Etter Irene Evans, 75
Etter Irene Evans, 75, of Westfield, died on Tuesday, September 2, 1997 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Salem, North Carolina, she had lived in Westfield for 31 years.
She had been an electrical technician at Western Electric in Kearny, where she worked for 35 years before retiring.
She was a member of Warren’s Temple Church of the Living God in Scotch Plains, and a member of the Pioneers, a national electrical society.
She was predeceased by her brother, William Evans.
Surviving are a son, George Evans of Westfield; a daughter, Arlene Pappas of Westfield; a brother, Jose Evans of New York City, and three sisters, Sally Evans of the Bronx, Melissa Jackson of New York City and Anabell Sykes of Newark.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 6, at Warren’s Temple Church of the Living God.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Plinton Funeral Home in Westfield.

Winifred Doane, 94, Was Member Of Presbyterian Church Programs
Winifred Doane, 94, of Pitman, died on Tuesday, September 2, 1997 at the Pitman Manor.
Born in Brooklyn, Miss Doane spent her formative years in Bayonne. The family moved to Westfield in 1920, where they lived for 40 years. She moved to Plainfield in 1960 and to Rossmor in 1969, where she had lived until moving to Pitman nine years ago.
She graduated from Newark Normal School in 1923 and had taught first grade in Roselle for three years. She later taught at Emerson School in Plainfield for 35 years before retiring in 1965.
Miss Doane received her master’s degree in education from Rutgers University in 1950.
She had been an active member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield where she was involved in the Sunday School program, the Elizabeth Norton Bible Class and the choir for many years before moving to Rossmor.
Surviving are a niece, Barbara M. Doane of Westfield, and a nephew, Colin Robertson Doane of El Paso, Texas.
Graveside services were held yesterday, Wednesday, September 10, under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, in Westfield. Interment was at the Revolutionary Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

Robert W. Selvig, Jr., 53, Firefighter Was Cited for Heroism and Courage
Robert W. Selvig, Jr., 53, of Roselle, formerly of Westfield, died on Wednesday, September 3, 1997 at the University Hospital in Newark.
Born in Plainfield, Mr. Selvig had lived in Westfield and Garwood before moving to Roselle 20 years ago.
He was a firefighter for the Newark Fire Department for 23 years and had received three commendations for heroism and courage in the line of duty.
Mr. Selvig was recognized in 1979 for making a heroic rescue under difficult conditions, and in 1983 and 1988 he was honored for courage and efficiency in saving lives.
He also received numerous citations for valor from both the City of Newark and the state.
Surviving are his parents, Charlotte Hanna Selvig and Robert W. Selvig of Tewksbury, and two sisters, Kristine Selvig of Warren and Sandy Ciszewski of Sussex.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 8, at the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Barnabas Hospital’s Burn Unit or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

A. C. Becker, Sr., 97
Albert C. Becker, Sr., 97, of Franklin, formerly of Westfield, died on Friday, September 5, 1997 at home.
Born in Westfield, Mr. Becker had lived in the Baptistown section of Kingwood before moving in 1959 to Franklin’s Pittstown section.
He was a retired farmer.
He was predeceased by his wife, Julia Peters Becker, in 1985.
Surviving are three daughters, Helen Ihling of Branson, Missouri, Doris Alpaugh of Moneta, Virginia, and Patricia Roever of Flemington; five sons, Albert C. Becker, Jr. of Elnora, Tennessee, Richard S. Becker of Fullerton, California, George M. Becker of Flemington, Edward Becker of the Sidney section of Franklin and Robert Becker of Mullica Hill in Harrison Township, Gloucester County; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 9, at Our Lady of Victories Roman Catholic Church in Baptistown.
Arrangements were handled by the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington.

Dorothy C. O’Brien
Dorothy C. O’Brien died on Saturday, September 6, 1997 at the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born and raised in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Mrs. O’Brien had been a resident of Westfield for 43 years.
She had been a secretary for Rosenthal and Parks Insurance Company in Newark for 15 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a communicant of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield and a member of the Rosary Society and the Senior Group at the church. She was a volunteer at the Meridian Nursing Center in Westfield for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph O’Brien, on January 8.
Surviving are her daughter, Sister Donna Marie O’Brien of Clark; three sons, Robert O’Brien of Monroe, Richard O’Brien of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and Neal O’Brien of West Orange; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, September 9, at Holy Trinity Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. John the Apostle School, Valley Road, Clark, 07066, or to the Dominican Sisters Infirmary Fund, 1 Ryerson Avenue, Caldwell, 07006.

Frances M. Siburn
Frances M. Brennan Siburn died on Sunday, August 31, 1997 at Glenside Nursing Home in New Providence.
Born in South Amboy, she had lived in Westfield for the last 35 years.
She had been a secretary in the Grants Office of Kean College in Union for 16 years, retiring in November of 1996.
She was a graduate of Thomas Alva Edison College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.
She was a communicant of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Her husband, Professor John J. Siburn, died in 1974.
Surviving are her two sons, David Siburn of Rahway and James Siburn of Westfield, and two grandchildren.
Private services were held on Wednesday, September 3. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.
Memorial donations may be made to Children’s Specialized Hospital, 150 New Providence Road in Mountainside.

Frances D. Hall, 59
Frances D. Hall, 59, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, September 6, 1997 at home.
Born in Lottsburg, Virginia, she had lived in Newark before moving to Scotch Plains 27 years ago.
Mrs. Hall was a customer service representative for the Dole Food Corporation in Mountainside for 15 years. Previously, she had worked for the Guismer Manufacturing Company in Cranford and the Mold Casting Company in Newark.
Mrs. Hall was a volunteer at the Scotch Plains Public Library and a member of the Cathedral, Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy, where she was also a Trustee and a volunteer.
Surviving are her husband, Garrison T. Hall, Sr.; a son, Garrison T. Hall, Jr. of Cranford; a daughter, Cheryl Wanda Crandall of Baltimore; two sisters, Mary L. Dameron of The Bronx and Ida O. Dameron of Edison, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, September 10, at the Cathedral, Second Baptist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Cathedral, Second Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1608, Perth Amboy, 08862.
