Anna Groat Burley
CLYDE- Anna Groat Burley, 88, joined the body of saints on Sunday, January 8, 2006, after a brief illness. She fulfilled her life’s journey with peace, courage, and dignity. With professions of love and admiration still resounding in her heart, she departed to that holy place prepared for her. With her passing, she leaves a legacy of deep faith and committed service.
Anna’s relatives and many friends are invited to honor her memory by calling on her family Friday, January 13th, from 1-4 and 7-9 PM at the Baris Funeral Home, 87 W. Genesee St., Clyde. Her spiritual triumph will be crowned with the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday January 14th at 11AM in St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Clyde. Fr. James Hewes will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to St. John’s Church Memorial Fund, 114 Sodus St., Clyde, NY 14433 or to the Finger Lakes Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 1400 Winton Rd. North, Rochester, NY 14609
Anna, a lifelong resident of Clyde, was born November 24, 1917, the sixth child of nine, born to Thomas and Rose Fischette Buttaccio. She would often affectionately share her memories of life growing up on the Glover Road farm. Among her many stories were remembrances of picking vegetables in the fields, harmonizing with her sisters while washing dishes, listening to baseball games on the radio, and walking many miles to get to school. As a student at St. John’s School and then Clyde High School, Anna’s penchant for involvement and socializing was unmistakable. In 1942, she married Russell Groat of North Rose, who was then a member of the Armed Forces at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
As Anna’s life unfolded, it became a life of service. Even as a busy mother of five, she found time to volunteer as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. For at least twenty years she was a committee woman for the Democratic Party, working for the Board of Elections for several years. If she wasn’t knocking on neighbor’s doors collecting for the Cancer Society, the Red Cross, or the March of Dimes, she was chairperson for community projects. She could often be found working at bake sales, rummage sales, or voting booths. Anna served as one of the directors of the Galen Historical Society. In 1993, she was recognized for her service as the recipient of the Senior Citizen of the Year Award.
One of her greatest joys was helping others to learn, especially children. Her love of learning was shared through her involvement as a teacher’s aide, a volunteer remedial reading teacher, a library school teacher, as well as a literacy volunteer and religious education instructor. Anna held education in high regard and was passionate about assuring that others were given educational opportunities.
As a steadfast member of St. John the Evangelist parish for her entire life, Anna spent innumerable hours working for the benefit of her church community. Her sweet soprano voice was a part of the choir for many years. For her, it was an honor to praise God in this beautiful manner. Her involvement in the Catholic Daughters of America lasted for over 55 years and was ongoing at the time of her death. Her faith was her mainstay. She prayed fervently and ceaselessly, usually for others, always putting her trust in her Heavenly Father. Attending mass and receiving the Eucharist gave her joy and strength. She never went to bed without her rosary beads.
Anna was an extraordinary giver. She was tireless in her efforts to visit or send cards to the sick, prepare meals for grieving families, invite the alone to a holiday meal, lend a compassionate ear to those in need, and open her home to many. Her gift of compassionate caring was shared with the developmentally disabled for seven years while she was employed at the Newark Developmental Center.
Anna appreciated the simple things in life: visiting her husband Fred, gathering with family, visiting with friends, cooking for a crowd, writing chatty letters to friends and family, sharing her thoughts in editorials, shouting out answers while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, cheering for the New York Yankees, the Buffalo Bills and the Syracuse Orangemen, wearing color coordinated outfits, and filling her closets with countless coats, shoes and purses. She will be remembered as a true disciple, a dedicated mother, a devout Catholic, a loyal Democrat and a diehard Yankees fan. We salute Anna Groat Burley. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Anna will be missed by her loving husband of 20 years, Fred Burley of the Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus, her son, Steven (Kathy) Groat of Clyde, four daughters, Linda (David) Frank of Newark, Darlene (Jim) Fischette of Ft. Myers, FL, Pamela (Bob) Iocco of Newark and Mary Beth Tyler of Newark, her brother Raymond (Aggie) Buttaccio of Chambersburg, PA, sisters Flora Avoli of Orchard Park, Delia Colarocco of the Wayne County Nursing Home in Lyons, and Jane (John) Dapolito of Clyde; 14 grandchildren, Kim (Dan) Bellavia, Lisa (Steve) Buschner, Todd (Lisa) Jennings, Jonathan DeCook, Erin, Emily and Elliot Iocco, Jason, Evan, Jaymes, Ryan and Kyle Groat, Joshua and Seth Tyler; 10 great grandchildren. She also leaves her husband’s caring children, Darryl (Elaine Sweet) Burley, Rosemary (Paul) Nevelezer and Sue Gommer.
She will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the multitude of people who have been touched by her life.
Gone before to ready her way are parents, Rose and Thomas Buttaccio, first husband Russell Groat, brothers, Joe, Fred and Danny Buttaccio and her sister Eleanor DeLisio.
