Archie St. John

BOWERSTOWN — Mr. Archie I. St. John Jr., 74, died at his home with his family at his side on Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

He was born in Cooperstown on Aug. 9, 1928, a son of Archie and Adelaide (Groth) St. John Sr.

Archie attended Cooperstown Central School. He owned Cooperstown Disposal Company with his brother-in-law, Robert Mulligan, for seven years.

In 1965, he earned his general equivalency diploma and attended Mohawk Valley Community College for a semester. He then enrolled at the State University College at Oneonta at 35.

He graduated in three years and became a sixth-grade teacher at Mt. Markham Central School in West Winfield.

He then completed his Master's in Education in Guidance Counseling. Archie retired in 1988, having taught for 20 years.

Archie married Dorothy Archer on Dec. 24, 1948. Together they owned and operated the Fireplace Antiques Shop for 28 years.

As part of their business, they traveled to Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and throughout New York State to 25 antiques shows a year.

Archie was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown, a past member of the Cooperstown Country Club and the Leatherstocking Golf Course. He and his son, Archie III, won the member-guest tournament in 1976.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy, of Bowerstown; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Chet Yastrzemski of Southampton on Long Island; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kent and Grace St. John of Cooperstown, and Archie III and Julie St. John of Massena; seven grandchildren, Kaina and Korri St. John of Cooperstown, Archie St. John IV of Denver, Colo., Crystal St. John of Massena, Adam and Dara Yastrzemski of Toddsville, Craig Yastrzemski of York, Pa., and Lou Ann Conteras of California; a great-granddaughter, Emma Veronica Yastrzemski of Toddsville; many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren including, Gerald Kuhn and Jeffrey Dwyer; two brothers and their wives, David and Delane St. John of Milford, and Frederick and Ellen St. John of Cooperstown; a sister-in-law, Alie St. John of Cooperstown; a brother-in-law and his wife, Robert and Helen Mulligan, of Fly Creek; several nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friend, David Welsh and his wife, Rebecca, of Cooperstown.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Mulligan; and two brothers, Donald and John St. John.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown. The family will be in attendance.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 22, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

Burial will be later in Lakewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Nancy A. Snyder

MOUNT VISION — Nancy A. Snyder, 67, formerly of Binghamton, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at her home.

She was predeceased by her husband, William, in 2001, as well as her father, Arthur Spencer.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Micha Snyder, Laurens; a daughter Julie Andrews, Mount Vision; four grandchildren, Joshua and Jamie Snyder, Michael and Katie Andrews; her mother, Shirley Spencer, Binghamton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Richard and Dawn Spencer, Binghamton, and Edgar Spencer, Bainbridge; a sister and brother-in-law, Leisa and Steve Bodway, of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a retiree of the Binghamton Psychiatric Center with 25 years of service as a registered nurse. Following her retirement, she worked for some time at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was a graduate of Binghamton North High School and the Wilson Hospital School of Nursing.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 137 Robinson St., Binghamton, with the Rev. Paul Towers officiating.

Friends are invited to call Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Oneonta Family Practice, in care of Fox Hospital Foundation, 1 Norton Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

M. Evelyn Wilson

WALTON — M. Evelyn Wilson passed on to her heavenly home on March 18, 2003, at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

She was born in Pepacton, the daughter of Edgar and Arantha Youmans.

Her husband, Niles, and a sister, Bertha Foreman, both of Walton; and two sisters-in-law, Beverly Yeomans of Neversink and Delight Youmans of Walton, survive her. Also, a much-loved great-niece, Lauri Walley of Walton, and several other nieces and nephews; a foster child Charles (Bud) Smith of Ocala, Fla.; and a special friend Georgiana McCall and her family of Beers Brook.

All her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews of the Wilson family dearly loved Evelyn.

Two brothers, George and Harold; and one sister Mary, predeceased Evelyn.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Plymouth Community Church, with the Rev. William Robertson and the Rev. Joseph Bokel officiating.

Calling hours will be on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Riverside Alliance Church, Walton.

Burial will be at a later date in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Plymouth Community Church or Riverside Alliance Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Charlotte Kleusch

ONEONTA — Charlotte Kleusch, 88, of Oneonta, died after a lengthy illness March 19, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Phurenger, Germany, the daughter of Herman and Edith Drexel.

She married Karl Kleusch in Germany in 1940. Mr. Kleusch died July 29, 2000.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edward Elliott

MORRIS — Together Again! After a long 3 1/2 year wait, Edward Elliott of Morris returned to the side of his faithful wife on March 3, 2003, from the Veterans Home in Oxford.

Ed was born in Bridgewater on July 1, 1918, the son of Jesse DeAlton Lloyd and Lena Ballard Lloyd. Lena died four months later, and he was brought to Morris to live with Lena's aunt and uncle, Frank and Sarah Elliott, who later adopted him.

Ed lived his entire 841/2 years on the family farm. He graduated from Morris Central School in 1937 where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. He attended Cazenovia Junior College, where he also lettered in all three sports, and graduated in 1940.

After graduation, Ed married Lura Belle (Peg) Rayburn in Briar Cliff Manor, and went to work at Bendix Scintilla in the Engineering Lab, settling in Morris.

After the outbreak of World War II, Ed enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, and served with the 15th Air Force in Northern Africa and Italy as a waist gunner on a B-24. After the war, in 1946, Ed returned to Scintilla.

A year later, he and Peg decided it was time to take over the running of the family farm. Together, they ran the farm on South Broad Street for 18 years.

During the years on the farm, Ed also served in many community affairs. He served for 15 years on the School Board, for eight years as Mayor, he brought the first ambulance to Morris, and for eight years as Town Councilman.

He was a past Master of the Masonic Lodge, a past President of Rotary, a past Commander of the American Legion, a member of the Fire Department, and later on the Cemetery Board and as a member of the Methodist Church Board.

In 1965, Ed and Peg sold most of the farm, subdivided a portion into lots, and built a new home on what became known as Meadow Lane.

Also in 1965, Ed went to work for Otsego County as the Executive Secretary to the Civil Defense Director. He later became the first Personnel Officer and the county's first Purchasing Agent.

Ed retired in February 1981, after 15 years.

Since retirement, Ed has enjoyed his hobby of woodworking; repairing things for people in his shop; and visiting with his many friends at the Coffee Shop and around town.

Ed was preceded in death by his faithful wife, Peg, who died on Aug. 21, 1999. They had spent 59 years together.

They are survived by their three children, Lynn (Jean, of Cedar City, Utah), Julie (Peter, of New Hartford), and Jamie (New Lisbon); 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

At their request, Ed and Peg's ashes will be spread 'under the cherry tree.'

A coffee hour was held at the Coffee Shop on March 11, 2003, with many of Ed's friends stopping in.

In lieu of cards or flowers, the family has requested donations to the Morris Emergency Squad.

Helen M. Mattice

EAST WORCESTER — Helen M. Mattice, 84, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Helen (Petrovcic) Podpadec.

She married Herman E. Mattice on Nov. 25, 1939. He predeceased her on March 17, 1998.

Mrs. Mattice was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Brooks of Pine Plains; two sons, David and his wife, Donna Mattice, of Schenectady, and Shane and his wife, Elaine, of Oneonta; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother Victor Bobnick of Rotterdam; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother Joseph Bobnick; and two sisters, Eleanor Skinner and Dorothy Podpadec.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 21, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at East Worcester Lower Cemetery, Route 7.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the East Worcester Fire Department, P.O. Box 781, East Worcester, NY 12064, the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197, or the Catskill Area Hospice Inc. & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Sadie M. Nader

ONEONTA — Sadie M. Nader, 80, of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 20, 1922, the daughter of Elias and Julia (Abouanni) Moffet.

She was married to Nausif Nader. He predeceased her in 1968.

Sadie was employed by Mold-A-Matic for a number of years, and prior to that she worked at Enterprise Aluminum.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, and was a former member and officer of the Oneonta Yankees Booster Club.

Sadie was a loving mother, sister-in-law, aunt and a friend to many.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Albert S. Nader of Oneonta; two sisters-in-law, Julia Church of Oneonta and Jemele Mitrano of New York City; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins; and her very best friend, Madeline Santos Wilson.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Jean Nader, in 1972; a son George Nader in 2002; a sister Genevieve Moffett in 1992; and her brother, George Moffett, in 2002.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call on Friday evening, March 21, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to Opportunities For Otsego, 3 West Broadway, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Melba E. Shafer

RICHMONDVILLE — Melba E. Shafer, 79, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born March 4, 1924, in Schenectady, the daughter of James and Sarah (Cody) DeBraccio.

She married Francis L. Shafer in Cobleskill in 1947. He predeceased her in November of 1983.

Mrs. Shafer was retired from the New York State Criminal Justice Department in Albany, where she worked in the fingerprinting classification department.

She was a member of the West Richmondville Church, the Seward Valley Grange, the East Worcester Fish & Game Club, and a life member of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Barbara Germond of Worcester, Bernice and her husband, Freeland "Stub," VanBuren of East Worcester, James A. and his wife, Gail, Shafer of Madison, Ala., Lynn F. Shafer of Sidney, and Sharee M. Klontz of Virginia Beach, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Naomi Fancher of Richmondville and Jeanne Hotaling of Middleburgh; a sister-in-law, Madelyn Silk; a brother-in-law, Stuart Shafer; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Ernie VanBuren; and a son-in-law, Doug Germond.

Calling hours will be held from 1 p.m. to the funeral service time at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the E.J. Skinner Co. in Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be at the Richmondville Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Cleo M. Burdick

ONEONTA — Cleo M. Burdick, 77, of Oneonta, died after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born on Feb. 17, 1926, in Stilwater, Okla., the daughter of John and Margaret (Lake) Monteith.

She married Frederick Burdick on Nov. 6, 1943, in Fresno, Calif.

Mrs. Burdick was a buyer for Sears in Los Angeles, Calif., buying Ladies Ready to Wear for the West Coast.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.

Mr. and Mrs. Burdick had been residents of Oneonta for the past 26 years, having previously lived in California.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Frederick Burdick, at home; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Gerald Burdick, who died in December of 1994.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be private and held later at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Those who wish may make contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta.

Mary D. Kozak

BINGHAMTON — Mary D. Kozak, 90, of Binghamton, died Thursday morning, March 20, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Alan J. Kozak, Cooperstown, and Duane and Carol Kozak, Chenango Bridge; three grandchildren, Lora and Tom Becker, Jennifer and Jeffrey Hoffman, all of Slingerlands, and Steven Kozak, Arlington, Va.; a great-granddaughter, Caroline Becker; brother, Stephen and Marge Barna, Rochester, Minn.; a sister Susan B. Dougherty, Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Binghamton.

Mary was valedictorian in the Class of 1934 at Charles S. Wilson School of Nursing, and worked until retirement in 1978 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, where she was a night supervisor.

Funeral services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, at 10 a.m. on Monday, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, where a Funeral Mass will be offered.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City.

The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
