FRANK O'ROURKE

Tappan, N.Y. - Frank O'Rourke of Tappan, NY, died October 9, 2004 at Nyack Hospital. He was born April 26, 1917 in Glencar, County Leitrim, Ireland. He is the second oldest of four children born to Bernard and Annie O'Rourke. Frank received his primary education at Diffreen National School. Frank's early years were spent working on the family farm in addition to working part-time for the Leitrim County Council for four shillings a day. Frank's pursuit of a better way of life first brought him to Dublin where he worked for a dairy farmer in Dundrum until he earned a few pounds to pay his fare to Liverpool. Frank was employed in different parts of Scotland and England. His jobs included a long shore man in the north of Scotland, putting up landing lights at Military Airports in Lincolnshire. While living in London World War II had started and in order to stay employed, Frank was required to register for the Armed Forces. He believed at that time his job exempted him from Military Service, but not so. About a year later, Frank received notice to report to Active Duty. Being an Irishman, Frank returned the envelope with the inscription "not know at this address". Eventually he was conscripted to serve. They sent him to join a regiment in the Yorkshire Hills that were getting ready for overseas duty. Frank spent ten days on a ship in Liverpool Harbor before setting out to North Africa as part of a convoy of thirty-five ships, as a member of Montgomery's eighth army. After Rommel was chased out of Africa, Frank was part of American, British and other troops that made up the fifth army that invaded Italy. While in Italy, Frank got injured when a German shell hit a truck he was riding in. While recuperating in the hospital in Naples, he was given a fast course as a nurse orderly and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. This turn of events meant he was no longer a combat soldier. Frank was assigned to casualty, collecting stations on the front live along the Adriatic coast of Italy. He ended up in Trieste which was a disputed territory between the Yugoslavians and the Italians. Following military duty and receiving an honorable discharge in 1946, Frank returned to London, but then shortly thereafter immigrated to Canada. In April 1949, he eventually found his way to New York City. Frank worked in the New York City Transit Authority from 1949 until his retirement in 1976. Frank married Regina Mellet in 1955 and took up residence in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. He then moved his family to Spring Valley, NY in 1962. Frank was the proud father of two boys and three girls. In 1966, Frank joined the Ancient Order of Hibernian's and in 1977 he became extremely active in the Rockland Irish American Cultural Center. He joined the Political Education Committee in 1978 and the Irish Arts Forum in 1981 where he did parts in several plays. He also joined the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1980 and accompanied the club on four memorable trips to Ireland. He was also Grand Marshall of the Pearl River St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1992. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Frank is survived by his wife Regina; daughters, Gloria, Theresa and Mary; his two sons, Patrick and Kevin; son-in-law, Sam and daughter-in-law Cheryl, also three grandchildren, Andrew, Tara and Emma.
