Robert Berlin
Robert Berlin, 79, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday, December 19, 2003 at his home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2003 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy White officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 10:15 AM at the church.
Bob Berlin was born
October 8, 1924 in Genoa, Nebraska to Reynold "RJ" & Mary (Parry) Berlin. He attended school in Genoa until the age of 12 when the family moved to Riverside, California. There he attended Riverside High School where he was a part of the ROTC program. The family moved back to Genoa when Bob was 16 and he graduated from Genoa High School in 1942. On May 13, 1943, Bob entered the US Army during WWII, serving in Europe and was honorably discharged on February 17, 1946. He then attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for 1.5 years. Bob then went to work for the State of Nebraska Highway Department.
On September 14, 1950 he and Bernetta Bokelman were united in marriage in Genoa. On September 23, 1950, Bob was called back into active duty in the service and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Bob was discharged on August 4, 1951. In 1955 Bob and Ken Schaffer went into partnership and opened B-K Floor Crafters in Columbus. Bob sold his portion in 1970. Engineering was always an interest to Bob, so he went to work for Bruce Gilmore & Associates, retiring from there in 1987. He then went to work for the Nebraska Concrete Council as a Public Relations Director until 1992. Bob then joined Johnson, Erickson & O'Brien Engineering from Wahoo, Nebraska in the marketing department until 1998.
Bob was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council and was an usher for many years. He enjoyed traveling and taking the family on their annual fishing trip to Minnesota. Bob also enjoyed hunting, golf, card clubs, and reading. He was a member of the Eagles, the American Legion, and a life member of the VFW.

Leah Amelia Beneke, 88, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.
Services will held on Saturday, December 20, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Adams officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
Leah Amelia Beneke was born
May 2, 1915 in Columbus, Nebraska to Reinhold and Claudora (Denman) Karlin. She attended Columbus Public Schools and graduated from Kramer High School. Leah married Charles Beneke on September 17, 1950 in Ogallala, Nebraska. She worked for Northwestern Bell and General Telephone Company as a telephone operator, she retired in 1973. She was a member of the American Legion, VFW, DAV and Eagles Auxiliaries. She was past deputy commander of the DAV, and held other offices at the local and state levels. She served in various offices in the VFW Auxiliary. Leah was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Dorothea Ballew, 93 of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 12, 2003, 10:00 A.M. at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Columbus, Nebraska with Father Joe Miksch officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph-St. Patrick Cemetery, rural Platte Center, Nebraska. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday from 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. at the church.
Dorothea L. Ballew was born
March 10, 1910 in Platte Center, NE to John & Clara (Mark) Schroeder. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Platte Center. She moved to California and on July 28, 1941 she married James Ballew in Santa Monica, CA. In 1949 they moved to Platte Center and then to Columbus in 1953. She worked at Becton Dickinson for 12 years in Columbus. Dorothea was an excellent cook and was a member of the Quilters Club at St. Isidore Catholic Church.

George W. Kern, 76, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at the Federated Church in Columbus with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Interment will be at 10:15 A.M. at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post # 84 Honor Guard. There will be a visitation from 10:30 - 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at the church.
George W. Kern was born
April 19, 1926 in Kansas City, KS to George and Frances (Wolf) Kern. He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus, Nebraska in 1944. George enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 19, 1944 and entered active duty on May 31, 1944. He served in the South Pacific during WWII and was honorably discharged on July 24, 1946. He attended Doane College and was employed by Reed, Veach, Wurdeman and Associates as an engineering technician until his retirement in 1988. George was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3704 and the American Legion Post #84.

Roger J. Larsen, 72, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at Columbus Community Hospital.
Services are Wednesday, September 20, 2000; 10:30 A.M. at Grace Episcopal Church in Columbus, Nebraska with Rt. Rev. James D. Warner officiating. Burial will be in Columbus Cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Hartman Post 84. Visitation is on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. and on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 from 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home.
Roger J. Larsen was born
December 12, 1927 in Grinnell, Iowa to Lewis and Elida (Thorsen) Larsen. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1945 to 1948 and from 1950 to 1951. Roger graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy in 1955, he moved to Columbus after graduation. He married Sandra K. McCleery on May 17, 1958 in Columbus, Nebraska. He was co-owner of Fleischer Drug and currently working as a registered pharmacist at Tooley Drug. Roger was a member of the American Legion for 53 years, a member of Grace Episcopal Church and a former member of the Elks. Memorials be may be directed to Grace Episcopal Church or to the family.

Vernon D. Hellbusch was born
May 21, 1935 in Columbus, Nebraska to Arthur C. and Elsa (Osten) Hellbusch. He attended St. John's Lutheran Grade School, Creston and Seward High Schools. Vernon attended Concordia Teachers College, Seward, Nebraska from 1953 - 1957, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois from 1961 - 1965 and Concordia College, St. Paul, Minnesota from 1985 - 1986. Vernon lived in New Jersey, California, Colorado and Missouri, before moving to Columbus in 1997 due to illness. Throughout his career, he worked as a Director of Christian Outreach, as a Parish Administrator, Director of Christian Education, Assistant Principal, Day Care Administrator and as a teacher. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Willis R. Loseke, 85, of Platte Center, Nebraska, died Thursday, April 19, 2001 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus, Nebraska.
Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, on Monday, April 23, 2001 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Sunday, April 22, 2001 from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, April 23, 2001 from 9:00 AM until service time. A family prayer service will be held on Monday at 9:45 AM at the church.
Willis R. Loseke was born
August 8, 1915 in Platte County, Nebraska, Postville Township to William F. and Caroline (Korte) Loseke. Willis grew up on a farm North of Monroe and attended Postville District #31 school. On September 20, 1945 Willis married Mila V. Schoen at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, NE. They farmed in the Platte Center and Monroe area all their lives. Willis was a member of the Farmers Co-Op Board in Platte Center for 18 years. He was on the District #31 School Board and helped in getting the Lakeview School District organized, he also helped form the Loup Canal Water Usage Association.

Avis L. Koch, 81 of Creston, Nebraska died Sunday, August 5, 2001 at Countryside Home in Madison, NE.
Services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leigh, NE on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Scott Anderson officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Creston. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Leigh, NE on Wednesday, August 8, 2001 from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM.
Avis L. Koch was born
January 10, 1920 in Rural Leigh, Nebraska to Anton J. and Clara M. (Barrett) Pimpara. She graduated from Leigh High School and attended Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska where she received her teaching certificate. Avis married Harvey D. Koch on June 9, 1938 in Creston, Nebraska.
She was member of the Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, and a member of the Ladies Guild. After the Presbyterian church closed, she became a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ladies Aid of the ELCA and given an honorary membership. She was a member of the Creston American Legion Auxiliary Pieper Unit 306 and held offices of president, vice-president and was the historian for many years.
Avis taught school at District 45 in Platte County and was the Creston correspondent for the Humphrey Democrat for many years. Avis' hobbies included gardening, composing poetry, and writing history. Her composition of the History of Creston, NE, was selected for placement in the National Archives in Washington D.C.
