Friday, Nov. 5, 1999

Lincoln resident Johanna (Danner) White, 58, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln with the Rev. Clif Loucks officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors are two daughters; two sons; one sister, Doris Reichert of Hastings; and six grandchildren.

Doyle Fitzke

Friday, Nov. 5, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Doyle Fitzke, 71, of Longmont, Colo., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Longmont United Hospital in Colorado.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Howe Mortuary chapel in Longmont with the Rev. William Lee officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post No. 32. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Mr. Fitzke was born Oct. 11, 1928, to George and Mary (Williams) Fitzke in Hastings. He grew up in Glenvil and graduated from Glenvil High School. On Dec. 23, 1950, he married Harriet Grace Grothaus in Hastings. They moved to Longmont in 1960. He worked at Dow Chemical for 10 years and Johnson Controls in Denver for 12 years. He was an engineering supervisor for Boulder Community Hospital until he retired in 1994. He had worked as a part-time maintenance and handy man at Fox Hill Country Club in Longmont.

He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and Plumber and Pipe Fitters Local Union No. 208. He also was a member of the American Legion Post No. 32.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Sonja Cormier and Cindy Eikenberg, both of Longmont; two sons, Tom of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Brad of Loveland, Colo.; one brother, Dayle of Kearney; one sister, Beverly Cary of Kentucky; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Colorado in care of the mortuary.

Edward C. Pitts

Friday, Nov. 5, 1999

Former Hastings resident Edward Charles Pitts, 69, of Manti, Utah, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Utah.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Manti City Cemetery with Bishop Tim Richardson officiating. Buchanan Mortuary of Manti is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pitts was born Jan. 1, 1930, to Grace and Edward Charles Sr. Pitts in Trumbull. His father died and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Lee Childers. In 1949 he married Peggy Lou Henry. They moved to southern California in the 1950s. In July 1991, his wife died. In 1993 he married Cathy Thurman. They lived in Manti until his death.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Eddie and Gary of California; one daughter, Sherryl Anderson of California; his mother of Hastings; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather; one son, Jimmy Ray, and one grandchild.

Rodney R. Riley

Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999

Former Hastings resident Rodney R. Riley, 47, of York, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in York.

Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Metz Mortuary chapel in York and services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with the Rev. James Divis officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in York.

Mr. Riley was born Oct. 27, 1952, to Bernard and Edna (Karlin) Riley in Salina, Kan. He attended schools in Nebraska and Kansas.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the FOE Eagles Club in York.

Survivors are his parents of York; and one brother, Randy of Columbus.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph's Catholic School or St. Gregory's Seminary in Seward.

Justin P. 'Judd' Shaw

Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999

Glenvil resident Justin Philip "Judd" Shaw, 21, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Nuckolls County.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery.

Mr. Shaw was born June 25, 1978, to Richard and Sherry (Vap) Shaw in Hastings. He grew up in the Clay County area and graduated in 1997 from Sandy Creek High School. He attended North Central Technical Community College in Beloit, Kan., studying agriculture production. He later moved to Clay Center. He lived in Deweese a short while before moving to Glenvil where he worked at R Lazy K.

He was a member of the Church of the Plains in Edgar. He was a former member of the Clay Center Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Glenvil Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors are his parents of Hastings; two sisters, Jennifer Bailey and Kristin Shaw, both of rural Fairfield; and his grandparents, Jean and Bob Swanson of Edgar, Jim and Hattie Schreve of Hastings and Dennis Vap of Glenvil.

Lillian A. McCune

Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999

Former Harvard resident Lillian A. (Brehm) McCune, 91, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harvard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marvin Coffey officiating. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. McCune was born May 16, 1908, to Conrad and Magdalena (Hamburger) Brehm in Harvard. On Jan. 28, 1933, she married Alvin McCune in Harvard. She moved to Battle Creek in 1993. In March 1996 her husband died.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are two daughters, Shirley Engel of Pomona, Kan., and Karen Osborn of Battle Creek; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers.

Memorials may be given to the church.

John C. DeWitt

Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999

Hastings resident John Charles DeWitt, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.

Rosary is 10 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m., both Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. Burial will be in the Roseland Cemetery. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. DeWitt was born April 22, 1907, to John W. and Catherine V. (Klein) DeWitt in rural Roseland. He graduated from Roseland High School in 1926. He farmed near Roseland until he retired.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and a former member of 4-H.

Survivor is one sister, Rosalie D. DeWitt of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.

Raymond Reiners

Hastings resident Raymond Reiners, 84, of 231 E. Third St., died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Lester E. Smith

Friday, April 30, 1999

Hastings resident Lester E. Smith, 86, of 824 N. Baltimore Ave. died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carl Utley officiating. Burial with masonic rites will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may sign the book noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8-11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born April 3, 1913, to Earl and Frances (Ferguson) Smith in Hastings. He lived in Kimball for 17 years before returning to Hastings in 1934. He worked for Dutton-Lainson Co. for 43 years. On Oct. 16, 1943, he married Cora Belle Carlisle.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church; Hastings Masonic Lodge No. 50, of which he was secretary for 15 years; Scottish Rite; and Tehama Shrine.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Jerald L. and James, both of Hastings; one sister, Wilma Graham of Lincoln; two brothers, Robert and Richard, both of Hastings; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church.

Esther R. Waugh

Monday, Jan. 17, 2000

Red Cloud resident Esther R. (Frey) Waugh, 93, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Royce Rexilius officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Mrs. Waugh was born Jan. 17, 1907, to John and Sophia (Blattner) Frey in Guide Rock. She attended Pleasant Hill rural school in Webster County. In 1924 she married Joseph Ralph Barnason. They farmed in Eckley north of Guide Rock. They divorced in 1947. From 1946-70 she worked as a nurse's aide at Engelside Hospital in Hastings. On Aug. 26, 1950, she married George Waugh. He died Feb. 25, 1967. In 1971 she started working part-time at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings until she retired. She moved to Red Cloud in 1985.

She was a member of the Red Cloud Congregational Church and the Hastings Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are one son, Joe Barnason of Superior; three sisters, Frances Brubaker and Evelyn Oberheide, both of Red Cloud; and Ardis Gerlach of Blue Hill; three brothers, Everette, Marion and Neil, all of Red Cloud; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Jean; one son, Norman; one sister; and one brother.

Vera E. Schmidt

Monday, Jan. 17, 2000

Former Blue Hill resident Vera E. (Mitzelfelt) Schmidt, 82, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Mayflower Home in Grinnell.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Blue Hill with the Rev. John Ross officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schmidt was born March 9, 1917, to William and Emelia (Waterman) Mitzelfelt in Blue Hill. On Oct. 6, 1940, she married Floyd A. Schmidt. He died Jan. 26, 1994. She moved to Grinnell in 1995.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and its Church Women.

Survivors are one son, Melvin of Tremont, Ill.; two daughters, LaVerda Fitzgerald of Grinnell and Ella McKinney of Malcom; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty; two brothers; two stepbrothers; one sister; and one stepsister.

Memorials may be given to the church or the donor's choice.

Jeffrey L. Karr

Monday, Jan. 17, 2000

Blue Hill resident Jeffrey L. Karr, 33, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Bladen with the Revs. Baldeo Singh and Mike Lehr officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Bladen. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Karr was born Jan. 13, 1967, to Norman Robert and Regina (Krichau) Karr in Red Cloud. He lived with his parents in Bladen and Blue Hill. He attended school through Educational Service Unit 9.

Survivors are his mother of Blue Hill; four sisters, Charlene Reiman, Pamela Karr and Patty Karr, all of Blue Hill, and Tammie Strickland of Stanford; and two brothers, Garold of Hastings and Craig of Blue Hill.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
