Nellie Fisher

Nellie "Leone" Fisher, 94, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at the St. Francis Memorial Health Center.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Jetmore Cemetery at Jetmore, Kan.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mrs. Fisher was born icon Jan. 4, 1905, to William and Nettie (Durand) Sweeten south of Naponee in Franklin County. At the age of six she moved with the family to eastern Oklahoma by wagon. In April 1925, the family moved to Hodgeman County, Kan., again by wagon.

She married Kermit I. Fisher on Sept. 27, 1925, at Jetmore, Kan.

In 1944 the family moved to Bloomington. In 1963, she moved to Grand Island. She lived the past 18 years with her daughter, Gertrude and her husband Eugene Davis.

She was a cook and seamstress.

She was a member of the Jetmore Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed cooking, her garden and crocheting.

Survivors include one daughter, Gertrude Davis of Grand Island; four sons, Forest and William "Joe" of Fruita, Colo., and Karl and Leo of Baggs, Wyo.; 26 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Frank Sweeten; a son, Marion; a daughter, Opal Mohr; three infant children, Floyd, Edith and Michael; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one great-great-grandson.

Floyd Goodwin

Floyd H. Goodwin, 82, of Cairo, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. James Schmitt will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goodwin was born icon April 2, 1917, in Blaine County, near Halsey to James M. and Idella (Rayno) Goodwin. At the age of eight he moved to Grand Island where he completed his education. During the 1930s he moved to Harrington, S.D. for four years and then returned to Grand Island.

In 1942 he and his brother, Lloyd bought a farm five miles east of Cairo where he has since lived.

Mr. Goodwin was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Grand Island.

Survivors include two brothers, Lloyd and Albert, both of Cairo and a sister, Christie Holtz of Central City.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Henry and Arthur and four sisters, Angela, Dorothy, Lola and Florence.

Claude Hunt

GIBBON -- Claude F. Hunt, 90, of Gibbon died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith United Church in Gibbon. The Rev. Barbara Spangler will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon.

Visitation will be one hour before service time Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Gibbon Good Samaritan Center or the church.

O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hunt was born icon on July 4, 1909, in Forest City, Mo., to Charles and Minnie (Wood) Hunt. He lived in Missouri and later moved to Shelton, where he attended school through the eighth grade.

He married Betty Claar on May 7, 1931, in Kearney. They later moved to Gibbon, where they lived through most of their marriage. He drove for different trucking firms over the years and retired from Rayburn Truck Line of Gibbon. He worked repairing small engines for several years after he retired.

He was a member of Faith United Church in Gibbon and the Oddfellows Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and working on small engines.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles of Hansell, Iowa, and Richard "Dick" of Kearney; one daughter, Jennie L. Hunt of Denver; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert "Bob" Hunt of Vernonia, Ore.; and three sisters, Pauline Shultz of Ogallala, Lucille Bennett of Carmichael, Calif., and Ruby Champion of Placerville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two infant sisters.

Frank McConnell

CENTRAL CITY -- Frank Adelbert McConnell, 96, of Central City died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Long-Term Care in Central City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Lloyd Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in Pierce Chapel Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Mr. McConnell was born icon on July 5, 1903, in Grand Island to G.A. and Mary Efie (Graham) McConnell. They moved to a farm northwest of Clarks in 1904. He attended Pleasant Hill District 15 School through the 10th grade. He and his parents moved to Central City in 1921, and he supported and cared for them until their deaths.

He married Kate Smith on July 22, 1923. He worked at the Almeda Dairy, was a clerk, worked on oil burners, worked with the well gang and finally became a plumber and tinner at Ros, Cowgill and Hart. He also worked at the local ice plant and on the section crew for the Union Pacific Railroad.

During the Depression, he and his wife operated a lunch stand at the county fair each year. Mr. McConnell became well known for his hamburgers. Eventually, they opened Kate's Root Beer in Central City.

He was also known for his sense of humor and practical jokes. He liked to garden, fish and take pictures. He enjoyed poetry and giving monologues at the country schools' PTAs. He liked to be among the first to get a new gadget.

He joined the Knights of Pythias Lodge in 1939 and was active in local and state lodges as long as health permitted. In 1964, he was grand chancellor of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska.

Survivors include one daughter, Selma Jean Mesner of Central City; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two infant sons, a brother and a sister.

Elizabeth Nelson

LINCOLN -- Elizabeth E. Nelson, 82, of Lincoln, formerly of Hamilton County, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Eastmont Towers in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Monroe Evangelical Free Church at Aurora.

She was born icon to Andrew and Emma Nelson north of Murphy in Hamilton County.

Survivors include three sisters, Marie Nelson and Theodora Nelson, both of Lincoln and Eleanor Walstrom of Michigan.

Verna Freel

SHELTON -- Verna Freel, 93, of Shelton died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church in Shelton.

Memorials are suggested to the family's coice.

Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Freel was bon Sept. 24, 1906, at Shelton to Roy and Carrie (Skeen) Wilcox. She grew up in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1925.

She married Nelson Freel on May 21, 1927. She was a homemaker and worked in a local restaurant for 15 years where she was known for her delicious fried chicken and all varieties of pies.

She was a member of the Shelton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, which she played until she was 88 years old. She enjouyed traveling to visit her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Lorna Jean (Mrs. Lloyd) Loffer of Shelton; one sister, Iona Schanou of Kearney; five grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Leon; four sisters; three brothers; and two great-grandchildren.

Nicholas Hansen

STROMSBURG ­ Nicholas Hansen, 82, of Stromsburg died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at the Stromsburg Midwest Covenant Home.

Services are pending with Palmer Funeral home in Stromsburg.

Grace Rolfsmeyer

KEARNEY -- Grace Rolfsmeyer, 78, of Kearney, formerly of Litchfield, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Litchfield Christian Church. The Rev. Ken Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the Litchfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rolfsmeyer was born icon on Dec. 29, 1920, in Anselmo to Lloyd and Jenny (Land) Horton. She grew up in the Anselmo area.

She married Henry Franssen in 1938. The couple lived east of Litchfield until her husband's death in 1954.

She married Kenneth Becker.

She married Walter Rolfsmeyer on Feb. 18, 1959. They lived in the Pleasant Valley area until Mr. Rolfsmeyer's death in 1977. Mrs. Rolfsmeyer moved to Litchfield and lived there until 1987, when she moved to St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney due to health reasons.

She operated the cafe in Litchfield and worked for two years as a cook at the Midway Hotel in Kearney.

Mrs. Rolfsmeyer was a member of the Litchfield Christian Church and was active in church activities. She was a member of the Elder Grove Club. She was chairwoman of the Old Settlers Parade and was in charge of the church food stand at the Old Settlers Picnic and the Lord's Acre Soup Supper for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Penny Schwab of Pleasanton and Jinnie Riely; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dillard of Tucson, Ariz.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Pat Fletcher; one great-grandson; two brothers; and one sister.
