Edward E. Durham

NORTH HAMPTON - Edward Eugene Durham Sr., 81, of 20 Old Locke Road, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at the Pheasant Wood Nursing Home in Peterborough.

Born in Pickens, S.C., Aug. 16, 1920, he was a son of the late George I. and Lenora S. (Turner) Durham.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he settled in the Seacoast area after the war and had resided in North Hampton since the 1960s

A brick mason by trade, he owned and operated Seacoast Masonry for 30 years, retiring in 1986. In the early 1960s, he was one of the first three full-time firefighters in the North Hampton Fire Department.

He was the husband of the late Mildred (Harris) Durham, who died last December, and was predeceased by a son, Edward Eugene Durham Jr., who died in 1993.

Family members include two sons, Ronald B. Durham of Wells, Maine, and Martin I. Durham of Rindge; two stepsons, Robert L. Shields of Bedford and Dana K. Shields of Hampton; one stepdaughter, Karen Shields of Concord; two brothers, Glen Durham of Birmingham, Ala., and Ralph Durham of Greenville, S.C.; three sisters, Lib Sims of Pickens, S.C., Ruth Davis of Greenville, S.C., and Faye Collins of Greenville, S.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DURHAM - Edward E. Durham, 81, of 20 Old Locke Road, North Hampton, died Sept. 9, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to either the Audubon Society of N.H., 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301-8200, or the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Rena Hecker

RYE - Memorial services for Rena (Baum) Hecker, 97, of 13 Oceanview Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001.

The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor of the Greenland Community Church, officiated. In attendance were representatives from the Third Friday Club and the Rye Over 55 Club.

Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, at the convenience of the family.

Theresa Perkins

PORTSMOUTH - Theresa Perkins, 83, of 110 Clinton St., died on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Portsmouth on May 11, 1918, the daughter of Leonardo and Pia (Fracassi) Procario, she was a lifelong resident here. She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Ernest L. Perkins; one daughter, Mary Ellen Keeler of Manchester; one son, Ernest L. Perkins Jr. of Exeter; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

PERKINS - Theresa (Procario) Perkins, 83, of Portsmouth, died Sept. 17, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Robert G. LeBlanc

LEE - Robert G. LeBlanc, professor emeritus of geography at the University of New Hampshire, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, aboard a hijacked commercial airliner that crashed into the World Trade Center. He was 70.

He lived in Lee with his wife, Andrea. Born in Nashua, he was the son of Lea and John LeBlanc.

A veteran of the Korean war, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1953. He then earned his bachelor's degree at UNH, studied at the University of Oslo and the University College, University of London, and completed his master's and his doctoral degrees in geography at the University of Minnesota.

He was a cultural geographer, beginning his career at UNH in 1963, and served with distinction until his retirement in 1999. He served as acting chair and chair of the department for nearly 10 years.

He was a scholar in Canadian studies, specializing in Acadian migration and Franco-American communities in New England mill towns. His insatiable curiosity about people and other cultures inspired him to travel the world. He returned to share his experiences with the community and the hundreds of students he taught during his career.

He was honored as a Whiting Foundation Fellow in 1983, received the Distinguished Service Award of the New England-St. Lawrence Valley Geographical Society in 1988, and participated in the N.H. Council for Canadian Studies and served as incorporator of the Franco-American Center of Manchester. He was the founder of the Eastern Historical Geography Association.

In addition to his wife, family members include three sons, John LeBlanc of San Francisco, Paul LeBlanc of Portsmouth, and Kjell Youngren and his wife, Sonya, of Redmond, Ore.; two daughters, Carolyn LeBlanc of Lee, and Nissa Youngren and her husband, Nicholas Ruth, of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandsons, Robert Reed and Kai Youngren; his former wife, Solveig, of Portsmouth; a sister, Claire of Nashua; and a brother, Edgar and his wife and family of Norwood, Mass.

LeBLANC - Robert LeBlanc, a professor of geography at the University of New Hampshire since 1963, died Sept. 11, 2001, aboard United Airlines Flight 175 when it crashed into the World Trade Center. A memorial service will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, in Johnson Theatre on the UNH campus. The service will be immediately followed by a gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life, which will be held in the Granite State Room of the Memorial Union Building. In lieu of flowers, family members request that donations be made to the Robert G. LeBlanc Memorial Fund at the UNH Foundation, 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, NH 03824. The fund will be used to establish a scholarship for students of French-Canadian descent.

Joyce A. Sadowski

YORK, Maine - Joyce Ann Sadowski, 69, of Yorke Ridge Way, died unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at her residence.

Born in Northampton, Mass., on May 15, 1932, she was the daughter of Joseph F. and Anna M. (Probulis) Cadette. She was a 1950 graduate of Northampton High School and attended the University of Maryland.

She was a secretary for the University of Massachusetts in Amherst for five years. For two years she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as a secretary in the division now known as NASA.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Northampton and St. Christopher Church in York. She was past president of the Northampton Jaycee-ettes and an avid reader and flower arranger. She loved to travel and was proud of the fact that she had visited all 50 states as well as many countries abroad.

She was a devoted mother and loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her husband, John R. Sadowski of York; a daughter, Lynn E. Sadowski of Charlestown, Mass.; and a brother, Donald Cadette of North Hollywood, Calif.

SADOWSKI - Joyce A. Sadowski, of Yorke Ridge Way, York, Maine, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at her residence. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

SINCLAIR - Stanley Sinclair, 70, of 619 Silver Street, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Friends and relatives may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home with the Rev. David L. Slator, pastor, First Parish Church Congregational, Dover, officiating. Burial will follow in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford. Those who wish may make donations in his name to the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, N.H. 03110-5032, or to the American Red Cross, c/o Citizen's Bank for the Twin Tower Disaster Fund.

Vernon Voige Cool

DOVER - Vernon Voige Cool, 79, of 16 Eliot Park, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Born Nov. 22, 1921, in Ilion, N.Y., he was the son of Voige J. and Mable (Reed) Cool.

He was a graduate of Ilion High School and attended Syracuse University.

A decorated Air Force veteran of 25 years, he retired at Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, in 1967 as chief master sergeant.

He served during World War II with the 8th Air Force in England, and during the Korean Conflict with the famed 4th Fighter Group.

He married Margaret Drumm of Ilion in 1954. She predeceased him in 1991.

Subsequent to his Air Force service, he was employed by the N.H. Department of Employment Security as an interviewer and veterans employment counselor, retiring in August 1983.

He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Second Air Division Association and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

A bowler since his youth, he was a member of the Seacoast Military Retired Bowling League for 14 years.

Survivors include his son, Dale Cushman Shepard and his wife, Nancy, of Wellington, Fla.; a grandson, John Vernon Shepard of Wellington; a beloved companion of nine years, Charlotte Walter of Hampton; an uncle; and several cousins.

Hardy Jones

LAUDERHILL, Fla. - Hardy (Tom) Jones, 65, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, in Lauderhill.

Born in Seneca Falls, N.Y., on June 21, 1936, he was the son of the late Harry W. and Ethel M. (Persons) Jones.

He grew up in Portsmouth, N.H., attended Portsmouth schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1955. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Most recently, he worked for Choice Point Computer Co. in Boca Raton, where he was service line manager. Previously he worked for NASA in Houston, Texas; IBM in Boston; and Hendrix Electronics in Manchester, N.H.

While in Portsmouth, he was a member of the North Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir. He was a well-known musician in the Seacoast area, as well as other parts of the country.

He was the husband of Sheila (Dewyngaerdt) Jones, for 26 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas J. Jones of Los Angeles, Calif., and Bill Jones of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Kelly Dabek of Naples, Fla.; two granddaughters, Dyvana Jones of Los Angeles, and Breana Dabek of Manchester, N.H.; seven sisters, Anna J. Jones of Venice, Fla., and Jane E. Reed and husband, Emerson, Ida Tilley Burke, Marjorie B. Kelso, Lucy M. Fair, Sharon P. Jenkins and husband, Tim, and Karen J. Davis, all of Portsmouth; one brother, Roy W. Jones and friend, Pam, of Manchester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry W. Jones Jr.; and four sisters, Elaine M. Jones, Ethel M. Brown, Cora F. Moody and Jean M. Earle.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. at the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth. Friends invited.

Virginia D. Hood

EXETER - Virginia Day Hood, 92, of Jady Hill Avenue, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at her home after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 8, 1909, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John H. and Florence W. (Martel) Chisholm.

She resided in the Seacoast area and primarily in Exeter for more then 50 years. In her earlier years, she worked as a secretary for several companies in the Boston area.

She was a communicant of the Christ Episcopal Church of Exeter.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Ellison Day, who died in 1979.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, James L. Hood of Exeter; three adopted children, United States Marine Corps member Virginia Emmons of 29 Palms, Calif., Christina English of Sands Point, N.Y., and John Hood of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and two cousins, Louise Taylor of Wyoming and Mrs. Richard (Joanne) Coughlin of Peabody, Mass., to whom she was very close.

HOOD - Virginia Day Hood, 92, of Jady Hill Avenue, Exeter, died Sept. 18, 2001. There are no calling hours. A Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Christ Episcopal Church of Exeter, 43 Pine St. The Revs. John Denson, Robert H. Malm of Alexandria, Va., and John Adams will officiate. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice. The Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of the arrangements.

Josephine Chamberland

HAMPTON - Josephine "Joyce" Chamberland, 70, of 240 High St., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born Jan. 5, 1931, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of the late John and Rose (Curran) Brady.

She was a graduate of Girls School of Boston. She was a communicant of Our Lady Of The Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton and had lived in Hampton for 41 years.

Family members include her husband, Robert P. Chamberland of Hampton; two sons, Alfred P. Chamberland of East Hampton, Mass., and Thomas S. Chamberland of Framingham, Mass.; and one grandson, Alexander V. Chamberland of East Hampton, Mass.

She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Kenney.

CHAMBERLAND - Josephine "Joyce" Chamberland of 240 High St., Hampton, died Sept. 19, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, Saturday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton, Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Violet Cecile Jelley Stevens

PETERSBURGH, N.Y. - The Rev. Violet Cecile Jelley Stevens, 93, longtime Petersburgh resident, died on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H.

Born on June 17, 1908, in Pelleston, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Alfred F. and Effa A. Robinson Jelley. She was the wife of the late Rev. Daniel E. Stevens who died on Sept. 7, 1983.

In 1963, she and her husband were missionaries to the Navajo Indians in both Ojo Encino and Manuelito, N.M., until 1975, when they moved to Berlin, N.Y. In 1976, they moved to Petersburgh where she, along with her husband, ministered to the communities of Cherry Plain and Berlin.

In 1982, she was a founding member of the Shiloh Assembly of God in Petersburgh and at the time of her death was a member of the New Life Assembly in Raymond, N.H. While missionaries, she and her husband traveled through the United States in their ministry. She moved to Newmarket, N.H., in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hodgeman of Pownal, Vt., and Virginia C. (Ginger) Alexander of Newmarket, N.H.; siblings, the Rev. Ralph Jelley of Greenfield, Mass., Grace Wilson and Sylvia Hodgeman, both of Petersburgh, Harold Jelley of Westfield, Mass., James Jelley of North Adams, Mass., and Frederick Jelley of Ludlow, Vt.; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by siblings Lyle Jelley, Marguerite Levitt, Rachael Thibodeau, and Mildred Wilder; and great-grandchildren Jared Shafer and Kyle Jones.

STEVENS - The Rev. Violet C. Stevens, 93, longtime resident of Petersburgh, N.Y., died on Sept. 17, 2001. Funeral services will be on Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the Green Mountain Christian Center in Bennington, Vt., where the Revs. Dave Hickey and Jim Michaels will officiate. Burial will follow in the Jelley Family Cemetery located next to the Shiloh Assembly of God in Petersburgh. A visiting time for family and friends will start in the Green Mountain Christian Center at noon on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mission Department of the Assembly of God, in care of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, P.O. Box 361, Petersburgh, NY 12138.

ROWAN - Rosalie H. Rowan of Wilson Road, Kittery, Maine, died Sept. 13, 2001, in York, Maine. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in The Church at Spruce Creek, Wilson Road, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Church at Spruce Creek, Box 413, Eliot, ME 03903; or to the VNS Hospice, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

COOL - Vernon Voige Cool, 79, of Eliot Park, Dover, died Sept. 15, 2001. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery, Old Forge, N.Y., at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, c/o Twin Towers Disaster Relief Fund, Strafford County Chapter, 3 Webb Place, P.O. Box 1158, Dover, NH 03820.

Gertrude F. Palmer

HAMPTON - The service for Gertrude F. Palmer, 92, of Hampton, who died Sept. 12, 2001, was held Monday, Sept. 17, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor, officiated. Jean Goss was organist.

Private interment was in the High Street Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Knowlton.
