James A. Smith
RICHMONDVILLE — James A. Smith, 54, of Summit Street, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Bassett Hospital in Schoharie County in Cobleskill, after being stricken at work.
Born July 15, 1949, in Cobleskill, he was the son of the late Alva Smith and his mother, Myrtle Springstead Smith of Carlisle, who survives him.
He was employed as a forklift operator for the Wal-Mart District Center in Sharon Springs for the past two years. Before that he was an inspector for Rural Water and taught classes to water departments for renewal of their licenses. At one time, he was superintendent of the village of Richmondville Highway Department and water treatment center.
Along with his mother, survivors include his wife, Carolyn (VanBuren) Smith, whom he married June 14, 1975; a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Chris Bellinger of Middleburgh; three sons, Tim Smith and wife, Denise, of Richmondville, Mike Smith of Cobleskill and Dan Smith and wife, Carla, of Schoharie; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judi and Charles Purchia of Glens Falls and Jane and Ray Rossco of Carlisle; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Jackie Smith of California and Jeff and Allyce Smith of Richmondville; and six grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Main Street, Richmondville.
Burial will be in Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Harry E. Davis
GUILFORD — Harry E. Davis 67, of Guilford passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Chenango Memorial Nursing Home in Norwich.
He was born Jan. 1, 1937, to the late Jay E. and Amy (Rice) Davis.
Harry was a supervisor for Borden Chemical Company in Bainbridge when he retired. He also worked for McDowell and Walker in repairs.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Beth D. and Bob Jensen of Norwich, Sherry and Ken Wildenstein of Unadilla and Valerie J. and Tim Stafford of Masonville; a son, Harry J. Davis of Norwich; brother and sister-in-law, William R. and Linda Davis of Afton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathryn and Vincent Cuozzo of Sidney, Mary-Ann and Jim Wright of Unadilla and Penny and Andre Constantino of Virginia; eight grandchildren, Nicole Davis, Renee, Scott and Jill Stafford, Megan and Nathan Wildenstein, Kaitlyn and Kara Davis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by a son, Michael E. Davis; a brother, Mahlon "Pete" Davis; and a sister, Ruby.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
There will be no visitation.

Hartley G. Paffenroth
ONEONTA — Hartley G. Paffenroth, 68, of Oneonta, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, following a three-month illness.
He was born Aug. 3, 1935, in Warwick and served his country in the Armed Forces from 1956 to 1969.
Hartley was a 22-year resident of Oneonta and an employee of The Daily Star newspaper. He was also a member of Woodhaven Golf Club in Oneonta.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Ruth Ann; his five children, Laura Hendricks, Andrew Paffenroth, David Paffenroth, Victoria McDonald and Bryden Miller; and eight grandchildren.
There will be no funeral services.

Lois Marie Simmerman
COOPERSTOWN — A funeral service for Lois Marie Simmerman, 93, of Cooperstown and formerly of Florida, who died May 9, 2004, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, pastor, officiating.
Burial will take place in Lake Worth Memory Gardens in Lake Worth, Fla.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Judith Hamilton Cruickshank
SOUTHHAMPTON — A graveside committal service for Judith Hamilton Cruickshank, 96, of Southhampton and formerly of Cooperstown, who died Feb. 7, 2004, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2004, in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery with Fr. Normal Sieme officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Mary Eliza Hoke
SOUTH VALLEY — Committal services for Mary Eliza Hoke, who passed away Jan. 31, 2004, will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.
Burial will follow.

Donald R. Rorick
VESTAL — Donald R. Rorick, 75, of Vestal, died Thursday, May 14, 2004, after a long battle with internal scleroderma.
Don was a native of Oneonta and attended St. Mary's Elementary School and Oneonta High School. He and his brother, Paul, were in the plumbing business with their father. Don enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and was stationed in Wisconsin and Germany. Later, he worked in Florida for 20 years as a pipefitter at the nuclear plants.
Don always had a smile. He loved to golf in his later years. He was a life member of the Benevolent and Paternal Order of the Elks. His Catholic faith was, however, uppermost in his life.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Marian Dresser Simpson-Rorick; his children and grandchildren in Florida; Marian's four children and six grandchildren; his brother, Joe Rorick and wife, Dorothy, and his sister, Mary Taylor in California.
He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Rorick.
There will be a Memorial Mass for Donald at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, from Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Endicott. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

Evangeline Sprague
DELHI — Evangeline Grace Sprague, 81, of Delhi passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.
She was born on June 15, 1922, in Arkville, the daughter of Gerard and Grace (Votie) Butler.
She married William E. Sprague in Andes on May 9, 1942. He predeceased her on March 9, 2003.
Evangeline had many loves in her life, including music, flowers, gardening and feeding birds. She thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas season and couldn't wait to decorate her house with lights and colorful Christmas trees.
She held a special place in her heart for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by four children, James (Patricia) Hasbrouck of South Kortright, Beverly (Walter) Kirk of Hobart, William (Diane) Sprague of Hamden, and Robert (Caroline Ferguson) Sprague of Delhi; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Esther Butler of Bainbridge, Elno Tompkins of Downsville and Margaret Lipps of Geneva on the Lake, Ohio; brother-in-law, Gregg Sprague of Andes, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi from 4 to 9 p.m. today, May 17, where the family will be in attendance.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the United Ministry, Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.
Burial will take place following the funeral services in Hamden Cemetery, Hamden.

Brian M. Finne
GUILDERLAND — Brian M. Finne, 26, of Jessamine Lane, Guilderland, formerly of West Davenport, and Daytona Beach, Fla., died Thursday, May 13, 2004, as a result of a construction accident in Trenton, N.J.
Brian was born Dec. 27, 1977, in Oneonta. He was a graduate of Sea Breeze High School in Daytona Beach, Fla., and attended Daytona Community College. Brian was a four-year employee of the Horizon Group of New England in Albany, where he was a construction technician.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and riding ATVs. Brian loved being with his family.
Survivors include his mother, Cheryl Payne, and his stepfather, William, of Guilder1and; his father, John Finne and his stepmother, Sandy, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three brothers, Raymond Carson and his wife, Rosa, of Manresa, Spain, William Payne of Anaheim, Calif., and Michael Finne and his wife, Cathy, of Jacksonville, Fla., and his girlfriend, Rachel Cicerone, of Albany. He is also survived by niece Martina Carson and nephew Jonathan Finne, as well as many loving aunts, uncles and cousins throughout the country.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lynnwood Reformed Church, 3714 Carman Road, Guilderland. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Guilderland.

Lillian M. Heuser
FLEISCHMANNS — Lillian M. Heuser, 101, of Fleischmanns, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.
Born in the Bronx, Lillian was the daughter of Thomas and Kate (Winterble) Thompson.
She was married to Charles J. Heuser. He died Aug. 6, 1985.
Lillian was a seamstress for Sulka & Company, a well-known men's haberdashery store in New York City.
She lived in Fleischmanns since August of 2001.
Lillian is survived by a nephew and four great-nieces.
Calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. today, when there will be a funeral service at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.
Burial will be in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, N.J.

Michael Gonzalez
MARGARETVILLE — Michael R. Gonzalez, 21, of Margaretville, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Albany Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 28, 1983, the son of Marilyn Johnson Gonzalez.
Mike attended Margaretville Central School. He worked for Mike Moretti Landscaping in Margaretville.
He is survived by his mother, Marilyn Gonzalez, of Margaretville; a sister, Paula Gonzalez; two brothers, Larry and Stephen Curless; his maternal grandparents, Ernest and Ethel Johnson, and several aunts and uncles.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Hynes Funeral Home, in Margaretville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the funeral home with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee officiating.

Margaret Vickerson
JORDANVILLE — Mrs. Margaret E. Vickerson passed away Friday, May 14, 2004, at the Folts Home in Herkimer.
She was born Feb. 10, 1925, the daughter of Victor and Anna (Werner) Galusha.
She married Charles W. Vickerson on June 26, 1943, in East Springfield.
She and her family lived in the Van Hornesville area where she devoted herself to her family. She enjoyed cooking and working on the family farm. In 1968, she retired from farming and moved to East Springfield. She was employed as a bus driver for the Springfield and Cherry Valley-Springfield Central school districts until her retirement in 1992.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Charles Demorest of Springfield, Betty Fassett Ulrich and Al Ulrich of East Springfield, Diane and Ronald Hubiak of Richfield Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Erma Vickerson of East Springfield; a good friend, Doug McCarty; 10 grandchildren, Wayne, Carol and Charles Demorest Jr., James Jr., Jason Vickerson, Loretta Vickerson VanDewerker, Dr. Daniel Fassett, Laurie Fassett McNerney, Michelle Hubiak Hoag, and Chad Hubiak; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Robinson of Richfield Springs, Mildred Vair of Eaton and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Vickerson; two sisters, Frances Beach, Buelah Bancroft; and two brothers, Robert and George Galusha.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 18.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley, with the Rev. with Rev. Lyman Johnson of the United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield.
