Vera E. (Wiles) Brannan

Vera E. (Wiles) Brannan, 92, of Central City died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City, Nebraska. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Central City with the Reverend Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 on Friday at Wagner Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church.

Vera was born icon on July 5, 1908 at Schuyler, Nebraska to Eli L. and Emma (Brummer) Wiles. She grew up in the Clarks area and graduated from Clarks High School in 1926. She attended Nebraska Central College from 1926 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1930.

She was united in marriage to Francis Brannan on February 22, 1936 in Central City. The couple lived and farmed Northeast of Central City from 1936 to 1978 when they moved into Central City. Mr. Brannan died on October 22, 1991. Vera taught in rural Merrick County Schools for 11 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and confirmed in 1923. She was a 4H Leader, Farm Bureau Member, Wesleyan Sunday School Class Member, Lucky Ladies Extension Club, United Methodist Women and a Bible School and Sunday School teacher. Vera enjoyed traveling, crafts, crocheting, sewing, gardening, and playing games and cards. She also loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna (Oren) Skiles of Arkansas City, KS; Mary (Charles) Eckery of Red Feathers Lakes, CO; and Elaine Brannan of Houston, TX; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Lindgreen of Clarks, NE; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Monte McCullough Hord

Monte McCullough Hord, 46, of Pelham, NY, died tragically on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. Memorial services will be on Saturday, September 29, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. at Christ Episcopal Church in Central City with the Reverend Del Funk officiating.

The family wishes contributions be made to The Hord Children=s Educational Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wagnerfuneral.com. Wagner Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Monte was born icon August 24, 1955 in Grand Island to Thomas F. and Gloria M. Hord. One of six children growing up in Central City, and working on the Hord family's ranch and feedlot operations. He graduated from Central City High School in 1973. He belonged to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and is a 1978 graduate of the University of Nebraska

On June 7, 1990, he married Lisa Sharp. They have 3 children: Molly 7, and the twins, Sophie and Jackson 6. They live in Pelham, NY

Monte worked as V.P. of Institutional Equities for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th Floor of the World Trade Center. He was a Hospice volunteer, soccer coach, and very involved in his community. He was an inspiration to many people and always had a friendly smile and a twinkle in his eye as he greeted you. He was very devoted to his family.

Survivors include his wife Lisa and their three children: two brothers- Dan (Chris) Hord of Wilmette, IL and Stacy Hord of Biloxi, MS; two sisters- Sara Beck of Lincoln and Debra Taylor of Colorado Springs, CO.

Reuel G. Andersen
Reuel G. Andersen, 82, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Andersen was born icon Dec. 17, 1925, at Harlan, Iowa, to John and Ida (Pedersen) Andersen.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Carolyn; a son, Dale Andersen of Spokane, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Stanley Jones of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Floyd and Dorothy Andersen and Dewey Andersen, all of Omaha.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Dayne Andersen, Todd Andersen Jones, Trent Neil Jones and Graham Michael Jones; and nieces and nephews.

Reuel was raised on a farm near Harlan, Iowa, where he graduated from Harlan High School with honors in 1943. He attended Commercial Business College and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He served in the United States Navy during WWII.

He married Carolyn Campbell on Oct. 12, 1963. They lived in Omaha, Humboldt, Tenn., and Council Bluffs, before moving to Grand Island in 1976. Reuel worked for Delicious Foods in Grand Island from December 1976 until he retired in December 1992 as Vice President of Production.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. Reuel enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking, caning, NASCAR (both watching and attending) and helping people. He was a sports enthusiast.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Marjorie M Batie
Marjorie M. Batie, 87, of Grand Island died Monday, March 24, 2008, at BryanLGH East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Batie was born icon April 4, 1920, at York to John and Fernlea Wilson.

Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Lyle Batie, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Batie of Lincoln and David and Janice Batie of Greenville, N.C.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Courtney and Brandon.

Her parents and a sister, Helen Powel, preceded her in death.

Marjorie was raised in Grand Island, receiving her education at Howard, Walnut and graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1938. She was united in marriage to Lyle Batie on June 12, 1949, at Grand Island. She worked as a public accountant for Roeser Accounting that later became Adkisson Accounting. She later was self employed.

She is a 75-year member of Trinity United Methodist, where she taught Sunday school, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Platt-Duetsche ladies. She loved to embroider and cross stitch.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.

Francis P. 'Frank' Berney
Francis P. 'Frank' Berney, 77, of Grand Island died Monday, June 2, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Richard Piontkowski will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Berney was born icon March 29, 1931, at Greeley to William and Agnes (McKinzie) Berney.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Charlienne; two daughters and a son-in-law, Teri and Jeff Garey and Bobbi Owen, all of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Christie Berney of Hastings; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Rita Horst, Judy and Gib Johnson and Dorothy Dennhardt, all of Grand Island; and a brother and sister-in-law, William and Pat Berney of Hastings.

Other survivors include three grandchildren, Asia and her husband, Brian Boslau, Josh Berney and fianc?e, Audrey, and Cody Berney.

Frank grew up on a farm near Greeley, receiving his education at Greeley. He entered the United States Army during the Korean War on Feb. 29, 1952, and was honorably discharged on Feb. 17, 1954.

Frank was united in marriage to Charlienne Joseph on Jan. 4, 1957, in Grand Island, where the couple made their home. Frank worked at Nash Finch for 20 years before retiring in 1993.

He was a member of Platt-Duetsche. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family.

Mr. Berney was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Raymond Berney; and three sisters, Mary Ellen Miller, Agnes Roehatch and Betty Jean Lieser.

Memorials are suggested to The American Heart Association.

Karen J. Borgmann
Karen J. Borgmann, 57, of Grand Island died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at home following a courageous seven-month battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Harvey Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Because of the July 4th holiday, visitation will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Borgmann was born icon Aug. 11, 1950, at Ord to Louis and Helen (Klapal) Pesek.

Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Art; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Lynn Reimers of Boelus; and a brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Peg Pesek of Grand Island.

Other survivors are a cousin, Sharon Whiteman of Colorado Springs and numerous other cousins.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Karen received her education at Comstock, Ord High School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1968.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Borgmann on May 15, 1971, at Grand Island. They made their home in Grand Island, where she worked for Wheelers/Country General for over 20 years until its closing and then went to work for the Hall County Attorneys office.

Karen enjoyed crocheting, camping, the outdoors, cooking and making kolache's. She is a member of Messiah Lutheran and the ZCBJ Lodge 112 at Ord.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Donald T. Brooks Sr.
Donald T. Brooks Sr., 75, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Burial of ashes will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Brooks' wish was to be cremated.

Mr. Brooks was born icon on Jan. 5, 1933, at Clarks to James and Mildred (Peck) Brooks.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, who died March 18, 1985, and a daughter, Gayle Kanter.

Survivors of the immediate family include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Jr. and Carolyn Brooks of Grand Island; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Rick Watson of Moapa, Nev., and Karen and Jon Hallsted of Grand Island; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Delores Brooks and Ernest and Patricia Brooks, all of Grand Island.

Other survivors include 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Donald grew up in Merrick County. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Holder on Oct. 14, 1950, after which the couple resided in Grand Island. Donald was employed by Grand Island Fire Department, Mid Plains Construction, Woolco and Grand Island City Parks from which he retired.

Mr. Brooks was a member of Platt-Duetsche. He was an exceptional baseball and softball player, having pitched fast pitch at the Platt-Duetsche. A wonderful provider, Don would have done anything for his family. He will be missed and remembered by many, as he was always there for others.
