Eugene J. "Ali Baba" Basta, 73, of Kirkville, formerly of Liverpool, died Saturday. Born in Syracuse, he was a life resident of the Syracuse area and graduated from Vocational High School. He retired in 1990 after 42 years at New Process Gear. He was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1980 for coin snatching. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife of 35 years, the former Mary Ellen McDaniels; two daughters, Carolyn M. Garofalo and Ellen J. Basta, both of Kirkville; two sons, Thomas L. Guilfoil of Cicero and Michael P. Guilfoil of Syracuse; two sisters, Mary Grassi of Binghamton and Pauline Savage of Syracuse; two brothers, Dominick and Michael Basta, both of Syracuse; six grandchildren. Millie Durant Compeau, 94, of 408 Rowland St., Syracuse, died Saturday at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Syracuse. She worked at Aetna Insurance and Deal Florist. She was known as the unofficial mayor of Skunk City. She was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church, a member of Syracuse United Neighbors, a Republican committee member for more than 40 years and a member of the Wagon Wheel Senior Center. Joseph T. Dixon Sr., 99, of North Syracuse died Saturday. He was born in North Syracuse. He retired in 1985 as the operator of the Dixon & Sons vegetable farm in Salina and sold produce at the Syracuse Regional Market. He was a life member of the Onondaga County Vegetable Growers Association and the New York State Farm Bureau and a lifetime communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. Survivors: His wife of 64 years, the former Maryal Hammill; three daughters, Mary L. Gapski of Clay, Kathleen A. Fico of Zion, Ill., and Elizabeth C. Gipe of Liverpool; two sons, Joseph T. Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Robert E. of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a sister, Louise Maloney of North Syracuse; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Navy Armed Guard Association. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors: His companion of 20 years, Maxine Smith; two daughters, Jeanne Proctor of Moravia and Rene Marsh of Desert Hills, Ariz.; six sons, Sidney of New Woodstock, George and Robert, both of Ithaca, Stephen of Locke, Jon of Pleasantville and Mark of Lantana, Fla.; 17 grandchildren. He retired in 1983 after 41 years as a night chief clerk for Conrail. He was a member of First United Church of East Syracuse, Loyal Order of Moose 625 and the Camillus Gun Club. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II and a member of Arthur Butler American Legion Post 359, East Syracuse. Survivors: His wife of 57 years, the former Betty J. Wagner; four daughters, Bonnie Kackison and Nancy Herman, both of East Syracuse, and Barbara Previtire and Debra Houlihan, both of Kirkville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Irene Freeman Weiss, 94, of Yonkers died Wednesday. Born in Elmira, she was a life resident of Syracuse before moving to Yonkers in August. She and her husband operated Milton I. Weiss Insurance. She was a member of the Temple Society of Concord and a volunteer with the Onondaga County Health Department diabetes and blood pressure clinics and at the American Red Cross Blood Donation Center. She was past president of the Syracuse Chapter of Hadassah. Her husband, Milton I., died in 1973. A son, Jerome P., died in 1997. Survivors: A daughter, Judy Gilbert Kautto of Chappaqua; six grandchildren; two great-grandsons. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Temple Society of Concord. She worked at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. She founded Global Feast, a cooking school for children. She volunteered at Chicago's Inspiration Cafe and was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago. Survivors: Her husband of 23 years, James; two daughters, Alexandra and Christina, both of Chicago; her mother, Maria Iuanow of Syracuse; a sister, Katherine Dourdas of DeWitt; a brother, Nicholas Iuanow of Salt Lake City. He retired in 1987 from the physical plant department of Syracuse University after 13 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 1832 in Mattydale and a former member of St. Mary's Church in Baldwinsville. He played rhythm guitar for the Seneca Brats at Hejamada Campgrounds in Montezuma. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife of 22 years, the former Susan Buerkley; five daughters, Jane Scafire of Solvay, Kathleen Victory of Martville, Michelle Reeves of Baldwinsville, Patricia Correia of Flatwoods, W.Va., and Debra Strong of Cicero; two sons, Frederick A. Bressette Jr. of Baldwinsville and David Perrigo of Las Vegas; two sisters, Genevieve Prosser of Syracuse and Gloria Bressette of Lakeland, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Ethel C. Hemings Cook, 95, Cayuga Street, Homer, died Sunday at Cortland Memorial Nursing Facility. She was born in Pompey and graduated from Homer schools. She graduated in 1928 from Syracuse General Hospital as a registered nurse. She was a nurse at Cortland Memorial Hospital and a private duty nurse for many local families. She was a member of Homer Baptist Church for 45 years, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 222 and Rebekah Lodge 147 in Homer. Her husband, William E., died in 1988. Survivors: A daughter, Laura C.  Johnson of Homer; a sister, Laura Fetterly of Melbourne, Fla. Services: Private, at the convenience of the family. No calling hours. Donald L.
