'Joe' Siegel
LITCHFIELD -- Joseph "Joe" Siegel, 82, of Litchfield died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Hazard. The Rev. Loren Pohlmeier will officiate. Burial will be in the Litchfield Cemetery.
A Christian wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church.
Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Siegel was born
on Nov. 18, 1917, at Dannebrog to Joseph and Clara (Conner) Siegel. He was educated in Howard and Sherman County schools and worked for a construction company for four years.
He married Lucille Vanwinkle on Aug. 30, 1942, at Durham, N.C.
He served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II. He served in the 78th Lightning Infantry Division, 1st Army, which fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received an American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and a Victory Medal. He was discharged in 1946.
The couple then moved to a farm south of Litchfield, where Mr. Siegel farmed for the rest of his life.
Mr. Siegel served for 11 years on the Scott Township Board and for 20 years as a Sherman County supervisor. He was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Hazard.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Arnold and David Siegel, both of Litchfield; two daughters, Joan Zimmer of Mason City and Linda Eberle of Kenesaw; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Elsie Semon of Short Hills, N.J.; and two brothers, Edward Siegel of Litchfield and Raymond Siegel of Kennewick, Wash.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Art.
Robert Parminter
PALMYRA -- Robert E. Parminter, 45, of Palmyra, formerly of Stromsburg, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, in rural Otoe County.
Services are pending with Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Marvin Kucera
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico -- Marvin D. Kucera, 59, of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, died April 17, 2000, at Ciudad Obregon, Mexico.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Curtis Holzworth will officiate.
Mr. Kucera was born
on July 27, 1940, in Merrick County to Frank and Eunice (Bussart) Kucera. He attended school in Chapman and graduated from Chapman High School in 1959. He owned and operated a hotel in Cabo San Lucas.
Survivors include four daughters, Kim Smith, Kathy Snyder, Joni Ramsey and Kris Ingle, all of Grand Island; an adopted son, John Kucera of Cabo San Lucas; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Kucera of Palmer and Jim Kucera of Central City; and a sister, Bonnie (Mrs. John) Klingenberg of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ella Casteel
Ella Jane Casteel, 81, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Central Nebraska Humane Society.
Mrs. Casteel was born
on July 27, 1918, at Wood River to Zilmer and Edith (Harper) Burmood. She grew up in the Wood River area and was educated in country schools.
She married Arnold Beekman on Aug. 31, 1935, at Kearney. Mr. Beekman died in 1968.
She married Kenneth Casteel on Oct. 1, 1955, at St. Paul. She worked at Leon Plastics for 20 years until retiring in 1980. After retiring, she worked in concessions at Fonner Park.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the church circle, the Eagles and the Platt-Duetsche Ladies. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Doniphan and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Delene White of Dale, Ind.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters: Beth Hurley of Grand Island and Roberta Meola of Costa Mesa, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Gaylene Phillips; and one brother Sheridan Burmood.
Lola Espersen
Lola P. Espersen, 71, of the Nebraska Veteran's Home, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the Nebraska Veteran's Home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Burger will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be at from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Espersen was born
July 18, 1928, to Pearl and Effie (Abbott) Cogill at Hyannis. She received her early education at District 2 School at Whitman.
She received her high school education at Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis. She went on to graduate from beauty school in Grand Island. She worked at beauty shops in and around the Grand Island area.
She married Arnold Jess in 1949 at Boelus. They farmed in the Boelus area. Mr. Jess died in 1963. In 1975 she married Christian Espersen and they lived in Doniphan. Mr. Espersen died in 1994. Later she lived at the Nebraska Veterans Home.
She was a member of the Methodist faith, a lifetime member of the American Legion auxiliary at Doniphan, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and crafts.
Ruth Martin
Ruth M. Martin, 87, of Grand Island died Monday, April 17, 2000 at her home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. C. Roger Nelson officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martin was born
Feb. 25, 1913 to Russell Schull and Elvira Bertha (Balfanz) McIntire in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings High School, attended Hastings College and taught at a small country school for two years.
She married William Albert Martin on July 22, 1934, in Hastings. The couple lived in Grand Island.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Women's Association, the Esther Circle, the Management and Finance Committee, the Shrine Auxiliary, a volunteer Girl Scout leader and Boy Scout Den Mother.
She enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing bridge and Nebraska football.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Martin of Branson, Mo.; one daughter, Judith Berkson of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. Russell J. McIntire of Sun Lakes, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Walter Russell McIntire.
'Larry' Sullivan
William "Larry" Sullivan, 73, of Giltner, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center.
There will be a special holy week funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan.
Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Friday at the Kleine Funeral Home. Further visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. rosary in the Jubilee Center, in the north part of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Keith Kovanda
BURWELL -- Judge Keith J. Kovanda, 73, of Burwell died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Burwell. The Rev. Jane Ellefson will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Kovanda was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the Ord Hospice, Calamus Golf Course or Ord Golf Course.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kovanda was born
on July 11, 1926, in Milligan to Jess and Dorothy (Pettit) Kovanda. He graduated from Ord High School in 1944. He served in the armed forces from 1944 to 1946 during World War II in the Aleutian Islands.
He married Shirley Anderson on June 20, 1948, in Ord. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1952 and was a deputy Phelps County attorney. He moved to Burwell in 1953. Mr. Kovanda was Garfield County attorney for 26 years.
He married Pamela Nelson on Oct. 22, 1966, in Burwell. He was appointed county judge in 1979 and served for 13 years.
He served on the hospital board for 15 years. He helped create the Burwell Airport Authority while mayor of Burwell. He was a member of the airport authority for 20 years and was a pilot. He helped create the Burwell Rural Fire District in 1955.
He was an avid golfer, enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a certified swimming instructor.
He sang with choral groups and men's quartets and was a soloist for weddings and funerals. He sang the national anthem at Nebraska's Big Rodeo from 1953 to 1983. He traveled to Nashville twice, singing with the Jordannaires, who backed up Elvis Presley and the Judds.
He was a charter member of Elks Lodge 2371 in Ord, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of American Legion Post 298.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Jeffrey of Atlanta, David of Meriden, Conn., Kim of Lincoln and Tom of Grand Island; one daughter, Sara Kovanda of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and one sister, Betsy (Mrs. Don) Warner of Green Valley, Ariz.
Virginia Moderow
CENTRAL CITY -- Virginia Moderow, 74, of Central City, formerly of Marquette, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at IHS Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora. The Rev. Herbert Schutte will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Moderow was born
in Omaha on Nov. 29, 1925. She was adopted at age 8 by Theodore and Emma (Thiemann) Vinkenberg and moved to Carleton, where she graduated from Carleton High School.
She married Melbourne "Ben" Moderow on Feb. 11, 1945, at Freidensau Lutheran Church. They operated a grocery store in Marquette for 20 years. She ran a beauty shop for 13 years in Marquette.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bob of Hastings and Ron of Omaha; two daughters, Pat (Mrs. Ron) King of Grand Island and Sue Polzkill of York; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Kelso of Friend.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie; a son, John; and a brother, John.
