway in Doniphan. He also raced at the Hastings Raceway. He owned and operated Central Nebraska Disposal from 1971 until 1982. He then worked for Woodward’s Disposal Service, Inc. and was a life-long resident of the Hastings area.

Roy H. Kennedy, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Gregory Kennedy, 3 sisters and 1 brother.

Mike T. Elliott was born icon May 30, 1939 in Hastings, Nebraska to Hugh 'Buzz' & June (Gettmann) Elliott. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1957 and attended Milford Trade School, Milford, Nebraska for 2 years. He returned to Hastings and worked in the auto industry, owning Mike's Auto Body & Used Car. He married Joyce Christensen on December 11, 1965 in Hastings, Nebraska. After closing his business, he worked for Garvey's Elevator till retiring in 2001. He was a member of Four Rivers Sportsman Club and a life long Hastings resident.

Mike T. Elliott was preceded in death by his parents, Buzz & June Elliott.

Hastings resident, Frank J. Stutesman, 82, died Monday, November 17, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion.

Rosary will be Tuesday, November 18, 2003; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, November 19, 2003; 10:30 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Frank J. Stutesman was born icon June 27, 1921 in Long Island, Kansas to Edwin & Blanche (Price) Stutesman. He graduated from Guide Rock High School, Guide Rock, Nebraska and married Marcelene ‘Marcy’ Champoux on June 19, 1942 in Red Cloud, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army during WWII from August 13, 1942 to October 10, 1945 and was awarded a purple heart. He moved to Hastings, Nebraska in the 1940's and was an electrician for Guarantee Electric, ABC Electric, owned Stutesman Electric and worked for and retired from Farmland Industries in 1985. He was a Master Electrician. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles and a lifetime member of V.F.W.

Frank J. Stutesman was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery, rural Juniata, Nebraska.

Ronald C. Uden was born icon February 23, 1939 in Hastings, Nebraska to Glen & Mary V. (Bayles) Uden. He was raised in the Hastings and Juniata area and graduated from Juniata High School in 1957. He attended college and began working for Hastings Utilities electrical department, retiring after 20 years of service due to illness. He married Lynda K. Van Boening on March 20, 1980. He lived in Texas, Republican City and Holdrege, Nebraska. He was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Ronald C. Uden was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carol Wallin.

C. James Eckblade

C. James Eckblade, 80, of 801 N. Juniata, Ave., Juniata, Nebraska, died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at his home.

Memorial service will be Friday, November 14, 2003; 11:00 A.M. at First Congregational, United Church of Christ with Rev. Barry Rempp officiating. No viewing, Mr. Eckblade was cremated. Interment at a later date in Stromsburg, Nebraska.

C. James Eckblade was born icon July 14, 1923 in Schuyler, Nebraska to Charles & Anna (Brodine) Eckblade and the grandson of John & Johanna Eckblade and Olaf & Brita Brodine, all formerly of Stromsburg, Nebraska. He graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1941 and served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946. He spent most of his WWII years in the south Pacific as a radio operator on B19 and B25 bombers. Following the war, he attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He and Eda Ree Hass were married in Riverside, California in 1953. They moved to Hastings where he spent 38 years, retiring as manager of the Nebraska Public Power District Dispatch Office. Jim was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Registered Professional Engineer. While at the University, he studied violin with Emanuel Wishnow and later played in the Hastings Symphony for 36 years. Music and woodworking were his passions. He made three violins, rebuilt a cello for his daughter, and built many beautiful pieces of furniture. He and EdaRee were active members of the First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Hastings and sang in the choir for many years. Jim was co-chairman of the Building committee, guiding the completion of the present structure. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the church and was a member of the Outdoor Ministries Committee of Nebraska Conference, UCC. He is survived by his wife, Eda Ree, four daughters and sons-in-law, Becky & Dan Higgins and Anita & Mark Schaepe of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Miriam Eckblade and Emily & Jeff Weak of Omaha, Nebraska, ten grandchildren and one sister, Annette Rogers of McMinnville, Oregon. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
